<p>At the end of a long day, there’s no better feeling than heading off to hit the hay for a good night’s rest. But if your bedroom is cluttered up with ancient artifacts and “denial piles,” your bedroom may not exactly be a restful retreat that supports healthy sleep habits!</p>

<p>But if your bedroom could use a good <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/11-decluttering-strategies-that-will-save-you-time-and-effort/">decluttering</a>, you’re in luck! Because today I’ll be sharing a list of five items to get rid of in your bedroom. This isn’t an exhaustive list by any means, but removing these unnecessary items will go a long way toward making your nighttime sanctuary a tidier, less cluttered, and more restful place!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="5 Things You Should Get Rid Of In Your Bedroom">5 Things You Should Get Rid of in Your Bedroom</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="1. Old Pillows">1. Old Pillows</h3>

<p>If you manage to get the recommended eight hours of sleep each night, that’s a third of your life you’re spending in bed! So why spend that precious time with resting your head on an old, lumpy, and likely dirty pillow?</p>

<p>Not only do a lot of pillows get lumpy and less comfortable over time, but they also collect dust mites, body oil, and bacteria too! Experts say most pillows have a lifespan of two to seven years, so if you can’t remember the last time you replaced your pillow, it’s safe to say you should do so ASAP!</p>

<p>Any time your pillow isn’t providing enough support or is infringing on your ability to sleep, it’s time to look for a new one. If your pillow is still relatively new but is looking a little dingy, <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/how-to-whiten-yellowed-pillows/">give it a good wash</a> to clean it up.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="2. Nightstand Clutter">2. Nightstand Clutter</h3>

<p>For many of us, it’s hard enough to fall asleep as it is, and lying next to a nightstand that covered in clutter, dust, and debris probably isn’t helping! To make your surroundings more calming, try decluttering the area next to your bed.</p>

<p>Clear out any water glasses, dusty knickknacks, notes, toiletries, and anything else that may have accumulated within arm’s reach. Pare your bedside items down to the essentials, like the book you read before bed, a box of tissues, etc. You’ll likely feel better and notice that a clear space encourages a clear head!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="3. Candles You Never Light">3. Candles You Never Light</h3>

<p>There’s really no reason to keep candles in your bedroom unless you actually use them! Candle wax attracts dust like crazy, so unless you’re lighting those candles from time to time, they’re just serving as glorified dust collectors.</p>

<p>Move your candle(s) to another room where you’ll be more likely to actually use them, or clean them up and pass them along to a candle-loving friend!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="4. Forgotten Items Under Your Bed">4. Forgotten Items Under Your Bed</h3>

<p>While some may actually be utilizing the space under their bed for functional storage (perhaps with the help of <a href="https://jillee.co/0jlffu" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" target="_blank">under-the-bed storage bags</a>), others may not even know what’s lurking under there!</p>

<p>Is it last week’s half eaten pizza? Last season’s knee-high boots? Who knows! Either way, it’s time to investigate and toss out anything that qualifies as trash or something you don’t actually need or use. Better to part with the forgotten items before they start spilling outinto the open!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="5. Reading Material You’ve Already Read (Or Never Will)">5. Reading Material You’ve Already Read (or Never Will)</h3>

<p>If there’s a stack of books and magazines you’ve already read taking up space in your bedroom, find a new place for them. You don’t have to get rid of them entirely, but it makes more sense to keep them on your bookshelf than taking up space in your bedroom!</p>

<p>The same goes for stuff you <em>haven’t</em> read—if you’ve had the same book on your nightstand since 2019 and you’ve never made it past page 10, replace it with something more engaging! There’s no point in giving up your limited nightstand real estate to a book you aren’t that interested in reading.</p>

<p>Once you’ve addressed these five sources of bedroom clutter, you may want to address <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/closet-items-to-get-rid-of/">the closet</a> next! :-)</p>

<p>After going through a fairly intense couponing phase years ago, I eventually lost steam and swore off such time-consuming techniques. These days, I’m much more interested in simple, spreadsheet- and binder-free methods for saving money on groceries, and that’s exactly what you’ll find in this post.</p>

