Having been in ministry now for over 30 years, I feel like I’ve ‘seen it all.’ I’m so thankful for the way that God has sustained me in ministry for all these years… It’s been a true blessing. One of the things I’ve been keen to observe in these 30 years is the various ways that local churches partner with and helps missionaries who are a part of their local congregation. In this blog post, I’d like to encourage local church leaders to partner first with missionaries and ministry workers who are in their congregation in addition to those partnerships they may have with people internationally who are not a part of their local congregations. As I’ve written about extensively in my books, being a faithful church leader is hard. The Biblical responsibilities of a Christian church leader are many and the qualifications are extensive. One of these responsibilities is to guide and shepherd their congregation toward an Acts 1:8 approach toward being witnesses of Christ in “Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” One of the approaches that these church leaders take is to partner together with ministry leaders and organizations throughout the world, offering these dear saints encouragement through prayer and financial support. Many of my international ministry friends are among these who so dearly cherish these support links, who for many of them are the only support that they receive. For them, raising support locally is always hard, and these Western partnerships allow their ministry to go forth to proclaim the Gospel to those in their home country. Let me state clearly that I heartily encourage these types of partnerships. These dear ministry leaders are always more effective in their home country than a Western missionary will be, given that they grew up in their context, know the local church well, are of the same nationality and know the same language as those they are trying to reach with the Gospel. Unfortunately however, I have seen many times in my 30 years of experience in ministry that these types of partnerships are the only types of partnerships that Church leaders have in missions, which then neglects the para-church ministry leaders that are participants and members of their local church. I can speak from experience that there is almost nothing more deflating to these ministry workers than hearing from the pulpit all the exciting ministries the church is participating in internationally with people who do not attend their church, while simultaneously neglecting a partnership of some type with those in ministry and who attend that church. Here’s 3 reasons I think local churches should create some space for partnerships with ministry leaders in their own churches: As I talk to church leaders about this issue, I often advocate for a three-level approach. In addition to partnering with international organizations and partners who are ministering in their local area, I also strongly encourage church leaders to equally partner with congregation members who attend your church and are ministering in either a local or international context through a local organization, in addition to those who feel called to be missionaries overseas and are raised up through your church. Too often, these congregation members in ministry get overlooked but they can provide a wonderful addition to the ministry already being done by the church. Church leaders have a great opportunity as they partner for example with those who are called to minister and live internationally. The idea that ‘this person is one of us and we’re excited about how God is using this person’ is such a powerful example to the congregation of Acts 1:8 lived out in real time. In addition, a person in full-time ministry that attends your church and ministers locally or internationally through an organization is very accessible and can report weekly, if needed, about what God is doing in their ministry. This can be a real benefit to the congregation because they see that God does use people just like them to impact the world for Christ. During a period of my ministry career, for example, I was involved in rural Bible distribution events using Bibles printed in China. 3 or 4 times a year, the pastor would ask me to give a 10-minute report about what God was doing because of the partnership this church had forged with my ministry, and I had so many congregation members tell me what a wonderful encouragement it was to see God working through me, and it encouraged them to get involved in ministry as well. One other benefit here to your local church: As you partner with those who are in your congregation, you’re also showing that your church values the sending and support of missionaries, both at home and abroad. Churches are where faithful missionaries are made! 2. It’s a wonderful encouragement to those in ministry For those people who have been called into full-time ministry, one of the key challenges they face is finding enough people who want to partner with them in prayer and finances. Because this challenge is always ‘front of mind,’ to have their home church say to them ‘You’re one of us, and we want to join you in what God has called you to do,’ it’s such a wonderful encouragement! There are different levels of partnership here, from ‘We support what you do and will mention your ministry on a Sunday’ to ‘come share a few times a year’ to ‘We want to partner with you financially.’ For an elder of a church to say to someone in full-time ministry ‘I know this is a burden you live with, and I want to help carry that burden off you’ is such a powerful way for a church elder to be accomplishing their biblical responsibility of shepherding and overseeing that congregation member, and a powerful way to obey Paul’s admonition in Galatians 6 for us to be bearing “one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

