Even if something looks clean, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is clean, and that’s especially true of your bedroom carpet. Apparently, carpet can hold up to one pound of dirt per square foot and still appear clean!

And it’s not just dirt that’s getting trapped in the fibers of your bedroom carpet — it’s also a magnet for hair, dead skin, and other organic matter. Bacteria and dust mites would consider that a feast, which should tell you just how important it is to keep your bedroom carpet clean!

To that end, today I’ll be sharing a few simple tips that will not only help you clean your bedroom carpet, but keep it clean too.

4 Tips for Keeping Your Bedroom Carpet Clean

1. Use a Good Vacuum

In order to get all the hair, dead skin, and dirt out of your carpets, you need to use a good vacuum. But a “good” vacuum doesn’t necessarily have to cost an arm and a leg! The main features you’re looking for are strong suction and a motorized brush roll. Aim to vacuum your bedroom carpet at least once a week, or more often if necessary.

2. Get Your Carpets Cleaned

In addition to vacuuming, it’s also important to get your bedroom carpet professionally cleaned. Most carpet manufacturers recommend getting your carpets steam cleaned about once a year. Not only will this help keep your carpet cleaner, but it will actually help extend its lifespan too.

If hiring a professional isn’t in your budget, you can always do it yourself! You can buy or rent a carpet cleaner machine at many grocery, big box, and home improvement stores. Pair it with your own carpet cleaner solution. The rentals are typically pretty inexpensive, and while the results might not be exactly as good as a professional cleaning, it would still be well worth your time and money!

3. Opt for Hard Floors

The easiest way (by far!) to deal with dirty bedroom carpet is to simply get rid of it! ;-) Replacing carpet with hard floors isn’t an option that would work for everyone, but it’s certainly worth considering!

Hard floors are so much easier to keep clean because dirt and grime stay on the surface. Without carpets, regular sweeping and mopping would be all you need to keep your bedroom floors looking great!

4. Add Some Area Rugs

And finally, the last approach I want to mention for keeping your bedroom carpets cleaner is to add an area rug or two to the room. You can use area rugs on either hard floors or carpets, and they’ll act as a barrier that will help keep dirt from getting ground into the fibers of your carpet.

Once a week or so, you can just toss the rug(s) into your washing machine to clean them (or use this method if they aren’t supposed to be machine-washed.) Your carpets will stay much cleaner if you add area rugs into the mix!

My love affair with curtain clips began when we were moving into our studio space. We were hanging curtains up over all the main floor windows, and I remember someone mentioning that they got annoyed by how difficult it was to open curtains that didn’t have curtain rings. You know, the kind that you slide the curtain rod through? I hadn’t thought much about it, since the windows at my house all have blinds, but I agreed that those kinds of curtains could be a nuisance.

Thread several curtain clips onto a curtain rod or tension rod to create a quick and easy gallery display. Clip up photos, moments, or your kids’ artwork to put them on display, and change them out as often as you like!

3. Maximize Closet Space

Pairing curtain clips with tension rods can work wonders in your closet, too. Clip up hats, clutches, belts, shorts, and even boots! Add one or several more layers of storage space to your closet quickly, without making any permanent adjustments.

4. Organize Your Bathroom

Curtain clips can help add additional storage to a small bathroom. Clip up headbands, brushes, necklaces, and hair ribbons, and hand the curtain clips from Command hooks or a tension rod.

5. Shower Storage

During the summer, the water in your reusable bottle can go from icy cold to lukewarm in a matter of minutes. But there’s a simple way to keep your water colder for much longer!

Before bed, fill your water bottle halfway with water and place it on its side in your freezer. In the morning, just fill the rest of the bottle with water for icy cold water that actually lasts!

2. Better Microwaved Pizza

When you reheat pizza in a microwave, the crust can turn unpleasantly tough. To avoid this, just place a small glass of water in the microwave along side your pizza. The added moisture will help preserve the texture of the crust!

3. iPhone Cursor Hack

Anyone with an iPhone can tell you how annoying it is to edit text after you’ve typed it. Selecting the right spot in the text to place the cursor is so tricky that it’s often easier to just delete it all and start over!

But I recently learned there’s actually a MUCH simpler way to do it—just hold down the space bar! This allows you to move the cursor around freely so you can put it right where you want it.

4. Waterproof Your Canvas Shoes

Canvas sneakers are great for everyday wear, but they don’t do much to keep your feet dry. But you can waterproof your canvas shoes using only a bit of beeswax and a hair dryer!

Spread the beeswax over the outside of your shoes, then use the hair dryer to melt the wax. As the wax becomes more pliable, spread it out in an even layer and remove any excess wax as needed. Once the wax has melted and disappeared, you’re done!

5. Start Fires with Chips

Even when you have a good amount of twigs and kindling to start a campfire, an added boost can help get things started. Have a bag of snack chips nearby? Add a handful to your kindling!

The fat, oil, and additives in snack chips tend to burn up easily. Use them to get enough of a flame going to light your kindling, and you’ll be well on your way to a roaring campfire.