<p><strong>Related:</strong> <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/10-grocery-shopping-tips/" rel="noopener"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">10 Ways to Make Grocery Shopping Less Terrible</span></a></p>

<p>Here, we’ll explore small changes you can make to <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/alternative-sources-for-groceries/">the way you shop</a> to avoid overspending. By correcting these behaviors, you can save money every time you shop, regardless of which store or chain you prefer!</p>

<p>As always, if you have a great money-saving tip that isn’t included here, feel free to share it with us in a comment at the end of this post!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">11 Costly Grocery Shopping Mistakes to Avoid</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/YeYbbMzD-IMG_1661edited.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Never Looking Down</h3>

<p>A lot of people just grab whatever option happens to be at eye-level, but that might mean you&#8217;re missing out on less expensive options on the lower shelves! Many stores purposely place less expensive items below eye-level, so take a few extra seconds to check those lower shelves.</p>

<p><strong>Related:</strong> <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/ways-to-downsize-and-save-money/">10 Practical Ways to Save Money When Times Are Tough</a></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/Ue6YS20g-IMG_4169.jpg" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Making Several Small Trips</h3>

<p>Frequent trips to the store to buy just a few items can actually cost more in the long run, and not just because you’re using more gasoline to get there. Shopping with an abstract goal in mind (like &#8220;get food for the next few days,&#8221; for instance) <a href="https://www.msi.org/?post_type=resources&amp;p=2039" class="rank-math-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">often results in unplanned spending</a>, so making fewer, more goal-oriented trips to the store can help you stick to your budget.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/7bjEQzXv-IMG_1671.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Always Buying the Biggest Size</h3>

<p>It’s important to know that the largest size isn&#8217;t always going to be cheaper! It all depends on the &#8220;unit price,&#8221; so it&#8217;s important to look for it on price tags and compare them closely.</p>

<p>Once in a while, you’ll notice that the smaller item is actually cheaper than the bulk option! Some stores do this on items like cereal and french fries anticipating that shoppers will reach for the larger size by default.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/qThTOkvP-cheese.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Only Looking in One Place</h3>

<p>You can find certain items in multiple locations throughout the store, and the prices may vary between locations. For instance, you can often find cheese in up to four different sections, such as a section for specialty cheeses, alongside the salad toppings, shredded or block cheeses at the deli, and cheese sticks by the lunch meats.</p>

<p>If you’re willing to check a few different places, you can save quite a bit of money!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/jxt5svCE-IMG_1658.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Always Choosing Convenience</h3>

<p>Stores like to display certain items together to make things convenient, but they aren’t always the most cost effective options. For instance, there&#8217;s often a small selection of nuts and candies located in or near the ice cream aisle, but you can find a much larger selection in the baking aisle (along with a more favorable range of prices!)</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/timnnT6P-IMG_1641.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6. Never Checking the Salad Bar</h3>

<p>If you need a specialty food item that you don’t normally use, check the salad bar. You can often find items like olives, artichoke hearts, bacon bits, and other ingredients there, and you can save money by only getting as much as you need.</p>

<p>If your store doesn’t have an extensive salad bar, check near the produce or deli department for their &#8220;made fresh daily&#8221; offerings.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/SHe8Ueru-IMG_8739.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7. Shopping Early in the Day</h3>

<p>If you shop first thing in the morning, you may be missing out on markdowns that may appear later in the day. Check the end caps of the aisles for special prices, along with the meat department and bakery.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/zsSmD9ys-IMG_1677edited.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">8. Failing to Check Receipts</h3>

<p>Incorrect charges happen all the time, so it&#8217;s always a good idea to check your receipt! Common errors include multiple scans, sale prices not being reflected, and coupons not being applied.</p>

<p>Take the time to double-check that everything looks right on your receipt before you leave the store parking lot.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/TYmOWmFS-IMG_1626.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">9. Forgetting Your Reusable Bags</h3>

<p>Don’t forget your reusable shopping bags, because most stores now either charge a few cents for each bag you use, or they offer a small discount for bringing your own. That money can add up over time, so it’s worth the extra little bit of effort!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">10. Shopping for Recipes</h3>

