TASTE.38 | CUCUMBER ROSEMARY GIN & TONIC

Refreshingly, pretty cocktails have been on my mind lately so when I cam across this lovely recipe by The Kitchn, I had to share it with you all. Rosemary and cucumber remind me of spa infused water, but when you add a little gin and tonic tto the mix you end up having something really special to serve to your summer guests. Enjoy!

CUCUMBER ROSEMARY GIN & TONIC

| ingredients |

one cucumber

one lime

three sprigs rosemary

two ounces of hendrick's gin

four ounces of tonic water

ice

| directions |

peel on half of a cucumber

and slice a lime into eight wedges

in a highball glass and

three slices of cucumber

one sprig of rosemary

juice from a lime wedge

and one ounce of gin

muddle with the back of a spoon

strain through a mesh strainer

into a second highball glass

add several cubes of ice

and three sliced of unpeeled cucumber

top with remaining gin and tonic

and serve garnished with rosemary sprigs

Two things. One, never cut five inches off your hair if your are already feeling the slightest bit down. The aftershock does not help. Two, if you are depressed, saddened or grieving, yoga is the best medicine. Take a class, enjoy, embrace. Give yourself the time to reconnect to yourself and the universe. The pain you feel doing Vinyasa is far greater than you feel emotionally so you technically win for an hour.

Time heals all wounds. I'm presently in the purgatory of this dimension. However, these lovely ladies tend to cheer me up on a day to day basis.

FATHER'S DAY FAVES VIA CISTHENE

Cisthene is owned and operated by Jen Altman. I recently discovered her shop for men while searching for vintage jewelry only to find this talented woman is a jack of all trades. She is a photographer and author whose work has been featured in Martha Stewart Living, Food & Wine, Kinfolk Magazine and Refinery 29 (among many others). True to form, her jewelry is quaint and personal but I think it's "The Men's Shop" that I truly fell in love with. With Father's Day just around the corner her mens product line makes school charm, new again. A man deserves to be pampered, especially the husband, father and grandfather in your life. I believe Cisthene's products do just that.

TAKING A MOMENT. WILL BE BACK SOON.

Only a few of you know what I am about to tell you as I haven't had the courage to talk about it yet on FS. Though you may have seen the signs. The sudden instagram photo bombs or the sporadic posts as of late or even deeper reflection about living in the present, not in the future or the past. B, Jersey and I have been dealing with a not so fun topic to discuss on a blog that I created for people to pop in every now and then and find something positive, fun and enlightening.

Truth is, over the past four months, Jersey has been fighting lymphoma. We first found out about his diagnosis when we were in NYC in February. Three days in to a eight day trip and only half a day of blogshop class, we suddenly found ourselves on the last flight out of JFK, headed home to meet with the our wonderful Veterinarian and determine the aggressiveness, the treatment options and the chances of him being able to fight this horrible disease. In a matter of an instant we were immersed in research of Eastern and Western medical treatments, nutrition and of course, the odds. We changed everything, his diet, his protocol and our schedules so from that day forward, he would never be alone.

As many of you know, cancer is a vicious beast. It will fight just as hard as you do. Jersey did very well during the initial part of his treatment and loved his new food, his trips to the vet every Wednesday and his acupuncture sessions. Sadly, in the end (which was a few days ago) we knew he was calling it. The look in his eyes said "no more, I am tired but more importantly, I want to go home". With the guidance of our Vet, we knew when to look for those signs. They came quickly and as she advised us we would know when it was time. True to form, we did.

I understand that many of you have lost the pets you have loved deeply and for that--my heart goes out to you. I'm not going to eulogize Jersey on Fourth Street, because our love for him is so deep. This post would go on forever. I do want you to know that he will live in the memories of the hikes we took him on during the summer months, the spontaneous swims he loved so much when we stumbled upon lakes, the snow he played in all winter long and the bunnies he couldn't wait to see every morning while had a cup of coffee on the patio. He blessed our lives for eight years that our love for him is too ample to put into words. One thing I do know is that until we get to see him again, he will live in our hearts indefinitely.

