Matthew Dear, Asa Breed [Ghostly, 2007]

Style: House, Techno

RIYL: Audion, TV On The Radio

Matthew Dear drifts further into pop territory with the follow up to his wildly successful Leave Luck to Heaven album. What’s so captivating about this record is how he’s able to switch from more dance-oriented material to more songwriter material so effortlessly. I think with this record Matthew is displaying his talent without genre restrictions, and the result is very impressive and without a doubt his strongest material to date. A must have for the dancefloor or the iPod.

People Press Play, People Press Play [Morr Music, 2007]

Style: Electronic Pop

RIYL: Ms. John Soda, Stina Nordenstam

Another project from the members of System and Future 3 (also known as Opiate, Dub Tractor, and Acustic, individually), this record has them teaming up with female vocalist Savery for vocal electronic music that doesn’t rely on Morr’s normal Postal Service influenced sound. Recalling the shoegaze-drenched Herrmann & Kleine classic “Blue Flower”, Savery’s voice floats over the production seamlessly, and this, coupled with the talents of all three producers, creates a perfect summer pop record without any of the contrivances of Morr’s other forays into the genre.

Savath & Savalas, Golden Pollen [Anti, 2007]

Style: Folk

RIYL: Juana Molina, Devendra Banhart

Scott Herren’s third venture into Catalan folk, this time making the journey alone, is by far the most rewarding S & S release since Folk Songs for Trains, Trees, and Honey. The lack of a dedicated collaborator on this release (though there are some guest spots) allows Herren to focus on the production a bit more and concoct more complementary tunes that recall the beauty of the project before it became Herren’s vehicle for exploring his Spanish roots.

Vorpal, The End [Cock Rock Disco, 2007]

Style: Breakcore, IDM

RIYL: Venetian Snares, Jason Forrest

Vorpal follows up his excellent Digressions from last year with a free for download EP on Cock Rock Disco. Vorpal’s MO here remains the same, weaving in a slew of different sounds upon a breakcore aesthetic. The opener and title track is a 16 minute epic originally meant to cover the A side of a 12”. This whiplash inducing track only sets the table for the rest of the EP, which includes five new tracks more on the downtempo tip, and chaotic remixes from Mothboy, Jason Forrest, and Cardopusher. More collisions of musicality and chaos from Vorpal.

Fridge, The Sun [Temporary Residence, 2007]

Style: Post Rock

RIYL: Four Tet, Mice Parade

Experimental post-rockers Fridge return after a five year absence with their fifth album. Made up of members Kieran Hebden AKA Four Tet, Adem, and drummer Sam Jeffers, this record comes off very much so as a muted Four Tet album, which may spark indifference from critics, but the emphasis is not the experimentation as in the past, but in arrangement and composition. In that respect it’s very successful, and produces strong, if subtle songs. If you were expecting something very off the wall from this reunion, you may be disappointed, but otherwise, this is a very solid record from some skilled artists.

Luke Vibert, Benefist [First Cask, 2007]

Style: Acid

RIYL: Two Lone Swordsmen, Mouse On Mars

Luke Vibert returns with more party acid on this new full length. If you’ve heard his early Acid EP’s on the Planet Mu label, you know what to expect. Funky acid lines with the traditional Vibert charm. This is much more dance-oriented and has much simpler programming than the Analords or The Tuss, but never sounds monotonous or boring. Full lengths on Planet Mu and Warp due later this year. The man is prolific, while still managing to maintain quality control.

Bola, Kroungrine [Skam, 2007]

Style: IDM

RIYL: Secede, Proem

Bola returns on the rejuvenated Skam label with some of his best material since Soup (yes, I’m one of those people that prefers Soup to Fyuti). There’s an element of funkiness riding through this album that I haven’t really seen in a lot of his stuff. It’s as if he’s playing a real bass guitar over the top of his beats. I don’t know if that’s the right way to describe it, but whatever the process, it injects an excitement into his songs that I don’t really see with others clinging to the stereotypical IDM style. This is an album that recalls the freshness of Tri Repetae without making you wish you hadn’t heard it all before.

