Also ganz ehrlich, ich hab gewusst, dass Law School viel arbeit sein wird, aber das was es hier spielt ist schon eine ganz andere Liga. Ich steh um 7 auf und geh um 11 schlafen und dazwischen arbeite ich nur. Es ist fast alles total interessant, also ist es nicht so schlimm, aber trotzdem... Die Leute hier sind wirklich sehr nett und der Unterricht ist so gestaltet, dass man immer voll dabei sein muss, also fad wird einem wirklich nicht. Aber vom Arbeitspensum her duerfte hier jede Woche so wie eine stressige Woche auf der FH werden. Ich frag mich schon wie das in der Exam Period sein wird... Auf jeden Fall geht's mir ganz gut hier, auch wenn ich nicht wirklich Zeit zum Denken hab. Liebe Gruesse aus Ithaca, Oliver

So, jetzt kommt auch schon mein erster Bericht über Ithaca und Cornell. Also nachdem ich einen relativ ereignisreichen Tag hinter mich gebracht habe bin ich dann nach einiger Zeit am Donnerstag in Ithaca angekommen. Seither hatte ich kaum Zeit zum Atmen! Am Freitag bin ich gleich einmal einkaufen gegangen und habe es geschafft einen ganzen Minivan mit Sachen wie Mikrowelle, Toaster, Töpfen, etc. zu füllen. Nach 2 Tagen auspacken, aufräumen, und fortgehen bin ich ziemlich erledigt. Bisher habe ich ca. ein Drittel meiner Klasse kennengelernt und es sind alle bisher wahnsinnig nett. Natürlich sind einige dabei, die nicht so ganz mein Fall sind, aber auch die sind grundsätzlich absolut in Ordnung. Bisher habe ich mich mit sehr vielen Leuten köstlich unterhalten und man merkt sofort, dass das Bildungsniveau hier weit höher ist als sonstwo: Ich wurde kein einziges Mal nach Kanguruhs gefragt!! Der Campus selbst ist wunder schön und mir gefällt auch die Stadt total gut. Angeblich soll es pro Kopf nur in New York City mehr Restaurants geben als hier. Das kann ich mir sehr gut vorstellen. Alles in allem ist es wunderbar hier. Einziges Problem: The Hill. Ithaca ist nämlich sehr hügelig. Man kann sich das so vorstellen: Cornell University ist auf der Spitze des Schlossbergs in Graz, Graz ist Downtown Ithaca und ich wohne auf halber Höhe. Ich wohne zwar nur 10 Minuten vom Campus entfernt, aber das sind 10 Höllenminuten wenn man nur bergauf gehen muss und das bei 30 Grad! Aber es gibt einen Shuttlebus direkt von meinem Apartment zur Law School. So, ich werd mich langsam mal hinlegen und schlafen gehen... Well, I have finally come around to updating this blog and to adding the pictures from my roundtrip of Mexico. Boy I loved the south of Mexico - it is such a beautiful country. Don't believe me - just look at the pictures in the Gallery section of this website. I just loved it. Now I am here in New York City, or the Big Apple, as some call it. It is a strong contrast to Mexico and while I had to learn to walk slower in Mexico, now I have to learn to walk faster again in this metropolis. In general I really like it here and I can't complain, but I miss all of my friends from everywhere in the world. The experience is definitely worth it though and I am looking forward to seeing all of you again very soon. For those of you in Austria I can only hope that we will get a chance to get together when I get back, which should be in early September. But for now, enjoy the new pictures in the gallery and I'd love to get mail from you. Have a good week!

