Ascendant: The Person-As-Presented

The Ascendant, also known as the persona in psychology astrology is always innately fascinating to learn about. Perhaps being born with Saturn rising, a heavy mask, it is the reason that I can completely identify with how it functions in the horoscope.

The word persona means the person-as-presented and it represents the outer layer of an individual that we show the world. It is sometimes unfairly called a mask as if we have no relation whatsoever to our outer appearance and behaviour and they are not associated with the personality. The Ascendant is the initial presentation of the individual adopted to serve specific purposes. If we delve deep into the psychological elements that make up the persona we find that its intended use is a self-protective measure to play a role in society, and keep a kind of barrier to the interior self, and also - the shadow. Jung would equate the persona with hiding parts of the psyche, but also we can hide our sense of uniqueness. To see the persona in action one only has to observe an individual closely, under changing surroundings, to see a transformation from one milieu to another which brings about a sudden change in personality. The person believes that the interior parts of the psyche will be rejected, and wears an extra layer of skin that protects the inner-self.

We can hide multiple sins behind a mask, like the man who is all smiles in the street and is a picture of an easy-going individual; only to turn into a mean drunk that hardly speaks to anyone at home. In psychology, character is situation, and the Ascendant serves as an important vehicle as we need something reliable when entering into social situations. According to Jung there is this extreme sensitivity that human beings have to expectations, and sometimes we adjust ourselves to the flow of the mainstream. Liz Greene says, all the four angles of the horoscope are “related to the inward and outward flow of the reality of the person to the outside world. The Ascendant is the most personal and obvious and must be in accord with the more hidden, unconscious aspects of the psyche.”

As Greene notes, the qualities of the Ascendant are not merely superficial, but represent qualities we would ideally like to be. In summary, the Ascendant is the role we play, and considering this aspect of the personality, we may begin to question the true face of any individual. We all have many depths and we spend a lifetime discovering, uncovering and realizing who we are. We don this mask when we enter into particular situations such as schools, workplaces and events. Over time, it becomes this habitual thing, and as soon as we step out of the front door we clothe ourselves in this particular behaviour as expressed by our Ascendant. We all know cases when the mask slips and a person suffers from a ‘loss of face’ in public. The individual feels quite embarrassed to have some of his more personal contents on show.

The Ascendant has to remain functional, and the mask has to be one that we can easily slip off without overly identifying with it. The Ascendant is that side of the self that faces out into the social world and isn’t wholly representative of our true inner identity.

Mars in Libra

Mars, the traditional ruling planet of persistent Scorpio, works with a lighter hand in Libra. There's less pushing, shoving or ultimatums during this transit. So while the pressure from Saturn in Scorpio is to draw a line in the sand and refuse to budge, the call of Mars in mellow Libra is to meet others halfway. Does that mean that we have to abandon the hard earned emotional truths of the Full Moon in Scorpio and settle for a life less satisfying? Mars is the planet of action. It represents initiative, aggression and the ways in which we push ahead. On October 7 it flung itself into adventurous Sagittarius , where the sky is the limit. This visionary Fire sign is aimed toward the future and faraway places, stretching our boundaries and our physical capacities along the way. Impulsive Mars' presence there tends to increase restlessness and the inclination to take risks. Dealing with the myriad details of daily life may become more difficult during its six-week transit of Sagittarius, and it encourages an optimistic way of behaving that might not always correspond with reality. Mars is the planet of go and Saturn is the planet of stop. The ringed planet also changed signs this month, entering scrutinizing Scorpio on October 5. Astrologically, at the root of depression, I believe, is a starving Moon. If your natal lunar needs are not being met then the rest of your horoscope has a difficult time functioning. I have always said this to my clients and have found it to be true over and over again. The Moon is our instinctive feeling nature. It's where we feel safest, most nourished, and nurtured. The Moon represents the deepest needs we have as individuals.

Stifle someone's Moon and you're stifling their emotional well-being. PERIOD.

I'm going through a mild postpartum depression episode these days, my friends. No, I didn't just have a baby. I did, however, recently take home a three month old puppy. Unless you've been through postpartum depression, you may not relate to the feelings of sadness that accompany what is supposed to be such an incredibly joyful event. I did suffer through postpartum depression with the birth of my first child, almost sixteen years ago. It was one of the darkest times of my life and I don't ever want to go there again.

At the root of my depressive episodes is always a starving Moon. I was born with the Moon in Sagittarius, in the 8th House of Depth and Transformation. My Moon is closely conjunct Neptune, square my 12th house Jupiter in Pisces, and trine my 12th house Venus in Aries.

In English? With the Moon in Sagittarius my overwhelming need is to have freedom of movement to expand my horizons, pursue the deeper meaning of life, and experience adventures. I also need to spread my wisdom on deep psychological (8th house) and metaphysical matters (Sagittarius) so that I might heal (8th house) and inspire others (Sagittarius). The Moon next to Neptune and square Jupiter in Pisces in the 12th house speaks to my deep, over-exaggerated need for alone time and privacy; for peace. And the trine to Venus helps me experience pockets of joy in those moments of helping to heal the suffering of others.