The Tuss, Rushup Edge [Rephlex, 2007]

Style: Acid

RIYL: Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert

Now that the dust has settled on the message board debates and the fake MySpaces, this has all but been confirmed as the new Aphex Twin material fans thought they would have to wait years for after the Analord series. Stylistically, it remains close to the Analords, but pushes the aggression and the programming to a more complex level, much moreso resembling Analord 10 than 1. But amazingly, after 40+ tracks of Acid released over the course of 2006 in the Analord series, Rushup Edge still sounds fairly fresh and in no way a retread. A real feat for Richard, or whoever’s doing his best to resemble him on this record.

iTAL tEK, Snippets [Netlab, 2007]

Style: Dubstep, Experimental

RIYL: Autechre, Boxcutter

New school dubstepper iTAL tEK delivers this album of “unreleased material and unfinished ideas”, but oddly enough it sounds fairly polished and more complex than his dubstep material. Collected to expose sounds not normally found in his existing material, this album seems to have more in common with late Autechre than Skream. “Ringpull” could even pass for a classic Aphex Twin track. All in all, this collection shows the diversity of iTAL’s talent, and that he is not just another fly-by-night dubstepper. 12” “Bloodline” released on Planet Mu this month as well.

Burial, Ghost Hardware [Hyperdub, 2007]

Style: Dubstep

RIYL: Digital Mystikz, Kode9

Mysterious dubstep producer Burial returns with a surprise 12” on the Hyperdub label that continues his journey into the London underground with plenty of bass, reverb, and old soul samples. While not necessarily a progression of his sound, this, along with the excellent “Unite” off the Box of Dub compilation, shows Burial will not be a one album wonder. If you can get past the similar vibe and sample re-usage, this is highly recommended.

The North Sea, Exquisite Idols [Type, 2007]

Style: Folk

RIYL: Rameses III, Brightblack Morning Light

The North Sea delivers his debut album after last year’s collaboration with Rameses III Night of the Ankou. This album is the perfect spring summer folk album, announcing that the trees are green again and that the sun is about to shine. Gorgeous, acoustic melodies, and sometimes very faint vocals beckon the impending solstice with a purity and beauty that never grows monotonous (as with some of Type’s other offers). A real winner for the Type label, which seems to be getting into a groove after initially undeserved, hyperbolic praise.

Feist, The Reminder [Cherrytree, 2007]

Style: Pop Rock, Lounge

RIYL: Stars, Sufjan Stevens

Feist delivers her third album, and it is the summer pop record as far as I’m concerned. Feist’s heralded 2004 album Let it Die toed the line between cuteness and cheesiness, and with this record, she never so much as approaches the latter, because she is so in control of her craft at this point, the songs just sound like natural lullabies. While her songs sometimes approach extreme simplicity, Feist never makes the songs dull, as her voice is strong enough to carry songs through any moment.

Apparat, Walls [Shitkatapult, 2007]

Style: IDM

RIYL: Arovane, ISAN

After last year’s incredibly successful joint venture with Ellen Allien, Apparat ditches the dancefloor to return to the vocal material he first explored on “Contradition” and since expanded on the EP’s Shapemodes and Silizium. Apparat seems to be the one artist making vocal electronic music that doesn’t sound a carbon copy of the Postal Service, and the result are strong songs that show that the synthesis of electronics and vocals offer more than poppy club tunes or indie pop love songs.

Battles, Mirrored [Warp, 2007]

Style: Math Rock

RIYL: Don Caballero, Tortoise

Battles release their debut album after three EP’s, and it’s one of the most unique records of the year. Battles have created such a unique take on Math Rock, with hard-hitting drums, chipmunkish vocals, and guitar and electronic arrangements where you’re never sure which instrument is actually making the sound because they’re all connected together by so many wires. With this record, Battles are able to channel the unique energy and sound of their live show into a cohesive record, a feat not only impressive technically, but musically as well.

Seefeel, Quique (Redux Edition) [Too Pure, 2007]

Style: Shoegaze, Ambient

RIYL: Ride, Slowdive

Seefeel’s tremendous first album has been re-issued by Too Pure with a bonus CD of unreleased and rare material. Seefeel, growing tired of traditional shoegaze material, produced a genre-bending album of "what is electronic and what is guitar" sounds, creating a very unique shoegaze ambient mix that sounds just completely entrancing and hasn’t been captured since.

