Black Friday and Cyber Monday are behind us. We hope you and your business did fantastically well.

Holidays 2022 eCommerce Sales Report

A recent report from Adobe based on 85% of the top 100 US top retailers showed that consumers have already spent $107.7 billion online between Black Friday and the end of Cyber Week 2022, up 8.7% vs 2021.

As predicted in our Holiday insight article, Buy Now Pay Later was a key factor for growth and that’s because consumers need payment flexibility and convenience with recession and inflation looming and BNPL brands are offering exactly that, with interest-free installments that help shoppers get what they want and merchants to improve checkout conversion by a 20% on average.

On the other hand, Curbside Pickup a.k.a Click and Collect a.k.a Buy Online Pick Up in Store (BOPIS) didn’t grow compared to last year when the peak was mainly due to the COVID Pandemic.

Other factors that drove record sales this year:

unusually deep discounts

mobile purchases

marketing investment with paid search accounting for 28% of online sales on Cyber Week and social media although accounting for less than 5% but experiencing the highest growth at 27% YOY

2023 Outlook: recession and inflation are a challenge for the Retail sector

Source: OECD Economic Outlook (Edition 2022/2)

According to the November 2022 report from the OECD, it’s not looking good. Here’s what to expect:

Energy prices are pushing all prices up

Slower global growth, and increase in interest rates put more households at financial risk

Inflation is already high in 2022 and eating into households’ budgets, but will improve in 2023 and 2024

That means that for eCommerce and Retail at large, discretionary spending will be less abundant, consumers will be more price sensitive and each marketing roller will have to work much harder to attract shoppers and convert them.

2023 Strategies and actions you can take to boost your eCommerce website

When there is economic growth, everyone wins. When shoppers are more careful about where to spend their dollars, you need to beat the competition on price, promotion, customer service, product quality, or choice and make sure your shoppers stick with you during their whole online purchase process, from landing on your store through to placing their orders.

As such, we partnered up with best-of-breed solutions to help you maximize every single step of your online sales funnel, including:

Adobe eCommerce platform

Bemeir Magento Agency

Dotdigital Marketing automation

Gorgias Customer Service

Jetrails Hosting

Klevu Search and Personalization

OneStepCheckout Checkout Optimization

Signifyd Fraud Protection

Shipper HQ Shipping Optimization

Yotpo Reviews

Meet Henk Valk, founder and CEO at Falcon Media based in Groningen in the Netherlands.

Magento Background

Falcon Media has been working with the Magento webshop system around 2009. As a result, we have a lot of experience with both Magento 1 and Magento 2. Because we worked a lot on the floor at webshop owners, we can respond well to the various issues and solve problems that a webshop owner often encounters.

Top strength of Falcon Media

Quick responding and fast solving.

We carry out exactly what the customers have in mind when they want to add new features.

We look further and ask further because sometimes the case isn’t good for your money.

After all, we want to grow together with us. That is why we are in for long-term cooperation.

Tech Stack

We work with Magento Open Source only, because we don’t believe in Adobe’s way. We fell in love with the Magento Community and want to give the community as much back as we get from them.

We optimize the webshop mainly with Hyvä Theme as Frontend, Prismic as CMS and OnestepCheckout as Checkout. We recommend Hypernode as web hosting for our customers because we have set up our infrastructure around them with high speed and security.

Magento 2 Showcase

Berghoff Toys is a Belgian company selling branded motorized vehicles for children aged one to 6 years old, online.

Whether you want to give your kids a mini Jeep Wrangler, a Volkswagen Beetle, a BMW Police motorbike or a Bentley Continental convertible this Christmas, it’s all there with an average price of €200.

<img src="https://blog.onestepcheckout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image.png" alt="BergHoff Toyas, Motorized vehicles for children.

In less than a week, Falcon Media purchased and implemented OneStepCheckout for their client’s Magento 2 store. We styled the checkout to match the popular two-column layout with the order total to the right and the shipping and payment detail form on the left.

OnStepCheckout module’s default feature allowed us to offer the seamless registration tick box so as to address the account creation friction point, as well as integrate Klarna Pay Later option that we think will be quite useful this year to drive traffic and conversion given the inflation rate and economic context.

See it live here: https://www.autovoorkinderen.nl/

Written by Natasha Zurnamer, a member of the Forbes Finance Council and
CEO at Optty. Cover image generated by DALL.E 2.

