I'm a big fan of last.fm. They had a flashy, incredibly slow website years before most of the others even knew how to spell asynchronous.

Tangentially related, I've got time to read the last.fm blog because I'm in a food coma. Some vendors at work just stuffed my colleagues and I with free chick-fil-a.

Somehow, chicken is better when it's christian.

Some skinnier white people in Atlanta are getting a lot of buzz for making what looks like a pretty sweet sci-fi horror/dystopia called The Signal. And yeah, that URL is doyouhavethecrazy.com. It's a sort of 4rooms-ish 3-movies-in-one set in Terminus, a "conformist" city in the future that strangely resembles the intersection of freedom parkway and interstates 85/75.

There's also an interview with the 3 directors on io9. Dylan's "I Believe in You" is my fav.

I'm really into io9, but only because William Gibson is. Actually I'm not even really into Gibson. Somewhat related: my girlfriend just got a job doing research for a biomaterials company that develops new materials for implants and prosthetics. Too bad women are the inferior cyber-sex, everyone knows they suck at Team Fortress II.

Team Fortress II is a fucking waste of time and the bane of my existence right now. Not coincidentially, my girlfriend bought it for me! Sabotage? Maybe they're not so inferior after all, if somewhat too calculating. I'm quitting as soon as possible.

If anyone wants to play Team Fortress II with me, my steam name is Hembrizzay.

Stankonia is the best Outkast album.

The democrats will lose this election if they don't nominate someone with white skin and a southern accent. The evangelicals are crazy but prudent. Average Joe wants a bass player and a tone of voice that makes every sentence sound like an apology. Forget it that Obama is spot on with like, every technology-related political issue there is. And he doesn't hate gay people.

Jesus is so cool!

I spent Christmas in South Florida (where I grew up, as it happens). It's a place where people understand and even enjoy the merits of exercise and nutrition. Georgia, leave Jesus alone, skip the beer and stick to gin & tonic.

In a survey of 310 americans, it was found that omelettes with lots of tabasco are the best hangover food.

Invte-Only

Among all the providers peeved at Apple, NBC seems to be adapting the best. Their Hulu lets you watch NBC shows for free, streaming, but with commercials. You can't download them, but I never got the "watch a movie/t.v. show on your iPod" thing anyway. Or music videos, for that matter -- maybe the demand was for the chance to catch a glimpse of Lily Allen's third nipple, which would end up being like, a pixel on an iPod nano anyway, and she's really not that cute after all? But I digress. Third nipple or no, Hulu is invite only, so you'll have to wait your turn.

Another new service I've run across is Grand Central. Of course all the members are positively dripping with satisfaction at being a member of another exclusive beta test. Grand Central lets you consolidate your phone numbers under one, so you can ring whichever phone(s) you want depending on the time of day. You also get free visual voicemail and other VOIPy features. Ring ring the bells for the telephone companies... VOIP is finally coming on in a big way. Even Skype is probably scared, because Grand Central just got acquired by Google. Add in Google Chat, maybe an Android phone, and you've got a super cheap telescreenname promailnumber.

Blow Up Your T.V.

This is what happens when you force millions of housewives to sit in their living room all day and let them pick their TV shows. Basically, a woman on The View doesn't understand the concept of B.C. and insists that Jesus pre-dated the ancient Greeks.

I can't decide if she's actually catering to some subset of women (the illiterate, for instance), or just trying to be endearing. As in, "Oh that crazy Sherri, she's just being true to what's real to her." Meanwhile, I'm pretty much set on dating early 20-somethings for the rest of my life.

Unfortunately, this woman is past that threshold, though still totally adorable. In honor of the fatalism, here's some other places that link to or provide patterns of electrons that violate current intellectual property laws:

Karagarga - This is a tracker I've joined recently that basically kicks ass. KG specializes in "off-beat" movies and doesn't allow mainstream "Holly/Bollywood." They go on at length about this in their manifesto: "We draw the line with the advent of the big-budget Hollywood blockbuster (with movies like Jaws and Star Wars) which brought on a rapid deterioration in the quality of movies. Modern independent productions are allowed and we might make special exceptions for new Hollywood movies from special directors."

Indietorrents - This one's been around longer than oink, I believe. Karagarga is sort of the movie-equivalent to this one, as IT only allows non-RIAA music on the site. It even comes with a whole toolkit (for instance) of web apps so you can check which albums are tainted by Major Label Syphilis.

Waffles.fm - HILARIOUS. OMG.

btjunkie - You can find pretty much anything at btjunkie if it's remotely popular, so it's good for those rare occasions when you can't find the new Killers album on oink and the Bourne Fourquel isn't on karagarga, and maybe the latest episode of House MD just hasn't made it's way to usenet yet. Btjunkie tends to have more seeders than pirate bay or whatever else.

Usenet - Comcast probably blocks it. There's no cute mascot or web 2.0 interface, so who gives a shit, right?

Soulseek - No RSS feed here either. I'm partial to solarseek but to each their own. This is an IRC-based p2p network. I'm not sure that it's based on DCC, but if it is, the principle far pre-dates bittorrent or napster, or MP3s for that matter. You can definitely find the new Killers album here. Actually, I think it's amazing it's lasted this long.

So hopefully I'm googled enough to summon the wrath of the RIAA/IFP. Hopefully part of this blog post is copyrighted. Then I'll finally have an opportunity to pay outrageous settlement fees like the DRM champion that I am.

Hump Day

It's too bad about oink. It's to the point where many blogs have, at most, three or four actual sentences on their front page.

These are truly exciting times! As we build a cybertopia where words are moot, thought obsolete, it's only a matter of time before nouns are entirely phased out of the english language. What is it about the French that allows them such disproportionate real estate in the web 2.0 neighborhood? Is it their love of language? Their love of style? Perhaps the French culture trains the French People to be better wordsmiths, and thus better brandsmiths. Zimbra. Voxmobili.

Or perhaps it's the other way around. The descendants of the Gauls have prepared themselves well for the Internet Age. It's as if they've composed, on purpose, a society that's steering the course of the web. Web Trois, perhaps. Until then, I recommend we all at least get used to the accent. I for one welcome our new French overlords.
<img width='1' height='1'
