Chant Meditation with the mantra of OM

The vibration produced by chanting Om in the physical universe corresponds to the original vibration that first arose at the time of creation. The sound of Om sustains life. Om also represents the four states of the Supreme Being. The three sounds in Om (AUM) represent the waking, dream and deep sleep states and the silence which surrounds Om represents the "Bliss" state.

Because the first of the three states of consciousness is the waking state, it is represented by the sound "A" pronounced like "A" in America. Because the dream state of consciousness lies between the waking and the deep sleep states, it is represented by the letter "U" which lies between the "A" and "M". This "U" is pronounced like the "U" in would. The last state of consciousness is the deep sleep state and is represented by "M" pronounced as in "sum." This closes the pronunciation of Om just as deep sleep is the final stage of the mind at rest. Whenever Om(Om meditation) is recited in succession there is an inevitable period of silence between two successive Oms. This silence represents the "fourth state" which is the state of perfect bliss when the individual self recognizes his identity with the supreme.

In form, Lord Shiva is the epitome of perfection, beauty, grandeur, wisdom. He is master, creator. In his formlessness, He is the cosmic, macrocosmic existence. A perfect lover, teacher, innovator, redeemer, brimming with compassion for all sentient beings and perpetually in samadhi. He is the first master who gave methodological formulations for inner world. His instructions in ‘Shiva Bhairava Tantra’ lists 112 methods of meditation. Truth is beyond senses and the mind; thus we cannot use these mediums to understand what Truth is. Virtue, evil, birth and death – dualities exist in the mind and True self is beyond. Attachment, greed, lust, ego are bondages of mind, not of the self, and the self is purest of pure. Self is like the sky, vast, beyond horizon, without boundaries. Knowing this fundamental reality redeems us from all pain, all anguish, all anxieties. Realization of this knowledge brings us to the stage where each and everything seems null and void – what remains is pure emptiness. This world seems to be a dance of illusionary images – just like a dream where everything is real but the moment sleep is broken, all is gone. ‘Shivoham’ is the starting point, not the end – from here, one begins to know that you and I are both illusions and changeable but truth is neither me nor you. ‘Om Namah Shivay’ mesmerizes – just sway with it and experience the joy. ‘Shivoham’ is a melodious sortie of bliss. Our whole being functions because of the subtle life force called prana. Prana flows in our system through subtle energy channels (nadis) and energy centres (chakras). There are thousands of nadis and many chakras in us. Tremendous amount of energy lies in each human being. This latent energy stored at the base of the spine is known as Kundalini. The amount of energy that flows upward from this energy centre depends on the condition of other chakras and nadis. Hari Om meditation helps us in activating these chakras.

'Hari' means ‘the remover’. When one remembers His name and then repeats it, sins, karmas and bad astrological effects are steadily erased. Pain and suffering are removed. ‘Om’ is the primordial cosmic vibration from which sprang the entire cosmos and all creation. The most famous mantra is ‘Hari Om’. It’s essential meaning is that Hari is Om. ‘Hari Om’ is a universal mantra that removes suffering. This mantra contains within itself the cosmic vibration. Through Hari Om meditation, prana moves from one energy centre to the other.

There are seven main energy centres or ‘chakras’ along the spine. The prana travels through the body upwards through the chakras. Each chakra has positive as well as negative energy. For example, Mooladhara chakra, the energy centre at base of our spine manifests as inertia and enthusiasm.