San Antonio - neue Bilder

Wow, San Antonio ist eine der schönsten Städte in den USA die ich bisher kennengelernt habe. Das Stadtzentrum besteht aus dem Alamo, eines der wichtigsten Forts der Geschichte der USA und aus einem kleinen Kanal der sich Riverwalk nennt und im Prinzip durch die ganze Innenstadt fließt. Am Ufer des Riverwalks befinden sich zahlreiche Cafés und Restaurants, aber auch so ziemlich alle Hotels von Wyndham bis Hilton finden sich hier. Und am Abend kann man gut Essengehen und dann am Balkon des Hard Rock Cafés die vorbeifahrenden Boote beobachten, die extra für Halloween geschnückt sind. Ein Traum. Bilder von diesem Ausflug sind schon in der Gallery zu finden. Lg,

Nationalfeiertag

So, jetzt aber einmal eine gesunde Dosis Patriotismus! Immerhin ist unser Nationalfeiertag heute
und das gehört gefeiert. Ich werde diesen Tag mit einem guten Abendessen feiern zu dem ich so ziemlich alle meine nicht österreichischen Freunde hier eingeladen habe. Die sollen mal sehen, was die österreichische Küche zu bieten hat (ich hoffe nur, dass ich sie nicht mit meinen Kochkünsten verjage - aber Palatschinken und Geschnetzeltes sollte ich grad noch hinbekommen...). Heute ist jedenfalls wieder ein wahnsinnig heißer Tag und selbst im Schatten brennen einem die Augen und das Gesicht tut weh. Laut Termometer hat es gerade wieder einmal 35° (16:00). Aber das kann sich hier schnell ändern - gestern hatten wir noch 22° als Höchsttemperatur. Naja, aber zumindest hat es aufgehört zu Regnen, man kann die Berge wieder sehen (manchmal fühle ich mich hier wie in Schladming - überall sind Felswände und Berge zu sehen).

So, jetzt widme ich mich wieder meinen 400 wöchentlichen Spanischseiten, die ich für meine Kurse lesen muss.

P.S.: an Petra und Trixi: Keine Sorge, ihr seit nicht die einzigen die ein Zimmer haben wo die Steckdosen etwas merkwürdig platziert sind...

Reisefieber

Und wieder ist mehr als ein Monat vorbei seit ich das letzte Mal gepostet habe. Und es ist unglaublich viel passier seit dem. Wie ihr sehen könnt, war ich sehr fleißig, was das Erstellen einer neuen Website angeht. Irgendwie bin ich froh, dass ich das jetzt endlich gemacht habe, damit wird es so viel einfacher alle Bilder on-line zu stellen und ich muss nicht immer auswählen welche Bilder ich hier im Blog veröffentliche. Das bedeutet, dass ich ab jetzt keine Bilder mehr hier im Blog veröffentlichen werde, sondern alle Bilder in die Online Gallery stellen werde. Übrigens, alle wichtigen Bilder sind schon on-line, sogar die von Madeira!

Aber zum wichtigeren Thema: Was ist in letzter Zeit hier geschehen? Unglaublich viel!!! Guadaljara war ein Traum - ihr könnt die Bilder in meiner Gallery bewundern. Die Stadt hat so viel Charme und man kann fühlt sich einfach irrsinnig wohl dort. Das Klima trägt viel dazu bei - in Guadalajara hat es im Sommer meistens nur 25° - verglichen mit den 40° in Monterrey ein Traum. Der Unabhängigkeitstag und die dazugehörigen Feierlichkeiten (genannt - "El Grito" - Der Schrei ... lange Geschichte) sind ein Wahnsinn und ich hab es dort so richtig genossen. Leider waren wir nur 3 Tage dort, schade eigentlich....

Danach hab ich öfters was mit Anja, einer ehemaligen FHJ Studentin die in Monterrey geschäftlich zu tun hatte, und mit Johannes, einem Montanstudenten aus Leoben der hier ein Praktikum absolviert, unternommen. Mit Johannes zum Beispiel war ich in McAllen, Texas, was recht interessant war, aber wahrscheinlich nicht die 5 Stunden Busfahrt wert war. In letzter Zeit hab ich hauptsächlich mit Sona aus Tschechien und Victor aus Tabasco, Mexiko, kleine Ausflüge unternommen, so zum Beispiel nach Saltillo in Coahuila (der Nachbarstaat von Nuevo León). Auch von dieser Reise gibt es Bilder in der Gallery.