6. Keep Garlic Fresh

Worried about keeping those garlic bulbs fresh long enough to use them? Place them in a lidded container and cover them in coarse salt. The salt will draw enough moisture out of the garlic to help keep it fresh and ready to use!

7. Grater Breadcrumbs

You don’t have to pull out your food processor just to make breadcrumbs! Instead, freeze a piece of bread until it’s solid, then grate it up with your box grater. You’ll have perfect breadcrumbs with less cleanup!

If you’ve spent any time in the makeup or skincare aisle of the store in the past couple of years, then you’ve probably already encountered various brands and forms of micellar water. And if you’re anything like me, you’ve also probably asked yourself, “What the heck is micellar water anyway?” ;-)

But a few weeks ago, I finally gave in and decided to look it up online to get to the bottom of this mysterious liquid. And what I learned about it was enough to convince me to try using it as a makeup remover. I now use micellar water to remove my makeup almost every night, and I am seriously loving it!

So today I thought I could shine some light on micellar water, and give you guys the inside scoop about what this product is, what you can do with it, and which brands you may want to try. What Is Micellar Water?

While micellar water looks and feels just like regular water, it’s packed with cleansing oil molecules called micelles. Micelles attract dirt and other impurities naturally, which helps cleanse your skin without stripping it of its natural oils.

How To Use Micellar Water

To use micellar water, simply apply it to a round cotton pad. Then gently wipe your face with the saturated pad to cleanse the skin.

You can also use it to clean up makeup application mishaps by adding a few drops to a cotton swab!

Many people use micellar water as the first step in a “double cleanse.” In the context of a double cleanse, you would use it as described above to remove your makeup, then you would follow up with another gentle cleanser to remove any lingering impurities.

My steam mop is one of my all-time favorite cleaning tools! I use mine regularly to keep my the tile floor in my kitchen free of sticky messes, splattered food, and paw prints from certain grand-puppies who shall remain nameless (but they know who they are!) ;-)

So whether you already own a steam mop or are considering buying one, this list will ensure you know what not to do with it (and why!)

7 Mistakes to Avoid When Using a Steam Mop

1. Plugging It in Immediately

Don’t plug your steam mop in until you’re ready to start mopping, because they heat up surprisingly fast! To avoid burning yourself, attach the mop pad and fill the water reservoir first, then plug the mop in.

2. Not Sweeping First

At the end of the day, even the most high-end steam mop is still just a mop. It can’t pick up crumbs, dust, hair, and loose dirt, so it’s important to sweep (or vacuum) that stuff up before mopping.

If you don’t, your steam mop will just push the dirt around. You’ll also end up with a dirty mop pad much earlier in the process than you would otherwise!

3. Idling the Mop

When using a steam mop, it’s important to always keep it moving. “Idling” your steam mop can cause a buildup of heat and steam that may do permanent damage to your floor.

If you have to step away for a moment while you’re mopping, just make sure to unplug it first!

4. Filling It with Anything Other Than Water

The majority of steam mops are designed to be used with water alone. Filling the reservoir with other liquids or cleaners may damage your mop, your floors, or both!

5. Using a Dirty Mop Pad

Check your mop pad regularly as you mop to make sure it isn’t getting too dirty. Swap the pad out for a clean one as often necessary!

If your mop pad gets too dirty, it will eventually start pushing dirt around rather than picking it up. I recommend keeping several extra mop pads on hand so you can change them out often!

6. Washing Your Mop Pads with Fabric Softener

Washable mop pads for steam mops are often made of super-absorbent microfiber. And the biggest “no-no” for washing microfiber is using any kind of fabric softener or dryer sheet!

Fabric softener and dryer sheet residue can negatively affect microfiber’s absorbency. Eventually, you’ll end up with a mop pad that repels water instead of soaking it up!

To keep them in good working order, wash your mop pads with detergent only. And add an extra rinse cycle, if possible!

7. Using It on Unsealed Hardwood

Using a steam mop on an unsealed surface like genuine hardwood flooring can cause damage over time. Be sure to follow the care recommendations for your particular flooring type, especially if they recommend avoiding steam-cleaning altogether.

Luckily for us, the floors at the OGT Studio only look like wood. They’re actually laminate, so we steam mop them regularly with no problems!

There’s a simple test you can do at home to determine how well-sealed your floors are. Just drop a bit of water onto the floor, and if it beads up immediately, your floors are sealed and are likely okay to use steam! (If the water spreads or sinks, the seal is either non-existent or needs to be reapplied.)

Those little slips of paper they give you at coat checks, luggage storage, and valet parking are notoriously easy to lose! As soon as you get a claim check slip, snap a quick photo of it.

11. Quicker Quilting

You can use your smartphone’s camera to take the guesswork out of arranging your quilt pieces! Before you start sewing, lay out your pieces in whatever order you like best.

Then just snap a picture of the pieces, and use it as a reference as you start sewing. You’ll know for certain which piece comes next, rather than having to guess!
