Looking for an affordable weekend getaway that’s perfect for singles, couples, or families with young children? If so, I’ve got a destination you need to check out! My husband, daughter, and I recently spent three days in Amelia Island, Florida… and I can safely say that it’s a whole vibe. Not familiar with Amelia Island, Florida? Same here! Truthfully, I had never even heard of the place until the tourism board reached out to say they would love to host us. We didn’t hesitate to say yes because, despite many visits to the Sunshine State– I even rented a place in Miami Beach for a month earlier this year– my Florida travels rarely take me farther north than Orlando. This is likely the case for you, too, so let me introduce you to Amelia Island, Florida. Named after Princess Amelia of England, Amelia Island is located in the northern part of the state and is only a 40 minute drive from Jacksonville (which, fun fact, is named after former US president Andrew Jackson). Known for its nature, wildlife, sand dunes, and 13 miles of beautiful beaches, the island is for people from all walks of life looking for a relaxed, […]

This post was written in partnership with Capital One, but all opinions are mine. It goes without saying that the last year has been an absolute rollercoaster thanks to a certain global pandemic that I shall not name. Besides the obvious health and safety concerns that arose as a result of coronavirus, as someone who loves to travel and explore new destinations, I experienced a massive identity shift as I spent most of 2020 at home. Despite this, I turned lemons into lemonade, and used this time to *truly* get to know New York City, the place I’ve called home for the past five years. As soon as it was safe to do so, I was out and about: traversing different boroughs and new neighborhoods, spending loads of time outside, and coordinating socially-distanced meetups with friends. Thankfully, this ensured there were fun moments in what was a very challenging year. With that said, there’s nobody more excited than me right now– not only is summer just around the corner, New York City is set to fully reopen in the coming weeks and months! I thus can’t wait to do ALL OF THE THINGS that I used to enjoy in what […]

This post was written in partnership with Lysol, but all thoughts are my own. With COVID-19 still in our midst, the decision to travel is one that many people are weighing heavily. And as a travel content creator with a public platform, I get a lot of questions not only about whether it’s safe to travel, but also where to travel and how to travel there more safely. So, in this post I’m sharing my tips, tricks and things to consider if you decide to travel during this strange time. A note on travel and safety Let’s start off by addressing the biggest elephant in the room: whether it’s safe to travel at all. This is one of the most frequently asked questions I get from my readers, and a valid one. However, this is a tricky question to answer for a few reasons. Firstly, one year into the pandemic, we all have different experiences and comfort levels when it comes to navigating life with the virus. This means that our individual capacity to court and mitigate risk is a very personal thing. Second, the answer to whether or not it’s safe to travel during this time will vary widely […]

Though travel has looked very different for most of us the last year, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t take the time to explore, discover, and/or relax in a new place. I was reminded of this when I did a weekend staycation in Palm Beach, a mere 90-minute drive from Miami (where we briefly relocated at the end of 2020). While the towns of Palm Beach and West Palm Beach certainly have their charms, the most of our weekend was spent at the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, which invited us for a 3-day stay in January. And to be honest, our stay couldn’t have come at a better time. It goes without saying that 2020 was an exceptionally tough year for all of us for myriad reasons. Covid-19, as well as the subsequent losses, lockdowns, and dips in the economy, made this a year of sadness and a year of strife. But the very fact that I’m writing this blog post in 2021, with both my health and my wits intact, represents a year of survival. A getaway at Eau was the perfect way to celebrate. Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa is a luxury property with loads […]

2020. Whew! It goes without saying that this year falls into a category all on its own, with so many of us being affected in unimaginable ways. However, while 2020 brought challenges of many different types, a new year with a fresh start is fast approaching (and we couldn’t be more relieved). With that said, after the New Year’s celebrations conclude, many people will be thinking about the same thing – money, and how to manage it better. So, instead of counting the days ‘til we bid farewell to 2020, let’s be proactive and plan for a better year ahead. After all, one of the many things that we’ve been reminded of this year is the importance of being financially prepared! That’s precisely why I’ve partnered with You Need A Budget, a personal budgeting program, to share four important tips for how to get your finances in order in new year– regardless of how much money you have in the bank. 4 Major Tips for Starting a Budget for the Upcoming Year 1. Review the Past Year This is one of the best places to start. Set some time aside to go through your statements and understand every little thing […]

A trip to Maine in the fall? Yes, please! One lobster cruise, a historical lighthouse, and an abundance of colorful fall foliage later, I can confidently check Maine off my list knowing that I experienced it just how any traveler should. For, not only does the Pine Tree State have so much to offer its visitors, it’s been working hard to ensure it remains a safe and healthy travel destination despite Covid-19. After a weekend of exploring and experiencing all the “Maine” attractions (pun totally intended), I can safely say that a trip up there is not to be missed. While taking in the immense beauty of Maine in the company of my family was incredible in its own right, perhaps the best and most unique thing about this trip was that you, my dear readers, got to plan my itinerary. Dubbed the “This or That” program by Visit Maine, you effectively got to “choose my adventure”—what I ate, the places I visited, and the things I did were all up to you! This is the first time that I’ve done such a thing in all my travels and if I’m completely honest, I loved it! Letting you vote on which activities I got to try meant that you got to […]

