Gregory of Pegasus Fleet: An outstanding community member in all facets, Gregory is that ever-present figure who knows exactly when to lead and when to lift others up, often at the same time in subtle, but effective ways. A regular host and contributor at all four main conventions today, he leads interactive and provocative discussions, pushing our knowledge and understanding of the craft. He also regularly supports initiatives within his home club and other recurring events, like the Tournament of Simulations.

USS Hiroshima of Obsidian Fleet: A long-time sim with a 20+ year history, the Hiroshima recently reinvented itself with a flurry of exceptional collaboration and posting around a decade-long story arc. It perfectly balanced and blended outstanding classic and legacy player contributions with cutting edge additions from new players, creating a fresh and distinct, but still recognizable culture.

Federation Space: A forum-based club that recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, Federation Space does all the little things that allow a group to not just survive, but thrive long-term. The players complement each other perfectly, building on their existing culture and lore with new and inventive ideas in seemingly every joint post, which are a joy to read.

Shadow Fleet: A forum-based group founded in 2007, Shadow Fleet continues to sim to the max while also contributing to the greater community, like co-hosting the most recent Khitomer. With an exquisite academy and effective organization, players are able to tell stories together organically.
More information about The Simming Prize can be found at The Simming League.

The 64 outstanding nominations received from the community were evaluated, and now we have some winners! Before we announce those amazing games, in case anyone is unfamiliar with this program: the Tournament of Simulations (ToS) is an annual competition, sponsored and run by Ongoing Worlds, that is open to all sims and online role-playing games, regardless of format or genre.

This year’s tournament resulted in 26 unique winners. As it is seemingly every year, the participation and excellence displayed among the entire field is a true testament to the ongoing strength of our simming and online role playing community, despite the naysayers out there.

As I frequently remind myself and others: evaluating sims is a subjective art, and this is true with ToS. We’re not here to identify the best games as this is impossible. Instead, we’re here to identify what we think are outstanding sims that exude excellence. A different set of judges might very well chose a completely different set of winners. And that’s okay! If you’re interested, this is how we select the winners. With that on the record once again, here are your 2024 Tournament of Simulation winners:

Outstanding Original Sci-fi: YSS Resurgence of Star Army

Congratulations to all of our Tournament winners! Well done! Believe me when I say that there were some really, really good entrants this year that didn’t make the winners list. For that reason, I’d like to personally thank everyone who took the time to enter their games in the competition: Thank you for providing a fantastic role playing experience for your players–that was more than evident in ALL of the entries. And that’s really what it’s all about. The individual grade sheets have been emailed to each sim’s respective representative.

I would also like to acknowledge our outstanding panel of judges: Amanda Rose, Ametheliana, Blitzen, Christie, Edwina, Ennom, Greenfelt, Gregory, Hadir Prenar, Ken Gillis, Kevin Riker, Malcom Llwyedd, Matthew Desmond, Mel, Nikki, Raz. Rosie B, Shran dh’Klar, Spiral, StarDuster, and Willvoy. All 21 of them were amazing professionals from start to finish. They volunteered hours of their time to serve the simming and online role playing community, and I can’t thank them enough for the wonderful job they did!

OWCH

While we’re on the subject of judging, Amanda Rose, Ametheliana, Greenfelt, Ken Gillis, Raz, and Shran dh’Klar are hereby awarded the Ongoing Worlds Community Honor (OWCH) for serving as a judge in three different Tournament of Simulations. They have volunteered hours of their time to serve in this capacity. Their selflessness and volunteer attitude are an example for us all to follow. Without these six and others like them, we simply wouldn’t be able to hold major events like the Tournament. Thank you!

A few statistical notes…

This is the 14th year in a row that a tournament was held (2011-2024). Six tournaments were held 1999-2007. No tournaments were held 2008-2010. Twenty total tournaments have now been held to date.

Twenty-six awards were bestowed this year, tied with 2021 for the second most ever. The record of 36 awards was set in 2022. 316 total awards have now been conferred dating back to 1999.

Five clubs brought home multiple awards this year: Theta Fleet (7), Independence Fleet (4), Obsidian Fleet (4), RGWriting (2), and Star Army (2). All five are repeat winners from last year. The record for most awards in a single tournament is 10 (Starfleet Legacy Alliance, 2005). Starfleet Legacy Alliance also holds second place (9, 2006) and third place (8, 2007) in the category.