Black Moth Super Rainbow, Dandelion Gum [2007]

Style: Psychedelic, Indielectronic

RIYL: Plone, Stereolab

Black Moth Super Rainbow return with their unique blend of electronic meets rock psychedelia. Vocoded lyrics about sunshine, flowers, and the seasons pepper playful instrumental and electronic arrangements, always focusing on more outward, verbose melodies than, say, Plone (or other Duophonic artists), while retaining the playfulness of those types of sounds.

Tobias Thomas, Please Please Please [Kompakt, 2007]

RIYL: Michael Mayer, Pantha du Prince

Kompakt continue their tradition of scene-defining mix CD’s with this release from longtime label compatriot Tobias Thomas. Running the gamut from minimal to uptempo to Fleetwood Mac covers, this mix never manages to grow tiresome while highlighting the top tracks across numerous styles of German dance music with excellent and inventive mixing all the way through.

Port-Royal, Afraid To Dance [Resonant, 2007]

Style: Ambient, Post Rock

RIYL: Sigur Ros, Epic45

Italian post-rockers Port-Royal have a way of blending post rock composition with the tradition of ambience to create soundscapes that are soothing and serene instead of calculated and controlling. A different take on post rock, Port-Royal would be more likely to be confused with Loscil than Mogwai. If you’re like me and think that most post rock is inherently apocalyptic, Port-Royal makes music for when the world simply fades away instead of comes to a crashing halt.

Acustic, Welcome [Rump, 2005]

Style: IDM, Downtempo

RIYL: ISAN, Yasume

A long-time collaborator with Dub Tractor and Opiate in the groups Future 3, System, and the upcoming People Press Play, this solo record is a gorgeous journey through the sounds of IDM and downtempo. Sounding more like some of Dub Tractor’s other label mates at City Centre Offices, Acustic creates the type of melodious, atmospheric music that label has become so known for, and he has the skill to match. An artist maybe overshadowed a bit by his frequent collaborators, Acustic is a very skilled producer that deserves a bit more attention.

Strategy, Future Rock [Kranky, 2007]

Style: Downtempo

RIYL: Jan Jelinek, The Orb

Community Library label head and all around electronic music taskmaster Paul Dickow has created a very fine record for Kranky. Synthesizing a lot of Dickow's musical history and covering a wide variety of sounds crossing from ambient to house to dub, this has got to be his defining work, and a statement as to how he sees the cross-referencing of sounds and genres progressing. An interesting listen for anyone who likes music that defies genre boundaries.

A collection of the early work of Ken Downey, Ed Handley, and Andy Turner (the latter two also members of Plaid), this lays out exactly why Black Dog Productions (including Plaid) are so heralded as innovators of the post-rave sound and IDM. A stunning collection with tracks going as far back as 1989 still sounding fresh today, this is a compilation rivaling Plaid’s Trainer and a history lesson any fan of electronic music needs to hear.

Victor Bermon, Arriving At Night [Hefty, 2007]

Ever wonder where those great jazz samples come from in your favorite Prefuse or Bonobo tracks? Instead of crate-digging for them, Victor’s gone and just one-upped them on this stellar release from Hefty. Going for the calm and subtle jazz vibe, Victor nails it perfectly and without and monotony or filler. It’s recalls the music Scott Herren made under Savath & Savalas before a trip to Spain, the type of record the Cinematic Orchestra would retire after. A fantastic debut.

Boom Bip, Sacchrilege [Lex, 2007]

RIYL: Plus Device, Kerrier District

Boom Bip throws fans another curveball and releases what he calls his first release for DJ’s. Five songs of Italo Disco and Electro, this EP recalls last year’s Plus Device project (rumored to be Jimmy Edgar and Dabrye) with talented producers taking their aim at old styles of electronic music besides Acid. Though not exactly liking this direction after the successful fusion of instruments and electronics on his last album, this is still a succesful venture into the style. It will be interesting to see if this is a one off for Mr. Bip, or if his album later this year will follow the same path.

Junior Boys, Dead Horse [Domino, 2007]

Style: Techno, Ambient

RIYL: The Knife, Herbert

Junior Boys let five artists completely reinterpret (and improve) tracks from last year’s So This Is Goodbye on this remix EP. Carl Craig makes a stunning extended take of “Like A Child”, and Kode9 almost completely discards the original track in his atmospheric, dubby revision of “Double Shadow”. Hot Chip’s take on “In The Morning” has a strangely enchanting build-up, and Ten Snake (an artist I’ve never heard of) furthers bolsters the dancefloor in genre-bending fashion with his remix of “FM”. Ambient master Marsen Jules closes the album with another take of “FM” using sampled-based ambience.