Aber mein Reisewahn ist erst jetzt so richtig ausgebrochen und die nächsten 3 Wochen bin ich mehr unterwegs als in Monterrey, obwohl ich noch unterricht habe. Am Freitag fahren wir (Sona, sprich Sonja, James, aus Australien und ich) nach San Antonio, Texas um uns den Alamo anzuschauen (wichtiges Schlachtfeld wo Mexiko gegen die Texaner gewann) und ein bisschen einzukaufen. Es scheint fast unmöglich, aber Qualitätsware ist in Mexiko teurer als in den USA und wirklich nur den Reichen vorbehalten. Das Essen, Schuhe, und Taxifahrten sind zwar billiger als bei uns, aber sonst ist fast alles teurer.

Zurück zu meinem Reisewahn - nach San Antonio, folgt Zacatecas, wo wir (wieder die selbe Gruppe plus vielleicht Anneli, einer Schwedin) den Dia de Muertos (Allerseeln - ein riesen Fest in Mexiko) verbringen werden. Die Woche darauf fahren wir nach Guanajuato, einem wichtigen Ort für die Unabhängigkeit Mexikos und eine der schönsten Städte Mexikos, sagt man.

Auf jeden Fall müsst ihr in den nächsten Wochen immer wieder mal auf meiner Homepage vorbeischauen und die neuen Bilder betrachten. Es lohnt sich garantiert...

Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Senora de Monterrey...

Okay, das hier ist die Kathedrale von Monterrey. Eigentlich heißt Monterrey ja nicht Monterrey sondern der volle Name, wie im Spanischen üblich, ist furchtbar lang: Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Senora de Monterrey. Wie gesagt - sehr lang. Aber heute sagt jeder nur noch Monterrey. Die Kirche ist an und für sich sehr schön von außen und innen ist sie relativ schlicht - mit ziemlich kitschigen Gemälden und einer Reliquie vom Gründer von Opus Dei. (Kleine Anmerkung wiedereinmal: Monterrey gilt als so ziemlich die Konservativst-Katholische Stadt Mexikos). Mir gefällt es hier aber sehr gut im Ganzen, aber ich freu mich schon auf unseren Ausflug nach Guadalajara (2. größte Stadt Mexikos) am Unabhängigkeitstag. Wird sicher lustig.

Chihuahuawüste und Cuatro Ciénegas

Cuatro Ciénegas ist inmitten der Chihuahuawüste und besteht aus einzelnen Pools in denen man baden gehen kann. Es ist wirklich sehr schön hier und das Wasser hat 32°!!! Und es ist unglaublich klar! Wie man an dem unteren Bild sehen kann.

Cuatro Ciénegas is in the middle of the Chihuahua desert and consists of a lot of little pools. You can go swimming in most of them and the water is really warm - it's around 80°F and just fantastic after a long day of travelling...

Ich hab am Anfang vielen Leuten erzählt, dass Monterrey in der Wüste liegt. Wie man sieht hab ich mich geirrt. Diese Bild ist vom Naturpark "Cola del Caballo". So viel man mir erklärt hat bedeutet das was ähnliches wie Mähne des Pferdes. Der Name kommt von den Wasserfällen die man hier findet. Es ist unglaublich wie schön es in diesem Park ist.
Das hier ist einer dieser Wasserfälle die dem Park seinen Namen geben. Die Gruppe die mich hier hin mitgenommen hat ist dann auch noch wandern gegangen, was total lustig war, aber leider hat es dann angefangen zu regnen und wir sind total durchnässt angekommen. Im nächsten Bild sieht man ganz gut wie durchnässt wir alle waren. Dummerweise ist in meinem Auto die Klimaanlage voll aufgedreht gewesen und ich bin halb erfroren. In Verbindung mit meinen Nassen Klamotten hab ich mich dann ziemlich verkühlt. Aber der Ausflug war auf jeden Fall ein Erfolg und ich hab die Natur hier sehr genossen. Es ist ein ziemlicher Unterschied zur Chihuahuawüste auf der anderen Seite der Stadt.