Doing well in a boom is easy. It’s when growth becomes more uneven that exceptional retailers have a chance to use a combination of proven strategy and cutting-edge technology to break away from the pack.

As we count down into the autumn and holiday shopping season in an uncertain economic landscape, we thought we’d ask some experts for their top tips on beating the competition in today’s complex and evolving eCommerce landscape.

The news on inflation, increasing interest rates, surging energy prices and bearish predictions on consumer spending means you need to be on point for growth this holiday season. Your strategy needs to be well planned in order to ensure your peak season growth ambition is realized, outsmarting the competition should be at the top of your list.

Tip one: Shoppers need financial flexibility and choice

Undermined consumer sentiments and discretionary spending and need to be addressed

That’s where Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is a good idea. BNPL let consumer purchase items and pay for them with interest-free installments. This payment method is very popular among the younger demographics who are mainly buying in the fashion, beauty and electronics verticals. We now also see BNPL solutions like Humm targeting older demographics with more disposable income and making responsible although higher value purchases such as in health, automotive and home renovation categories.

Key growth drivers for merchants lie in offering more payment choices

According to data from BNPL provider Zip, 91% of retailers that offer BNPL saw benefits – from higher revenue and conversion rates to increases in average cart value, more repeat purchases, and higher profits. Read more about the benefits of BNPL for Consumers and Merchants.

A case study conducted by Optty in 2022 revealed the power of choice in BNPL: in the New Zealand market, a B2C fashion merchant increased sales by 40% by adding two BNPL options by 21% in the Australian market by adding five BNPL options to their checkout.

Merchants can make the most of the BNPL Market consolidation

BNPL players are going through market consolidation and while customers are engaging in BNPL as their preferred payment method, offering choice is key to success. It takes time and effort to keep up with the fast evolution of the market landscape as every month players exit your market, new players enter, sometimes you discover it as your rep is not answering etc…

That’s why using Optty is more relevant than ever! Through a single API integration, you can access over 55 BNPLs, in 36 currencies and 60 countries. All in one place you can sign up, and turn on or off key BNPL solutions based on your performance with your own demographics and verticals. As a bonus, you will reap the benefits of the BNPLs driving their customers to your site.

“Optty offers retailers an onramp to the revenue superhighway. Retailers who have turned to Optty report strong gains across all the metrics that matter.”

For a limited time only, you get to try Optty for free and test it to see how it boosts your holiday performance

Tip two: Shipping preferences changed post COVID

The pandemic complicated shopping for consumers as well as retailers. With many shops shuttered or restricting in-store purchases, shoppers needed new ways to pick up and return the items they bought. This led to a surge in Buy Online, Pickup In-Store (BOPIS) purchases, popularly known as click-and-collect.

According to a report by Research and Markets, the BOPIS market is expected to surge to US$703 billion by 2027 from US$244 billion in 2021, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 19%.

“Consumers like the BOPIS experience because it offers them the best of both worlds. They can research and complete a purchase online and then pick it up at a convenient location, get it faster and save on shipping fees.”

Said Pierre Masson, CEO of French-based Magento extension vendor Wyomind.

With Magento 2.4, Adobe Commerce introduced Inventory Management for Commerce. This set of tools allows retailers who ship stock from a range of locations (e.g. stores, warehouses, dropshipping) to accurately manage stock and recommend inventory sources to customers based on their addresses.

Merchants can also go one step further and get more customization like store locator, store page, order calendar or preferred store your with extensions like Wyomind BOPIS extensions.

Tip three: Drive traffic to an outstanding browsing experience

Inflation is rising in countries around the globe at its fastest pace in decades. And with household budgets facing new pressures, shoppers have become more discerning about what they buy, and more likely to shop around.

That’s why, more than ever, it’s important to offer a fast, secure and appealing shopping experience. Slow websites can be a big deterrent as they:

Reduce brands visibility as the speed deteriorates ranking on Google Search Engine Result Pages

Create friction and force visitors to leave to browse on a faster site

Negatively impact the brand reputation and will be remembered as “a frustrating experience”

The world is in a hurry these days and shoppers quickly become impatient if faced with technological issues.

If you’re on Magento Open Source, you can boost your website performance and shoppers’ experience by implementing Hyvä Themes. It makes sure long page loading times are a thing of the past.

“We remove the pain for Magento 2 developers by making it easy for them to build a beautiful and ultra-fast eCommerce website that achieves maximum scores in terms of Core Web Vitals”

Said Willem Wigman, Founder and CEO at Hyvä.

