ABC just aired their remake of V, the original of which clearly inspired Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day, so it seemed appropriate to post today. When it was released, Independence Day became the second highest grossing film of all time, and even for a blockbuster that relies so heavily on special effects, it’s held up remarkably well.

Wow! My first introduction to the vast world of dinosaur collectibles was the Playskool triceratops. Each of the deluxe dinosaurs came with your dino, at least one caveman, a saddle of some manner, and a book that usually depicted a story of how the dino and human met. Even the smaller dinosaurs at least came with a story book inside. There were dozens of these things by the end of their run and, indeed, you could play with them real rough!

Dinosaurs + toys = epic win. Duh. Though the presence of humans is deeply disconcerting.

Before there was American Idol, there was Star Search, hosted by Ed McMahon. Star Search showcased us such future stars as Dave Chappelle, Norm MacDonald, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, Alanis Morissette, Tiffany, Christina Aguilera, Drew Carey, Brad Garrett, Carlos Mencia, Adam Sandler, Sharon Stone, and Rosie O’Donnell (among many others who also went on to be famous).

It’s amazing that sometimes I can barely remember basic math but can still draw a “stussy symbol” (also called a “Super S” in some regions) without hesitating. I remember these stylized “S’s” being drawn on every available scrap of paper, but unless you knew the secret of the lines, you were out of the cool club. We called them “stussies” but I don’t think they had any relation to the Stussy company that was popular at the time. Everyone thought that this was a unique symbol that only they and their friends knew how to draw, but talk to your friends from around the country and you’ll find out that they too knew how to make a super cool “S” out of 14 lines.

We called them Super S’s where I grew up, so I went all New Yorker and fact checked Lauren’s story. She’s 100% correct, as far as I can tell.

Puppy Surprise was an early ’90s toy from Mattel that could come with anywhere between 2 to 5 puppies in her womb. The womb was velcro, so your puppy could give birth over and over again to your heart’s content. I had one, and I loved mine (I got gipped though – 2 puppies).

There’s a phrase you don’t hear everyday: “velcro womb.”

Apparently most kids were getting two or three puppies, rarely the coveted five puppy payoff. Googling “puppy surprise” came up with this hilariously NSFW (language-wise, at least) rant about getting only three puppies. An excerpt:

I think we can all relate to Bread and Jam for Frances. Lots of kids go through a phase where they only want to eat one food — grilled cheese, PBJ, chicken fingers, etc. (Personally, I was a hot dog kid.) I just saw a commercial on television for Kit Kat Bars, and I remembered the good old commercials they used to have with the very catchy song: “Give me a break, give me a break. Break me off a piece of that KIT KAT BAR!”

Neat fact: Kit Kats have become popular in Japan recently because it sounds so similar to kitto katsu, which translates to “You will surely win!” Apparently that makes them good luck charms.

Rush is like a sexual explosion of sound. Greatest drummer of all time and greatest bass player of all time, plus an excellent guitarist are pretty sweet right? Well, not until you add the incredible lyrics and the fact the just three guys can recreate a symphony of sound with total perfection that make professional musicians say HOLY F! As a kid I loved this song, and also the way the band spoke to non-conformist kids who weren’t ready to go full goth or full jock but just wanted to maintain some individuality in high school. This is what real talent looks like.

We adore Crocodile Dundee in the States, but what do Australians think of the movie? Well, it’s actually the highest grossing film of all time (adjusted for inflation) in the Land Down Under.

When does something become nostalgic? When somebody decides to remake it, I suppose. ABC’s turning this 1983 sci-fi mini-series into a brand new series. I suspect disaster, but at least it’s based on fairly classic source material.

Keep America Beautiful was established in 1953, about fifty years before environmentalism and “going green” became the cool thing all the cool kids were doing to be cool. Way cool. In addition to launching the iconic Crying Indian PSA, they also coined the term litterbug.