Independence Fleet (30) stays put at #2 on the all-time awards list with Theta Fleet (29) also closing the gap on all-time leader Starfleet Legacy Alliance (31). Rounding out the top 5 are Obsidian Fleet (20) and Star Army (20). RPGWriting finds itself tied with Bravo Fleet at #7 with total 13 awards.

Star Army extends its record of tournaments with at least one win to 12 (2012-20, 2023-24). Independence Fleet and UCIP are tied for second place with wins in nine different tournaments. Star Army additionally holds the record for most consecutive tournaments with at least one win (9, 2012-2020). RPGWriting has the longest active streak (6, 2019-current), with Independence Fleet, Theta Fleet, and Obsidian Fleet currently tied for second (5, 2020-current).

This was the 16th tournament to have a club pick up its first win (Mystic Fans). The only tournaments not have at least one club get their first win are 2001, 2013, 2017, and 2023.

Four independent sims won this year. The record of 11 was set in 2021. Independent sims were shutout in five tournaments (1999, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2020).

The following simulations that placed this year have won multiple awards:

USS Sunfire, 5 (2011, 2012, 2022, 2023, 2024)

Obsidian Command, 5 (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024)

USS Wayfarer, 5 (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024)

USS Black Hawk, 4 (2017, 2019, 2020, 2024)

YSS Kaiyō II, 4 (2017, 2019. 2020, 2024)

USS America, 3 (2021, 2022, 2024)

USS Pioneer, 3 (2021, 2022, 2024)

USS Washington, 3 (2021, 2022, 2024)

Dark Age of Aeran, 3 (2021, 2023, 2024)

X-Men: Avalon, 3 (2022, 2023, 2024)

USS Calypso, 2 (2020, 2024)

Faltan Station, 2 (2021, 2024)

USS Hiroshima, 2 (2022, 2024)

USS Midway, 2 (2022, 2024)

USS Myogi, 2 (2022, 2024)

USS Ermiana, 2 (2022, 2024)

The Order of The Moon, 2 (2023, 2024)

Power Rangers: Solar Force, 2 (2023, 2024)

USS Artemis, 2 (2023, 2024)

USS Firebird, 2 (2023, 2024)

YSS Resurgence, 2 (2023, 2024)

All results are final and are not subject to appeal. Look for the 2025 tournament to be announced very soon. Until then, continue the incredible simming and online role playing!

While the latest Tournament of Simulations has just gotten underway, the awards season never ends in simming and online role playing! Indeed, the Simming Prize (officially The Prize for Simming and Online Role Playing in Memory of Seth Cotis) is always accepting nominations using this form.

What is the Simming Prize, you might ask?

The Simming Prize

Well, it goes all the way back to 1999 (or thereabouts) when the Simming League formally launched the The Simming League Prize for Simming and Online Role Playing (or Simming Prize, for short). Modeled after the Nobel Prizes, Simming Prizes were awarded annually with one citation in each of these five categories: Internet Technology, Literature, Management, Peace, and Service. Those first winners included Alliance Simulation Group (ASG), Tashak, Ender Maki, Chas Hammer, RolePlayerUSA, the Star Trek Galactic Newsletter, and Trek Online.

While the five categories no longer exist, the Simming Prize remains alive today to honor those in the simming & online role playing community who exemplify service, quality, and dedication or who pioneer new technology or techniques. The Prize can recognize a significant one-time accomplishment or sustained contributions over a period of time. Individuals and entities who win a Prize are entitled to use the honorific Simming Prize Laureate.

Who is this Seth Cotis?

Seth Cotis was the founder of Starfleet Legacy Alliance (SLA) and a long-time leader within the Simming League. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2005. The League initially considered establishing a new award, the Seth Cotis Medal of Honor. However, they instead decided to rename the existing Simming Prize in his memory. We continue to honor his legacy today. Ametheliana of Star Army, Obsidian Command of Obsidian Fleet, and RPG Writing won Prizes for 2024.

What does it mean for you?

This is your chance to help us honor the best of the community! Nominate your club. Nominate your sim. Nominate yourself! To date, 116 Simming Prizes, through 108 citations, have been awarded to 105 different entities since those original 1999 Prizes. This is your chance to be a part of history as we celebrate our collective achievments.

Simming Prize Website

*****Simming Prize Nomination Form*****

Facebook | X | Discord

But wait, there’s more!