Deerhunter, Flourescent Grey [Kranky, 2007]

Deerhunter follows up their critically acclaimed, if inconsistent, debut album with this gorgeous EP. The short form allows Deerhunter to drop the filler for very strong, yet varied songs in tempo and style. This EP solidifies Deerhunter as not just another overhyped indie outfit, but an emerging band full of talent and promise whose songs can tell a right story without surrounding them in ambience.

The Tuss, Confederation Trough [ Rephlex, 2007]

Style: Acid, Experimental

RIYL: Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert

Is it Aphex Twin? Or more correctly, is it Analord? If it is or not, this could not appear more like Analord 12 if it had the Aphex symbol on the cover. Forgetting the rumors and speaking of the music, this release (three tracks, one exclusive on 12” and CD) has all of the twisted analog sounds that made the Analords so enjoyable, and goes even more experimental and alien with the sound. Yes, this is Acid, but it doesn’t sound like Acid music, as it’s in the hands of a skilled enough producer to turn it into something new and fresh, albeit a bit rough.

Anders Ilar, Ludwijka [Shitkatapult, 2007]

Style: IDM

RIYL: Bola, Secede

Shitkatapult re-releases and expands the limited edition 12” Ludwijka on now defunct Merck into album length. This release sees Anders drifting closer to IDM rather than Techno, and doing so in convincing fashion. Ludwijka’s beats are dense, but the melodies carry the weight to coincide with them for a captivating listen. The moods drift from serene to menacing and back, creating a turbulent journey. For fans of the Sending Orbs label for sure.

Signaldrift, Set Design [Consumer's Research and Development, 2005]

RIYL: Seefeel, Sensiva

Another artist carving his own path behind the footprints of Boards of Canada, Signaldrift conjures of electronic nostalgia of the Boards with the guitar ambience of Seefeel to create an utterly trance-inducing sound. So, if you at all enjoyed previous recommendations Free Festival or Sensiva, this is an artist you need to become familiar with. Past releases on Audraglint and Wobblyhead are also worth tracking down.

Reso, Toasted [Pitch Black, 2007]

Style: Dubstep

RIYL: Boxcutter, Burial

Reso is a new dubstep producer that happens not to be a Loefah or Skream clone. On the A side, he goes very genre-binding, recalling the experimental dub sounds of Boxcutter, and on the B he goes darker and more traditional, with heavy looming bass, but still a unique mix of sounds that show Reso maybe emerging as one of the few new dubsteppers ready to push this sound forward instead of recycling the sounds from >>FWD.

DJ Kentaro, Enter [Ninja Tune, 2007]

Style: Hip-Hop, Turntablism

RIYL: Diplo, Spank Rock

Japanese turntable champ DJ Kentaro releases his first album of original material after many acclaimed mix tapes and world turntable competition victories. This is a chaotic journey through all the forms of DJ music with a ton of guest vocalists, and as such has its highs and lows. This is not a perfect record, but for those looking for something to get the party going, I can’t think of a record made more for that reason.

Amon Tobin, Foley Room [Ninja Tune, 2007]

Style: Experimental

RIYL: Autechre, Matmos

Amon Tobin returns with a collection of music based on found sounds, using instruments in irregular ways, and an altogether different approach of sampling and composition. His most ambitious work to date, Amon succeeds in expanding his palette once again, moving further away from his jazz and jungle roots more into musique concrete and the completely uncategorizable.

Panda Bear, Person Pitch [Paw Tracks, 2007]

Style: Indie Rock

RIYL: Beach Boys, Animal Collective

A solo project from Animal Collective member Noah Lennox, Panda Bear channels the seminal magic of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys for this sophomore album. The songs here sound so dated, but the production is modern, creating a juxtaposition which is actually entrancing instead of distracting. It sounds like a classic record form the 1970s, remixed and released 30 years later so it could become a classic for this decade.

