The Washington Nationals "Take Back The Park " Campaign & Their Blatant Disregard For Charitable Organizations

Don't patronize the Washington Nationals they CLEARLY are a team that has lost its heart. After months of organizing a charity event to benefit a foundation (that was created in memory of a sibling); the foundation was informed that the previously promised (and documented) group rate purchase would no longer be made available to the foundation.

Instead, the Washington Nationals launched a “Take Back The Park” bias campaign to boost their teams ego and morale; limiting ticket purchases to local residents through March 8 (when the tickets would be released to the general public.) After viewing the press release, the foundation contacted the group sales office. We received a voicemail message the following day ensuring that the campaign wouldn't affect our event. After continued communication with the group sales executive, the foundation was informed [3 weeks later] that no exceptions were being made. They would NOT be honoring their previous commitment to the foundation.

These last minute changes will result in a significant financial loss for the foundation (a non-refundable deposit had already been made on a chartered bus for the event.) Additionally, it will generate a distrust and skepticism for the foundation when holding future events. The Washington Nationals Executive Office offered no compensation, or even an apology. Instead I received a phone call earlier today stating that they had YET AGAIN changed their minds and are extending the limit on ticket sales to local residents, through April (instead of the previous stated date of March 8.) This clearly seems to be a "play as they go, make up the rules as they go" campaign.

In trying to boost morale, you’ve failed miserably. From a business standpoint, your team is limiting its revenue and profit margin. Were the powers that be in the Washington Nationals business office blissfully absent in Business 101? You'll need that money to purchase better players. The way to boost morale is to BUILD A BETTER TEAM, not RAILROAD CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS by drawing lines in the sand WHERE THERE SHOULD BE NONE. This is all a desperate attempt to garner attention from the media and general public. Sadly, you clearly have no concept (or care) for what WE DO in trying to keep the memory of our loved one alive.

Unfortunately this foundation isn't the only one that will lose from this team's haphazard decisions and disregard; there
were apparently several others with events planned for these dates as well.

SHAME ON YOU WASHINGTON NATIONALS - IT IS MY HOPE THAT THE MLB WILL EXAMINE THIS ORDEAL CLOSELY AND MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF YOU; TO ENSURE THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS TO BE ON THE RECEIVING END OF YOUR IGNORANCE.

Disney's Lady and the Tramp Diamond Edition - The Classic Story of Friendship & Love is Available Now on Blu-ray & DVD

Lady and the Tramp, the classic beloved story of friendship and love, has been released from the Disney vault just in time for Valentine's Day. As the 15th animated film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, Lady and the Tramp took several year's to complete (released to theaters June 22, 1955.) Disney began story development in 1937 after Disney story creator Joe Grant introduced a concept based on his own pooch (a Springer Spaniel named Lady) to Walt Disney. Though the story evolved over the years prior to it's completion and release, various scenes in the film mimic the real life milestones of it's creators. The opening scene where Lady is gifted to "Darling" on Christmas morning, was based on the gift of a Chow puppy (presented in a hat box) that Walt Disney gave his wife Lilly.

The popular television series, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (airs weekday's on Disney Junior- check your local listings), has released a brand new collection of episodes to DVD, titled "I Heart Minnie"! This fun compilation of upbeat episodes focuses on Friendship, love, and Minnie Mouse! The 5 episodes included in this new release are seasonally themed.

Kid's will enjoy these interactive episodes in which Daisy and Minnie work to make their flower's bloom (perfect for Spring..it's just around the corner now!), Mickey and friends plan a celebration in honor of Minnie's Birthday, Daisy prepares for an energetic performance in the talent show, Daisy seeks to adopt the perfect pet to love and care for (super cute, the kids loved the adorable elephant in this episode), and follow the rainbow as Minnie and friends discover a valuable life lesson.

Each episode encourages interaction from the kid's, prompting them to respond to different questions throughout (as do all episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse); each episode also delivers a valuable lesson.

