It's been quite some time since I've featured an artist here. Recently I met Shiri (on-line that is) from an ecological village in Israel, who is a wonderfully warm and peace-filled artist with amazing talent. Her Esty shop, Be Wonder, is full of colorful, lively hand painted peace items, including beautiful mandalas and card games!

Shiri was sixteen during the Gulf War and had a brother, sister and father in the army at the time. She can still recall hearing when bombs fell on Israel.

In her words:

"I think anyone who experienced war in any way knows how bad it is! In my life, from the very beginning, I sing and pray for peace. My mum got pregnant with me after the Six-Day War, thinking that I will be born into a war free reality - same with all mothers and there are many songs about the 1974 born kids and the promise that couldn't be fulfilled.

I traveled the world wishing to become an international PEACE WARRIOR! But the path showed me that there is no way to run from your roots. So I tried to show people I have met the other face of Israel, the side that is not shown on media and most of the people were amazed to hear my stories.

Painting and crafting for me is a deep liberating feeling of inner peace, and being on Etsy, touching (again) people from all walks of life through my art, is an overwhelming experience and a strong affirmation that my deep intentions are being passed on."

Christmas in Haifa

Santa was walking the streets of the Wadi Nisnas in Haifa, Israel, during the Festival of Festivals on the 24th December, leading several marching bands playing Christmas music. Lots of food and trinkets lined the streets, as well as some amazing art. A photo gallery below. Merry Christmas to all, wherever you are in the world.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of a walking tour of the "Old City" of Jerusalem. It was a fascinating, interesting and beautiful place to spend the day. I was awestruck knowing this area is the birthplace of at least three major religions! Below are a few of my favorite photos.

Peace Card in eight languages by Be Wonder of Western Galilee, Israel

I've learned there is a festival, close to my neighborhood, that celebrates three of the major religious December holidays! Chanuka, Christmas and Eid al-Adha.

It's called the Festival of Festivals, and takes place in Haifa's mixed Arab-Jewish Wadi Nisnas neighborhood. The festival promotes good neighborly relations by hosting cultural and artistic events throughout December.

I hope to have an opportunity to learn more about this wonderful celebration and enjoy the fabulous Israeli art that I know is being displayed!

Poppy Seed Bread

This recipe for Poppy Seed Bread is one of my fondest memories of my grandmother's baking and the best quick bread I've ever eaten! It may not be the healthiest, which is why I only bake it once a year or so. I treat it like a dessert. You may dress it up by drizzling a sugar icing over the top of the loaf or add fresh strawberries to the plate when serving.

I have reduced the amount of sugar quite a bit from the original recipe. Everything else remains the same. I haven't tried it yet, but it occurred to me that the oil could be reduced and the same amount of liquid replaced by increasing the milk. It might be worth an experiment.

This bread makes a wonderful gift, and in this case I gave several loaves to friends before I left for Israel. Makes two loaves.

Poppy Seed Bread

In a large bowl cream together (using a hand mixer):

3 eggs

1 1/2 C. sugar

1 1/2 C. oil (I use olive oil)

In another bowl sift together:

3 C. unbleached flour (could try half whole wheat pastry flour)

1 1/2 t. salt

1 1/2 t. baking powder

1 1/2 t. poppy seeds

Add the dry mix to the creamed mixture alternately with 1 1/2 C. milk.

Lastly stir in:

1 1/2 t. almond flavoring

1 1/2 t. vanilla flavoring

Divide batter into two greased and floured loaf pans. Bake in a 350 oven for almost one hour. Check for doneness by poking the center with a toothpick. Cool completely on wire rack before slicing or wrapping.

A while back I gave some peace rocks to my grand children so they could spread the message of peace. That was in Colorado. Now they live in Seattle, Washington, and sent this photo of their peace rocks, which they placed at a park in West Seattle, near the Puget Sound.

Spirit of Place: Life is Change by Metamorphis Arts of Iowa, USA

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity, since learning of my upcoming move to Israel to serve at the Baha'i World Centre. My large furniture items are sold and all electronics except my laptop have been given away, thanks to Craig's List and Freecycle! My house is under contract and scheduled to close in two weeks.

That will leave me without a home for the remaining six weeks until my departure for Israel, so I will stay with one of my sisters, which is great, as I will be near other family members as well. I can spend quality time with parents and siblings, as well as friends, and prepare a bit more for a new lifestyle in another part of the world.

Choosing to "shake" things up and leave the familiar behind has put me on a new path of self discovery that is just beginning. It has been interesting to watch myself going through this process so far. The challenge of letting go; reflecting on personal relationships; gaining a new understanding of what's important to me; and what lies ahead waiting to be discovered.

