Well, it was exactly three months ago that I shared the fact that this blog had reached the 100,000 spam mark according to the spam fighting plugin Akismet. But it looks like in the last 24 hours the count has crept up above the 175,000 mark.

76,000 spam comments in 90 days is just a little out of hand, don’t you think? So, this is why I heavily moderate comments and delete anything that looks spammy. You would have thought that maybe they would simply go elsewhere since it’s not getting through. But instead they just keep increasing.

This is a great little short of the film which lasts about 5 minutes and which was eventually turned into the actual full length version. For it’s day the special effects were very impressive, especially given the fact that it was almost entirely created by one guy without the help of any major studio.

The very ironic thing about the full length version of the movie is that it is about a guy who is trying to produce a movie but who is getting messed around by other people in the film industry - while in real life, one of the other people working on this movie with him was actually selling the rights to the film without his knowledge or consent!

It just so happens that it is about brand building. I highly recommend you check it out if you work. It really doesn’t matter what your role is, every job in a company contributes to the brand, so this can only help.

Oh, and by the way. Pay attention to the fact that you don’t need a narrator to go through this presentation. You can just click and read. This works very well for a presentation that you intend to distribute to people.

If you intend to deliver a presentation in person you can make it just as simple as this, but trim it down to 1/4 the number of slide by taking out the ones with hardly anything on them and actually speaking that part.

Here is a question that is going to rile some people up.

So, there is a site that wrote an article titled “The Best Places to Get Quality Backlinks” that lists sites for people to leave comments on for the sole purpose of increasing their Google PageRank since they get to leave a link back to their site.

Guess which site is at the top of the list? Yeah. This one.

So, when I get comments from people who come directly from that site I think of them as disingenuous and completely discount their validity. I mean, I spend time to write articles for those of you who really enjoy the same general stuff as me.

Now, if ANYONE leaves a comment - no matter how brilliant - which contains a spammy link, I delete it as fast as possible. So the question is why should I treat bullshit comments any differently? Shouldn’t I just can them as well?

PS - How do I know when they arrive? Woopra.

Last Tuesday I was in Chicago, and all was going well until a seemingly unlikely event started a chain reaction that would lay me up in bed for nearly three days… It rained.

Yep. It didn’t rain very hard, or very long, but it just so happened that I was walking about a mile or so through the city back to my hotel during the light rain. I could have caught a cab, but instead I ducked into a Walgreen’s and got a baseball hat and kept walking.

I know what you’re thinking. But no, I didn’t catch a cold!

I was taking my time, even stopping to snap photos of skyscrapers in the rain, when about halfway back to the hotel I started having difficulty catching my breath. Now I don’t have asthma, and I can generally out walk anyone I know, so it took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on. I was having an allergic reaction to something.

Pollution Ruins the Day

By the time I got to my hotel room my throat was already starting to burn, my nose was running, and my breathing was constricted. I took a drug cocktail consisting of Zyrtec-D, Flonase and Advair (for the first time in weeks) and went to sleep.

When I awoke on Wednesday after a restless night of sleep, I discovered that my throat was on fire, I was still having trouble breathing, and I’d almost completely lost my voice. Oh, and this was right before I had to deliver my Cloud Computing lecture at HostingCon. So, I dosed up on meds again, and started out my day.

To cut a long story short, I was sick for days and I’m 100% certain that it was caused by the rain stirring up the pollution all over the city. My evidence, in addition to personally being a walking allergic test subject, was the fact that three other people who had been out and about with me at the same time experienced similar symptoms! And none of them even have allergies!

Too Many Coincidences

So, on Thursday I’m on the airplane heading for home and I’m reading the July/August issue of Dwell magazine in which they are explaining that concrete production accounts for 8% of the CO2 emissions on the planet. They also go on to dedicate much of the issue to methods of “green” architecture, and to call for designers to incorporate every manner of technology into projects to be Earth friendly.

On Friday, while I’m laid up in bed, I pull out the May Men’s Health magazine (which I’ve had for months but haven’t had time to read) and I catch an article called “Where the Bugs Are” that points out all the places to expect nasty contaminants in public places which will make you sick.

Then, when I get around to checking my e-mail later in the day there is a message from Cathy Zoi of The We Campaign offering me to take a little environmental quiz to see how much I know about how bad we’re wrecking our planet. Oh, and pointing out that Exxon just broke the all time record for quarterly profits.

After the quiz I stopped to watch Al Gore’s highlights reel from a speech he gave a little while back about his recent “challenge” for America to convert to 100% clean electricity production in 10 years. I hadn’t really bothered watching till now, because I figure we could never pull this off anyway, but I have to admit that every time I watch him speak Gore impresses me.

So, What’s The Point?

Well, the point of all this is that I was thinking… it’s not just that the oil producing countries have the rest of us by the family jewels, the fact that we are digging up every fossil fuel resource we can find and burning it to create energy pumps so much crap into the air that it literally makes us sick! My experience in Chicago last week was a brutal example of the effects of this pollution.