Several weeks ago, as I was perusing around YouTube, a video caught my eye and I clicked on it to see what it was all about. The video showed a man getting pulled over by police for not having a valid license plate on his car. As the police officer approached his window, he asked for the man’s driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance. What happened next was surprising to me. The man stated that he did not consent to the laws of his state and therefore, did not need a valid driver’s license of registration. He stated that he was not driving, but traveling, and therefore had protections under the 14th Amendment of the constitution. I’ve come to learn that this man is part of a growing movement in Western countries called the Sovereign Citizen movement. These Sovereign Citizens believe that the laws of their countries are illegitimate, which therefore allows them to answer only to their own interpretation of the law. This illegitimacy allows them to separate themselves from governmental regulation, including not paying taxes, registering cars, and not having driver’s licenses or other licenses that may be required. By taking this stand, they feel they have the ability to consent or not consent to obedience to the laws of their country and their state. If I’ve piqued your interest in this movement, you should spend some time on YouTube watching some of the videos available… They are actually quite entertaining, if only because the whole movement is so off-kilter. As I’ve been watching these videos and doing a little reading about this movement, it hit me that many of us as Christians have a similar attitude about obedience to God and the Bible as ‘Sovereign Citizens’ have toward the laws of the land. In both situations, we see people who have a higher authority they are called to obey roundly disobeying that authority. In addition, in both cases, we see a group of people who want all the protections and benefits from the higher authority but don’t want to obey the authority and their rules. In the case of us Christians, we have a Bible that serves as our authority as the authoritative Word of God, and yet, like Sovereign Citizens, we often disobey that authority and replace it with our own moral code of what is right and wrong. This moral code has some biblical undertones in it, probably just enough to look somewhat biblical. 1 John is a great book to study in this regard. In Chapter 2, the apostle John writes, “but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected.” John continues this theme in Chapter 5, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” My encouragement to those reading this today as a believer in Jesus: 1. Know the Word of God by reading and studying it. 2. Work on your obedience by simply knowing what God is asking you to do and then do it. We have a nice worksheet here to help you get started. And finally, 3. As you begin obeying the Bible, encourage others to do the same as a normative course of what it means to be a believer in God and in His Son.

Hi All! As most of you know at One Eight Catalyst, we exist to create resources and deliver training that is a catalyst enabling every Christians to find Great Commission fulfillment. Because of our emphasis on the Great Commission, we talk about it a lot. A LOT. During a recent development appointment, a friend of the ministry told us about an article that had been passed along to him that stated that the Great Commission had already been fulfilled, which was a surprise to use given our understanding of Scripture that the Great Commission will not be finished until all ethnic groups (pas ethnos, or πᾶς ἔθνος in Greek) have heard the Gospel and since there are still 7400 people groups that are unreached, there’s still a lot of work to do. The article that was sent to us was long, so we won’t recount every detail here, but I would encourage you to read it to get the full context of this series of posts, of which this is the first of three posts addressing this article. In summary, here are the highlights. In contending that the Great Commission is already finished, the author does so by stating that: Again, I would encourage you to read the entire article. In this series of posts, I’d like to contend with the conclusions made in this article (which I’ll call the GCIC article, for Great Commission is Complete) and offer an encouragement as we look deeply into Scripture. In the next post in this series, we’ll take a look at the Scripture used in the GCIC article and break down in fine detail what we’re actually looking at here.

