We’re excited to let you know about a project we’ve been working on for the past few months — a major redesign of Onavo Extend for iPhone. Now, you can send more email, share more photos and stay connected with friends, all without spending more on your data plan. Once you’ve installed Onavo Extend, it will work behind the scenes to save data and it will automatically turn itself off when you connect to Wi-Fi so you’re always getting the best mobile experience possible.

We’ve overhauled and simplified the design so the data you’ve saved per month, per day and per app is easier to see at a glance and understand.

In addition to improving how the app looks and works, we’ve added some enhancements we hope you’ll love:

Interactive graphs: See how much data you’ve saved per month, or tap and hold the graph to see your savings for a specific day.

Immediate savings info: Within seconds of using mobile data, the interactive graphs in Onavo Extend will update to show you how much you’ve saved.

Top saving apps: See how much Onavo Extend is helping you save in the apps you use, starting with the ones where you’ve saved the most.

Image quality settings: Choose between best quality images to save less, lower quality images to save more or something in-between. When you connect to Wi-Fi, Onavo Extend will turn itself off so you always get the best quality images without using up your data.

The new version on Onavo Extend for iPhone is available for free in the App Store. Get it today and start saving.

We’ve long recognized that not everyone has access to unlimited data plans, and it’s important for people to have the ability to effectively track and manage how they use mobile data. At Onavo, we build apps designed to help you better understand and manage the data you use on a daily basis.

We previously released Onavo Count, an app that monitors and analyzes how you use all types of mobile data and helps you compare your use to the average Onavo user. Today we’re excited to announce an updated version for Android.

The new version includes two major changes:

Redesigned widgets. We’ve redesigned the overview widget to make it resizable and change colors based on how much data you have left in your billing period.

Time spent in apps. Sometimes you want to know more than just how much data you’re using. In the new Onavo Count, you’ll see the time you’ve spent in each app and how your use compares to the time other people spent in the same app.

The new Onavo Count is already available for all Android users in the Google Play store. Thanks for using Onavo Count!

In October, you may have read the exciting news that Facebook acquired Onavo. We knew that by working together, we could make both services better. Our goal is for Onavo to operate as it does today, and for our team to help improve Facebook’s mobile experiences in the future as well.

Now that we’ve joined Facebook, we’re gaining support that will help us improve our world-class products. We’re also excited about how we can help Facebook work more efficiently in parts of the world where mobile data charges are prohibitively expensive. Onavo’s compression and other technology can increase Internet access and advance Facebook’s goal of connecting the world by decreasing the cost of data services for billions more people.

Today we are updating our terms of service and privacy policy to reflect this new partnership. The new privacy policy will apply to new Onavo users only. Our terms and privacy policy will not change for anyone who has already installed our apps and is using our services today.

With this policy change, we’re making sure you know that Onavo is part of Facebook. Onavo and Facebook will use Onavo data to better understand how people and apps use mobile data plans.

Onavo will continue to offer an opt-out. If you opt out, we would only use your data for the delivery, improvement and development of our services, but not for research and analytics.

Please take a few moments to read through the new terms of service and privacy policy.

We have worked hard over the past three years to develop world-class products that help people use mobile devices in a safer and more cost effective way. We are proud of our work and know that being part of the Facebook family will allow us to improve our products, create new ones, and expand our offerings to many more people across the globe.

We are excited to announce that Facebook has agreed to acquire our company.

Three years ago, we started Onavo with the goal of helping today’s technology consumers and companies work more efficiently in a mobile world. We developed the award-winning Onavo mobile utility apps, and later launched Onavo Insights, the first mobile market intelligence service based on real engagement data. Our service helps people save money through more efficient use of data, and also helps developers, large and small, design better experiences for people.

We’ve built world-class products and a remarkably talented team which has pioneered important breakthroughs in data compression technology and mobile analytics. Today, we’re eager to take the next step and make an even bigger impact by supporting Facebook’s mission to connect the world.

As you know, Facebook and other mobile technology leaders recently launched Internet.org, formalizing Facebook’s commitment to improving access to the internet for the next 5 billion people — this is a challenge we’re also passionate about.

We’re excited to join their team, and hope to play a critical role in reaching one of Internet.org’s most significant goals – using data more efficiently, so that more people around the world can connect and share. When the transaction closes, we plan to continue running the Onavo mobile utility apps as a standalone brand. As always, we remain committed to the privacy of people who use our application and that commitment will not change.

We are incredibly proud of the talented team we have assembled, and, recognizing this, Onavo’s Tel-Aviv office will remain open for business and will become Facebook’s new Israeli office.

We’ll continue to advance the work we are doing in collaboration with Facebook’s great team. Thank you to everyone who has joined us on this journey. We’d like to extend a special thanks to our investors, who believed in us and in our vision from the early days. We’re excited for what’s next.

With our new iOS7 compatible VPN, you will be able to have your cake and eat it too. More specifically, you will be able to Count and Extend your mobile data without the sacrifice of speed, connectivity, access, or battery life. Not sure how it works?

Let’s go a bit further into detail.