Thank you for understanding that Fourth Street will not be updated for a few weeks while we move through the process of such a difficult loss. It may be back with a new look and feel but still highlighting the same content I care so much about. You could still find me on Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter where I will continue to share thoughts, passions and my love of all things environmentally friendly.

Thank you for your support and kindness during this time as well as for following Fourth Street. You are the reason I created this space and you will always be the reason it will continue.

TASTE.37 | AN HOMAGE TO THE WOLFPACK

THE HANGOVER CURE

| ingredients |

two lemons

seltzer water

one cup sugar

five tsp. red pepper flakes

one quarter tsp. salt

six inches of fresh ginger

peeled and chopped

| directions |

combine two cups of water

salt, ginger, sugar and red pepper flakes

in a pan over medium heat

slowly bring the mixture to a boil

and then reduce the heat and let

simmer for ten minutes

remove the pan from heat

and let it sit, covered, until cool

strain the syrup into a jar

and put it in the refrigerator to chill

fill a tall glass with ice

put two tbsp. of the spice ginger syrup

and the lemon wedges

into the glass

fill the rest of the glass

with soda water and stir

with a shot of whatever you

were drinking the

night before

(if you can stomach it)

Our niece is graduating from high school today and we could not be more proud of her. She is an exceptionally bright, kind, loving person who knows who she is and is not afraid to make her own choices. I have no doubt in my mind that what ever paths she chooses to travel down she will change them for the better. I promise, I'm not pulling the 'proud Aunt' card on this one, this girl truly gets it. Today will be a celebration of her accomplishments thus far but more importantly, a wonderful send off into this big, bright, world we live in.

If you have a graduate in your life this season, remind them how much they are loved, that you will always be there for them no matter what and it's their life to live and no one else's.

TASTE.36 | OLIVE OIL ICE CREAM

While it's a little difficult to find authentic Olive Oil ice cream outside of Italy it is not impossible to make thanks to Adventures in Cooking . It has the richest most distinct flavor that I now prefer it over coffee ice cream, and coffee ice cream is a flavor I've been devouring for over a decade. Olive Oil ice cream does not require an acquired taste---it's sweet, silky, and subtly fruity. The main ingredient is obviously finding the perfect olive oil. If it's extra virgin, aged, flavored or whatever suits your palette, it's your call. I believe this to be the beauty of the ice cream. It will suit you, not the other way around. If you happen to make it this summer, I'd love to hear if you enjoyed it or more importantly if you've ever experienced it in a small cafe off the Almalfi Coast? It was there that I first fell in love with this decadent dessert. I'm sure you will too. Enjoy!

| ingredients |

3 egg yolks, whisked in a medium sized bowl

2 cups of whole milk

1 cup of cream

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup olive oil

1/4 cup honey

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

| directions |

heat the milk, cream, sugar

honey and salt in a medium sized

tick bottomed saucepan

over low heat until the mixture

becomes hot, but not boiling

remove from heat and gradually

drizzle two cups of the mixture

into a bowl with the egg

yolks whisking constantly

once the two cups has been

incorporated, pour the egg yolk mixture

back into the saucepan, still whisking

place the pan onto the stove top

and cook over the lowest heat setting

whisking constantly, until the mixture

has thickened-remove from heat

and whisk in the olive oil and vanilla

extract until fluidly combined

allow to cool to room temperature

then cover and refrigerate overnight

per your ice cream machines directions

allow the ice cream to churn

until the mixture begins to freeze and thicken

freeze until ready to serve

I'm the first to admit that I will always be on the quest to find the perfect tee. Even though I tend to gravitate towards the brands I love, I'm totally open to trying new pieces. I'm loving the T by Alexander Wang because it's boyishly casual and not over priced. Especially the black tank, I think you could go either way with it by dressing it up or down. How adorable is this photo? What I would give to have a photo of my mother when she pregnant with me. If you happen to have one, cherish it. I think pregnant women are stunning--the glow, the belly, the hope of what is yet to be. It's so magical. As I mentioned in an earlier post this week, B & I have had the privilege of watching our close friends become parents over the past few years. Both to sons and daughters, the love they have for their children is deep and profound. I've always truly believed that our friends are fascinating individuals as well as beautiful couples. It is going to be an awe-inspiring process to watch the lovely children they've brought into this world grow into their own individuals through the years. We are looking forward to every minute of it and will celebrate the mothers that are now in our lives not just on Sunday, but every day we possibly can. Hope you do the same.