With the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday, we found this fun release was he perfect theme for a get together. Our "I heart Minnie DVD screening party" was filled with good food, great company, fun crafts (see below for free printable crafts & Valentines), and adorable treat bags that were enjoyed by all!

What would a party be without a sweet treat, right? The kids and I had a ball making Minnie themed cupcakes for our screening party (pictured below.) Though I had made "brownie bottom" cupcakes using Red Velvet cake in the past (always a big hit in our home!) I wanted to try something different, so we went with Strawberry Cupcakes with a Brownie bottom and Strawberry Buttercream Icing (pictured below). Great combination! They were absolutely delicious! (See below for the recipe.)

Strawberry Cupcakes With A Brownie Bottom & Strawberry Buttercream Icing

(yields 18-24 cupcakes)

Strawberry Cake

Ingredients

2 cups white sugar
1 (3 ounce) package strawberry flavored gelatin
1 cup butter, softened
4 eggs (room temperature)
2 3/4 cups sifted cake flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup whole milk, room temperature
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup strawberry puree made from frozen sweetened strawberries

Directions: In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and dry strawberry gelatin until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Combine the flour and baking powder; stir into the batter alternately with the milk. Blend in vanilla and strawberry puree. Set batter aside, and go on to mix Brownie batter.

"Best Brownies Ever!"
Ingredients

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions: In a medium bowl, mix together the oil, sugar, and vanilla. Beat in eggs. Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt; gradually stir into the egg mixture until well blended.

Spoon brownie batter into the bottom half of each cupcake pan (using cupcake baking cups), spoon strawberry cake batter on top half (baking cups should be three quarters full). Bake at 350 degrees (F) for 30 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool and top with Strawberry Buttercream Frosting (recipe below).

Strawberry Buttercream Frosting
Ingredients

1 cup butter, softened
2 (16-ounce) packages powdered sugar, sifted
1 cup pureed fresh (or frozen) strawberries

Directions: Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer 20 seconds or until fluffy. Add powdered sugar and chopped strawberries, beating at low speed until creamy. (Add more sugar if frosting is too thin, or add strawberries if too thick.)

Real Steel : An Action Packed Film With Heart!

When sitting down to Real Steel with the family last week, I was definitely prepared for an action packed experience. What I wasn't prepared for (but was pleasantly surprised by) was the heart warming storyline.

Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is an ex-fighter at the end of his rope financially. His last-ditch efforts to re-coupe financially leave him with a broken Robot, and no new prospects on the horizon. Just as he has hit rock bottom, Charlie's life takes yet another unexpected turn when he's granted custody of his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo); following the passing of his mother.

Though reluctant, the two team up to build and train a championship contender and form an inevitable bond in the process.

The visual graphics in this film are absolutely stunning (see the "Making of the Bots" video below), and the included bonus features showcase some interesting details on how the Robot's were made.

Meet The Bots Of Real Steel:

Ambush is a low-rent circuit bot. The best fight that Charlie can arrange for Ambush is literally against a piece of livestock.

Atom may not be in the biggest or the flashiest bot in the ring, but he is the most extraordinary. He is the "hero" robot.

Colored in gold and red, Midas sports a mohawk. He's a brawler. He follows no rules. He'll use whatever means necessary to win a fight.

Since when did the niche of review blogging become so over the top ridiculous? Contest entrants trying to win several of the same item to sell on Ebay/Amazon? Cheating on Entry Forms?

When did Blogger's start feeling the need to keep up with the Jones', and have a constant stream of "reader giveaways"? It wasn't like this when I started blogging - at all.

Yes, I'm all for a couple, maybe even a few giveaways a month - but it has swelled to something that is clearly out of control. When did folks stop reading blogs, to well, just read blogs?

Blogger's purchasing (yep, literally BUYING Twitter, Facebook, GFC Follower's) (or"Stumbling" SU) their way to the top?! This has gotten OUT OF CONTROL - It's like #MeanGirls except it's real life .... and we are NOT IN HIGH SCHOOL!

