I purchased an original painting from an online Goodwill auction out of California. It is very similar to De Longpre's Basket of Beauties. It appears to be from the correct time period, and with his reputation for perfectionist I wonder if this is something he started and never finished for one reason or another. Who would you suggest to contact who knows De Longpre well enough to assess if this is actually one of his works?

My husband and I bought the property in 1964 but sold the area on the lower slope a few years later due to the difficulties of maintaining that part of the property. Two homes were built on the lower slope with access from California Terrace. We enjoyed that beautiful residence for many years.

A friend of mine has the brent photo album with a lot of old pictures, I mean a lot of pictures. Of the house inside and out. the bedrooms and the porch. Many pictures of the house at different angles. Of the he family on outings and hunting trips. It is really amazing.

My research was that Homer Laughlin showed his wares at the world fair, where he listened to English China representatives make fun of him saying his work was inferior and maybe someday he might be good. He challenged them to pick their best and his worst to be judged. He won the judging. He then had the mark with the English lion on its back with the eagle on top, signifying the eagle besting the lion. He was finally asked by the president to stop using the mark as it was causing international problems.

So basically this absolutely incredible home was "built" in 1900, then demolished only 20 years later? WHY???? According to the article the "house was the majority value of his $60,000 estate"—accounting for inflation in 2024 that's almost a MILLION dollar home. So they demolished an incredible million dollar home only 20 years after it was "built"? And in 1920, in Hollywood which was still barely developed and was still mostly farmland? A home that was literally a tourist attraction because it was so incredible and exquisitely built? Something doesn't add up here.

Given that Burdette used the same house photo in 1906 and 1910, and Braly did not move to the house at 201 S. Orange Grove until sometime after 1908, it seemed unlikely. A check of the Sanborn map (1910) for the house at 201 is not a match for the image shown above.