<p>When you shop for a specific recipe, chances are pretty low that those ingredients will happen to be on sale. A better way to save it to check the store website or circular to find out what’s on sale, <em>then</em> plan your meals around the best deals available.</p>

<p>It’s a little bit of extra work to shop this way, but it can save you a significant amount of money!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/07/WkEex5cX-IMG_1653edited.png" alt="Grocery Shopping Mistakes"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">11. Never Looking at Store Apps</h3>

<p>A lot of grocery store chains have an app you can download with additional ways to save money, like digital coupons you can load right onto your customer loyalty card. It only takes a second, and it&#8217;s so much easier than trying to keep track of paper coupons.</p>

<p>Certain stores also offer personalized offers based on your buying habits, so it&#8217;s definitely worth your time to check out your favorite store&#8217;s app!</p>

<p><em>What&#8217;s your best tip for saving money at the grocery store?</em></p>

<p>I’ve been keeping myself busy with spring cleaning over past few weeks, mopping floors, wiping down baseboards, and de-greasing things in the kitchen. Every cleaning project I finish helps my home feel that much more fresh, which I find highly satisfying.</p>

<p>Tackling these common spring cleaning tasks has gotten me thinking about cleaning tasks that might not be so obvious, because I often find they make just as a big a difference in how clean your home feels!</p>

<p>So I decided to put together a list of impactful cleaning tasks that might not occur to you to add to your spring cleaning to-do list. Choose a couple of these to tackle in the coming weeks, and you’ll be amazed at what a difference it makes in getting your home ready for spring and summer fun! :-)</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">9 Easily Overlooked Cleaning Projects to Add to Your To-Do List</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="931" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83165" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/T55mXRmO-closet.jpg" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83165" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/T55mXRmO-closet-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/T55mXRmO-closet-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/T55mXRmO-closet-600x750.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/T55mXRmO-closet.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Entryway Closet</h3>

<p>Several months of removing and returning wet clothes and shoes from your entryway closet has likely left it in quite a state, so this is a good opportunity to give it a good cleaning! Pull everything out and vacuum up all the dirt out of the corners, and maybe even add an <a href="https://jillee.co/kh35o5" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">over-the-door pocket organizer</span></a> to keep things tidy! Your closet will feel refreshed, and you’ll be sitting pretty for the next few months.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="931" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83171" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/PSMbeVfu-IMG_3287.jpg" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83171" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/PSMbeVfu-IMG_3287-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/PSMbeVfu-IMG_3287-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/PSMbeVfu-IMG_3287-600x750.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/PSMbeVfu-IMG_3287.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Toolbox</h3>

<p>There are always things to fix up and repair during the spring and summer seasons, and you can set your self up for success by making sure your toolbox is clean! Vacuum it out, and toss out any junk that found its way in there. You’ll be organized and ready to tackle any project that comes your way.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="490" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83166" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/alfko6a0-craft-room.jpg" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83166" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/alfko6a0-craft-room-300x197.jpg 300w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/alfko6a0-craft-room-532x350.jpg 532w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/alfko6a0-craft-room-353x231.jpg 353w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/alfko6a0-craft-room-370x244.jpg 370w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/alfko6a0-craft-room-600x395.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/alfko6a0-craft-room.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Craft Supplies</h3>

<p>Wherever you keep your craft supplies, take a minute to assess the situation. Vacuum up any loose glitter, recycle any paper scraps, and tidy it up a bit. You’ll thank yourself for doing it the next time you’re ready to start a new project!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="931" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83172" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/BMtwFBwf-IMG_5436-2.jpg" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83172" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/BMtwFBwf-IMG_5436-2-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/BMtwFBwf-IMG_5436-2-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/BMtwFBwf-IMG_5436-2-600x750.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/BMtwFBwf-IMG_5436-2.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Throw Pillows &amp; Throw Blankets</h3>