So, my question is, why the hell don’t we actually take this challenge of Gore’s? I just don’t see any serious drawbacks! But I can think of a few potential benefits:

Clean up our air! Frankly, I don’t care about saving money. I’ve got plenty of that. And I don’t have kids to worry about leaving anything to. But I do place a premium on breathing.

Make a boatload of cash! If American’s build clean air technologies, the rest of the world will buy them from us! After WWII we got rich selling technology to the rest of the world that no longer had it. This is the same thing, but without all the mess associated with blood, guts and war.

Simplify our world! Electric powered machinery is far simpler, quieter and cleaner. Even electric cars have 1/4 the parts in them. So we can be more efficient with resources while reaping the benefits of a quieter environment.

If there is one thing I agree with VP Gore about it’s this: we simply lack the political will to do it. It’s not a technological problem, we’ve already got that. It’s a determination problem. And you know what? Until everyone begins to experience breathing problems like me, we’re never going to fix it. There is just not enough pain… yet.

Wow. I speculated about getting ready for $5 per gallon gas here in the US a few weeks ago, but when you read that the oil companies are breaking the record for most profit in a single quarter - ever! For any company! Ever! It kind of makes you pissed off.

The New York Times reported today that Exxon’s Second Quarter Earnings Set a Record:

HOUSTON — Exxon Mobil reported the best quarterly profit ever for a corporation on Thursday, beating its own record, but investors sold off shares as oil and natural gas prices resumed their recent decline.

Record earnings for Exxon, the world’s largest publicly traded oil company, have become routine as the surge of oil prices in recent years has filled its coffers. The company’s income for the second quarter rose 14 percent, to $11.68 billion, compared to the same period a year ago. That beat the previous record of $11.66 billion set by Exxon in the last three months of 2007.

Exxon’s profits were nearly $90,000 a minute over the quarter, but it was less than Wall Street had expected. Exxon’s shares fell 4.6 percent, to close at $80.43. (The company calculates that it pays $274,000 a minute in taxes and spends $884,000 a minute to run the business.)

Of course, as the oil companies would point out, their profit margins are actually pretty slim as a percentage of revenue, the absurd profits are merely a result of volume. Still, I’m going to have a really hard time feeling sympathy for them.

Seems to me that they could be spending a more significant portion of profits to develop higher margin, clean energy alternatives to help us actually try and clean up our planet. If they were, perhaps the shareholders wouldn’t be handing them a 5% beating for actually having the highest profit margins of all time.

I bet you read the title of this post and expected to see some guy from the NBA pull a Michael Jordan and deliver a 10 foot dunk or something. Wrong! It’s a Japanese guy!

Now, I can’t be sure, but I swear this guy is one of the regular contestants on the Ninja Warrior show I watch all the time. If I recall, I think he’s even a Gold medal Olympian gymnast or something.

Anyway he takes about a 20 foot dive off of a freaking trampoline and as he goes hurdling head first towards the basketball hoop he actually slams one home! Of course, the landing doesn’t look very comfortable to me… but I guess it was worth it.

I’ve loved these guys, in an extremely manly sort of way, ever since they put out the mother’s day video that reminded me of my dear childhood.

When asked about the interview Luke said, “We have never done this before in our lives. Hopefully it doesn’t show.” And when asked how he thought the interview was going Colin said, “Shocking behavior. You should be ashamed. I hope your mommy’s not going to watch this. Is your mommy going to watch this?”

Today I’ve been asked to attend an event designed to provide mentoring to young people. The format of the event puts me at a table with 2-3 people for 20 minute sessions to answer questions and dish out advice.

It got me thinking… what do I wish I had known before I started my career? My first thought was… everything! But that’s not really true. Some of the fun in life is the journey. Without the ups and downs we wouldn’t be the people we are today. Still, there are a lot of things that would have been useful to know.

So, I decided to jot down a few ideas based on my own experience. Some items from this list are things I wish I had known, and some are things I wish other people would have known. By all means, I hope you’ll add to the list if you think of something I missed.

Listening is the most important tool in the business arsenal. Before you give your opinion, ask others for their opinion first. If you’re going to agree it makes it easy. If you’re going to disagree you’ll know before they do and be able to change your delivery to “sell” your idea to others. And when you ask a question, be patient as you wait for an answer. Knowledge is power and your goal should be to get as much as you can while giving out only what is absolutely necessary.

Patience is a prerequisite to success. Everyone is looking for the quick buck, but no one wants to earn it. Heck, I understand. I wish for the same thing too! But it just doesn’t work that way. If you’re going to be successful you are going to have to resign yourself to the fact that it’s going to take hard work, and a lot of it!

40 hours a week won’t make you rich. Think about it. You can’t expect to work the same hours as 95% of the population, but somehow be in the top 1% of incomes. If your main goal is financial in nature you are going to have to really work in the same general percentage of the bell curve as you want to be rewarded.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. The only thing that matters in a business setting is how much a person contributes to the overall cause. It doesn’t matter how they look, or if they boast about how great they are. The only thing that counts at the end of the day is if they are continuing to move the business forward.