Making space

With the birth of my son I was suddenly put in this prison that is otherwise known as motherhood. I realize it's a dramatic statement for some to read but please, understand my needs and my visceral reaction. I felt that all of my freedom was suddenly gone. That I would never again have the time or peace and quiet or personal space to pursue the interests that fed my soul.

It had nothing to do with loving my son. I loved him with all of my soul. But it had everything to do with not being able to blend my new life of chaotic motherhood with getting my lunar needs met. I would nurse my son and look at him so peaceful and I would cry. I would cry because I felt very much at the time that making sure he had all of his needs met came at the sacrifice of my own needs.

It took time but after about eight months the depression went away. I adjusted to motherhood and I found ways to feed my Moon in little ways. What really helped me was that my ex-mother-in-law would watch my son for me for a few hours each week so I could have my "alone time" and do whatever I needed to in order to nourish my soul. My Moon. Having the freedom to go out without the shackles of baby stuff was really all I needed at the time.

Nourish yourself

And here I am now, with this little adorable puppy, feeling a lot like I felt all those years ago. The difference? Now I know Astrology and I know exactly what I need to do in order to make sure the depression doesn't get worse.

For the puppy, for my children and most importantly, for myself I have to feed my Moon. Are you a caregiver? Then remember to put your oxygen mask on first. Otherwise, how can you take care of anyone else?

When You're Going Through Hell, Keep Going

Right now, if you're a Mutable sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) then you're the winner of aNeptune in Pisces and Saturn in Sagittarius transit. And if you're a Cardinal sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn), you have the simultaneous transit of Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn.

When I consult with my clients, or even look around the lives of my own family members, I see the fascinating difference that each type of outer planetary transit has in their world. The common theme is change through developmental tension, ultimately leading to personal growth. For each outer planet that transits something vital in your horoscope, it can feel like you're going through the muck. I'm reminded of the famous Winston Churchill quote these days more than ever:

"When you're going through hell, keep going."

Easier said than done, right? And yet, we humans are a resilient bunch. We can take so much pressure from the outside world -- and even from our own creation -- and not only manage to survive, but thrive.

Even hell has an end

What resonates most about this quote as I apply it to astrological cycles is the reminder that even hell has an ending. Eventually, you'll get out and come to the other side of pain. Eventually, you'll see the light again. Yet the only way to ensure that is to keep going through the darkness.

While it's true that every outer planetary transit to your horoscope has the commonality of morphing your world through a series of stressful circumstances, it's important to note that each outer planet has a very different style, or modus operandi, with which he accomplishes this.

I thought it might be helpful to briefly clarify the differences so that when you or someone you know experiences a transit, you'll have an idea of how the specific outer planet goes about achieving his mission.

What Saturn transits can teach

Saturn transits change through restrictive, limiting and sometimes overbearing circumstances. Saturn is also discipline, responsibility and authority. There are many different ways in which this can happen. Let's say you're having a Saturn transit to your 10th House of Career. This angle of the chart is concerned with your status in life, your professional goals and ambitions, and authority figures in your world.

When Saturn comes to this point in your horoscope (and we all get this transit about once every 29 years) it can either be an incredible career pinnacle, where you're recognized as the authority in your industry, or it can be a time of drudgery, where, in the eyes of the boss, your best is never good enough.

The positive end of this transit uses the most illuminative qualities of Saturn to help you master your goals. The shadow is felt as roadblock after roadblock as you work ferociously to get your name out there. Either way Saturn crystalizes what he touches. That's how he teaches.

Uranus can shake you awake

What if Uranus was transiting the same angle in your chart? Uranus is the great awakener of the zodiac. He presents radical change in our life in the most sudden, unexpected way. When transiting Uranus crosses your 10th house you can expect sudden opportunity in career or a sudden change in status (going from married to divorced or divorced to married are examples).

This is also a time of waking up to what liberates you in terms of your life direction and following it. Uranus teaches by destabilizing what it touches, forcing us to accommodate to these shifts and get in touch with our brilliance.

Neptune transits point to gain through loss

How about good old Neptune? Neptune dissolves what it touches. When you have a Neptune transit, something -- or someone -- tends to slip through your fingers. This can also be a time of tremendous idealism because of the extraordinary spiritual component of Neptune.

A transit of Neptune to your 10th house can result in a major ego loss professionally or personally. There might be a scandal involving you that obliterates your reputation if you have been going down an unsavory path. Alternatively, this might be a time you decide to follow your imaginative career goals and pursue that opportunity in music, film, photography or the healing arts.

What will disappear during this transit is your attachment to the status in life you held before Neptune arrived. Neptune transits teach us by softening us up enough to allow illumination in.

Surrendering to planet Pluto

And then there's Pluto. This planet, more than any other, likes it in hell. He is, after all, the God of the underworld. When you're having a Pluto transit you know it because the pain you endure can be brutal. Pluto teaches through elimination. He kills off what you no longer need -- what is actually impeding you from soul growth.

