Who Lives in the Most Beautiful Green House?

While pulling up dead garden weeds you might find a treasure! That is, if you think of a monarch caterpillar as a treasure like the first graders think! They were excited to observe our tiny caterpillar go through all the stages. We put sticks to climb on and fresh greens in the cage every day. Soon, the caterpillar made the letter "J" for us before entering the metamorphosis of change. The chrysalis is the most beautiful green house with little dots of gold on the side. When our monarch finally emerged the students were so delighted! The only problem with a late bloomer is when to release the butterfly? We chose a fairly mild day when our students were on break. We hope our butterfly made it to Mexico or at least somewhere warm, other than Nebraska!

Cardinals and Robins

Just the other day I heard a cardinal and a robin out in the Outdoor Learning Environment. They sounded so wonderful! I love listening to them.

I have been hearing cardinals more than I usually see them, but I usually see robins more often than I hear them.

Starlings have invaded the bird feeders out in the wildflower garden of the OLE. As many as 75 birds were seen feeding before our 3 inch snow forecast for tomorrow. We hope to see other birds this winter too.

Waking up on Saturday morning was a frosty treat to see! The trees were coated with a light dusting of snow backlit by the sun. This is a maple tree on the school grounds looking up to the sky. It seems these unseasonably mild temperatures in January might not produce many typical winter days this year so it really makes you appreciate any beauty of winter.

Who's Hiding in the Plants?

As well as keeping the outside environment looking nice, we have to keep the inside plants healthy too. I have the responsibility to train other kids in Willowdale to water the plants in the front of the school. I get to train people in all grades. I teach them how long to water the different plants, which plants to water, and when to water them. This is a picture of me watering the plants after school.

Snow! Snow! Snow Showers! Last Monday was our first snow in Nebraska! You are looking west at the rock outcropping area of the OLE. Two of the grasses pictured are miscanthus and maiden hair. A fresh blanket of snow adds dimension and beauty to the grasses in the winter.

Did you know that Mr. Vincent took this picture from the roof? Well, he did! He captured a glimpse of our gorgeous fall with the mums in full bloom outlining our OLE classroom! Some of our first graders were involved in a Willowdale Outdoor Learning Environment movie. They read from a script to tell about the many features of each garden. Mr. Vincent's production will be viewed by visitors who come to visit Willowdale!

Yesterday, there was a beautiful but odd sight overhead in the OLE. There were Canadian Geese! They weren't in the normal "V" that you usually see them in. The ten geese were in a straight line! It was outstanding. Everyone was so surprised that we said "whoa!"

Welcome to Willowdale's Outdoor Learning Environment web blog! Students will have the opportunity to update reports about the OLE using this blog. Check us out even in the winter for reports about the birds, wildlife, and even pictures after the snow falls! Twenty-five Environmental Club students of all ages just finished working to prepare the OLE for the fall.
You are looking at the arid area with purple cone flowers, Sedum on the left, and Snow in the Summer on the right. Who will write the next report?