<p>Check out the labels on your throw pillows and throw blankets, and <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/how-to-clean-throw-pillows/">wash them accordingly</a>. A lot of throw pillow covers can be removed and tossed right into your washing machine! Freshening up your pillows and blankets will go a long way towards making your space feel clean, fresh, and inviting!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="499" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83167" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/1PdOsSFO-DSC_0159.jpg" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83167" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/1PdOsSFO-DSC_0159-300x201.jpg 300w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/1PdOsSFO-DSC_0159-523x350.jpg 523w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/1PdOsSFO-DSC_0159.jpg 745w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/1PdOsSFO-DSC_0159-600x402.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/1PdOsSFO-DSC_0159-260x174.jpg 260w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Ceiling Fans</h3>

<p>Before you need to start using your ceiling fans to keep your house cool, give them a good cleaning. That way you won’t be showered in dust when you turn them on! And as a bonus, your ceiling fan blades are actually one of the quickest and easiest things to clean. That is, if you know my fan blade cleaning secret! ;-) Check it out at the link below.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="497" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83173" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/hKSROJAJ-IMG_7338.png" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83173" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/hKSROJAJ-IMG_7338-300x200.png 300w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/hKSROJAJ-IMG_7338-525x350.png 525w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/hKSROJAJ-IMG_7338.png 745w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/hKSROJAJ-IMG_7338-600x400.png 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/hKSROJAJ-IMG_7338-260x174.png 260w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6. Fridge Drawers</h3>

<p>Just by virtue of being at the bottom of your fridge, fridge drawers tend to get really dirty! Pull them out of the fridge and give them a good wash in soapy water. (If your sink isn’t big enough, you can always do it in your bathtub!) You’ll feel much better about storing your farmer’s market produce in a clean drawer.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="931" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83168" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/d0BIzAbm-DSC_0287.jpg" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83168" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/d0BIzAbm-DSC_0287-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/d0BIzAbm-DSC_0287-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/d0BIzAbm-DSC_0287-600x750.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/d0BIzAbm-DSC_0287.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7. Luggage</h3>

<p>Get your luggage ready for your upcoming summer trips! Pull your bags and suitcases out of the closet and wipe down the outside with a wet cloth. Make sure to check out the inside too! Empty any lingering junk out of the pockets, and spot clean any messes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="490" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83174" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/8nRhHKaY-pet-toys.jpg" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83174" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/8nRhHKaY-pet-toys-300x197.jpg 300w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/8nRhHKaY-pet-toys-532x350.jpg 532w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/8nRhHKaY-pet-toys-353x231.jpg 353w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/8nRhHKaY-pet-toys-370x244.jpg 370w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/8nRhHKaY-pet-toys-600x395.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/8nRhHKaY-pet-toys.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">8. Pet Toys &amp; Bedding</h3>

<p>For pet owners, &#8220;spring cleaning&#8221; often involves a lot of pet hair removal! Springtime shedding means all your pet’s stuff could probably use a good cleaning. Wash your pet’s bed and bedding if possible, and toss any cloth toys in the wash.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="931" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/overlooked-spring-cleaning-projects/?tp_image_id=83178" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/REQVxMZu-IMG_6112.jpg" alt="Places You Wouldn’t Think To Spring Clean" class="wp-image-83178" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/REQVxMZu-IMG_6112-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/REQVxMZu-IMG_6112-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/REQVxMZu-IMG_6112-600x750.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2018/04/REQVxMZu-IMG_6112.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">9. Outdoor Garbage Cans</h3>

<p>It’s a good idea to wash out your outdoor garbage cans every once in a while. It helps keep lingering odors from becoming a problem! Drag your empty garbage can out onto the lawn, and pour a good amount of vinegar and a squirt of <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/dish-soap-donts/">dish soap</a> into the bottom. Use your <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/10-brilliant-ways-to-repurpose-your-old-garden-hose/">garden hose</a> to &#8220;pressure wash&#8221; the interior of the can. Then pour out the soapy water and give it a good rinse. Much better!</p>

<p><em>Is there a spring cleaning project you tend to overlook?</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="*What Is The 80/20 Rule?*">What the 80/20 Rule Can Teach Us About Housekeeping</h2>

