AGFA brings Hydmedia Electronic Content Management to Canada

Agfa HealthCare has announced that it is launching Hydmedia Electronic Content Management (ECM) system for healthcare organizations, into the Canadian market. Hydmedia is an an HL7 standards based solution that digitally archives healthcare information, including paper-based documents, laboratory data, images and any kind of electronic documents, to provide a single view of the clinical and administrative record. Currently it is installed in 350 hospitals word wide, primarily in Europe. Details of the Canadian launch can be found the the Agfa website here.

Saskatchewan invests $3.6 million in primary healthcare innovation

The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $3.6 million to fuel innovation in primary healthcare services. Details of the initiate are available here. To assist in this effort, the government has also released an overview guide called the Primary Care Framework Report which is available for download here. The report is a result of extensive public consultation including the Patient First Review completed in 2009.

UHN’s (University Health Network) Centre for Innovation in Complex Care has developed a clinical messaging application that streamlines communication on medical wards. Clinicians can quickly lookup who is part of a patient’s care team, communicate and collaborate with colleagues without having to result to paging or over head paging. The application will eventually be rolled out to patients to allow them to see who exactly is treating them and provide feedback on their own health and care as well. The White House is taking Healthcare mobile

In the US President Barack Obama has issued a directive that will see two key government services provided by the Department of Health and Human Services made available on mobile phones within the next 12 months. This corresponds with the larger US trend towards open data initiatives and “anytime / anywhere / any device” in Healthcare. A more detailed outline of the directive is available HealthcareITNews.

Niagara Health Restructuring interim report released

Niagara Health Restructuring – Dr. Kevin Smith Supervisor for the Niagara Health System has released his Interim Report on Restructuring of the Niagara Health System for consultation before submission to the Minister in June 2012. His recommendations include building a new acute care hospital as well as a new Urgent Care clinic in South Niagara and an Academic Health Centre in partnership with McMaster University, Brock University and Niagara College. He also recommends that a new skills based board be formed with an immediate priority to conduct a search for a new CEO for the Health System as well as the completion of a new overall strategic plan. Cerner Canada Regional User Group

The Canada RUG is a forum for Canadian users of Cerner solutions.

In 1995, some of Cerner’s Canadian clients wished they could meet together to discuss the changes that they were all faced with, including more computers that were making their way into the hospitals. It was a scary, but exciting change that was happening all across Canada.

London Health Services invited 15 people to gather in a small meeting room at St. Joseph’s Hospital to discuss such topics. North York General Hospital, Toronto East General Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospitals were all very active participants.

Since then, we have grown into a ‘Family of Users’ called the Cerner Canadian Regional User Group (RUG). This group meets annually, with as many as 350 attendees. Other benefits to attending the annual conference:

The Value of a Health Information Exchange

In Nov 2010 InformationWeek, published a Strategy Report in the development of over 200 Health Information Exchanges(HEI) in the US. A HEI ensure that all those providing care to a patient have the most up to date and comprehensive information possible in a secure manner. The expected results being: faster decision making for the patient, fewer duplicate tests and the improvement in patient safety particularly as it applies medication errors. Initial push back from physicians is fading as they begin to see the value and convenience of the technology.

In Canada the forward thinking of our Governments, put Canada Health Infoway in place close to 10yrs ago, with the goal that patient information could be shared with providers, as required, first locally or regionally and ultimately pan-Canadian.

The two countries may use different terms, but the goals are the same. Improve the delivery of care by securely sharing required patient with care providers and/or physicians.

Based on surveys down by HIMSS Analytics, the chart below shows that we in Canada are behind the US, but making progress.

Contrary to what many would believe the best progress in Canada is happening in the Maritimes. New Brunswick is leading the country. Why? This province is smaller both in geography and population which allows them to collaborate and work together differently than some of the larger provinces.