Whoever said “I didn’t learn anything useful in school” was an idiot. It’s true, you can’t learn everything in school, some things only come with experience. But believe me, you are going to have to learn everything, so get yourself a huge head start by learning it early and you’ll leapfrog all the other people who are sitting around wondering “why do I need to know this”?

Whiny, angry people are destined for failure. If you have a bad temper, or if you find yourself complaining a lot, you need to work on that. No one in a work environment wants to see either of those things. You have to be calm, cool and collected to solve problems, and problem solving is what business is all about. Don’t even bother pointing out problems unless you plan on being part of the solution.

Work harder than anyone around you. Arrive earlier, take shorter lunch breaks, and leave late. Not only will you get more actual work done than your peers, the folks in charge will love you and consider you for advancement.

Keep your personal and work life separate. You need to be friendly at work, but never, never forget it’s a competitive environment. Tell people you have problems at home and everyone will soon think, “it’s affecting your work”. Tell people things are going great and they’ll think, “its affecting your work”. You need to craft your work image carefully, and protect it like your reputation counts on it! Oh, and don’t drink. Getting drunk around people you work with is a recipe for disaster.

Take calculated risks. Risk, generally speaking, is a bad thing. Calculated risks however, can leapfrog a career. A calculated risk is one you feel has been thoroughly investigated, has a reasonable chance of success, and most importantly leaves you with viable options in case of failure. I’ve seen too many people take huge risks and fail because they simply lack the patience to wait for the success that comes from hard work.

Don’t be so certain you’re right. Every day I see people assert things they know to be “true” only to be proven wrong. The world is not black and white, so keep your ego in check and constantly challenge your own assumptions. Do the research to back up your opinions, but remember that the research could be flawed. Don’t be afraid to try things, but don’t be too proud to admit when it doesn’t work.

I’ve got some seriously successful folks who read this blog, so even if you’ve never left a comment, now’s a good time! Got anything to add to the list? It’s for the kids!

That was a long title for this post. Possibly my longest ever. But you know what? This one deserves it. Now, the emotional part of me that really loves Tommy Boy wanted to call this the worst Microsoft commercial ever. But clearly it isn’t worse than the current reigning gem. Still, it is a travesty of justice.

To make matters worse, this one doesn’t just star some terribly bad actors. It actually has Microsoft executives in it - including CEO Steve Balmer! So, go ahead and check it out. And may God have mercy on their souls.

Well, it seems that the company, and the CEO, behind them is being bent over by the courts.

The parent company of Enzyte has been been found guilty, and the CEO faces up to 20 years in prison.

Judge Spiegel maintained that Warshak and other chief executives engaged in fraud, money laundering and deceptively promoted bogus claims about the product’s effectiveness. The fraud was so widespread that it “tainted almost every dollar the company earned during its most profitable years” so federal prosecutors believe the company should have to give up almost all of its revenue.

For those of you who don’t live in the US, or haven’t seen these commercials, here is a sample - featuring “Smiling Bob”, the company spokesman.

Now a lot of people confuse this term and here is my way of clarifying the matter. The way I look at it, I can’t even figure out my taxes, so what chance do I have of figuring out which universal belief system I should subscribe to?

I actually have a theory that accountancy helps people select their religion.

If you are happy with a more nature centered life and pay taxes in grain/produce or the profit from selling such, then paganism may be the religion for you.

If you are more in the commodities market and find solace in diversified highly portable wealth then Judaism is just for you.

Eventually this system has had to expand as people found new and more inventive ways of being at peace.

People that liked portable wealth and commodities, but didn’t like all of that saving up became Baptists.

People who liked the commodity aspect of Judaism, but only for a year get to be Mormons.

Then there are people who have otherworldly ideas of money and they are called Scientologists.

I figure this is why I am agnostic, it’s because I just can’t figure out my taxes!

Perhaps that is why it’s already been viewed over 27 million times!

I will say that once you start watching it, it’s hard to stop. The cinematography is actually pretty engaging, there are hot chicks, and the rest is kind of like watching a train wreck. Have fun.

Sure, I pull out Office Space a lot, but I still have to keep coming back to the well with Tommy Boy quotes.

So, for those of you who haven’t seen it (may God have mercy on your soul) I’ve assembled the best stuff I could find from the movie right here for your viewing pleasure. And for those of you who have seen it, did you eat a lot of paint chips as a kid?

First lets start with the trailer:

Then, not so much here… or here…

Here is an incredible one hour educational video, called The Moment in Time: The Manhattan Project, created by the University of California which documents the history that led to the development of the bomb.

By the way, here is a little description of that photo I’ve attached:

At the time this photo was made, smoke billowed 20,000 feet above Hiroshima while smoke from the burst of the first atomic bomb had spread over 10,000 feet on the target at the base of the rising column.

Of course, she was only able to get away with it for about a weeks worth of journeys before the police caught on to her “routine” and put an end to it. I can only say that this must have been a very unpopular move with the men on the train who most likely found the morning ride to be stimulating.

Anyway, one weeks worth of entertaining people was all it took to put this lady in the global spotlight. So she’ll probably get her own reality TV show now or something.