<p>The story goes that one day, Italian philosopher and economist <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/kevinkruse/2016/03/07/80-20-rule/?sh=765480fd3814" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vilfredo Pareto</a> noticed that 20% of the pea plants in his garden generated 80% of the healthy pea pods. He observed something similar while studying production in a number of different industries: 80% of production overall came from around 20% of the companies.</p>

<p>The 80/20 rule is a generalization of Pareto&#8217;s observations, that <em>80% of results come from just 20% of the action.</em></p>

<p>So what does that have to do with household chores? Well, the 80/20 rule can help us maximize the results of the effort we put in around the house, helping us get more done in less time. By identifying the tasks that have the biggest impact and addressing those first, we can keep our homes clean without toiling for hours!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="How Does The 80/20 Rule Apply To Homekeeping?">Applying the 80/20 Rule to Cleaning Up Around the House</h2>

<p>If you&#8217;ve ever tried to speed-clean your home, you&#8217;ve probably noticed you can actually accomplish quite a lot in just 10-15 minutes. Having a time limit forces you to accept that you won’t be able to complete 100% of any task, which allows you to focus on doing &#8220;good enough&#8221; work in the time you have.</p>

<p>When I’m particularly short on time, reminding myself of the 80/20 rule helps me use the time I do have wisely. When you use this approach, you might be surprised how much of an impact you can make with relatively little effort!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="A Note On Minimalism">A Note on Minimalism &amp; Other Variations of the Rule</h3>

<p>There are many ways to interpret and apply the 80/20 rule. The Minimalist interpretation claims that 80% of the time, we only use around 20% of our possessions. The implication is that we all own a lot of stuff we rarely use, and that getting rid of those items will <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/11-decluttering-strategies-that-will-save-you-time-and-effort/">declutter</a> our homes and simplify our lives.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s an interesting thought, and certainly one worth thinking about (especially considering it&#8217;s a pretty spot-on assessment of how I utilize my purse collection). There are plenty of other variations on and interpretations of the 80/20 rule, so feel free to use any that are helpful to you!</p>

<p>Have you ever pulled your laundry out of the dryer, caught a whiff of those artificial fragrances, and wondered, &#8220;What exactly am I putting on my clothes?&#8221; You&#8217;re not alone.</p>

<p>As someone who&#8217;s spent years testing and researching household solutions, I&#8217;ve discovered that many popular laundry products are hiding a dirty secret: they&#8217;re packed with synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin and trigger allergies in many people.</p>

<p>But here&#8217;s the good news: You don&#8217;t have to choose between fresh-smelling laundry and your health. Today, I&#8217;m sharing my favorite methods for getting naturally fresh-smelling laundry—solutions I&#8217;ve personally tested and trust.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Hidden Problems With Common Laundry Fresheners</h2>

<p>Before we dive into the solutions, let&#8217;s talk about why you might want to reconsider your current laundry routine:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dryer Sheets</h3>

<p>These seemingly innocent sheets can contain synthetic fragrances that trigger allergies and skin irritation. They also leave a waxy coating on your laundry that can make towels less absorbent and may increase fire risk in dryers by building up on lint screens and reducing airflow.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Scent Boosters</h3>

<p>While they smell amazing, these little beads are packed with artificial fragrances that can cause headaches and skin reactions.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Scented Detergents and Fabric Softeners</h3>

<p>That &#8220;fresh cotton&#8221; smell often comes from undisclosed chemical ingredients—companies aren&#8217;t required to list what&#8217;s in their &#8220;fragrance&#8221; blend. These products can cause skin irritation and leave a residue that makes clothes less breathable.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">My Favorite Natural Solution: The Perfect Laundry Duo</h2>

<p>After years of testing different methods, I&#8217;ve found that the combination of <a href="https://byjillee.shop/sv7m47" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>wool dryer balls and pure essential oils</strong></a> is the most effective way to get naturally fresh-smelling laundry. Here&#8217;s why:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Gentle on Skin</strong>: No synthetic fragrances or harsh chemicals</li>

<li><strong>Actually Works</strong>: Helps clothes dry faster and reduces static naturally</li>

<li><strong>Customizable Scent</strong>: You control the strength of the fragrance</li>

