Engineering company South Auckland Forging Engineering (SAFE), is the owner of New Zealand’s largest solar power plant to date, with the opening of the new facility in the town of Drury.

The solar farm has been developed by Ramarama company. In total, the 68-KW solar farm is expected to meet 70 per cent of the company’s power needs, as well as the electricity needs of 12 houses, through the renewable energy gained from its solar photovoltaic panels. There are additional plans to sell back any power surplus.

New York state’s largest on-farm, co-digestion biogas power plant is set to open this week.

New York state’s largest on-farm, co-digestion biogas power plant is set to open this week.

The on-site power facility will generate 1.4 MW of energy, reports Energy Efficiency News.

CH4 Biogas built and operates the plant at a dairy farm southwest of the city of Rochester, and the plant houses a 120,000-gallon co-digester to anaerobically digest local food waste and cow manure from the farm to fuel a GE (NYSE: GE) ecomagination Jenbacher J420 biogas engine.

The combination will generate enough electricity to power nearly 1000 homes and will reduce the dairy farm’s greenhouse gas emissions by around 8500 tons of CO2 a year.
Californian jail powered by on-site renewables

S&C Electric Company, a global leader in smart grid solutions and renewable energy integration, has the completion of an energy storage project at the Santa Rita Jail in California, US.

S&C Electric Company, a global leader in smart grid solutions and renewable energy integration, has the completion of an energy storage project at the Santa Rita Jail in California, US.

The new energy storage solution features S&C's PureWave® Storage Management System and helps integrate on-site renewable energy sources and storage at the facility.

The battery storage capabilities enable the jail to purchase power during non-peak hours from the local utility and store the reserves—a process that will end up saving the jail nearly $100,000 dollars per year.

The energy storage system is a key component of the jail's smart microgrid that was engineered and built by Chevron Energy Solutions. The microgrid serves a correctional facility that covers 113 acres and combines solar, wind, and fuel cell energy sources, along with emergency diesel backup, to generate electricity for the facility, which uses 3 MW of electricity daily.

During times when the facility is islanded from the local utility grid, the energy storage system balances the microgrid's load with the total power generated from on-site sources by automatically and instantly storing any energy generated in excess of the load requirements.

The energy storage system also supplies electricity if demand exceeds what the onsite generation sources are generating.

To add the needed energy balancing to the microgrid, S&C provided a 2-MW PureWave® Storage Management System to control the charging and discharging of lithium-ion batteries.

"With the stored energy system, the Santa Rita Jail can use on-site renewable generation to power the facility in the event of a power disruption on the utility grid," says Jim Sember, S&C Vice President—Power Quality Products.

The project was funded in part by the 2009 federal stimulus, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, reports Earth Techling.

The project comprises two 1650-kilowatt (kW) wind turbines (yielding a total capacity of 3.3 MW), which provide power to the 670,000-square-foot manufacturing plant, which employs 760 staff.

The company, which makes haircare and styling aid products and is owned by global cosmetics giant Shiseido, said the onsite wind turbines were a first in the beauty industry.

Zotos said the wind project was expected to meet nearly 60 per cent of the Geneva plant’s power needs. To make up the remaining 40 per cent, the company recently entered into an agreement to purchase up to 9 million kW of green energy.
Oklahoma State University moves forward with wind power project

A new 60 MW on-site wind farm near Blackwell, Oklahoma has received approval from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission in late February.

A new 60 MW on-site wind farm near Blackwell, Oklahoma has received approval from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission in late February.

OSU officials say the project will allow the university to take down its 62-year-old cogeneration power plant.

Rick Krysiak, the director of OSU's Physical Plant, said the university expects to see up to $30m in savings over the 20-year life of the project.

Up to now, Krysiak said, the university's power plant has had the capacity to produce about a third of the electricity the university uses through the use of seven steam-driven turbines.

In addition to cost savings, the university will also be able to reduce its carbon footprint by about 66 percent.
NHS not tapping into on-site power potential

A spokesman for a leading outsourcing firm says that NHS trusts need to explore their potential for on-site energy

A spokesman for a leading outsourcing firm says that NHS trusts need to explore their potential for on-site energy.

Director of asset management at MITIE, Mark Denham said that trusts needed to view their residual waste arisings as a potential fuel source that could be exploited on-site through energy recovery, reports Edie Waste.

"One of the trends we are seeing among NHS trusts is waste-to-energy, we're seeing that energy conversation being brought increasingly into waste talks - especially around the thermal treatment of clinical waste," he told delegates.

He referred to the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust in Hampstead that is using combined heat and power and generating direct savings of £1.7m annually as well as displacing over 20% of carbon emissions.

"Moving the heat is just the beginning, there is also a community benefit. Surplus heat from the trust will be exported to 1,500 council home tenants and help to alleviate fuel poverty," he said.

Denham added that selling surplus heat onto the council would generate around £1M in annual revenue for the trust, an amount "enough to provide an intensive care bed for an additional 588 days."

General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE), is to join with Arista Power Inc. (ASPW) to sell systems that store electricity for commercial customers and release it when demand is highest, helping to cut bills.

Bloomberg reports that the system, which will use GE’s Durathon batteries, can store power from on-site wind or solar sources or from the grid and deliver it during peak periods, when commercial customers are subject to “demand charges,” according to a statement today.

The charges can account for as much as 70 per cent of an electric bill for commercial customers, which include shopping centers and office buildings.

It gives business owners control over their power “much more effectively and efficiently,” William Schmitz, chief executive officer of Rochester, New York-based Arista, said in a phone interview today. GE and Arista will promote and market the system.

GE’s Durathon nickel-salt battery can last as long as 20 years, operate in extreme temperatures and is marketed for telecommunications, utilities and uninterruptible power supply applications, according to the statement.
(NYSE Amex:ADGE), has been recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Partnership for the carbon emissions reductions of the Company's CHP systems.

It is the sixth consecutive year that the on-site utility has been lauded for it’s commitment to emissions reduction.

American DG Energy, a member of the CHP Partnership, was presented with a greenhouse gas reduction certificate by the EPA in recognition of the Company's contribution to efficient U.S. energy production.

The 2011 certificate states that the high efficiency of the Company's CHP systems prevented an estimated 28,000 metric tons of carbon equivalents as compared to typical energy supply systems, resulting in annual carbon emissions reductions equivalent to electricity used annually by 2,920 homes.

This represents a 21 per cent increase over the Company's emissions reductions stated in the 2010 certificate.

"With Earth Day 2012 approaching on Sunday, April 22, 2012, we are pleased that our highly efficient energy systems continue to lower carbon emissions," said John N. Hatsopoulos, Chief Executive Officer of American DG Energy. "It is an honor to be recognized for improving the environment and helping our customers."