Don't get me wrong, I have
met some awesome mom's since I started blogging! There are many truly amazing mom blogger's that are good people, and great at what they do.

But then there's also this whole other side of thing's that is literally overshadowing everything else that's good (great even) about this community.

This is turning into a #SocialMedia #EpicFail in the #Momblogging Community (all in my humble opinion of course).

So, WOW, it has been an interesting couple of day's. I've received an onslaught of emails and comments addressing the topic that I addressed in this post (some good, some less than tactful, but I'm glad that it has opened a conversation.)

Because I'm unable to respond to each and every email / comment, but I feel a response is necessary:

As I stated in the beginning of the above vlog, this is completely out of character. However, this is a topic that needs to be addressed (in my opinion.)

With that being said, yes, I did vlog about a trend in the sector of review blogging that has the potential to change the sector on a whole.

If some would like to take this opportunity to blame my observation (yes, in the form of a vlog) as the reason that all PR professionals refer to mom’s who blog as “mommy blogger’s” (which I’m totally fine with by the way….I’m a mother and a blogger; and proud of both roles) fine.

BUT, here’s the thing …

Review blogging stands on the principles of word of mouth marketing. Word of mouth marketing is based wholly on trust, and the trust of an individuals opinions and honesty.

When blogger’s (again, specifically review blogger’s) start inserting various shades of grey to the way that the community operates (i.e. dishonestly pushing numbers) the whole point is lost. The entire concept will ignite skepticism, ultimately diluting what many of us do honestly.

In any area of business, there is a definite need to maintain a certain level of integrity and transparency. Period. I don’t care if your a blogger, mommy blogger, business owner, medical professional etc.- transparency and honesty are necessary.

Have an issue with the way the term “Mom Blogger”? ..... they (as media does) tend to address this community on a whole (unfortunate, but true.) Issues such as these,
surely won’t generate an advance in regard (just the opposite.)

No, I wouldn’t walk into someone’s home and judge their life, however, this is business (in the context that I addressed the issue at hand, in my aforementioned vlog.)

To answer some of the questions that I've received:

Who am I to question what other’s do dishonestly? If they’re doing this to put food on their table, and money in their pocket, who am I to question? ….. REALLY? By those standards, it (as in, LIFE) would just be one huge free-for-all. By any means necessary, right?

From a business standpoint, yes, I do judge how people operate. Certainly. Just as I'm taking a step back and reevaluating how and where I choose to steer the direction of the content published on One Savvy Mom.

Do you honestly think that what each of us does within this community is without consequence to other’s (either good or bad)?

On the topic of Rafflecopter and "multi-blog" cash giveway's referenced in my vlog:

"I Don't Know How She Does It" ....Every Mother Can Surely Relate!

When the preview clips for this film first aired, I was a more than thrilled to see a storyline that was finally showcasing the difficulties of juggling and balancing motherhood, work and well, life.

Let's face it the "Leave It To Beaver" scenario, has been presented over and over again, but in reality quite frankly (in my humble opinion of course) is non-existent. By all means though, if you find a modern day June Cleaver, please correct my judgement.

All mother's, whether SAHM's, WAHM's, or out working amongst the general population face daily challenges and responsibilities that rival that of circus performers ANY DAY of the week. However, with all of this juggling comes precious rewards that are literally incomparable.

" I Don't Know How She Does It" accurately portrays the life of a working mom, depicting her (familiar) daily struggles with motherhood, her career, and maintaining a healthy balance in her marriage while ultimately striving to have it all.