<li><strong>Cost-Effective</strong>: Reusable dryer balls last for years</li>

<li><strong>Better for Laundry</strong>: No waxy residue or coating</li>
</ul>

<p><em>“I have a new dryer, and the lint filter has been a nightmare that has to be cleaned every week with hot water and Dawn. A friend told me the buildup was from dryer sheets. I got these wool balls and stopped using the dryer sheets, and I no longer have the gummy buildup. I’m sold.”</em> &#8211; Susan A.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Which Essential Oils Should I Use?</h3>

<p>I&#8217;m admittedly a little biased, but I love using my <a href="https://byjillee.shop/vhp8th" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Freshly Washed Essential Oil Blend</a>! This bright, citrusy blend of sweet orange, tangerine, lime, pink grapefruit, bergamot, and spearmint was specifically formulated to give laundry that clean, fresh-air scent. It&#8217;s like capturing the smell of clothes dried in sunshine but without any artificial fragrances!</p>

<p><em>&#8220;I am very pleased with the Freshly Washed Essential Oil Blend. I have been using it with the dryer balls, and my family really likes the clean scent of our laundry now. Several of us have very sensitive skin, which makes softening products a very itchy problem. The dryer balls and the Freshly Washed oil blend have been an answer to our laundry issues.&#8221;</em> &#8211; Diane F.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t have <a href="https://byjillee.shop/vhp8th" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Freshly Washed</a> on hand? Here are some other great options:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong><a href="https://byjillee.shop/jfc4jn" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Simple Clean Essential Oil Blend</a></strong>: Another favorite from my shop, this blend of lemon, cedarwood, lemongrass, and other purifying oils adds a crisp, clean scent to laundry.</li>

<li><strong><a href="https://byjillee.shop/k5da8k" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Single Essential Oils</a></strong>: Looking for something simple? Try lavender (calming), lemon (fresh), or sweet orange (uplifting) &#8211; all available in my shop.</li>

<li><strong>DIY Alternatives</strong>: Have other essential oils at home? Try oils like eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint, or any citrus oils. These naturally fresh scents work great for laundry. You can use them alone or create your own blend!</li>

<li>Toss the balls into the dryer with your laundry and dry as usual.</li>
</ol>

<p><em>&#8220;I love how my laundry feels and smells now. The scent is fresh and natural, not overpowering like store-bought products. My sensitive-skin family members haven&#8217;t had any reactions!&#8221; &#8211; </em>Linda B.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Want a Stronger, Longer-Lasting Scent?</h3>

<p>Because <a href="https://byjillee.shop/vhp8th" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Freshly Washed</a> is made with pure essential oils, its scent is naturally lighter than synthetic fragrances. If you’d like a stronger, longer-lasting aroma, try these simple tricks!</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Let it absorb first</strong>: Allow the oil to soak into the dryer balls for 1-2 minutes before tossing them in.</li>

<li><strong>Adjust the amount</strong>: Use 2-3 drops per dryer ball for a light scent. Increase to 5-6 drops for a stronger aroma, but don’t overdo it to avoid oil stains.</li>

<li><strong>Apply at the right time</strong>: For a scent that lingers, add <a href="https://byjillee.shop/vhp8th" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Freshly Washed</a> to your dryer balls during the last 10-15 minutes of the cool-down cycle.</li>

<li><strong>Try a cool-air boost</strong>: Dry your laundry as usual, then apply essential oil to your dryer balls, toss them in with the dry clothes, and run a 5-10 minute cool-air cycle to help the scent cling to fabrics.</li>

<li><strong>Store for freshness</strong>: Keep unused infused dryer balls in a sealed container or bag between laundry cycles to help retain the scent.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">More Natural Options for Fresh-Smelling Laundry</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Add Freshly Washed to Your Washer</h3>

<p>Add 4-5 drops of <a href="https://byjillee.shop/vhp8th" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Freshly Washed</a> to your unscented liquid laundry detergent before adding it to the washer. Run your wash cycle as usual. This method lightly scents fabrics without leaving residue behind.</p>