Although I will miss my family and friends dearly, specially my adult children and their families, it feels like the right move at the right time. So with the loving support of my children, family and friends, a new chapter awaits just around the corner!

moving to Israel

Baha'i Hidden Words mail art postcard by Victoria O'Neill of Pennsylvania, USA

A new chapter in my life begins this fall when I move to Haifa, Israel for two and a half years, to serve at the Baha'i World Centre. I will have the bounty of living near the Holy Shrines of the Baha'i Faith and to interact with people from around the globe, who carry out the work of Baha'u'llah's message for peace and unity for mankind.

It is a big move, but I'm mentally ready for it. I embrace this change as another step in my personal spiritual growth. How can I not, after all, as Israel is the Holy Land to many faiths!

I hope to continue my blog on some level, although lately it's been quite neglected, with preparations to move and selling most of my belongings. My posts may also change and evolve based on my new home in Israel.

My Etsy shops will be on hiatus for the duration of my stay. I will be taking a small jewelry work box, as well as paint and paper arts so I can continue to create.

I look forward to sharing many new experiences and friendships, along with photos and artwork.

birds, bunnies and ...... oh my!

I woke up this morning, very early, and realized it's been ages since I've taken time to walk out and about in nature. And too long since I've posted about a hike. I grabbed my camera and water and drove over to Garden of the Gods (a well known destination for tourists) which is about ten miles west, give or take. The sun was just coming up, which is why the rocks are such a vibrant orange in the photos below. These photos have very little retouching. Just a bit of fine tuning for sharpness. The colors are as I saw them, or the camera I should say :-)

It felt so good to smell the pine trees after a short rainfall last night. The birds were busy chattering and chipmunks scampered around doing whatever they do. I found bunnies sitting here and there completely oblivious to me.

Western Scrub Jay

The Western Scrub Jay is much more common here than it's counterpart, the Eastern Blue Jay. If they happen to be in the same area, there may be some territorial issues to be worked out.

Along the path I've just missed a deer that vanished in the scrub. I'd love a photo, so I decided to wait a bit to see if he might come back. While standing there, I turn around to take this shot of the rocks. (below) The sun has risen a bit higher by this time. And yes, the sky is really that blue!

As soon as I turn back around I can hear rustling in the scrub (or bushes) and I'm thinking my waiting has paid off. I hadn't been standing there very long. I raise the camera, ready for a shot, expecting to see a cute deer or two, when my breath stops as a bear comes out of the brush, slowly lumbering down the trail aside of me. After my initial shock, not to mention frozen in place, the bear turns his head and sees me. Click goes my camera.

Now I'm scared. I have encountered bears twice before, but in my own yard where I was able to step back into the relative safety of my home. I realize the only thing separating me from the bear is the dirt and a few pieces of lumber, as in the photo. And I'm alone. I couldn't remember the "bear rules" ... do I stay and not move, or run, or do I wave my hands to act like I'm the bigger creature.

Well, one doesn't move, but stands their ground. At the time I just wanted to leave as soon as possible. I stopped looking at him directly and slowly walked back down the path and as soon as I felt it was okay, I ran.

My walk was cut short, as I didn't feel comfortable continuing. I hadn't seen many people during my walk, so I headed for the car and took one last picture of the rocks on my way out of the park.

Balanced Rock. Tourists usually swarm this area for photos of family standing on top. I've seen childhood pictures of myself with my brother and sisters on this rock

spinach and tofu quiche: for the meatless monday crowd!

Spinach and Tofu Quiche

I'm not a huge fan of tofu, but this is one dish I've stuck by for many years. Even my kids enjoyed it, though they didn't know they were eating tofu! I confessed years later.

I've had this recipe for so long I don't remember where I found it. It's been altered over the years to the current version. What's great about this dish is the flexibility to use cheeses you may have on hand, or even replace the spinach with chopped broccoli or chard. For the crust I've used a recipe from "The Joy of Cooking" and replaced some of the white flour with whole wheat pastry flour. I've also used shortening that does not have hydrogenated oils. You may want to prep the tofu and spinach beforehand.

SPINACH AND TOFU QUICHE

Mix in a large bowl:

4 T. cornstarch

1 C. cold water

Blend in a blender:

2 eggs

1 C. lowfat cottage cheese

1/3 C. feta cheese

1 box soft tofu-DRAINED WELL

I wrap the tofu (out of the package) in paper towels and set a large can on top to help squeeze the water out. After blending, add this mix to the cornstarch bowl, and fold in the following:

1 10 ounce box of frozen spinach, cooked and drained well, or use fresh

1 C. shredded cheddar cheese,or a blend of jack, etc

1 small onion, chopped

Dash of nutmeg and black pepper

Pour into an unbaked pie shell. If you are using a small pie shell, this filling may stretch to TWO shells. It does not rise during baking. Bake about 45 minutes to one hour. Done when toothpick comes out clean and the top is slightly brown around edges. Don't over-bake, it may dry out.

Nice sides might be roasted carrots and green salad. Freezes well too. Enjoy :-)
