British artist Tony Cragg unveiled a new die covered sculpture at FIAC 2011 in Paris last week (top three images). Cragg has created a number of organic figures using dice over the past several years as seen above, and you can see a few more here. Visionary Tony Fadell who, back in the day, was in charge of the iPod at Apple *just* launched a brand new product called Nest. It’s a incredibly sexy looking thermostat that learns as you use it and, in the end, helps you save money.

10% of all U.S. energy is controlled by thermostats. That’s the equivalent of 1.7 billion barrels of oil per year. But in most homes the thermostat is an unassuming beige box. It doesn’t matter if it’s a manual or complicated programmable thermostat,we do with it what we’ve always done: get up, walk over to it, and change the temperature. Every few hours. Rain Drum Umbrella. Makes music out of rain drops.

From designer Dong Min Park comes a concept that makes rainy days a little less dreary.

The Rain Drum features mounted sound inputs on the exterior of an umbrella top that make different drum noises when raindrops touch it. The shade of the umbrella contains five wax-cloth made coverings with varying elasticities to create a range of tones and frequencies, depending on the size and speed of the falling rain drop.

The Associated Press reports that Isaacson's book, titled simply "Steve Jobs," jumped quickly to number 1 on Amazon and to the top five on Barnes & Noble.com on Wednesday, after Apple's announcement that Jobs had died.
According to the publisher, Simon & Schuster, "Steve Jobs" is based on more than 40 interviews Isaacson conducted with Jobs over two years, as well as interviews with family, friends and foes. From the Press release:
Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

The Guardian reports that Isaacson last met with Jobs a few weeks ago, an encounter he details in a piece Time magazine will publish on October 17:
...Isaacson recalls finding Jobs curled up in pain in a downstairs bedroom at his home in Palo Alto, California. Jobs told the writer he was too weak to climb the stairs to his old room. But, Isaacson says, "his mind was still sharp and his humour vibrant".
Meanwhile, Sony Corp.'s movie studio is finalizing a deal to acquire the film rights to "Steve Jobs," the AP reports.

This will be either the most overhyped piece of camera technology in modern times or the start of something revolutionary. (I’m hoping it’s the later.) About four months ago, Lytro announced that they were building a consumer digital camera that claimed it will be the biggest technological jump since we started talking megapixels over 20 years ago.The pocket-sized camera provides new capabilities never seen before, allowing you to focus on a picture after it’s taken. How? A light field camera captures light all throughout the scene in front of the lens, as opposed to the cameras consumers are used to, which bring a particular part into focus.

As Steve Lohr from The New York Times says, “For a photographer, whether amateur or professional,
the Lytro technology means that the headaches of focusing a shot go away.”

The Lytro light field camera is accompanied by Lytro’s desktop application, a free software download that easily imports pictures from camera to computer. Currently available for Mac OS X, the desktop application lets people view, interact with, organize and share their light field pictures. Lytro pictures can then be uploaded to Lytro.com to be shared via Facebook, Twitter, blogs, or as links in email messages. Microscopic artist Dalton Ghetti spends up to two-and-a half years painstakingly crafting each handmade piece on the graphite of a pencil. Mr Ghetti, who works as a carpenter, has been working with pencils for about 25 years and his stunning sculptures include Elvis, the entire alphabet, linking chains and even an entire church which is just 10mm tall.

MINI has unveiled retro-futuristic conceptual model of electric-powered scooter called MINI E Scooter Concept. This concept shares traditional MINI design: these are typical large speedometers and oval mirrors, square rear lights and chrome inserts. There will be possibility to store power on lithium-ion batteries, use electric motors built into the rear wheels, and accept charge via retractable leads in the back. If this concept will get positive feedback from public and experts at the 2010 Paris Motor Show the mass production of MINI Scooter will not take long.

BMW revealed in 2008 the GINA light visionary model concept car, an innovative new exploration in car design, instead of the traditional steel and plastic body shell, the GINA concept uses a textile fabric starches over a wire frame. This unique idea allows the car’s skin to change shape, stretching to match the position and curve of the wire frame. this idea is demonstrated in the ‘blinking’; headlights and the flexibility of the car doors as they open. Tineke : 'The world of adults furniture and the world children's toys don't seem to belong together.
From my childhood I remember it was always exiting to combine these two. I used the woodcarvings of furniture as a playfield for my puppets, to play in a new world. With this feeling in mind we created a concept for a new piece of furniture.
We invented these functional woodcarvings. It is decoration you can play with. They applied woodcarvings in a piece of furniture that combines the world of adults with the world of the children. A marble track in a table. A new type of functional woodcarving, that invites you to play... Ontwerpduo.

It’s just a simple toss to a full panoramic photo with this yet to be released ball camera.Determined with a built in accelerometer, the super cool images (including an image of the thrower/photographer) are captured at the peak of its flight giving an aerial view of the world. The devise uses 36 mobile phone cameras to take the image at one instant, making capturing moving objects a possibility not seen in many other panoramic methods.
