This has been planned for a few days, with the plan for their child to be born on Thursday. Nothing to worry about here, Aoki will miss up to three games while he is away, and considering the schedule, I wouldn't expect to see Aoki back until Friday at the earliest, and probably not until Saturday.

To fill his roster spot, Josh Prince was also recalled from Triple-A Nashville. This will be Prince's second time with the team this season, as he spent a month with the team while Aramis Ramirez was injured. He only made six appearances with the team during that time, three times as a pinch runner and three times as a late defensive replacement. Caleb Gindl will probably get the next few starts while Aoki is out, with Josh Prince providing outfield depth in case of emergency.

With Tony Bosch and former Biogenesis employee Porter Fischer singing like canaries to Major League Baseball, it's only natural to question what information they might provide. This body of "evidence," along with interviews of the players themselves, will be what MLB will use when it decides whether to levy suspensions under the amorphous "just cause" provision of the Joint Drug Agreement. Apparently MLB had not gotten around to interviewing Ryan Braun or Alex Rodriguez yet, preferring to build their case before confronting the players with their findings. The case MLB presents the players will primarily consist of two forms of evidence: documentary and testimonial.

We have already seen some of the documentary evidence against the players, thanks to Fischer's disclosures to the Miami New Times. As to Braun, this evidence is, at best, inconclusive. Right now, the only hard evidence linking Braun to Bosch and Biogenesis are three handwritten notes with ambiguous references: his name on a list, or next to a monetary figure, or used as an adjective. No dates. No mention of a specific drug or a doping regime. In other words, nothing that could support a suspension. Unless Bosch, Fischer, or other players allegedly involved can produce something more than undated, handwritten notes-something conclusively linking Braun to a prohibited substance-the paper trail is pretty weak.

It's certainly possible, perhaps even probable, that there are more Biogenesis documents out there with Braun's name on them. The problem is that MLB is apparently handing informants wads of cash in unmarked envelopes to get at them. A few hundred grand isn't chump change, and provides a pretty powerful incentive for Bosch and Fischer-both of whom are believed to be broke-to give MLB what it wants, if not necessarily the truth. It can't be hard to fake the kind of ad-hoc handwritten records Bosch apparently kept, and this is where MLB's treatment of Braun as "Public Enemy No. 1" becomes especially problematic. MLB's decision to give Bosch, its primary witness, money, litigation relief, personal security, and a good word with federal investigators makes the whole thing seem a little bit ... well, gangster-ish. This isn't charity, after all; MLB believes Bosch has something to give them, and they're providing a powerful incentive for him to do precisely that.

All of this is why MLB's case really hinges on Bosch's testimony. Not only will Bosch have to authenticate his documents, but he'll have to convince a (hopefully neutral) arbitrator that he's telling the truth.

For Braun, this emphasis on Bosch's credibility may be a godsend. In late April, Bosch issued one of his only public statements to date about Biogenesis. Bosch essentially confirmed Braun's account: that his name appeared in the documents because Braun's attorneys, who previously knew Bosch, consulted him when attempting to overturn Braun's 2011 suspension. "I just answered a few questions from his legal team, not from Braun or any other ballplayer," Bosch told ESPN. Bosch otherwise denied any involvement in the doping scandal, as he had consistently done before turning MLB mole.

At the time, many people disregarded Bosch's statement entirely, and not without good reason. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Bosch continued to disclaim any knowledge of illegal doping. The "anti-aging" clinic Bosch ran in Florida was a "quasi-medical establishment which offered its most wealthy clients assistance in weight loss, physical fitness, and in some cases psychological services." It wasn't licensed or regulated by the State of Florida, and Bosch wasn't a physician, although, like many PED peddlers, he seemed to like to give his clients the impression that he was. Bosch apparently obtained prescriptions illegally from a real doctor, who, last I heard, was going to be interviewed by MLB. And to further ding Bosch's credibility, he tried (but failed) to extort money from Alex Rodriguez before turning to MLB.

But even if you didn't believe Bosch's corroboration mattered then, it pretty clearly matters now. With Bosch's credibility the key issue, if he now changes his story, it will cast considerable doubt on every assertion he makes about Braun. No other ballplayer is going to present this kind of problem for MLB.

Some things to read while looking for a better signal.

There have been some dark days this season, but yesterday might have been the darkest: The Brewers were blown out 10-1 by the Astros last night and we've got the recap, if you missed it.

Juan Francisco had three of the Brewers' eight hits last night, including an unlikely triple to center. Adam McCalvy says Francisco is "starting to show off that power" in his last three games.