Overall, this is definitely a film you want to miss! Fun storyline, speckled with humor and truisms that every mother can surely relate to!

a non-stop juggling act for Kate Reddy (Sarah Jessica Parker). As a determined Boston-based finance executive, she devotes her day to her job and her night to her adoring husband Richard (Greg Kinnear) and their two young children. Hi there everyone,
Over the past few months I have been dealing with various issues (surrounding this blog) and I really felt it was necessary to share some of what has been going on. For about 7 weeks I (as many other blogger's were - and some for a much longer time span) was cyber stalked and harassed by a women (Dawn Gordon) from Canada. The amount of stress that this created in our home during the Holiday's, was ridiculous and completely unfair. Though the situation now appears to have been taken into the hands of the authorities (just recently within the past 72hrs.) and appears to be under control it has left me feeling overwhelmingly vulnerable. As in, "well if she can do this, it is the WORLD WIDE web.....anyone can do it!" So, as many of you may have noticed - I haven't been blogging as regularly as usual.

In addition, over the
past few months, I've had to deal with several issues with sponsors shipping item's very slowly (beyond the requested 4-8 week time period in our terms and requiring much persistence on my part before seeing a response) or in a few cases not shipping them at all (which is unfortunate but it has happened).The issues have left me no choice but to re-structure the way that sponsored giveaway's are held. I'm requiring the item's up-front from sponsors that I haven't worked with in the past (prior to the giveaway publishing). It has been a pleasure to offer some incredible giveaway's (over 600 in two years!) to readers - however the frustration and stress (as I've stated previously) is too great for both reader's and myself. As noted in the site Terms of Use & Disclosure - I do not have the ability (unfortunately) to fill giveaway's when sponsors do not.

The giveaway's that are currently posted are the last giveaway's that I will be hosting on One Savvy Mom under the previous terms, moving forward the above outlined terms will go into effect.

With fond memories of attending Disney on Ice as a child, attending with my own family each year has become a treasured tradition in our home. Watching our children gaze in awe as their favorite Disney characters glide across the ice, is simply priceless!

After attending one of the newest additions to the Disney on Ice family of shows "Treasure Trove", I can easily say that it is one of their best shows to date. Various Disney story line's are presented throughout, as beloved Disney character's (Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald, the cast of Aladdin, The Lion King, and Peter Pan) , glide gracefully across the ice to favorite Disney Movie Soundtracks (toes were tapping and kids were dancing in their seats!).

As your round the Corner on 5th Ave. (at 49th) , in the heart Of Manhattan….you’ll find a place where magic and inspiration is palpable in the air. This past weekend our visit to American Girl Place began on the 3rd Floor in the Cafe. The menu options in the Cafe offered something for every one's tastes (see sample menu options HERE note: menu selection varies by location). For one all inclusive price you are served (when seated for dinner)b everages,starters, an entree of your choice and dessert (party packages are also available)!

And of course they've included the doll's in the fun! A chic pink doll sized chair (that attaches to the table - pictured below), and doll tea service are also provided for your child's doll (pictured below). The dining experience in the cafe is simply delightful, from start to finish. Delicious food, gorgeous presentation, and the cheerful service make for one memorable dining experience!

After our meal we headed off to the American Girl Photo Studio (located on the 3rd floor across from the Cafe), where our daughter participated in her very own American Girl Magazine Cover Shoot with her doll! The photo was then applied to the cover of the current month's issue of American Girl Magazine; the perfect way to commemorate the day!

Our next stop was the Doll Salon (located on the second floor)! The Doll Salon (complete with doll sized salon chairs and several hair stylists) offers a variety of hair styles to choose from, ranging in price from $10-$20 (several new styles available for 2012), and Doll Ear Piercing (priced at $14). We chose the ear piercing service. They pierce the doll's ears with a signature pair of silver star earrings, and also send your doll home with a box of earrings which includes 3 pairs of stud earrings, and 3 pairs of dangle earrings (all included with the $14 +tax cost of ear piercing!).

After having McKenna's ears pierced we browsed (starry eyed) through the various areas of American Girl Place. Spanning 3 stories (3 full floors!) you'll find every conceivable accessory, outfit, and play set to complete each American Girl doll's world! Browsing through all of the Historical Doll showcases, my daughter and I marveled at all the period fashions, authentic accessories, and corresponding play sets for the dolls. Each doll really does reveal so much about the lives of young women from generations past!