The Simming Prize isn’t the only award on the block. Yes, the Khitomer Peace Awards are accepting nominations for their latest cycle through July 31st. Check it out!

Now that the 2023 competition is in the books, it’s time for us to hold the next Tournament of Simulations (ToS): this tournament will feature entries from last year, 2024.

For those who might be unfamiliar with ToS, this is where you can enter your role play or sim to potentially win a prize at no cost or risk to you! Judges from across the community go through all of the entries and evaluate them on story, characters, and readability.

As has been our tradition for several years now, play-by-post games will be graded on 10 consecutive posts while chat games will be graded on a single chat session. All sims will be considered regardless of club or fleet affiliation. We then present awards to the top-scoring games. The sims that don’t place are not announced. That’s right: you’ve got nothing to lose, so why not enter?

Okay, enough on that. How about we get on with the nominations…

First, read this article: How Does the Tournament of Simulations (ToS) Work?

The nominations were received and evaluated, and now we have some winners! Before we announce those amazing sims, in case anyone is unfamiliar with this program, the Tournament of Simulations (ToS) is an annual competition, sponsored and run by Ongoing Worlds, that is open to all sims and online role-playing games, regardless of format or genre.

This year we had 60 unique entrants, which resulted in 23 different winners. As it is seemingly every year, the participation and excellence displayed is a true testament to the ongoing strength of our simming and online role playing community, despite the naysayers.

As I frequently remind myself and others: evaluating sims is a subjective art, and this is certainly true with ToS. We’re not here to identify the best games as this is impossible. Instead, we’re here to identify what we think are outstanding sims that exude excellence. A different set of judges might very well chose a completely different set of winners. And that’s okay! If you’re interested, this is how we select the winners. With that on the record once again, here are your 2023 Tournament of Simulation winners:

Play-by-Chat

None this cycle!

Congratulations to all of our Tournament winners! Well done! Believe me when I say that there were some really, really good entrants that didn’t make the winners list this year.

I would also like to acknowledge our outstanding panel of judges: Amanda Rose, Ametheliana, Avakhon Khinsharri, Christie, Ennom, Greenfelt, Gregory, Hadir Prenar, Joseph Carroll, Ken Gillis, Kevin Riker, Malcom Llwyedd, Matthew Desmond, Nikki, Nugra, Raz, Rosie B, Spiral, StarDuster, Willvoy, and Wizardbeard. All 21 of them were amazing professionals from start to finish. They volunteered hours of their time to serve the simming and online role playing community, and I can’t thank them enough for the wonderful job they did!

While we’re on the subject of judging, Avakhon Khinsharri, Gregory, Kevin Riker, Matthew Desmond, Nikki, and StarDuster are hereby awarded the Ongoing Worlds Community Honor (OWCH) for serving as a judge in three different Tournament of Simulations. They have volunteered hours of their time to serve in this capacity. Their selflessness and volunteer attitude are an example for us all to follow. Without these six and others like them, we simply wouldn’t be able to hold major events like the Tournament. Thank you!

A few statistical notes…

This is the 13th year in a row that a tournament was held (2011-2023). Six tournaments were held 1999-2007. No tournaments were held 2008-2010. Nineteen total tournaments have been held to date.

Twenty-three awards were bestowed this year, tying 2020 for the fourth most ever.
USF (short for United Space Federation) officially marked its 30th anniversary back in January. One of the oldest clubs still in existence today, they continue to thrive in their chat-based format literally decades after their 1995 launch. To celebrate, they are inviting the entire community to an open house:

And You’re invited!

When: Saturday, March 8th and Sunday, March 9th

Where: The USF Main Discord channel in the Anniversary rooms.

Time: 11 AM EST through to 8 PM EST with an hour break both days

Why: It’s a chance to help USF celebrate its 30 years of simming and to have a lot of fun too! See you there!

*** USF Discord Invite ***

Totally rad 1996 starfield background!

The United Space Federation was founded by early simming legend Andy B. Clements. As far as we can tell, this was the second group that Clements founded. According to the Timeline of Simming, Clements created the Federation and Klingon Alliance (FKA) in late 1993, but left in late 1994 with his sim USS Excelsior to eventually launch the United Space Federation. It should be noted, however, that not all early sources reference the Clements/FKA connection.