Monterrey Stadt

Etwas, das einem in Mexiko sofort auffällt ist, dass hier alles bebaut wird. Es ist unglaublich wie manch Leute ihre Häuser in die Berge hineinbauen. Jedenfalls ist Monterrey auch als Ciudad de las Montanas bekannt, was so viel wie Stadt der Berge bedeutet. Ganz Monterrey ist von diesen Bergen quasi eingeschlossen. Es ist eine total schöne Landschaft hier und viele Leute gehen hier übers WE wandern oder in einen Naturpark zum Entspannen.
Das ist eine der wichtigsten Einkaufsstraßen Monterreys. Ich vergiss aber trotzdem dauernd den Namen (sofern ich ihn jemals gekannt habe). Es gibt hier wirklich fast alles zu kaufen und zu Essen und man fühlt sich fast wie in einer amerikanischen Metropole.
Hier sieht man wieder meinen Freundeskreis beim Essen in einem Pub in Monterrey. Ganz links ist Christin (Tennessee), Matt (Colorado), Kathleen (Chicago), James (Melbourne), Ich, und Ashley (Dallas, Texas - ist aber in Eindhoven, Holland aufgewachsen bis sie 10 war).

Campus inklusive Pfau

Also, jetzt einmal eine kleine Tour des Campus Monterrey del Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, wie der Campus der Uni hier so schön heißt. Als erstes kommt natürlich das wichtigste Gebäude des Campus an die Reihe - nein es ist nicht die Cafeteria und auch nich die Disko - es ist "la Rectoría" was so viel wie das Rektorat bedeutet. Hier sind die Büros der ganz, ganz wichtigen Personen und ein paar Veranstalltungsräume für besondere Anlässe drin. Und was man auf keinen Fall vergessen darf - die Mexikanische Flagge weht direkt vor dem Gebäude und wird jeden Tag behutsam gehisst.
Hier sieht man das sogenannte CETEC Gebäude (keine Ahnung wofür das steht). Es ist so viel wie das Technologiezentrum des Campus und einige sehr gut ausgestattete Computersäle befinden sich hier. Außerdem muss man hier seinen Laptop registrieren lassen wenn man WLAN am Campus benutzen will.
Das hier ist nur ein kleiner Ausschnitt der Gartenanlage des Campus. Dieser Teich befindet sich zwischen dem CETEC und der Bibliothek und ich muss jeden Tag hier vorbei auf dem Weg zu einer meiner Vorlesungen. Wir schließen schon Wetten ab, wer als erster im Wasser landet, da es sehr leich ist, den Zwischenraum zwischen den 2 Brücken zu übersehen. Irgendwann landet sicher jemand im Wasser - wahrscheinlich werd das eh ich sein.
Und zum Schluss noch die Auflösung was den Pfau betrifft. Einer unserer Maestros (Professoren) hat unseren Campus einen Zoo genannt. Und damit hat er recht. Wir haben unzählbare Vogelarten (mit Schildern die genau beschreiben um welche Vögel es sich handelt) am Campus und zwischendurch kann es einem auch passieren, dass man einem Hirsch (!!!) aus dem weg gehen muss wenn man zur nächsten Vorleseung geht. Am Anfang haben alle die Leute für verrückt erklärt die gesagt haben, dass es einen Hirsch am Campus gibt, aber was soll ich sagen, es gibt wirklich einen!

Live aus der Chihuahua Wüste

Wie man vielleicht sieht, haben wir recht viel Spaß in der Chihuahuawüste gehabt. Der Sand ist dort noch weißer als man auf den Bildern sieht. Es ist dort angenehm warm, aber kühler als in Monterrey und wie man sieht, kann man dort ziemlich gute Fotos machen.
Ein paar Kilometer weiter kommt man dann schon wieder zu den Pools in denen man schwimmen kann. Dieser Pool war zwar geschützt, aber die anderen Pools sind um nichts schlechter. Auf dem Bild seht ihr wieder meine Cliq hier in Mexico: Christin, mich, James, Matt, und Kathleen.