When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother has to think twice, once for your herself and once for her child.

GOOD ADVICE FOR YOUNG GIRLS

It's not a secret that Joanna Goddard from A Cup of Jo gives some of the best motherhood advice around. I've come to love her Motherhood Monday series because it is not only for mothers, it is for aunts, sisters, friends, fathers, brothers, uncles, grandparents and siblings. This post, on how to talk to young girls changed my entire interactions with my nieces, my friends daughters and every young girl I come across.

At first, it was a difficult shift because girls are precious. Their hair, their faces, their little clothes are downright adorable. Naturally you want to immediately say "you look so pretty" or "I love your dress, hair, outfit, shoes..." but this article teaches you how to speak to young girls about things other than their looks or their clothes. It's a thought provoking change of perception. In short, you should still give young girls compliments, it's just not the first thing you should say to them. We live in a society where only 4% of women are CEO's of Fortune 500 companies, the ratio of scientists is still 3 to 10 women to men and where women still struggle with body image. Something needs to change and this little piece of advice might be the very beginning of it. What are your thoughts on this? I'd love to know.

As you may know, I'm not a mother in the traditional sense. At least not yet. I'm a mother to a furry golden that I adore. However, due to the many wonderful mother's in this world, I don't believe there should only be one day dedicated to these wonderful women we know and love. My mother passed away when I was thirteen years old. She was a strong woman who was the center of our family. While tragic for a young girl, I was blessed with older sisters that were mothers themselves--and today I feel like I've been given a second chance at having a mother because of the mother-in-law my husband brought into my life. In addition, B& I have tremendous friends who have become mothers during the time we've been married and it's been a beautiful process to watch.

This week Fourth Street will be dedicated to mothers I've come to admire both near and far. Hope you enjoy the series as much as I've enjoyed putting it together.

This is a rather mixed message because it is Cinco de Mayo weekend (and my sister's birthday) so it's usually a big celebration period in our neck of the woods. However, with the weather finally inching towards constant spring temps I'm going to call a time out. May, June & July are always quite busy with graduations, weddings & vacations so I think this weekend we are just going to enjoy whatever comes our way. Maybe plant annuals, maybe take a bike ride, maybe linger at brunch on Sunday--who's in?

TASTE.36 | HANDMADE RAW VEGAN ICE CREAM BARS

Confession. About seven years ago I went vegan (cold turkey) and kept with it for three (long) years. It was a great learning experience for me in a nutritional aspect but in the end it was too strict for my personal taste. I know there are a lot of vegan lovers out there and for that I commend you. Due to this, I thought I'd dedicate one of the delicious recipes vegans (as well as others) could divulge in as we head into summer. These ice cream bars are yummy, highly nutritious and wonderful for the body. Enjoy!

Scrumptious Ice Cream Bars Brought to You by Veggie-Wedgie

| ingredients |

vanilla pudding ice cream base

six young coconuts

1/2 cup coconut water

1/2 cup agave nectar

1 teaspoon ground vanilla powder

| directions|

open coconuts and save water

for drinking. scrape out the soft meat

in a high speed blender combine the coconut

meat and water, agave and vanilla and blend

until you have a rich smooth cream

transfer in molds and freeze

for eight hours

| ingredients |

cacao chocolate shell

150 grams raw shaved cacao paste

1/2 cup coconut butter/oil

1/2 cup agave nectar

| directions |

place all ingredients in a double broiler

on medium heat and stir until

everything melts and comes together

ensure you don't overheat the chocolate

repeat the transfer directions above
