Protect Tiny Fish, Support Sustainable Oceans!

You many never have heard of sand lance or saury, but these tiny fish play a critical position in the middle of the marine food web. Right now, many species of prey fish are unprotected, allowing new fisheries to spring up before the science is in place to manage them sustainably.

Demand is rising to catch forage fish, but conventional fishery management doesn't account for the role they play as food for ocean wildlife. As a result, prey fish, while not considered overfished in the traditional sense, can be caught in such large quantities that not enough are left in the water to feed bigger fish, seabirds, and marine animals.

Fishery managers along the Pacific coast are considering a better approach, but they need to hear from people who support protecting a healthy marine food web. Ask the Pacific Fishery Management Council to help ensure a productive marine ecosystem by setting aside forage species that aren't currently protected.

Tell Congress to Phase Out Atrazine

Atrazine, a weedkiller with limited usefulness, causes health and reproduction problems in humans and animals. Although it is now banned in the European Union, the chemical is still in widespread use throughout the United States.

Even at very low levels, the herbicide has been linked to low sperm counts in men, sterility in frogs, and cancers in mammals, including humans. Scariest of all, atrazine leaks into drinking water. A recent study found the chemical in 80% of water samples near the fertilized sites, which puts the majority of the population at risk.

It also lingers for a very long time. Fifteen years after France banned the chemical, atrazine is still being detected.

There is no reason to continue the use of a dangerous herbicide, especially when more effective, less persistent and much safer alternatives exist.

Tell Congress to stop putting the American people, animals and environment at risk and start phasing out atrazine immediately.

Colombia, Protect the Wayuu People from Extinction

The Wayuu people are in danger of becoming extinct. According to Amnesty International, this indigenous group is one of 34 Colombian nations that are in immediate danger of disappearing forever if something is not done immediately.

Angelica Ortiz, a Wayuu, testified at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights earlier on in the year and spoke about how mining has gravely impacted her community. She states that her people have higher rates of diseases, including cancer, and their environment has changed as sources of food have disappeared. Ortiz also mentioned how there has been an increase of violence as women are being raped and people are being killed. Many have fled the area and if this continues, the whole Wayuu people will be dispersed and their culture will be lost forever.

Please tell the President of Colombia and the Secretary-General of the United Nations to intervene and save these people!

Stop the UK Government from legalising the use of stray pets in lab experiments!

The Home Office proposes for the first time to allow stray pets to be caught and used for experiments, for "environmental" or scientific reasons. This was despite unanimous submissions by animal welfare groups supported by many research establishments that the change was both unnecessary and unwelcome. No proposals are made for ensuring that an attempt be made to rehome lost pets rather than subject them to laboratory testing.

Furthermore, by refusing to ban particular experiments, the government is content that grim procedures which would be more at home in a chamber of horrors than a civilised country may continue to be allowed.

For example, the new EU law specifically contemplates that animals in laboratories can be given electric shocks they cannot escape from, to induce "learned helplessness". Highly social animals such as dogs and primates can be locked in "complete isolation for prolonged periods". Organ transplantation where organ rejection is "likely to lead to severe distress or impairment of the general condition of the animals" is allowed, as are all manner of poisoning tests and surgery leading to severe pain or distress and "forced swim or exercise tests with exhaustion ...". The consultation heard not only from animal protection groups but also researchers that there should be a list of experiments that would never be sanctioned, but the Government has refused to rule anything out. Thousands of animal experiments for trivial purposes will continue.

To top it all off, a review of secrecy in animal research begun in 2004 has been further extended, leaving animal experiments hidden from public scrutiny, despite the government's admission that current law is insufficient in terms of EU transparency.

As taxpayers, we have a right to know what goes on, in our names, behind the closed doors of our laboratories - with due regard being paid, naturally, to personal and confidential information. As things stand, we risk lagging behind other European countries in maintaining our obsessive secrecy. Most respondents - including the animal research industry - favoured amending or repealing the clause that allows researchers to hide information about animal experiments from Freedom of Information requests. The government claims to have been reviewing this clause for the last eight years but still refuses to come to a decision. What does it have to hide?

The European public has made it overwhelmingly clear, in a YouGov poll in 2009, that it wants to see far greater openness and bans on all experiments causing severe suffering and any suffering for primates, dogs and cats. Even those respondents who will tolerate some animal testing want experiments which are not for serious medical conditions banned. Once again, the Government is intent on disregarding public opinion.

But at this late hour it is not too late for the Government to bring the animal research industry into line with public opinion.
