Why Does Chocolate Make Some People Sneeze?

My girlfriend just asked this question...

"I notice that every time I eat chocolate candy bar, I start to sneeze."

Good question and the first thing came to my was an allergy reaction, well, I'm wrong!

This is what I've found:

Question: Why Does Chocolate Make Some People Sneeze?

Answer: We’ve been hearing this one for years; there are those who swear up and down that chocolate makes some people sneeze, yet they are not allergic to chocolate. So what’s the scoop? Are these people imagining things, or can chocolate really make you sneeze?

Yes! Chocolate can make some people sneeze, in the same way that bright sunlight or mints or red wine or other apparently unrelated triggers do. There is a phenomenon called “photic sneeze reflex” (“photic” is for bright lights, the most common cause of this type of sneezing). One theory about this reflex involves overstimulation of the optic nerve (which can occur when you look at bright sunlight) and that it somehow messes with the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for sneeze production.

But that doesn’t explain why some people sneeze when they eat chocolate. Sneezing is a result of breathing in a foreign particle, some kind of irritant. The body rids itself of these irritants with a sneeze. Yet this type of sneezing is not associated with an allergy to chocolate. Clearly, this reflex is not well-understood. It is thought that the reflex is transmitted hereditarily, and it afflicts roughly 20 to 35 percent of the population. The National Center for Biotechnology Information refers to photic sneeze reflex by its technical name, Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helioopthalmic Syndrome (ACHOO for short—no kidding; look it up).

Luckily, the photic sneezing that results from eating chocolate is not serious. From anecdotal evidence we’ve seen, darker chocolate (70% and above) tends to induce sneezing in more people. What to do if you love chocolate but it makes you sneeze? Have a few tissues at hand and get ready for some puzzled looks when you explain ACHOO to others in the room, but know that you don’t need to stop consuming one of your favorite foods.

Legendary Baking of Denver, CO, has expanded its recall of 34 ounce packages of Private Selection Salted Caramel Chocolate Almond Pie because the almonds and eggs were not listed in the ingredient statement. People who have allergies to almonds and eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled Private Selection Salted Caramel Chocolate Almond Pies were distributed in Kroger, Fry’s, and Smith’s retail stores in the following states: AL, AZ, GA, IL, IN, KY, MI, NM, OH, SC, TN, and WV. Legendary Baking has expanded this recall because the product also went to Fred Meyer, King Soopers, and City Market retail stores in the following states: CO, ID, NM, OR, UT, WA, and WY.

The product comes in a 34 ounce, clear plastic package dome with a black plastic bottom base and is marked with lot # CH17025 on the side of the clear plastic dome.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered by the manufacturing facility that the almond and egg-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not have the correct product ingredient statement and allergen declaration. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary error in the packaging processes.

Consumers who have purchased 34 ounce packages of Private Selection Salted Caramel Chocolate Almond Pie are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund should they have allergen issues. Consumers with additional questions and concerns may contact Legendary Baking at 1-844-617-8238 Monday-Friday 8a-5pm CST.

I can’t believe I’m talking to you guys here again… But this is another HELLO! So many things have happened to me with the births of my 4 grandchildren, jobs, traveling, but honestly I’ve been missing blogging so much.

There have been so many times I came back to my blog, and just stared at a few posts that I am super proud of, smile, and clicked out of it on my browser. It is something I've always been super proud of. Just because the busy adult full-time working life, it's not enough for me to leave it there for good.

So... It's been just a tad of 3 years since I quietly left this space, and I can't wait to dig back in again. There is no promise of how often I would update my blog now. I'm now super pumped and feeling inspired again, which took me so long to have this feeling.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) along with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Pro-Amino International are warning people not to consume these high protein bars, which may contain Salmonella.

What are the Symptoms of Illness/Injury?

Salmonella is a public health risk and is one of the most common causes of foodborne illness. Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with the Pro-Amino product subject to this recall should contact their health care provider immediately.

Who is at Risk?

Consumers who have purchased or received the ProtiDiet High Protein Chocolate Dream Bars are at risk. They should not eat this product.

What Do Consumers Need To Do?

Consumers should avoid eating the potentially contaminated High Protein Chocolate Dream Bars and discard the product or return it to the point of sale.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - January 3, 2013 - Gilster-Mary Lee of Chester, Illinois is voluntarily recalling one lot of Chocolate Chunk Brownie Mix because it contains cartons containing undeclared walnuts. (Wrong packaging/cartons were used that do not declare walnuts). People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The only brand involved is Food Club Chocolate Chunk Brownie Mix packaged in cases of 12/14.25oz. Cartons have a Best By date of NOV 28 13 D02 (UPC# 36800-13486). This Best By date code is located on the corrugated case AND on the top flap of the carton. Consumers should return the product to the store or discard it.

The product was distributed to Abingdon, VA. Warehouse on December 5, 2012.

Gilster-Mary Lee became aware of the mis-packaging during an internal review. Investigation indicated that during this production run walnut brownie cartons were inadvertently exchanged with plain Chocolate Chunk Brownie cartons. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.
