Is Your Food Causing Global Warming?

noreply@blogger.com (onesiteperday) — Mon, 02 Nov 2015 06:00:00 +0000

EatLowCarbon.org was created by Bon Appétit Management Company, a food service pioneer operating hundreds of cafés all over America for corporations, universities, and specialty venues. This website brings the work of various researchers who have been calculating the environmental impact of various food items. You may be surprised at some of the results.

EatLowCarbon.org brings you an interactive display of various food items which are most typical in the average diet. One can simply hover over each food item to obtain the relevant carbon footprint. So are you being environmentally friendly whenever you go healthy with cereal and milk for breakfast? Wrong... cereal with milk is in the top half of the list. And what about french fries? Are these as bad to the environment as much as they are to your health? You will be wrong again if you think that.

This is because the carbon footprint is calculated by the amount of greenhouse gases which are emitted throughout the food item's complete lifecycle - including the materials required to grow and/or fertilize it, energy required for harvesting and transportation, and till the item is processed and cooked. So a healthy food item might be good for your health, but the harvesting and processing might leave a huge toll on the carbon footprint.

5 easy tips to reduce your dietary carbon footprint?

You bought it, you eat it - don't waste food
Make "seasonal and regional" your food mantra
Move away from beef and cheese
Stop flying fish and fruit - don't buy air-freighted food
If it's processed and packaged, skip it

If you live outside the US, we recommend that you stick to these 5 tips rather than memorizing the carbon footprint value in the interactive display. Why? Because the interactive display has a number of assumptions and therefore depends on where you live. For example, salmon has a very low carbon footprint on the interactive display, but then again if you live on a remote island where there is no local salmon supply, then this will have to be air-freighted and/or shipped.

Read more at EatLowCarbon.org. Finally, there is even a quiz for you to test your knowledge of which meals are planet friendlier.

Which are the World's Most Valuable Brands

noreply@blogger.com (onesiteperday) — Sun, 01 Nov 2015 11:29:00 +0000

A couple of weeks ago, we featured a page showing the world's most popular brands (article here). However, being popular doesn't necessarily make you valuable. Today we found a list by Forbes showing the world's top 100 valuable brands for 2015. The top 3 might be brands one would have mentioned in his top 5: #1 is Apple leading the way with a staggering $145.3 billion brand value, #2 is Microsoft at a significantly lower $69.3 billion, and #3 is Google at a close $65.6 billion brand value.

Any surprises in the list?...

Perhaps the biggest surprise is Facebook, down to #10. At #4, Coca-Cola might also be a surprise for many, with the extremely popular fast food chain McDonalds at #6. We will need to re-visit the list next year with rankings for 2016 to see how the WHO report on processed food published a couple of days ago will affect McDonalds market value. It could also be the case of McDonalds realigning their menu to meet more the demands of health conscious customers.

With regards to automakers, despite being in the news for a number of recalls this year, Japanese carmaker Toyota leads to way at #8. The Germans follow with BMW at #16, to be chased by another Japanese company Honda at #23. Volkswagon are at #67 in the overall list, and it is interesting to monitor these next year to see what impact the emissions scandal would leave on this German brand.

And beer? Well... Budweiser are the beer kings at #25, with Heineken second albeit barely making it into the list at #90.

Marty - The Self Drifting Electric DeLorean

noreply@blogger.com (onesiteperday) — Wed, 21 Oct 2015 11:30:00 +0000

Just today on Back to the Future Day, a group of Stanford researchers unveiled the university's latest self-driving vehicle, and what more appropriate than a DeLorean DMC-12? Only this time, the vehicle is electric... and it can drift as well... completely on its own. The researchers state that Marty stands for "Multiple Actuator Research Test bed for Yaw control." Then again, it seems more like the name was chosen in direct remembrance to Marty McFly from Back to the Future. The scope of Marty (the car) is to drift like a professional race car driver, in order to study how cars perform in extreme situations, which could ultimately guide the development of autonomous safety protocols.

Wikileaks the Easy Way

noreply@blogger.com (onesiteperday) — Wed, 29 Dec 2010 12:22:00 +0000

One of the most popular topics during the past weeks has been Wikileaks. Now most of us might not have grasped the concept and what actually is going on. To keep it simple, Wikileaks publishes submissions of private, secret and classified media which originate from anonymous news sources and news leaks. Problem is that the Wikileaks site leaves much to be desired. It’s just too complex and daunting to search through. So others have attempted to make this easier.

Our favourites are the interactives by Spiegel Online and The Guardian. Both feature a map of the world, from where you can check out which countries have been referenced, together with the articles in question. Now both are not that accurate... the Spiegel one needs updating, and The Guardian one is not that complete when it comes to countries referenced... but still a good starting point for those just starting to explore the topic.

Check out the Wikileaks interactive by The Guardian here.

Facebook 2010 Memology - Top Status Trends of the Year

noreply@blogger.com (onesiteperday) — Tue, 28 Dec 2010 10:22:00 +0000

Over the past days we have been pointing out what has been popular on the web for 2010. We checked Google, Twitter and YouTube. What about Facebook? We had mentioned that chart showing Facebook friendship between countries. But what about the most popular trends on the world’s most popular social network service? Check out Facebook Memology 2010. Certain trends are consistent with those of Google and Twitter – World Cup, iPad, Haiti and once again... teenager Justin Bieber. And then emerged another word... or better still, shorthand, which has conquered Facebook... the teenage expression HMU. First Justin Bieber, then HMU, surely a 2010 teenage web.

Check out the Top 10 Facebook status trends for 2010 here.

Twixtmas - Make the most of the days between Christmas and New Year

noreply@blogger.com (onesiteperday) — Mon, 27 Dec 2010 16:43:00 +0000

"Imagine if most people did five things during Twixtmas to make the world a better place. Wouldn't it be great if you did some small thing to help make this happen?" These are the words of Twixtmas campaign organizer Andy Green. The idea is to encourage people make the most of the days between Christmas and New Year and instead of shopping, scoffing or slothing, persuade people of doing good deeds. Each of the days from the 27 December till the 31 have been given a different theme. Go on and do something for yourself on Day 1, Day 2 is to get you do something for someone else, on Day 3 help your friends, Day4 is focused on doing something for the planet and the last Day is themed to do something for your future.

Android in Space

noreply@blogger.com (onesiteperday) — Sun, 26 Dec 2010 16:49:00 +0000

Anybody remembers when we posted that site about the iPhone that went to space and back? (Check it out here). Well, now Android has gone to space as well! A team of Googlers sent the new Nexus S 100,000ft into the sky. Results are pretty impressive as well. The phone continued functioning up to an altitude of 60,000ft and temperatures as low as -50 degree Celsius! So iPhone has been there, Android as well... should we be expecting a Blackberry or a Windows Mobile now?

The Best Of The Bottom Of YouTube's Barrel

noreply@blogger.com (onesiteperday) — Fri, 24 Dec 2010 16:38:00 +0000

Usually we get loads of rankings about the best things. Top 10 of this... Top 25 of that etc. 0 Views is a very simple website which scrapes YouTube and suggests videos that have never been viewed. The slogan of the site is “the best of the bottom of the barrel” and the concept is that some of these vids are not necessarily that bad. It could simply be merely that nobody has come across them. In fact some of the videos which were featured on 0 Views eventually went viral and got thousands of views!

Check out 0 Views at www.zeroviews.biz.