The more you fight Pluto on this, the harder your transit will be. Do yourself a favor and when Pluto comes calling, prepare to surrender. You're only job during a Pluto transit is to accept the transformation. Even if it hurts. Especially when it hurts.
Pluto is the planet of power, and if he happens to transit your 10th house you can either arrive at an incredible position of power (sometimes notoriety) professionally, or you can fall from a position of power if you've been abusing your clout.

Either way, Pluto teaches you that with great power comes great responsibility and if you're not using it for the greater good, when he transits your 10th house he's going to rip it right away.

Planets as Teachers: Jupiter

Jupiter is the planet of good fortune, and it was called the "Greater Benefic" in the ancient world. It represents expansion and opportunity. Those blessed by its position in their birth charts or by the passing influence of its cycles were considered to be favored by the gods.

Jupiter is the largest of all the true planets, more massive than all the rest of them combined. And, in fact, Jupiter is lucky for the Earth because its enormous gravitational field captures many of the asteroids, meteors and other space objects that would otherwise crash into and damage our planet.

Jupiter is associated with philosophy and what is called the higher mind. It's not the data collector, which is little Mercury's role, but the synthesizer of information that weaves together a sense of meaning or truth. It is a planet of belief systems and religion, which represent our highest intellectual values.

Jupiter's judgmental dark side

Yet in its role as arbiter of truth, Jupiter can show its dark side, which is being judgmental. When beliefs are over-inflated, the generosity of Jupiter takes a position of moral authority and can put down others like a hell and damnation preacher. When we over inflate the importance of our ideas and interpret them as absolute truths, we kill kindness with condemnation. Compassion and curiosity are remedies to becoming paralyzed by a heavy-handed belief system that infects faith with rejection and punishment.

The good fortune that Jupiter is associated with comes from having a wider perspective. It looks up from the details of daily activities to see patterns that give meaning to what we do. The difficulties of the challenges we face do not necessarily disappear from this point of view, but they are recognized as pieces rather than the whole of our lives.

In practical terms, Jupiter reminds us to step back from situations in which we are entangled so that we can recognize how we became enmeshed in them and, hopefully, show us how we can untie these knots.

A giant symbol of hope

Jupiter is also about optimism and hope, which can help us through the toughest of times. If you're feeling blue, doing this planet's walk is a way to invite its expansive spirit into your body. Simply lengthen your stride by an inch. That's it. Doing this opens the body, expands your walk and mimics the boundless nature of Jupiter. Inviting more space into your life on a physical level is a direct expression of this planet's openness to greater possibilities.

And remember, when you're down, look up and the world will open to a larger space in which your purpose and possibilities grow.

Mercury Retrograde in Gemini Horoscopes

's that time again! From May 18 until June 11, 2015, Mercury, the planet of communication, commerce, and transportation, will be retrograde. This time Mercury will retrograde in one of the signs it rules: chatty, social Gemini. As a result, it's possible that the usual Mercury Retrograde mishaps might become more of a nuisance!

In particular, if you have anything going on communication-wise that involves writing, speaking, teaching, or learning, this might be a time when you're better off reviewing your work and double-checking your sources even more than usual. Remember that after Mercury turns direct, whatever communications-related project you have going on will likely shine due to the work you put into it now.

Since Mercury and Gemini are also connected to siblings and your neighborhood, watch out for misunderstandings between you and a brother or sister or neighbor. Do your best to avoid making a vital decision about any situation connected to you and any of these people in your life.

The above study speaks of an important aspect when entering into a full-time relationship and it is the 8th house arena where our emotions are just as heightened, our intensity levels are raised, and where the actual monster may be our other half. The 8th house is where we unleash our psychological problems, and the game-playing that happens is a substitute for real intimacy, it is the place where unresolved childhood issues burst through in the heat of an argument, and we say nasty things that once said have changed the relationship forever. Wiser folks believe that opening up our soul to someone, letting them into on our thoughts, fears; feelings is what it feels like to be really naked. Intimacy is familiarity, closeness, a private place for two people to exchange love and that’s what being unclothed really means, stripping down to our primary emotional selves, and that is the real turn-on. RETURN OF SATURN IN SCORPIO JUNE 14 – SEPTEMBER 17, 2015

Saturn reenters the sign of Scorpio from Sunday, June 17 at 7:36 P.M. until Thursday, September 17 at 9:49 P.M. Saturn first entered Scorpio October 5, 2012 and stayed there until December 23, 2014, when it left Scorpio for Sagittarius. Most of us felt a weight lifted off us once Saturn entered Sagittarius; the transit of Saturn through Scorpio was brutal, seemed extraordinarily long, and left ruin in its wake. Saturn turned retrograde (when a planet appears to travel backwards and retraces its steps) on March 14 and is currently working its way back to the war zone of Scorpio.

Down and Dirty