In the last post in this series, we mentioned an article that was given to us that stated that the Great Commission had already been completed and broke down the highlights of the article. I hope you’ve had an opportunity to read both the first post in this series and the original article itself. As we look closely at the GCIC article, I think there are two questions we have to ask: First, has the Great Commission already be fulfilled and how would we know it? And in order to answer the first question, we have to ask, given the prevalence of the GCIC author’s insistence on writing in his article about the end of the age, ‘What does Jesus mean by ‘the end of the age.’’ It’s an important question because in the GCIC article, the author mentions that since the end of the age was when the temple was destroyed in AD70, this signals that the end of the age has come already and therefore the Great Commission is already complete. As we do a little Bible Study about what the end of the age looks like, there are two places in Scripture that give us an idea of what ‘the end of the age’ looks like. For those wanting to do some additional study, read Matthew 13 and Mark 13 for more context. In summary, here is what is going to happen at ‘the end of the age:’ As we approach ‘the end of the age,’ we’ll see: We will then see the final signs of ‘the end of the age:’ We read about this as well in our favorite passages of Matthew 24. In the GCIC, the author references that Jesus mentions the end of the age will be seen when the Temple is destroyed, which happens in AD70, which according to the author signifies the end of the age. But if you read Matthew 24 carefully, we see a different narrative. The disciples point out the temple to Jesus at the beginning of Matthew 24. Jesus’ reply is “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” (Matthew 24:2) Jesus does indeed prophesy about the destruction of the Temple, which does happen at the hands of the Romans in AD70. But then we get to the key part of this chapter…. Watch this carefully, verse 3: ‘As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”’ Did you catch it? In verse 2, they are leaving the temple area and Jesus makes His comment. We pick back up in verse 3, and Jesus is sitting on the Mount of Olives. For those who have never been to Jerusalem, that’s a 1.8 mile walk (3km) between the two places, which means the comments He makes about the temple, and what happens next happens at a different time, after they’ve walked 3km and they pick back up with the conversation. In the GCIC article, the author states that as an answer to the disciples about their comments about the temple, his answer is ‘the temple will be destroyed and that will tell you the end of the age has come,’ but no that’s not what happens at all. Verses 1 and 2, a conversation about the temple. Verse 3 forward, some time later, a question about what signs will we see at the end of the age and then Jesus answer, after they’ve walked two miles and Jesus is sitting on the Mount of Olives. Conclusion? It is irresponsible of the author of the GCIC article to indicate that ‘So what “age” ends when the Temple that Jesus and his disciples were looking at gets torn down? Put simply, the Old Covenant age. The era marked by the Tabernacle and the Temple comes to a close.’ (From the GCIC article) When Jesus talks about ‘the end of the age’ we see Scripturally both what will come before this end, and what happens at the end of the age. One of the key things we’ll see is when all ethnic groups (pas ethnos, or πᾶς ἔθνος in Greek) have gotten the Gospel to them. In the final post, we’ll put together both the conclusions here and talk about that pesky Colossians 1:23 passage where Paul proclaims that the Gospel ‘has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven.’

This post is the final post of a three-post series on the topic of whether the Great Commission has already been completed, and a response to an article a friend of our ministry sent on this topic, which is found here, which is the article we’ve been using as our example of one line of thought on this topic. One of the problems us Bible teachers have is that many times, we want the Bible to fit our narrative, rather than allowing the Bible to lead us to the place it wants to take us. This happens far too often and it’s one of the key reasons that Hermeneutics, that is the study of the principles of Biblical interpretation are so handy. One of the issues with the GCIC article is that the author does not adhere to the hermeneutical principle that as we assume the Bible is authoritative, we allow Scripture to interpret Scripture. Far too many assumptions are being made in an effort to get to a point. A few key examples: In trying to make the point that the ‘end of the age’ that Jesus mentions in Mark and Matthew 13 is signified by the destruction of the temple in AD70, but clearly as we showed in the last post in this series, that is clearly not the case. The author follows that up by stating, ‘Paul confirms the fulfillment of the Great Commission in Colossians 1:23 by claiming the Gospel “has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven.” That’s a surprising claim for modern readers who mistakenly think Paul is saying every individual got a one-on-one Gospel presentation. But we must integrate it into our theology. The Apostle Paul believed that the Gospel had been heard all around the world.’ (Again, straight from the article) One of my favorite hermeneutical principals is that we must understand the Bible passage we want to interpret grammatically first before we can understand it theologically. Let’s look at Colossians 1:23 in that light and see if we can’t see what Paul is exactly writing about here. In Colossians 1:21-23 Paul states, ‘And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creationunder heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.’ It’s verse 23 we want to focus on for our purposes today, ‘the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creationunder heaven.’ At first glance, we’d automatically say that either Paul was just flat out wrong, or there’s more to the passage since the Gospel, even in the year 2020, some 1958 years after Paul wrote Colossians, we know that there are still thousands of people groups (ἔθνος in Greek) that have not head the Gospel even once. In stating that the Gospel has been proclaimed to all creation under heaven, he is quoting Jesus who stated in Mark 16:15, that we should all ‘“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.’ I contend that if we understand correctly both the grammatical tense and the origin of the quotation Paul is citing we will find that there is no hyperbole here at all. The key phrase to examine here is ‘which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven.’ In the Greek, it’s τοῦ κηρυχθέντος ἐν πάσῃ κτίσει. This is an Aorist passive participial phrase. This type of Aorist participle is notoriously hard to translate because it is one of the most flexible constructions in Koine Greek. This is mainly because there are several ways that the word κηρυξοντος could be translated. It could be ‘preached’ or ‘was preaching’ indicating an ongoing action. When we look at the construction of the Greek sentence here, I propose an alternative translation that brings out both the continual aspect and the passive construction leaving a translation that no longer implies that the preaching work is completed: “This gospel that you heard, the one being preached to all creation under heaven” Final Conclusions We’re thankful for the opportunity to read and examine the GCIC article, and there are a couple of points that we agree with. We agree that Christians cannot ‘speed up’ the second coming of Christ by finishing the task of the Great Commission faster. We read in 1 Thessalonians 5:2 that ‘he day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.’ We also agree with the arbitrary method that some organizations determine how many unreached and unengaged people groups there are. On the other hand, we believe that the Great Commission task has not been completed and believe that any attempt to state that there is a Biblical case that the Great Commission has already been completed just doesn’t hold up under serious examination. Whether we look at Jesus’ statement that the end will come after the Gospel is proclaimed to all people groups, or Paul’s statement that the Gospel is being preached to all creation, we are still in the midst of the ‘pre end of the age’ times, and we will not see it’s fulfillment until all the remaining 7400 people groups that are unreached and/or unengaged have faithful witnesses of the Gospel of Jesus within their midst. We welcome any thoughts, comments or suggestions! Contact us here!

As we venture into 2021, we thought it was important for us as an organization to make sure we knew what we’re talking about when it comes to the Gospel. It’s important for a couple of reasons: First, as we create resources and deliver training enabling every Christian to reach their world, the Gospel should form a baseline for all we do. How better to form that baseline than to define the Gospel in simple terms! Secondly, it’s important because as Christians ourselves, we want everything our personal lives are about to have Gospel implications. We often times here this word ‘Gospel,’ in our churches, but it’s important to understand what it really is. The word literally means ‘good news’ and we see it 93 times in the New Testament. The Greek word is εὐαγγέλιον (euaggelion) and it’s the good news of what God has done through Christ and the way of salvation. The key to understanding why the Gospel is good news is to start with the bad news. In the beginning, God made humans in His image and wanted us to have an intimate relationship with Him. (Genesis 1:26-28). But we sinned and cut ourselves off from Him, creating a huge chasm between us and God. We have all sinned (Rom. 3:23) and the punishment for that sin is death and eternal separation from God. Throughout the Old Testament, we see time and time again man trying on his own to bridge this divide. But a perfect God cannot have an intimate relationship with the sin that so pervades us. There was a law in those days that was given by God in the time of Moses that established that cleansing from sin can only happen through the bloody sacrifice of an innocent life (Hebrews 9:22). Throughout the Old Testament, we see people sacrificing animals as a way to appease God, which worked for a time, but was not a lasting sacrifice. This is where Jesus comes in the story of the Gospel. Having lived a perfect life, He was the lasting sacrifice we needed as He took on Himself the punishment of our sins. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17) God sent His son to be a sacrifice for our sin. Jesus’ death on the cross fulfilled the Law’s righteous requirement (Rom 8:3-4, Hebrews 10:5-10). Many of us think that maybe if we’re ‘good enough’ we can earn our way to heaven, but the Bible is clear that there’s nothing we can do to earn salvation. It is a free gift, given to us by God, not a result of our own work. (Ephesians 2:8-9) Peter states this well in 1 Peter 3:18, ‘For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.’ (see also Romans 5:6-8) Jesus’ sacrifice paid in full the penalty of our sin, and through Christ, we are now fully ‘justified’ to God and can have a right relationship with God through Christ. So how do we receive this gift that God has given us through Christ? We must recognize our sin and our need for Christ and repent of our sins and trust in Christ alone for our forgiveness (Acts 17:30, John 1:12). If we repent of our sins and trust in Christ, we are born again into a new life, an eternal life with God (John 3:16). Our only requirement is that we must accept this gift and believe that Jesus is our Savior, ‘But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.’ (John 1:12) This is why the Gospel is such good news! For those who believe in the name of Jesus, the Bible assures us that we will be with God for eternity. 1 John 5:13 says, ‘I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.’ Jesus Himself gives us a great assurance of our salvation as we believe in Him and surrender our lives to Him: ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.’