Clark, Ted [Warp, 2007]

IDM torchbearer Chris Clark follows up the tremendously solid Body Riddle album (and the two EP’s bookending its release) with even more new music, this time buttressing the release of a video for single “Ted”. What the video lacks in quality is made up for in the new tracks here, including an improved rework of “Springtime Epigram”, a gorgeous acoustic remix by Bibio, and three more new tracks.

Xela, For Frosty Mornings And Summer Nights [Type, 2007]

Style: Downtempo, Glitch

RIYL: Arovane, Telefon Tel Aviv

Xela remasters and reissues his long out of print first album, due to high demand. Upon release, this record completely outclassed the rest of the now defunct Neo Ouija catalog, so it’s nice to see it get its due respect. Unlike either of his two recent records (he seems to change style with every release), this album is unique take on downtempo glitch, with sparse hip hop samples and beats backdropping more traditional (but absolutely gorgeous) IDM melodies. A real revelation upon its release and a stark contrast to The Dead Sea or even Tangled Wool.

Message To Bears, EP1 [Self-released, 2007]

Style: Indielectronic

RIYL: Xela, Bibio

Instrumental acoustic guitarist Jerome Alexander releases his first EP, and it is quite a promising debut. Recalling Xela’s excellent 2004 album Tangled Wool, Message to Bears chooses to play drums, piano, and even a glockenspiel to complement his guitar work. More melodic than complex, this is an incredibly sharp debut and hopefully a tool to get signed and grace us with many more releases of similar quality.

Lukid, Onandon [ Werk, 2007]

Style: Instrumental Hip-Hop, Experimental

RIYL: Dr. Who Dat?, Denzel + Huhn

Somehow managing to channel the sounds of instrumental hip-hop and some of the most experimental electronic music of the last few years into a single album, Lukid’s debut can be somewhat hard to wrap your head around. In a world where artists’ influences can appear paradoxical or sometimes completely unrelated, Lukid hammers the sounds of his influences together into a single sheet of incredibly intriguing electronic music, falling somewhere between Dr. Who Dat? and Denzel + Huhn. For a genre in which producers are struggling more and more to differentiate themselves, Lukid has come up with something completely off the map from Mush or Ninja Tune.

Springintgut, Park And Ride [City Centre Offices, 2007]

RIYL: Mouse On Mars, I'm Not a Gun

A real surprise from City Centre Offices. Andreas Otto AKA Springintgut (the name taken from the street where he lived) uses a cello filtered through an electronic program designed specifically for his use for his compositions, and the result is somewhere between the playfulness of vintage Mouse On Mars and the serenity of I’m Not a Gun. Springintgut is able to maintain a delicate balance between these two styles i.e. electronic and acoustic and plays off it for the album’s best moments.

The Field, From Here We Go To Sublime [Kompakt, 2007]

Style: Techno, Trance

RIYL: John Tejada, Gui Boratto

Kompakt delivered the second fist of their early 2007 one-two punch with the excellent debut by Axel Willner’s project The Field. Following up the highly praised Chromophobia by Gui Boratto, The Field’s debut album goes even further in Kompakt’s statement that 2007 will be the year they uproot the dancefloor and repanel it with their best records. The Field’s productions have the aesthetic of simplicity without reaching for the comforting tag of minimalism. They’re not for a “drowsy dancefloor”, rather an active one that would prefer something cool and pumping rather than cerebral and acceptably monotonous. The Field has easily produced the first great dance record of 2007.

Free The Robots, Free The Robots [Self-released, 2007]

Style: Instrumental Hip-Hop, Future Jazz

RIYL: DJ Shadow, Bonobo

Now this was a nice surprise. A fantastic mix of high energy, jazz-inspired hip-hop and future jazz music, this will excite any fan of the Ninja Tune classics for sure. If you were at all disappointed with the routes taken by DJ Shadow and RJD2 on their recent albums, Free The Robots’ debut EP provides an excellent alternative.

Deceptikon, Greater Cascadia [Merck, 2007]

Style: Instrumental Hip-Hop

RIYL: Flying Lotus, Blockhead

Instrumental hip-hop producer Deceptikon returns with one of the last 12” inch releases for Merck Records. Going a bit more uptempo than the wonderful Lost Subject album, Deceptikon maintains the skill and depth of production that made his debut so gratifying. Always being able to weave emotion, energy, and groove into his beats, Deceptikon is certainly one of the most promising up-and-coming hip-hop producers in the US right now.