“I’m curious: just how do you make money running a travel blog?” is one of the questions that I get the most when I tell people what I do. And to be honest, I’m not surprised — making money online as a digital nomad of sorts is still a foreign concept to many people, especially those who work a desk job in a “conventional” industry. But the answer to their query isn’t that short or simple. For starters, as someone who derives the vast majority of their income from working online, I’ve developed many different revenue streams. For instance, I freelance and write for various travel publications, I partner with different travel and lifestyle brands to promote their products and services on social media, and even sell my photography to clients big and small. I also work as a digital host and correspondent for networks like Travel Channel, get revenue from the videos I post on Youtube, and sometimes even make money when you purchase a product or service I’ve recommended on my blog (this is known as affiliate marketing). As travel bloggers and online content creators, we’re always looking for ways to monetize our content, and affiliate marketing is […]

Dune-bashing in Dubai. Hiking to Machu Picchu in Peru. Marveling at the Taj Mahal in India. Going on a safari in South Africa. While it sounds like an excerpt from a brochure, these are just a handful of the experiences I’ve been able to check off my personal bucket list for travel. Hi, my name is Oneika and in a typical year, I eat, sleep, and breathe travel. There’s something about being somewhere new, seeing something different, and learning about different customs, cultures, and traditions that just… gets me. But if you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you’ll also know that I’ve shifted my focus to bucket list trips and experiences. I mean, in my mind, if I’m getting on a plane, train, or automobile I might as well go big before I go home, amirite?! Practically, this means that I didn’t just visit Victoria Falls, I low-key swam in it (and bungee jumped off the Victoria Falls Bridge, but that’s a story for another day). I’ve also slept in a yurt in the Mongolian steppe, ziplined through Costa Rican rainforest, and done high tea too many times to count in London. However, while these bucket list adventures […]

What comes to mind when you hear the word travel? If you’re like me, you probably think of dusting off the ol’ passport and hopping on a plane headed to a distant, faraway land. However, while Covid-19 has put a damper on most of our big travel plans this year, there’s absolutely no reason we can’t explore destinations closer to home! While we often think we have to travel far and wide for a bit of adventure, there’s so much to see and do in our own backyards. That’s also why, especially with travel restrictions in place and the tourism industry taking a major hit around the world, there’s never been a more important time to seek out and support local businesses in the places we can visit. This global health pandemic has also resulted in an economic pandemic greatly affecting the small businesses that give our cities and towns life. This is why we all need to take part in each other’s survival: by exploring and supporting our local economy. Luckily, thanks to Hotwire, I was able to do a bit of both when I recently booked a weekend getaway to Philadelphia. Despite living in nearby New York City, […]

Why do you like to travel? The reasons are multi-faceted for me: I travel to discover new places, meet new people, and learn new things about myself. Traveling also helps me break away from the monotony of the daily grind, giving me that taste of the unknown and unexpected I so crave and desire. Travel is also a teacher: it teaches me to be more empathetic, more tolerant, and more cognizant of the fact that there is so much more to life than my own little community. This is why I’m such a huge proponent of travel and encourage everyone to do it as much as they can. Even in a time like now when travel is somewhat restricted, I encourage people to explore their own cities and towns as long as it is safe to do so. Travel doesn’t have to mean getting on a plane or driving for many hours to your destination. This is why I love Hotwire: they are a company that is passionate about bringing you the best of the best when it comes to travel. They are all about sharing tips and knowledge and offering deep discounts so you can take not just more, […]

Only four weeks until we ring in 2020, can you believe it? Moreover, can you believe that we’re approaching a new DECADE? This year has galloped along at a stallion’s pace and I can barely catch my breath. While 2019 was a year for the books in terms of travels, partnerships and the slaying of personal and professional goals, 2020 is already shaping up to be a year like no other. Why, you ask? Well, in addition to a MAJOR life transition I have on the horizon (if you follow me on social media you already know, and if not, stay tuned for a HUGE update), I’m also happy to announce that I’m going to be 2020 Chief Travel Guide for Alamo Rent a Car for a third year running! I’ve always maintained that travel represents empowerment, education and exploration for me, and this ethos is only strengthened by the ability to navigate the world around me in my own car. That’s why I vibe so much with Alamo– their rental cars are available all over the country and give me the freedom I need to hit the road at my own schedule, rhythm and pace.
