At RNFOO's annual Gala on May 2nd, 2012 in Toronto, the recipients of the ONIG Award were recognized for their achievements in informatics. Congratulations to both Julie and Kristine for winning the 2012 Ontario Nursing Informatics Group (ONIG) awards!! Their respective bios can be found below.

Julie Kwan

Throughout her career, Julie has worked in hospital, long-term care, community, complex continuing care and government settings, always fully supporting safety and quality improvement initiatives. Her area of specialty is facilitating change by integrating clinical informatics with best practice, which has shown to improve delivery of patient care and enhance the work life of nurses. Julie is interested in leading future quality initiatives, with hopes that she will have a positive impact on the health of all Ontarians. While working full- time and raising two young children, Julie also works towards obtaining her Master of Nursing at the University of Toronto.

Kristine Newman

Kristine is presently a PhD Nursing Candidate at the University of Toronto working with Dr. Diane Doran. Her background is in professional practice, nursing education, rehabilitation nursing and she currently holds her CNA certification in Rehabilitation Nursing. Kristine also has interests in nursing education, knowledge translation and informatics.

ONIG's Linkedin presense

With the growing need to maintain an online presence, ONIG has recently created a group profile on Linkedin! Much to this webmaster's surprise, two ONIG members joined the group within minutes of its creation on Linkedin last month.

Over the last few years, ONIG has received numerous requests for information and questions/queries related to informatics/eHealth from both ONIG members and non-members alike. Some of the common topics fielded have included requesting advice regarding policies/procedures, technology upgrades, and many other informatics-related subject matter. Similarly, we have also noted a substantive increase in the number of students and nurses requesting “further information on how to become involved in health informatics.” Although ONIG has typically informally addressed specific questions to the best of our abilities, we have never had a usable platform from which to ‘share’ these recommendations and ideas with the larger informatics community.

We feel the Linkedin presence will provide us the ability to continue to share ideas and recommendations, but in a fashion that allows others to learn too. As a relatively small community of practice, the more we can share, the further informatics can be embedded into the care of clients and consumers. In essence, if you have a question about informatics, try posting it to the Linkedin page! You never know who will respond.

Therefore, I encourage all ONIG members who have a Linkedin account to join the ONIG Linkedin Group and participate in any conversations you feel would be valuable for the informatics community at large. Similarly, any direct requests send to ONIG for specific information will be posted to the Linkedin page (with the sender's permission of course) so that the larger community of the Internet can comment and provide recommendations.

*The list of candidates will be posted on the ONIG website from January 31 – February 16, 2012. Elections will take place electronically during this period and results will be announced at the Annual General Meeting.

ONIG promotes the awareness and value of nursing’s contribution to quality health care through health data, information and knowledge management enabled by the use of technology. Your talent, expertise and passion for informatics will ensure ONIG continues to grow and thrive.

For the 2012 year, ONIG is seeking nominees for Treasurer, Education, Secretary, and Membership Directors. All positions are two year terms. Position descriptions are available on the ONIG website.

Qualifications for Office
Any person nominated to an elected Board position shall be a Registered Nurse, a member of RNAO and ONIG, and shall continue to be such so long as the nurse holds office.

Each Director of ONIG shall:
•    Have informatics experience,
•    Be currently working in the field,
•    Have the capacity to contribute to the development of information technology solutions that support quality health care,
•    Be available to attend, a majority of the regularly scheduled meetings, in person or by conference phone call, at least one face to face meeting and at least two education days per year,
•    Be supported by their employer (i.e., able to meet the expectations of the role)

Do you want to shape ONIG’s vision and mission? As a member of your professional interest group, you can put forward resolutions for ratification at ONIG’s annual general meeting, which takes place on Friday, February 17, 2012.

By submitting resolutions, you are giving ONIG a mandate to speak on behalf of all its members within the interest group itself as well as within the larger RNAO community.

Important to note:

• the resolution must bear the signature(s) of an ONIG member(s) in good standing for 2012.
• a maximum one-page backgrounder must accompany each resolution. This one page is to INCLUDE references, and the font used must be no smaller than Arial 10 or Times New Roman 11. Margins on this one page must also be reasonable, e.g. an absolute minimum of 0.7” all around.
• all resolutions will be reviewed by the ONIG Executive

For clarity of purpose and precision in the wording of your resolution, we recommend that each resolution include no more than three ‘Whereas’; and preferably only one, but never more than two,

‘Therefore Be It Resolved.’ Please refer to the following successful 2011 RNAO resolution for guidance:

WHEREAS technology use within clinical settings is increasing at a rapid pace; and
WHEREAS clinician workflow is unique and complex; and
WHEREAS there is a current lack of formal education within the sphere of Clinical Informatics as part of undergraduate education curricula;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that ONIG advocate to the Ministry of Education for a comprehensive interdisciplinary provincial education strategy be implemented requiring undergraduate degrees in all disciplines include at least one credit course on Clinical Informatics.
