Up until recently, I hate all fur coats, and I can tell you exactly why. I have one of those moms who love to dress their daughters up, and I definitely had my share of little faux fur coats… but honestly, what kid wants to wear that on the playground? As soon as I could make my own fashion choices, the coats were first to go.

With the recent Where the Wild Things Are hype and the fur coats everywhere, I decided that maybe I would give my old friend a second chance. Snagged a little leopard number at Forever 21, and now I never want to take it off. While real fur is lovely and like super soft, the thought of wearing a real leopard is a bit intimidating to me. Maybe if I could actually afford something real, I would change my mind, but for now I think faux is just as fabulous. Having a fur coat in my closet makes me feel so much more glamorous, I think you should try it! And super warm, just in time for winter

Ever thought of wearing your Halloween costume during the day, maybe to work or better yet to a hot first date? No? Well think again, ‘cuss Louis Vuitton has proved to us them Bunny Ears are here to stay. This past Fall 2009 collection every model was topped with Bunny Ears, and simply the stylist Katie Grand was inspired by “a black doe rabbit in the pet shop on the corner.” It took us almost a whole season for people to understand and catch on to this trend..all of a sudden you see celebrities such as Madonna and fashionistas Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen rockin them ears out on the red carpet. Seems like recent editorials cannot get enough of this look as well. Would you rock this look off the runway….on your hot date?
This past week, Kristen bell, along with co-hosts Rachel Bilson and Pete Wentz hosted their first event to launch the new line of special edition organic men’s T-shirts and women’s tanks to benefit education and economic rebuilding in the war-ravaged African nation of Uganda These t-shirt are made with Edun Organic Cotton and grown and harvested in Uganda. The t-shirts will be available in every single Guess store across the country and the best part is that 100% of the sale price goes to the Invisible Children Foundation. The initial idea for this line of shirts sprung from the collaboration of Caroline and Olivia Marciano, daughters of Maurice Marciano, CEO of Guess. These two young women have become some of Invisible Children’s strongest and most involved activists, throwing events, spreading the word about this crisis taking place in Northern Uganda Today.

“Invisible Children.” A rough-cut documentary filmed by three young, Southern Californian native filmmakers that traveled to Africa to search for a story, but instead found a life-changing reality. The three young men was not only highly disturbed by the war taken place in Northern Uganda, specifically the widespread of Uganda’s night commuters and child soldiers, but extremely moved to bring the message and story to all unaware of the injustice happening in this country. What started as a intimate and private screening for close friends and family soon turned into a widespread phenomenon, being viewed by millions all over the world, fervent to do all they can to help the injustice they experienced by watching the documentary. I personally have yet to watch the film, however I’m thinking that I will this weekend =)

Check out invisiblechildren.com and blog.invisiblechildren.com for the latest news regarding the issue and to see how you can contribute to aiding this war-stricken country.

Global sport lifestyle brand PUMA has long been associated with improving the quality of life in Africa and making our world a better place, and it comes as no surprise that this time they’ve teamed up with Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT). MWCT, a non profit organization based in Kenya, supports the promotion of education, conservation, and health services in the Maasai tribal lands of East Africa.

On November 1, the 30 Maasai warriors/members of the Maasai Marathon team will participate in the ING New York City marathon, sporting their original PUMA running gear. As part of the initiative, PUMA will work with the warriors to build consumer awareness and raise money for the cause.

And what about Edward Norton? Besides being a kick-ass actor, he’s a dedicated conservationist and will participate as a member of the Maasai marathon team!

No news of what the actual team outfits will look like, but check out the special edition PUMA/Maasai Marathon Tees, sold in select PUMA Stores and online. Naturally, proceeds from the tee will go to MCWT. So, grab yourself a commemorative tee, pair it with a pair of Alexander McQueen x PUMA track pants, and you’re ready to run with the marathon team! … or maybe just ready to go to the gym, while supporting a great cause

Project Ethos produces events in Los Angeles that showcase indie and mainstream forms of fashion, music, and art in one night, under one roof. New talent? Check. Media exposure? Check. Wild party? Triple check. But the good things don’t stop there!

Check out their sponsors page, and you’ll find some pretty notable sponsors, like Covenant House California, for example Covenant House has been a safe haven for homeless kids for nearly 20 years, opening their doors to many kids who suffered from sexual and physical abuse and providing them with a chance for a brighter future…. and whaddayaknow!

I’m sure you all know by now, but October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a topic that literally hits home with me, as my mom was diagnosed w/ breast cancer just last year. She’s doing wonderfully now, but I will never forget the physical and emotional pain she endured while undergoing chemotherapy. Like most women, my mom always put others in front of herself. As healthy as she was at her age, she never thought “something like this” would happen to her. Unfortunately, cancer doesn’t choose you based on health, merit or rapport. Had we known that this cancer was growing inside of her early on, the surgery & treatment would not have been as damaging as it was.

Thinking pink is more than just an alert to a cause, it truly translates into thinking about your health as a woman. To take the time and check yourself…and to take the action to do something about it. Be open-minded. Have a healthy conversation if you’re concerned with a loved one, or even yourself.