Tip four: Address what undermines Checkout Conversion

According to the Baymard Institute, which conducts research on online user experience, 70% of shoppers abandon their carts before checkout. Among the top 4 reasons cited for doing so?

An excessively long or complicated check-out process or a glitchy or slow website.

Forcing account creation

Not showing order totals upfront

Not offering enough payment options

Just as they don’t want to wait for pages to load, consumers are also reluctant to jump through hoops to complete a purchase.

If the checkout process is too complicated or slow, or if they don’t find the payment and shipping options they desire, many are more than prepared to walk away from their piled-up digital carts and shop elsewhere.

Research from Baymard suggests that the average eCommerce retailer can boost conversion rates by more than 35% simply by improving checkout design.

OneStepCheckout, as you know, does just that by making sure that:

the checkout page loads at lightning speed

registration is seamless, the total calculated cost is shown and updated at all times

the plugin works seamlessly with most third-party solutions in the Magento ecosystem, including a full range of different ways to pay: from credit cards to buy now, pay later.

Quick win to stand out in the current economic situation

In summary, as a priority and key differentiator, you can address those critical steps along the online sales funnel:

A faster site that drives traffic and improves the browsing experience

Remove friction at checkout

Offer convenience and cost-efficient shipping AND payment options

With OneStepCheckout, Hyvä Themes, Wyomind and Optty, you can find the keys to unlocking those issues and be sure to implement reputable, proven and tested excellent quality solutions that can show real benefits with minimal integration hassle.

1. BOPIS is growing faster than eCommerce

Globally, the Buy Online Pickup In-Store (BOPIS) market is expected to reach US$ 703.18 Billion by 2027, growing at an approx 20% CAGR til then, based on a study by Research and Markets.

In the United Kingdom, sales where the BOPIS shipping method is chosen will account for 11% of eCommerce sales by 2025 with a growth of 50% between 2021 and 2025.

In the United States, Click and Collect Sales (or Curbside pickup) are forecasted to reach $95 Bn in 2022, 20% up on 2021, and will account for almost 10% of eCommerce sales. The trend started with the COVID-19 pandemic and is predicted to continue and grow faster than online retail sales by 2025, according to Insider Intelligence.

US BOPIS sales, growth rate and % of retail eCommerce Sales 2020 – 2025

2. Adobe Commerce launched new Multi-Source inventory Management initiatives in 2022

Magento 2.4 included Inventory Management features (formerly known as MSI) allowing merchants to manage their product stock level from one store or multiple sources such as warehouses, dropshipping etc… Read more about Adobe Commerce Inventory Management.

One year after Adobe and Walmart announced their partnership to integrate Walmart’s omnichannel fulfillment technologies and Marketplace with Adobe Commerce, Walmart Commerce Technologies releases their Store Fulfillment extension on Magento Marketplace, exclusive to Adobe Commerce (on-premise or on Cloud) merchants.

3. Why is BOPIS driving checkout conversion improvement?

Key reasons are driven by consumer preference and convenience:

Less waiting time than traditional delivery

Less queue and in-store shopping

More cost-effective

Less shipping issues (wrong address, physically waiting for delivery etc…)

When you know that 50% of shoppers who abandon their cart do so because of unexpected shipping costs, you know that you can save a few carts if you offer free BOPIS. Learn more about the top reasons for cart abandonment.

4. Who is Wyomind, how did they specialize in extending built-in MSI features?

Wyomind is a French technology vendor that provides smart, efficient, and user-friendly modules for Magento, and now expanding to other eCommerce platforms such as WooCommerce, and Shopify.

For more than 11 years in the eCommerce market, they have been on the front line to receive online merchants’ requests and identify common problems that they may have.

The variety of customers gives them the chance to have a comprehensive idea of the demand and, therefore, offer extensions that meet the real needs of e-merchants, including household names such as Chanel, Decathlon, Christian Louboutin, Nestlé or Peugeot.

5. What’s the difference between the Adobe Commerce Store Pickup and Wyomind BOPIS extensions?

A fully configurable store locator: business days, opening hours, days off, address, location on the map, description, images, store owner email, store locator custom description, custom attributes, link to the stores’ pages…

an adaptable checkout: translation, map, geolocation, get direction feature, days and hours display, date and hour format configuration, store description and information, time required to handle the orders, price…

Specific store pages for each store that you can configure as you want.

Orders calendar in the back-office that displays all Click&Collect orders.