As a child I too adored American Girl. Though the company was brand new at that time, I will never forget pouring over the pages of my very first American Girl Book or the rush of tearing back the wrapping paper from the box of my American Girl Doll (Samantha) on Christmas morning! It has been incredibly heartwarming to watch my own daughter fall in love with this cherished line of Dolls and stories, just as I did so many years ago.

The Crayola Experience™: A Creative & Magical Celebration + Fun New Exhibits You Won't Want To Miss!

We made our way to downtown Easton, PA on New Year's Eve to The Crayola Experience for their New Year's Eve all day celebration, that concluded with a 12-ft. "Crayon Drop", and fireworks display!

Live music helped to fuel the fun energy of the party (The School Of Rock also played periodically throughout the day in another area). We all got in the spirit of the season with the varying creative opportunities available, as we made our way through the exhibits and craft stations.

Of course, no visit to The Crayola Experience would be complete without a stop at the World's Largest Crayon Caddy (pictured above) to color one (or all) of their seasonal coloring pages (several choices provided at the Crayon Caddy). This is always a huge hit with our daughter when we visit the Crayola Experience!

We all had a blast creating 2012 Happy New Year party hats (pictured above left). Each guest was provided the opportunity to make their own crown style hat, and was provided with a variety of tools to customize their creations. Crayons, markers, streamers, ribbon, construction paper, scissors, and glue, helped the kids (and the kids at heart) create something truly memorable and unique.

After we were all decked out in our celebratory hats, we headed over to one our favorite area to paint (the incredible conveyor style drying machine ensures that painted art is dry and ready to go in just under two minutes!). The kid's loved using the large easy to handle foam paint stamps (various styles of snowflake paint stamps were available) to make beautiful Winter themed works of art.

THE NEW EXHIBITS AT THE CRAYOLA EXPERIENCE:

New Year's wasn't the only reason to celebrate at the Crayola Experience December 31st! The Crayola Experience unveiled two brand new exhibits, that kid's are going to (and did) go absolutely crazy for! The Crayola Dry Erase Car (pictured above) is absolutely AWESOME! This entire (antique inspired) car is one great space for the kid's to get creative on! That's right! The entire car, in actuality is the creative base. Little one's will enjoy decorating and designing on the Dry Erase Car with Crayola dry erase markers and crayons.

Disney and Marvel character enthusiasts are sure to delight in having their picture taken in the brand new "Crayola Story Studio"! By standing in front of a themed screen, the computer takes a picture of your child and prints out a themed coloring page with your child's and the Character's image. With choices that include Disney's Cinderella, Disney Pixar's Cars Lightening McQueen and Spiderman, this is sure to become a fast favorite and popular exhibit at The Crayola Experience this year.

With a host of family friendly activities, live music, and the all around magic, that is Crayola, the New Year's Eve Party at The Crayola Experience was the perfect way to ring in the New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone! I truly can't believe that it's 2012! WHERE DOES THE TIME GO?

As I sit here and think back, I can hardly believe how I've grown and changed along with this blog over the past couple of years! In December of 2009 I created this blog as a free blog on blogger (hardly even understanding what it meant to blog!) , and had absolutely no idea where it would lead.

It has been a blessing in so many ways to bring you new information and reviews on some of the latest and greatest family friendly products, dining experiences, family travel destinations, and family friendly entertainment and events! It has been equally exciting to host over 600 reader giveaway's giving many of the you the chance to experience the products that we've reviewed first hand!

Most recently due to several changes in both my personal life and professional life, I will be implementing some exciting new changes on One Savvy Mom, making it both easier to navigate and providing new content that I think you'll all enjoy (including weekly family events Calendars listing fun local events and activities for the NYC, BOSTON, and LA areas).

As many of you may have noticed if you visit the old URL you are now redirected to our new domain http://www.onesavvymom.net/. After two years on a blogspot.com domain it was a necessary progression and I'm happy to say that no content was lost in the transition. You will also notice that pages are being implemented (all categories and pages will be finished by 1/5 making it easier to find the content your interested in ).