<p><strong>Pro Tip:</strong> If using powdered detergent, mix the oil with a tablespoon of baking soda before adding it to the drum to help distribute the scent more evenly.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Make a Scented Vinegar Rinse</h3>

<p>Mix 30 drops of <a href="https://byjillee.shop/vhp8th" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Freshly Washed</a> with 4 cups of white vinegar in a bottle. Shake well before each use, then add 3/4 – 1 cup to your washer&#8217;s final rinse cycle. This natural fabric softener both deodorizes and freshens your laundry.</p>

<p><strong>Pro Tip:</strong> Store your scented vinegar in a glass container, as essential oils can break down plastic over time.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. DIY Fabric Softener Crystals</h3>

<p>Mix four cups of Epsom salts with 40 drops of <a href="https://byjillee.shop/vhp8th" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Freshly Washed</a> in a large bowl and stir to mix. Transfer to an airtight container for storage. Add 1/4 cup per load along with your regular detergent. This recipe makes enough for about 16 loads of laundry.</p>

<p><strong>Pro Tip:</strong> Need more or less? Use 10 drops of Freshly Washed per 1 cup of salt.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Coffee Filter &#8220;Dryer Sheets&#8221;</h3>

<p>Dampen a coffee filter with a bit of white vinegar and add 3-4 drops of <a href="https://byjillee.shop/vhp8th" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Freshly Washed</a>. Toss in the dryer with your clothes, and they&#8217;ll come out static-free and fresh-smelling.</p>

<p>Having a great cooking <i>method</i> up your sleeve is typically much more versatile than having one great recipe. You can use one cooking method to cook all sorts of different things, so the possibilities are endless!</p>

<p>Today I want to sing the praises of one of my personal favorite cooking methods: oven roasting. Not only is it dead simple, but it also produces consistently delicious results!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="491" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/bundt-pan-roast-chicken/?tp_image_id=106498" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/xnqTK5nZ-roasted-chicken-15.jpg" alt="roasted chicken" class="wp-image-106498" style="width:798px;height:auto" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/xnqTK5nZ-roasted-chicken-15-300x198.jpg 300w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/xnqTK5nZ-roasted-chicken-15-531x350.jpg 531w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/xnqTK5nZ-roasted-chicken-15-370x244.jpg 370w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/xnqTK5nZ-roasted-chicken-15-600x395.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/xnqTK5nZ-roasted-chicken-15.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<p>To demonstrate the versatility of oven roasting, today I want to share a simple method for making <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/15-ideas-that-will-make-you-love-your-bundt-pan-again/">bundt pan</a> roast chicken. While it might <i>look</i> a little strange, this method produces crispy-skinned yet juicy chicken, plus roasted veggies basted in savory chicken drippings.</p>

<p>This easy roast chicken makes a great meal any night of the week! You can also leave the veggies and potatoes out if you want to <a href="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/secret-to-shredded-chicken-in-seconds/">shred the chicken</a> and use it for a different recipe. (Like I said, the possibilities are endless!)</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="497" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/bundt-pan-roast-chicken/?tp_image_id=106494" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/YzCpaTSy-roasted-chicken-1.jpg" alt="roasted chicken" class="wp-image-106494" style="width:798px;height:auto" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/YzCpaTSy-roasted-chicken-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/YzCpaTSy-roasted-chicken-1-525x350.jpg 525w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/YzCpaTSy-roasted-chicken-1.jpg 745w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/YzCpaTSy-roasted-chicken-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/YzCpaTSy-roasted-chicken-1-260x174.jpg 260w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Make Perfect Bundt Pan Roast Chicken</h2>

<p><i>Ingredients:</i></p>

<p>1 whole chicken (about 5-6 pounds)<br>4 carrots, peeled<br>1 onion<br>1 lemon<br>10-15 petite red potatoes<br>4 sprigs fresh thyme<br>2 bay leaves<br>2 Tbsp olive oil<br>Salt and pepper, to taste</p>

<p><i>Directions:</i></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1 &#8211; Prep</h3>

<p>Start by removing the giblets or anything else from the inside of the chicken, then season the interior of the bird with salt and pepper. Set the chicken aside for now.</p>

