We are very excited! A couple of months back we wrote a article on a software developer who had created an iPhone app for measuring your Pupilary Distance. This was great news for online consumers as the P.D. (pupillary distance) measurement is the one thing that opticians don't have to document on your eyeglass prescriptions. This can make buying glasses online a little more difficult, as you need to specifically ask your optician to supply your P.D. or calculate it yourself using a ruler, which can be a little tricky! We got in contact with the developers of the iPhone app and asked them if they could develop a version for desktop computers and laptops that uses a normal webcam. ...They said they could!

Pupillary Distance is the distance between the center of one pupil (the central black dot of your eye) to the center of the other pupil. Measured in millimeters, PD is important as it helps the laboratory technician to accurately create your eyeglasses frames by lining up your pupil with the center of the lens, it is also a great aid in buying glasses online. As for obtaining your PD measurement, eye doctors are generally not legally obligated to give you this as it's technically not part of the eye test itself, but something measured for the purpose of creating eyeglasses frames. However, the reason why your local optical shop would not give you your PD is because they want you to pay their inflated prices for frames and prescription lenses.

Are Optometrists headed for the Job Centre? If a prototype application for Android based smartphones proves successful then they might be. Researchers at MIT's media lab have an app which lets users check their own eyesight by viewing their mobile phone screen through a special plastic lens device. The device costs under £2, a great deal cheaper than an appointment with your opticians. The eye test software on the phone works out the data needed to create their eye prescription in around 3 minutes. While it can't check for diseases like glaucoma, which are standard with UK eye tests, it can provide all the details needed to buy the perfect pair of glasses online.

Pupillary Distance is the measurement between the centre of your pupils. The provision of a P.D. measurement helps ensure your glasses frames fit comfortably. At the moment, although the law may change, the P.D. measurement is not part of your eyeglass prescription, this means that once you leave your opticians you don't really have everything you need to buy glasses online.

This is no longer the case! An optometrist from Denver, USA, has created a App for the iPhone called Pupil Meter that can measure your pupillary distance very accurately and provide you with a measurement in seconds. This means that you can purchase perfectly fitting glasses online and save a heap load of cash.