From the beginning, Onavo has been utilizing VPN connections to help you get the most out of your mobile data. We chose VPN in order to provide a better service available to all iOS devices with no carrier restrictions. Today, the Onavo VPN is more efficient than ever with vast performance improvements for Onavo Extend and Onavo Count.

Improved data speeds As pictured above, all mobile data requests from your smartphone automatically go through Onavo’s content delivery network before returning to your operator. Now with the new, more efficient VPN, data from and VoIP and video calls, take a more direct path to your device. This will ultimately save you a lot of time and power in your everyday iPhone usage.

Improved connection times Every time the VPN is activated, a new session begins. Previously, the VPN would make an initial attempt to connect while on Wi-Fi and then register that you are not using mobile data. Only then would it choose to pause the service. Now, the VPN will not even attempt to connect while you are on Wi-Fi, clearly separating sessions and activating the VPN on 3G with almost no delay.

Lower battery usage It’s something that we all want and have found to be a common pain-point. With the smarter, faster VPN your iPhones and iPads simply don’t have to work as hard. Who says we can’t lighten the load while being better than ever?

No icon on Wi-Fi So, I can’t see the “VPN” logo anymore…is it still working? When you switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi, the VPN service pauses as you are no longer limited with data restrictions. Instead of giving you a notification that the VPN is paused it simply disappears giving you a clear, immediate indication of the VPN’s status.

For Onavo Protect Users: We want to bring the power and efficiency of the new VPN to all of our users, including those with Onavo Protect. In doing so, we want to assure that the safety we have been providing all along remains as strong as ever. While the new VPN is not yet available for Onavo Protect users, it will be very soon. Be sure to stay tuned for the latest updates.

*If you haven’t already, be sure to update your VPN in preparation for iOS7 (and simply because it’s better).

In our latest release of Onavo Count for Android, we introduced App Guide. It is already one of the most used features of the app…and this is just the beginning.

App Guide has three key functions. The first, lists the top 20 apps which we rank by factoring in of the number of active users and the amounts of data used. Trending apps, the second aspect shows apps that have recently spiked in usage over the last month. Last but certainly not least, is the ability to see how an app will affect your data plan.

In the endless array of apps, it is not always clear what is actually relevant or useful. When an app launches there are ratings, press coverage, and drives to downloads. It seems that everyone is telling you to download the latest and greatest new app out there. Top apps from App Guide are there because they are being used the most.

Too many app choices and not enough data- Who would have thought this would actually be an issue? When we see a new app whether useful or entertaining, it takes only a moment for us to hit “download”. Before you know it, you have 3 utility apps that have similar purposes, that you don’t really use (and are eating away at your data). Based on your data usage forecast and the data usage averages of an app, App Guide will let you know if it will fit into your data plan before you download it. Now you can take data budgeting to a proactive level. Prevent your data usage from exceeding your data cap instead of slowing it down once you see it approaching the limit.

As developers and data consumers, we feel it is important to continue improving App Guide, making it even more useful. Stay tuned for even more developments on this feature.

Now that we have redesigned Onavo Count for Android, we thought the widgets should get a makeover as well. Not only do the new widgets have a fresh look, they have an even better functionality. The Stats, Live, and Apps widgets each provide you with a different perspective of your data usage, on the fly.

Stats Widget Formally known as the progress bar, the Stats widget has even more functionality, showing not only the data you have used but also how much you have left. Even better, to the right is a thumbnail view of your overview cycle (this also changes color as you progress). See how you are doing in a single view.

In August of 2011, we first launched Onavo Count. In the two years that have passed, millions of Android users have used Onavo Count to take control of their mobile data. Onavo Count has been called “the best data usage tracker for Android” by Lifehacker, and AndroidPit called it “the best damn data monitoring app for Android, period.”

Now, we are introducing a redesigned Onavo Count to equip you for the challenge of budgeting your mobile data usage. With sleek and simple reports, you will see where you stand in your data usage and how your usage compares to everyone else’s.

Your data life

Onavo Count’s overview screen shows you where your data usage habits lie in real-life terms by translating your app usage into easily understandable categories, such as music, maps and video. Changing visuals will alert you as your approach your data cap and give you an indication of where you stand in your current data cycle.

See how much data your apps are using

With customizable charts, view your historical data usage per day, week, or month. Understand usage even further with the app list displaying data usage per-app. Onavo’s crack team of engineers worked hard to deliver the most accurate information possible – even showing you how much data was used by apps in the foreground and how much in the background without the apps even being open. For users of Onavo Extend, seamless integration shows you how much data you are saving.

How you measure up

Beyond your personal data usage, you can now see your ranking, how your usage compares with others. Onavo Count 2.0 will show you what usage percentile you fall into for all of your apps.

Introducing App Guide

With App Guide you can see the top and trending apps based on usage. See which apps are being used the most and how much data they typically use. Onavo Count will also predict if you can fit them into your monthly data budget based on projected usage. Now you can find apps that people are actually using to make a better-informed decision before your next download.

With Onavo Count 2.0, you will see your mobile data like you’ve never seen it before. You will be able to understand your data usage in a way that is most relevant to your mobile life. The combination of reporting and advice features go beyond simply tracking your data usage.

Your life is going mobile, so keep Count.