Regardless, Clements and his team not only masterfully used AOL message boards, the leading solution of the day, but the chat format they instituted continues to thrive in an entirely different environment today. Indeed, USF was awarded the 2020 Simming Prize for their exquisite use of chat role playing after almost all of the Star Trek community had moved to the play-by-post model:

A true unicorn in the community today, USF still focuses mainly on chat-based role playing while almost all others exist exclusively in the play-by-post arena. The unique style is just as fresh as ever while remaining true to its AOL roots and 1995 founding. Their longevity is a living testament to the community atmosphere, and their dedication to the craft that is evident in each chat session.
Congratulations to the latest Simming Prize Winners

Discord is King!

Not only is Discord a central hub for many of today’s simming and online role playing groups, but it’s also home to many recruiting specific servers:

Ametheliana of Star Army: The consummate team player, Ametheliana does all the little things behind the scenes to make things work while never seeking credit or the limelight herself. A member of Star Army for years, she has hosted various sims and supported many others. She has also worked tirelessly within the greater community at the Tournament of Simulations, Ongoing Worlds, and multiple conventions–ensuring that they all went off without a hitch, allowing others to take the glory.

Obsidian Command of Obsidian Fleet: A high-quality and prolific sim, Obsidian Command has done it all. Boasting three Tournament of Simulations awards, including the top overall prize at the 2022 competition, and multiple awards from her home club, including for outstanding mission and outstanding creativity, the sim is widely recognized for its excellence by all who analyze it. The richness of its characters and the originality of its episodes serve as the foundation for making this sim one for the ages.

RPG Writing: A long-time club that reformed several years ago after a brief hiatus, RPG Writing has lived up to its mission to serve as a multi-genre haven for players to write creatively. Through a robust, but not constraining set of bylaws, they have instituted the perfect environment to foster maximum imagination without needless drama. RPG Writing has been so successful that other groups have begun to imitate their model–both the administrative and being multi-genre–a true testament to their effectiveness.
More information about The Simming Prize can be found at The Simming League.

2022

Ken Gillis of Independence Fleet: With an illustrious career spanning decades in multiple groups and roles, the breadth of his accomplishments is unrivaled. From both his and simming’s early days as founder of Pi Fleet, Administrator of RolePlayerUSA, and the 11th President of the Simming League to more recently as Executive Officer of Independence Fleet, Chair of FallFest, and serving as a board member at multiple organizations, his selfless efforts to positively impact to the broader community are exactly what we need today.

DFA Cromwell of Star Trek: Borderlands: A long-running sim that has been a pillar of its fleet for many years, it consistently produced outstanding and creative role playing with high activity while also being extremely welcoming to new players with little or no experience. The backdrop of its extensive lore provides a firm foundation to continue building both community and story. The result is a game that develops and progresses effortlessly and organically.

USS Potemkin: To Boldly Roll of Obsidian Fleet: A new sim that has revolutionized the concept of online role playing, it combines aspects of a traditional play-by-post game with an entertaining and downright hilarious podcast. Even more, it has balanced being an extremely fun sim to be a part of as a player while simultaneously providing an interesting and engaging experience for non-members to listen to. The innovation of achieving excellence in two different sectors that come together flawlessly as one is something to behold.
More information about The Simming Prize can be found at The Simming League.

2023

Lunar Veil: A Firefly Tale: An outstanding game in all respects with excellence in both story and characters, it has stayed true to the Firefly universe while also pushing creative boundaries for players to explore new ideas collaboratively. It was previously recognized at three Tournaments of Simulation (2018, 2019, and 2021) and featured in the penultimate episode of the role playing game show The Simming Endeavor. If there is a sim that has hit its goal and more, this is it.

USS Pandora of Theta Fleet: Active since 2020, it has perfected everything that goes into making a great role playing game: character development, story depth, and excellent pacing coming together to tell compelling Star Trek adventures. Unsurprisingly, it was recognized with an Outstanding award at the 2020 Tournament of Simulations. Crewmembers describe it as the best sim they have ever been a part of, and from the outside looking in, it is not hard to see why.

Pegasus Fleet: A club that began in 2009, it has been the model of cohesion and excellence. Fostering outstanding games while also hosting engaging internal and external community events on the regular has allowed it to thrive while other similar groups have gone through significant periods of instability. In addition, it was one of the key driving groups behind the Khitomer Conference, one of the premier community events of the day. Always putting members first, it provides a fantastic model for others to emulate.
More information about The Simming Prize can be found at The Simming League.