For more information and to take initiative, go to: http://www.nbcam.org/

To support & make a fashionable statement, check out this adorable wallet from Lauren Merkin!

For all those fashionistas out there, you know that the fashion world is always changing to reflect the moment, the “Zeitgeist.” To many, eco-friendly and fashion may not seem like a good fit and fashion-forward enough, but don’t jump to conclusions. Eco-friendly fashion has come a long way since its inception and it is possible to be fashion-forward without compromising style. Believe it or not, “Green fashion” no longer means that we all have to wear hemp sandals and dresses made from plastic grocery bags.

Although we continue to see eco-friendly clothing everywhere in the market today (typically a lot of loungewear), I personally have not encountered a fashion forward line, supporting the green movement, absolutely love until I discovered Linda Loudermilk.

“Eco-fashion extraordinaire Linda Loudermillk is no stranger to TreeHugger — we’ve covered Loudermilk Men, her hand-tailored Luxury-Eco line, her denim collection, and named her one of our Best Sustainable Designers. We first saw her spring 2010 collection at the NOW Showcase in New York, where she told us about her spiritual experience with nature that continues to inspire her collection. The collection does have its share of organic cotton (with no pesticides or heavy mineral dyes, of course) – but she also uses vegan silk for vests; silk charmeuse, lyocell, and a seaweed-based fabric for tops and tunics; bamboo for cuffs, pants and shorts; human hair and hemp in spats (pictured below, middle); organic wool in jackets; and reclaimed French lace in dresses (above). :: Linda Loudermilk“(treehugger).

In a time where reusable shopping bags and tote bags have become a fashion staple sold at our fave stores like F21, do you ever stop to wonder if you’re actually contributing anything by purchasing these bags?! What about a fabulous one like this..

Enter Versace x Art Unites. In collaboration with the Whitney Museum of Art and the Starlight Foundation, the house of Versace has created a collection of canvas totebags that are printed with original artworks from some very special little artists – each drawing was created by a young earthquake survivor from China or a child with a severe illness. Survive a major earthquake and design for Versace?! How many kids can say that about themselves? Lucky!

Buy one of these totes, and you’ll be making a donation to the Starlight Foundation and One Foundation. Help a child and their family, score a Versace bag.. sounds like a sweet deal.

My personal fave is the one with random names of Nintendo characters. Random! but so awesome

We all have tons of clothes piling up in our closets. Admittedly, since the economic decline, I know I’ve indulged in some experimental pieces from Forever21 simply because they’re so cheap! So what to do with all those unwanted (sometimes still tagged) clothes that seemed so shiny only in the store? How about a clothing exchange? Since Buffalo Exchange & Crossroads only take high end pieces and don’t even pay you much in the end, set up a clothing swap with friends! It’s a cheap, easy thrill, and you could score some cute frills!

Here’s a “how-to” from fashionlovespeople:

For the past few years, I’ve gotten together with friends every six months or so for a clothing exchange. Without fail, I always find a few things I love. I’m sure you’re all familiar with the clothing swap concept, and many of you have probably done it before, but I wanted to pass along how we do it… with a little nudge to host your own. It’ll be awesome.
1. Invite people. However many you want. Tell them to bring clothes and accessories they don’t want anymore, and feel free to tempt them with food and drinks.
2. Before the exchange, be sure to clear some space for piles (or, even better, hanger racks) of clothes. The more space the better, because everyone will want to crowd in and see everything. And don’t forget full-length mirrors!!

3. At the exchange, separate everyone’s stuff into categories: shirts, dresses, pants, accessories, etc. If you do this as a group, everyone gets to scope out the selection… which is fun and more fair.
(If you have a smaller group, or a smaller selection of stuff (like, if you asked everyone to bring just five items), there is no need for categories and everything can be arranged together.)
4. Assign everyone a number. This can be done in order of arrival, or by drawing numbers.
5. Then the choosing begins.

Option 1: Focus everyone’s attention on one category at a time, letting everyone choose an item in their numbered order, cycling through the count until everyone has all they want. When/if things get slow, you can let more than one person go at a time. To keep things mixed up (and fair), with each category you begin, start your order with a different number. (#1 starts the first time, #5 starts the second time, etc.)
Option 2: You can have everyone rotate through the categories simultaneously. (Think “classroom stations” from elementary school.) Say you have six categories and 18 people; #1 chooses the category she wants to begin at, #2 chooses hers, etc. Each category would have three people choosing from it at a time. Once selections are finished in each round, each little group rotates to the next category — everyone in one big circular movement. And on and on, until everyone has had their fill.
In either case, after the first few rounds, let people take more than one piece at a time. And, feel free to put a time limit on each round!
6. Once everyone gets what they want in the initial rounds, open it up to a free-for-all. Then bag the leftovers to be donated to a local thrift store or charity.
7. Take home lots of excellent new-to-you clothes. And email me to let me me how it went!
***
There are plenty of other approaches — by price point, with one big pile, with one big hidden pile, with general piles, etc. — but this has worked splendidly for us. Have you hosted or attended one before? How did it go?