Halftime

Well, what can I say - it really went by fast. I am half way through college!!! And now the best year of my college life is about to start. I will spend 6 months in Monterrey, Mexico, attending the Tec de Monterrey and studying International Relations - everything I wanted I got - and then I will work for Austrian in New York until May. So right now I am really busy getting everything done before I leave for Mexico next Friday and I have to get this blog in order and put some pictures up from my vacation in Madeira, Malta, Vienna with Beth and Suzie, etc. I think I will open up a new website with a nice gallery, otherwise this blog will be too crowded. Anyways, I hope everyone will enjoy his or her summer and I'll try to tell you guys all about the things that happen in Mexico.

Vacation Time

Well, finally everything is over, the exams I mean. It really seems to be true that every semester you spend at the university gets intenser and more stressful but this could also just be the case because I have started working for the university as a research assitant. We are currently preparing a conference about learning styles in Europe and India and I get to "sort the mail" and send invitations and keep track of all papers submitted. As the organizing team is not really that structured it sometimes gets a bit confusing and I have my problems with that. But hey, I get paid, it's a good job, and most of the time it's fun and interesting.

Now, so far I have not really done a lot of things. Which is probably the best thing to do when you want to get the most out of your semester break. The most exciting (good) thing that happened was the birthday party of one of my friends, Andrea, last weekend. It was really a lot of fun and we didn't get home until 6am. I was dead the next day but it was worth it. The other exciting thing that happened so far was visiting the dentist. I got my wisdom teeth pulled out! At least two of them, the other two are to follow in two weeks - I can hardly wait. The whole week I've walked around with a big cheek looking like a deformed hamster trying to hide something in his cheek.

Well, so much for now. I'll be visiting Salzburg again in a week to go skiing. I am really looking forward to it as it's been almost a year since I last went skiing and I won't be able to go skiing after that for quite some time.

Vacation is over

Now I'm back in school again. How I hate this sentence. I have an accounting exam on Wednesday and didn't really do a lot for it so far. I only have tomorrow left to study the theory and improve my practical skills. Do you know the feeling when you don't want to do anything at all? When you're bored with everything you do and you think life is bad, even though everything is going really well? I think I am in such a phase right now, because everything I do is getting on my nerves and I don't get the things done I have to do because I am not interested in doing them. I don't know if it makes sense. The worst part about it is that I don't really know why I am feeling so bad because I have no reason to. In German we would say "es ist zum aus der Haut fahren" i.e. it makes me want to get out of my skin. The perfect idiom for this situation as I would really like to get out of my skin right now. Well, I think that is enough grumpyness for today.

I met some of my friends again today in college and it was actually quite fun studying for the accounting exam. I think I wouldn't mind studying if I didn't have to write exams and know everything by heart. It is a paradoxon so I guess I can only dream on... But studying together with other people makes it more fun. Especially on a beautiful day like this. In case you're wondering why this is so consfusing - it's 10 pm and I am so incredibly tired that not much more than nonsens crosses my mind.

Anyways, I just watched 'Madagascar' with my Flat-Mate Daniela and my friend Stephanie - for the first time in English - and it was a lot of fun. I really like that movie, although nothing beats Shrek 1 and 2.

I've got the Job!!!!!!

First of all - Happy New Year to all of you! While this year seems to start out a lot worse for a lot of people (Bad Reichenhall, West Virginia, Israel, Iraq) it is hard to imagine that my family will have a worse year than 2005. It would only be fair to have a bit more luck this year and as it seems it has already started.

New Year's Eve and the following 4 days in Munich were great. Munich is a wonderful city, although I have to say that I prefer living and studying in Austria. I have the feeling that Vienna, for example, has a lot more to offer than Munich (except for Beer maybe) and the old buildings in Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, etc. are much more impressive than in Munich. Additionally you don't have to go to Munich to go shopping: Things are a lot more expensive in Munich than in Austria and you get the same goods in Graz for less - I actually saw a digital camera that was 100% more expensive than in Graz! Anyways, I really enjoyed the days in Munich with my family but the absolute highlight was Neuschwanstein Castle (they translated it with New Swan Stone Castle). It really is a beatuiful fairy tale castle.