For what it's worth, last night's rout was only the second time this season the Brewers have lost by nine runs or more. They were also beaten 10-1 by the Cardinals on May 5. If that number made you feel better, here's one that will make you feel worse: The Brewers, after 69 games, are only one win ahead of Houston.

Other notes from the field:

The Brewers are now 2-8 in interleague play in 2013.

When Tom Gorzelanny hit Carlos Pena with a pitch last night, it was the 800th plunking in Minute Maid Park history. Plunk Everyone has more on the accomplishment.

Mark Attanasio was in attendance for last night's game. He's in town for an MLB event.

The series continues in Houston tonight when Kyle Lohse takes on Erik Bedard at 7:10. Kevin Massoth has the MLB.com preview.

The Brewers will continue play tonight without Ryan Braun, who traveled to Phoenix on Tuesday to get a second opinion on his injured hand. That's almost certainly not good news.

Jean Segura had a hit last night, but has fallen back to second place in the NL with 90 on the season. Yadier Molina now leads all National Leaguers with 92. Segura is still making an impressive impression in his first full MLB season, though: Stephen Loftus of Beyond the Box Score listed him among baseball's most unexpected top performers and Bill Ripken of MLB Network compared him to Ravens running back Ray Rice.

Segura most likely won't be seriously discussed on the trade market this season, but several other Brewers may be. Dave Radcliffe of Yahoo has a list of five teams the organization could be looking to deal with.

It's possible we're going to see wholesale changes in the Brewer starting rotation in the next couple of weeks, but nothing appears to be immediate: The JS reports that Chris Narveson and Marco Estrada are both at least one rehab appearance away from rejoining the team, leaving Saturday's starting spot as "TBD."

Looking further ahead, first base is one of several question marks the Brewers are going to have to address this winter. Kristen Zenz of PocketDoppler.com makes the case for Corey Hart to come back for another year.

In the minors:

On the field, Brevard County kept their Florida State League playoff hopes alive with an 8-3 win over Lakeland. They remain half a game back of Dunedin with one game to play.

Hiram Burgos made a rehab appearance for Brevard County in that game and allowed two runs on five hits over four innings.

The Midwest League All Star Game was last night and Wisconsin pitcher Damien Magnifico pitched .2 scoreless innings for the Western Division team. Chris Mehring of Rattler Radio has much more from the event.

Wisconsin outfielder Tyrone Taylor wasn't an MWL All Star, but Wisconsin Sports Tap is still pretty excited about him and took a look at his prospect status.

Pitcher Johnny Hellweg has been one of the bright spots this season for Nashville, but he's been taking a break lately. He hasn't pitched since June 11 in an effort to keep his innings down, but Jeff Hem says he'll start on Saturday.

Our draft signings thread has been updated this morning to include notes on four additional players: @Mass_Haas notes that 15th round pick David Denson and 36th round pick Jesse Weiss have agreed to terms, and the Brewers' official announcement was also the first we had head about 21st round pick Tristan Archer and 34th round pick Dylan Brock.

One of the great things about baseball is that anything can happen on any given day. That's also one of the worst things about baseball, because tonight "anything" meant getting blown out by a team that's lost 100 games in each of the last two seasons and is likely to do it again in 2013.

Alfredo Figaro followed up the best start of his career with a poor outing tonight, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits over 4.1 innings, including a long home run. The Brewer bullpen allowed Houston to tack on five more runs. This was the fourth time the Astros have scored ten runs in a game this season, but only the second since April.

I wrote two different paragraphs about the Brewer defense tonight. Use the comments to decide which of these you'd prefer we use as narrative:

The lone bright spot in tonight's game was the Brewer defense, as Norichika Aoki made a great sliding catch in right and Carlos Gomez made a catch on Tal's Hill that should appear on every highlight show you'll see for the next several months.

The single thing that prevented tonight's game from getting even worse was the Brewer defense, as Norichika Aoki made a great sliding catch in right and Carlos Gomez made a catch on Tal's Hill that should appear on every highlight show you'll see for the next several months.

It will probably surprise no one to discover that Yuniesky Betancourt was not a part of any defensive gems tonight. He started at third base and committed a pair of errors while going 1-for-3. He's now played in all 41 Brewer losses this season, but the team is 4-0 when he does not appear.

The Brewers will get another chance to not be embarrassingly bad tomorrow, when Kyle Lohse takes on Erik Bedard at 7:10.