Preferred store feature so that customers can choose a store where they often shop.

You can use Pickup@Store on any version of Magento 2. If using the Magento MSI module, you must use the Click & Collect extension.

6. What’s the difference between Walmart Store Fulfillment and Wyomind’s extensions?

Wyomind supports Magento Open Source merchants as well as Adobe Commerce/ Enterprise clients while Walmart only supports the latter

Wyomind extensions are cost-effective, starting from €310 (one-time fee including integration with OneStepCheckout services)

Thoroughly tested with over 3,300 Magento stores adopting BOPIS or Click and Collect extensions including merchants such as:

Swan Bathrooms (AU)

Imaginarium (ES)

Thomas Ridley (UK)

7. What does integration with OneStepCheckout look like?

The Click&Collect module integrates perfectly with OneStepCheckout:

Simple manual tweaks are needed to make those extensions fully compatible with OneStepCheckout. You can do it yourself or get Wyomind’s team to help for a fee.

8. How do I get Wyomind’s extensions?

As an exclusive offer to celebrate our partnership with Wyomind and help you go one step further in addressing the #1 reason for cart abandonment, we are offering you, until 31st December 2022:

10% discount with Promo code: OSCDEAL

If you are using MSI, then get Wyomind’s Click and Collect here

If you’re not using MSI, get Wyomind’s Pickup@Store here

NB: when you choose your extension, remember to click on the “add to cart” button on the left (not express checkout on the right) so you can enter the promo code.

We are delighted to announce our partnership with humm. Why? Because the Buy Now Pay Later and Consumer Credit market is booming, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, as it benefits both consumers who get more flexibility with their finances, and merchants who can offer cost-effective options and boost their checkout conversion rate.

Humm Group Limited (ASX: HUM) traces its origins back to 1988 and offers financial services to a network of 16,000 retailers and business partners including multi-billion-dollar giants such as Harvey Norman. Their core product offers customers a flexible way to pay in smaller, more affordable instalments, up to £30K!

Now their brand is bleeding orange as they release their Magento 2 integration, especially to the UK market. To celebrate, we are partnering up so you can leverage both our solutions in just a few clicks to reduce your cart abandonment and get more sales without any additional advertising spend.

Humm UK and Ireland CEO, PJ Byrne said:

‘As we continue to grow our UK presence following FCA approval, we’re thrilled to be partnering with OneStepCheckout to enable Magento merchants to double down on improving their Checkout conversion rates.

We’ve seen a huge increase in demand for split-payment solutions, embedded directly into e-commerce platforms, bringing the benefits of flexible credit directly to customers. This new raft of partnerships is the next step in our ambition to bring the credit market into the 21st Century, offering a range of credit solutions at different stages of customers’ lives.’

Who is humm?

humm is ranking among the top 200 companies on the Australian Securities Exchange and can rely on over 30 years’ experience to meet the needs of both consumers and merchants. The rebrand supports their strategic decision to divest from Commercial Leasing operations and focus as a pure digital credit finance provider. As an example of their innovative spirit and understanding of the market demand, they are the first to offer Virgin’s Velocity air mile points on payments in New Zealand.

humm is used by 2.7 million consumers and their digital credit finance offering is the market leader for purchases over $500. The company operates in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and have launched in the UK, targeting high price point categories such as healthcare, home improvement, lifestyle and automotive.

How is humm different?

If we were to define what makes humm stand out from other consumer lending and finance brands, it would be about their maturity:

The core company was founded more than three decades ago, allowing them to pick up trends, insights and build on their experience of operating within consumer finance – whereas many other players have only popped up in the last five years.

The core customer base is 35-55 years old (older than the traditional users of BNPL), a demographic group that typically earns more and spends less frequently, but on bigger ticket items when they do. Typically, they are of a higher financial maturity with a more careful approach to repayments.

They offer a great range of products from ‘little things’ (in the BNPL space) to ‘big things’ within the consumer lending space up to £30,000.

Being FCA regulated, with public listing pedigree, humm is a profitable and sustainable business looking for long-term partnerships with brands that align.

humm UK products

Up to £3,000

Interest-free, payable over 5 fortnightly or 6 or 12 monthly instalments.

Up to £30,000

FCA-regulated, with monthly instalments payable up to 6 years. Totally flexible in how the product is set up from interest-free, interest-bearing, and half/half with variable application and monthly fees where applicable.

Consumer Electronics: Acer.com.au Magento 2 Checkout Page. using OneStepCheckout and humm

Why use humm with OneStepCheckout?