Anyways, back to the title of this post: I have got the Job at Austrian in New York City!!!! I will be working for Austrian Airlines in the Marketing and Sales Department in the Big Apple from January 2007 till April 2007. I was really hoping that I would get this job and I cannot tell you how happy I am that everything worked out. Today, I got the confirmation and now I have one thing less to worry about. Okay - that's all I wanted to tell you guys. I have to start working on my university stuff again... yuck! But hey, I get paid for reading and replying to emails... but unfortunately not for studying tax law, constitutional business law, and accounting, which will take up the better part of the remaining holidays... But then I am looking forward to it - studying makes time go by fast (sometimes too fast) and that means the semester holidays will be starting in a flash.

Okay coming back to what I actually wanted to say: Christmas was great and we had a wonderful evening. It went better than I thought it would. It was the first Christmas for both of my parents with their parents gone and I think we managed it pretty well. We celebrated on Christmas Eve (as is custom in Austria, for those who do not know it), and on Christmas Day we had a really nice family day togehter. That's about all I can tell you for now, I'll try to write more later and maybe I'll be able to post once every two days...

It's been quite a while since I wrote something on this blog - I really lack self-discipline it seems. But, thank God, classes are over for the next two weeks and I don't have to worry about meeting deadlines and not having enough time to study for exams. As I have told perhaps some of you we didn't have white Christmas here in Austria, but last night it started snowing and I think since this morning we could officially compete with the winter scenes from Narnia. By the way, you absolutely have to watch this movie! It is great and I really like how they made the movie. But still, people, especially critics from the newspapers, considered the movie to be rather poor - but I haven't met anyone who didn't like the movie so far. The sad truth is, that some people think that NARNIA is too Christian and that the symbols in the movie are too clearly Christian... this attitude is so typical of Austria nowadays, it's really sad. Had the same movie been made with another religion's symbology, let's say Hinduism or Buddhism, everybody would praise this movie in the highest.

Okay, I haven't really had a lot of time to post new things to this blog. But I haven't had a decent weekend in the last 3 weeks and I am so close to feeling burned out. I already had two exams this week and one presentation and it's only thursday morning!! One of the exams was an oral exam and it was dreadful! The professor asked me questions I couldn't have known because the answers were not in his notes - so how in the world does he expect anyone to know what he wants to hear!!!??? Anyways, I got a C (in Austria: 3) on this exam, although I already expected a D (4). It was weird, because a lot of people who usually get As or Bs, got worse grades and vice versa. It depended a lot on luck, I would say. Anyways, I only have two more exams and one EU-Law presentation to go and then it's Christmas!!!! I still don't know when I am going to go shopping for gifts though... Oh, well, they joy of being in college. You have 50 hour weeks so that when you enter the business world and have to work for 90 hours you don't get shocked. Well, sorry for the complaints in this post, but sometimes I'm really fed up with college. Just like Kathleen said in the comment to the last post: It's Christmas soon!!! By the way, I would like to go to Florida too. But I'll be going to Munich for a few days so I guess I won't be stuck at home. It won't be as hot but I just love European cities so it is okay.

By the way! I most likely will work in NYC the first half of 2007. I have a job offer, and the only thing missing is the interview, but the way it sounds I think I will get the job. Yay! And I will be able to go to Monterrey, Mexico for sure. That is only 6 months away!!! Okay, I gotta go.

Here I am sitting in my finance class ON A SATURDAY and it is the first time I have time to actually post something on this blog again... Isn't it sad? So many things happened in the past two weeks that I don't know where to start. I finally turned 20 and had a party at my apartment with exactly 2o guests (what a coincidence ;) ) and it was just wonderful. I have to post some pictures here so you can see all of my friends from Graz. I also went twice to Vienna in the past two weeks and now it has finally started to snow. Actually everything is completely covered in snow in downtown so I can only imagine how much snow my parents have at home. The rest of my life is basically taken up right now by 2 take home exams, 2 projects, and 2 presentations. I can't wait till Christmas is finally here. Well, break is over. I'll write more later.