<p>Next, use a sharp knife to cut the carrots and onion into large chunks (about 1-2” in size). Cut the lemon into quarters.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="931" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/bundt-pan-roast-chicken/?tp_image_id=106495" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/owYYIefJ-roasted-chicken-2.jpg" alt="roasted chicken" class="wp-image-106495" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/owYYIefJ-roasted-chicken-2-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/owYYIefJ-roasted-chicken-2-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/owYYIefJ-roasted-chicken-2-600x750.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/owYYIefJ-roasted-chicken-2.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2 &#8211; Fill</h3>

<p>Add the carrot pieces, onion pieces, quartered lemon, red potatoes, thyme sprigs, and bay leaves to a <a href="https://jillee.co/nzmstk" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" target="_blank">bundt pan</a>. Drizzle olive oil, salt, and pepper over the top and toss until everything is evenly coated.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="491" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/bundt-pan-roast-chicken/?tp_image_id=106499" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/2wMxMxHn-roasted-chicken-16.jpg" alt="roasted chicken" class="wp-image-106499" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/2wMxMxHn-roasted-chicken-16-300x198.jpg 300w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/2wMxMxHn-roasted-chicken-16-531x350.jpg 531w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/2wMxMxHn-roasted-chicken-16-370x244.jpg 370w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/2wMxMxHn-roasted-chicken-16-600x395.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/2wMxMxHn-roasted-chicken-16.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<p>Next, cover the hole in the center of the bundt pan with a piece of tin foil. Then position the chicken so that cavity rests over the hole and the chicken is in a sturdy, upright position. Rub olive oil over the outside of the chicken, and season it well with salt and pepper.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="931" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/bundt-pan-roast-chicken/?tp_image_id=106503" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/nVWwYvWO-roasted-chicken-6.jpg" alt="roasted chicken" class="wp-image-106503" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/nVWwYvWO-roasted-chicken-6-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/nVWwYvWO-roasted-chicken-6-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/nVWwYvWO-roasted-chicken-6-600x750.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/nVWwYvWO-roasted-chicken-6.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3 &#8211; Cook</h3>

<p>Place the bundt pan in your oven and bake at 400°F for 15 minutes per pound of chicken until cooked through. (My chicken was just over 6 pounds, so I cooked it for 1 hour 45 minutes.)</p>

<p>Keep an eye on the chicken while it cooks to make sure the skin doesn’t overcook. If it looks like it’s getting a bit dark in places, just cover the crispy parts with some tin foil to keep it from going over.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="931" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/bundt-pan-roast-chicken/?tp_image_id=106505" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/LNsXtBhn-roasted-chicken-10.jpg" alt="roasted chicken" class="wp-image-106505" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/LNsXtBhn-roasted-chicken-10-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/LNsXtBhn-roasted-chicken-10-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/LNsXtBhn-roasted-chicken-10-600x750.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/LNsXtBhn-roasted-chicken-10.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<p>When the chicken is done cooking (or the internal temperature reaches 160°F), let it rest at room temperature for 15 minutes before carving into it.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="745" height="930" data-pin-nopin="nopin" data-pin-url="https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/bundt-pan-roast-chicken/?tp_image_id=106497" src="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/6e7IfTbW-roasted-chicken-9.jpg" alt="roasted chicken" class="wp-image-106497" srcset="https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/6e7IfTbW-roasted-chicken-9-240x300.jpg 240w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/6e7IfTbW-roasted-chicken-9-280x350.jpg 280w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/6e7IfTbW-roasted-chicken-9-600x749.jpg 600w, https://assets.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2019/10/6e7IfTbW-roasted-chicken-9.jpg 745w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bonus Step &#8211; Make Gravy!</h3>

<p>Make a simple roux of flour and butter (or cornstarch and butter to make it gluten free). Add the roux to the drippings from the bottom of the bundt pan and whisk until thickened.</p>

<p>Pour your lemon-y chicken gravy liberally over your bundt pan roast chicken and veggies. Yum!</p>

<p><i>Roasting may be my favorite cooking method, but what’s yours?</i></p>