Benefits of offering Consumer Finance

We are all about checkout conversion and always will be. This alignment has been defined by who we choose to partner with.

Based on our full review, consumer finance and BNPL in the United Kingdom is forecast to account for 10% of e-commerce sales by 2024, reaching £26 billion. With 1 in 5 Brits having used it in 2020, the trend keeps accelerating, pushed by fintech brands and under greater scrutiny from regulators.

humm helps boost key metrics along the eCommerce sales funnel Attracting more customers

Increasing checkout conversion rates

Boosting average spend

Encouraging repeat purchases

In fact, the result they recorded on their Australian customers speak for themselves:

Buy Now Pay Later has gone mainstream

In the last couple of years, Buy Now Pay Later has become an absolute must-have for any eCommerce business. The trend intensified during the COVID 19 pandemic with households needing greater budget flexibilities and Fintech companies offering very attractive and convenient ways to pay for purchases. Read our full BNPL review.

Why is Merchant adoption growing so strongly?

Although merchants are the ones who foot the bill at the end of the day, they are still finding multiple advantages to the BNPL model. Offering BNPL boosts a number of key eCommerce metrics such as:

Improved Checkout Conversion by an average of 20%*

Increased Average Order Value (AOV or Basket size), by 18% to 60%*

More Return visits, purchases and loyal customers (driving uplift in Customer Life Time Value)

Better customer acquisition as BNPL brands provide exposure to their millions of consumers

* Sources: Affirm, Zip US, AfterPay Australia,

How to choose your Buy Now Pay Later vendors?

Although consolidation is happening through multimillion-dollar acquisition, there is still an overwhelming choice for merchants who want to offer this new way to pay.

Not all regions are equal in terms of BNPL offerings. For instance, Australia is a pioneer in this market segment, offering the largest number of solutions, whereas DACH Regions are more conservative and already tied to Klarna who acquired Sofort several years ago.

So, apart from the markets they operate in, what are the key differences between Buy Now Pay Later Solutions?

Fee structure and terms & conditions (both for consumers and merchants)

The number of consumers they can market to

The demographics and vertical preferences of their consumers i.e younger buying fast fashion vs older paying for healthcare or home renovations

Specific marketing and promotional activities

Integration effort (how easy or difficult it will be to launch with them)

Ultimately, selecting BNPL partners should be as simple as understanding how the provider’s terms, demographics, and industry coverage, fit in with your business. Unfortunately, however, what typically weighs most heavily for a merchant is understanding the development cost to get the provider integrated.

But what if integration was no longer an issue?

Optty makes it easier to offer more BNPL options and save lost sales

Optty dashboard

That’s where innovation comes in to solve a big pain point that a growing number of merchants are experiencing. As Natasha Zurnamer, CEO of Optty puts it:

“Buy Now Pay Later is a revolution in retail and Optty is a revolution in BNPL, we enable the superhighway to retail revenue”.

Optty is a company based in Singapore with founders from Australia and the UK and decades of experience in retail and eCommerce.

Optty merchants like Taking Shape, City Beach, and Cotton On Group are already seeing significant benefits by using Optty to offer multiple BNPL options in their markets. In fact, Optty retailer data shows that using Optty to offer 4+ BNPL options in each region you operate can impact order conversion.

Without offering a 3rd BNPL at checkout you risk losing up to 16% of sales.

Customers want choices in the way they pay and Optty is leading the charge in enabling this.

To further confirm its proof of concept and product market fit, Optty recently raised $9M to accelerate adoption of their products. To celebrate, Optty is offering OneStepCheckout users an exclusive offer, for a limited time only.

Easy to install & integrate: unlock access to all the BNPL you need in one place

1 single, fast, & free integration unlocks access to 45 BNPL providers in 59 countries and 36 currencies

Never worry again about BNPL consolidation forcing you to update an integration

Benefit from millions of BNPL customers around the world

Fully control your BNPL offering with the Optty Retail Control Center:

Add a new provider in only 2 clicks

Reorder providers in checkout with simple drag & drop functionality

Set custom order thresholds for when to offer a provider

Create custom PDPs and widgets with ease

Realtime, side-by-side performance to inform expert business decisions.

Optty Integration with OneStepCheckout

Straight out-of-the-box, easy as one, two, three.

With Optty you can benefit from the perfect combo that will further reduce your cart abandonment and boost your checkout conversion.