Though reader giveaway's will still be offered, many changes will be implemented in this area as well. Due to several issues with delayed shipping and some not filling the giveaways at all, we will implementing changes to ensure that giveaways are filled and preferably in a timely manner. A Little Bit About The 2012 New Year's Eve Party At The Crayola Experience

Atlanta has a peach. Vincennes, Ind., has a watermelon and Easton, Pa., has a vivid tangerine … crayon that is! Crayola will drop a 10-ft. vivid tangerine crayon at 8 p.m. on December 31 to colorfully celebrate the New Year at its family attraction The Crayola Experience. The family-friendly festivities begin at 2 p.m. with colorful and creative art activities and live entertainment throughout the facility. Two new exhibits that will turn kids’ creativity into colorful, visible form -- “Dry E-Race Car” and “Be the Star of Your Own Coloring Page” -- will debut at the event. Also premiering is a new “Inside Out Wall,” featuring a larger than life sea-themed mural kids can color on the see-through wall. Following the crayon drop at 8 p.m. (and weather permitting,) a fireworks display will light up the night sky in brilliant colors!

Our Experience

The waking process for our daughter and myself truly is a finely balanced process. The old saying, "don't poke the bear" definitely comes to mind. Yep, we are generally not morning people. My husband and son on the other hand are the complete opposite; always fully refreshed and way too cheery in the morning. And yes, I am a bit envious of their ability to rise so gleeful!

The Wake Up Light Plus gently

starts the waking process with a dim light and soft tone of your choice ( choose between the on-board nature sounds, a preset FM Radio Station or your favorite tunes by connecting your MP3 through USB). The light then gradually increases the level of brightness over a 30 minute time period. As the process begins 30 minutes before the set waking time, by the time that it's reached it's maximum level of brightness your body is more ready to wake (unlike an average alarm that jars you awake abruptly with loud unfriendly noise).

I've definitely been more refreshed and prepared when it comes time to get out of bed in the morning, and I'm loving all of the additional features in the Wake Up Light Plus! It doubles as a bed side lamp (adjustable in brightness), FM Radio, and sound machine (in addition to preloaded nature sounds, you can download additional free tones online via the USB port), and can be preset for 2 separate wake up times. Another plus is the ability set it to "snooze" by touching any portion of the lamp (no need to strain your eyes in the morning searching for the right button).

The dusk setting on the Wake Up Light Plus is perfect for both adults that may have a hard time falling asleep and children. The dusk feature gently eases you into sleep by dimming the brightness of light over a 30 minute time period. It's a great tool to help little one's fall asleep! Our daughter is terrified of the dark, and though she has two night lights in her room, she is not a huge fan of having the lamp abruptly shut off. We will be purchasing a second Wake Up Light Plus for her room so that she can drift of to sleep gently with the soft glow gradually dimming.

Our Experience

Our son is just one of those kid's that seems to pick up EVERYTHING, instantly. So, when it came to reading, he picked everything up very easily and was reading on his own at the age of 2. He was reading chapter books by five, and when I look back, I don't really ever recall doing more than simply read to him frequently throughout the day and at bedtime (no long sounding it out sessions - we just read to him).

We now do the same with our daughter, and while she seemed to be advancing at a fair pace, she really needed that extra boost of help that we've found in the Tag Reader. This small wonder has her progressing phenomenally, and in more way's than one! Pen like in it's appearance, the Tag offers several settings that allow the child or parent to utilize the Tag in a variety of ways. Either use it to scroll from word to word (the child moves the Tag from word to word and it will read the words aloud), or it can read the entire sentence / page (when placed on the icon). Adding to the array of features, the Tag Reader also allows children to learn/practice handwriting with the corresponding handwriting kits for this device (walking children through the strokes needed to create each letter).

What I've discovered as a parent, is that our daughter loves the independence and ability to explore the books, maps, and writing activities on her own! That independence is allowing her to flourish and advance more quickly than I could have ever imagined possible, before experiencing the Tag Reader!
