			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook this week fired the largest ever warning shot across the bows of Internet giant Google.</p>
<p>At their F8 Developer Conference Facebook announced a series of products aimed at dramatically improving the interaction of web sites with their social networking site.</p>
<p>Blah blah, blah (technical, incomprehensible mumbo jumbo follows&#8230;&#8230;)</p>
<p>But not this time&#8230;&#8230;.</p>
<h2>What Does It Mean in Plain English ?</h2>
<p>My fave Internet Marketing maven (a maven is a trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others) Ed Dale had this to say:-</p>
<p><em>&#8220;So today, Facebook announce, with the addition of a single line of code, you can “like” a news story, a movie on imdb, a music track on pandora…</em></p>
<p><em> IN AN ACT OF SHEER PSYCHOLOGICAL BRILLIANCE – the little line of code puts up a little picture of YOUR friends who’ve also “liked” that thing on the web. Robert Cialdini (author of Influence, the definitive guide to decision making triggers) must have weeped with joy at the social engineering (Note – I love this, I’m not sure others will…)</em></p>
<p><em>Facebook point out – liking something up untill today or tweeting or foursquaring was a temporary blip, if your friends happened to log in the last three hours they MIGHT have seen it. Let’s face it, if you tweeted it’s a crapshoot on a numbers basis if your friends actually see anything.</em></p>
<p><em> So when you click the new “Like” Facebook button, being very helpful and all, Facebook will update your permanent profile with your new like.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>So, in short, if a visitor to your website who is also a Facebook user clicks the Like button you have on your post or page (<em>you have one of these already surely ?</em>) this will go into their profile for all their friends to see as well.</p>
<p>As <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2010/04/21/facebook-formally-announces-its-plans-to-take-over-the-web" target="_blank">WebProNews</a> stated;-</p>
<p><em>&#8220;When you look at just the announcement of Facebook&#8217;s social plugins, you can already see some obvious benefits. Facebook has over 400 million users (probably well over that by now), and by including these plugins on your site, you&#8217;re providing a direct link for them to share your content with their friends, or simply to share their fondness of your brand, and this information will not not only go to Facebook itself, but has the potential to appear in other places on the web that are part of Facebook&#8217;s Open Graph.</em></p>
<p><em>Essentially, Facebook thinks connections are going to become the new links. This will theoretically happen through what they&#8217;re calling the Open Graph.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><em>Facebook supremo Mark Zuckerberg explains it thus:</em></p>

<p>Facebook has focused mostly on mapping out the part of the graph around people and their relationships.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;At the same time, other sites and services have been mapping out other parts of the graph so you can get relevant information about different types of things. For example, Yelp maps out the best local businesses and Pandora maps out which songs are related to each other.</em></p>
<p><em>All of these connections are important parts of the social graph, but until now it hasn&#8217;t been possible to easily share the connections you make on sites like Yelp or Pandora with your friends on Facebook. And you haven&#8217;t been able to bring your friends from Facebook to share experiences on these sites or personalize them to you.&#8221;</em></p>
<h2>What Can It Mean to the Small Business Owner With A Website ?</h2>
<p>If the content on your website is interesting or compelling to someone that visits the website they might click &#8220;Like&#8221; for that particular post or page (if, of course you have Facebook Like button on that post or page).</p>
<p>That places the person&#8217;s thumbnail image next to the button on the page. It also advises their friends on Facebook that they have liked a particular page on your website.</p>
<p>Some of those friends will have interests in common with the site visitor that has just &#8220;Liked&#8221; your page. Some of them will choose to come and have a look at that page as well. Some will click &#8220;Like&#8221; on the page and that will be communicated to their friends etc etc.</p>
<h2>Do you get it ?</h2>
<p>Personal referrals for a page on your website via Facebook. Good content gets a lot more traffic. Great content goes viral !!!!!!!!!!!!!!</p>
<p>The more content you add and promote, the more chance you have of getting more visitors to your website and, of course, when they visit your website you get the chance to sell them something.</p>
<p>ALL THIS WITHOUT HAVING TO BE ON THE FRONT PAGE OF GOOGLE FOR YOUR SPECIFIC KEYWORD !!! (Google, remember Google ?).</p>
<h2>And Here Comes the Real Kicker</h2>
<p>And you can analyse all the traffic in fine detail BECAUSE Facebook knows about the demographics of all it&#8217;s members.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s another article for another day.</p>
<h2>So What Do I Do Now ?</h2>
<p>Well, for a start, there is a <em><strong>&#8220;Like&#8221; button at the top of this article &#8211; CLICK IT NOW AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS</strong></em>.</p>
<p>And pray that your web development partner has even the smallest knowledge of Internet Marketing and social media marketing and that you can add content to your website yourself in a simple and easy manner <em>because the goal posts have just been moved to an entirely new stadium&#8230;..</em></p>

<p>This is a drop in the ocean of the volume that will be shipped in the next 6 months and even less compared to when the real user base gets their hands on one.</p>
<p>A question those in the know have been asking is &#8220;how will your website look to someone with an iPad ?&#8221;</p>
<p>This does matter. It matters today and it will matter even more in 6 months, a year and 2 years time.</p>

<p>The ideal size for a website to fit perfectly on an iPad screen is 980 pixels. Our website width is 960 pixels which leaves 20 pixels for a vertical slider to scroll up and down the viewing pane. Perfect !</p>
<p>This is no fluke. 960 pixels wide is a standard followed by many of the world&#8217;s top web designers. They use this value due both to the fact that an average monitor is now 1024 pixels wide and due to the fact that 960 pixels can easily be divided into any number of columns to assist with ensuring a pleasing layout to the human eye.</p>
<p>Your screen can be divided equally into 2 or 3 or more columns or columns can be added together to make double width columns for a 1:2 columnar ratio or suchlike all providing a symmetrical base for the website&#8217;s layout.</p>
<p>The human eye likes symmetry. We are symmetrical beings. We have two eyes placed symmetrically on our face, two arms, two legs and one nose, one mouth etc &#8211; all positioned symmetrically about our &#8220;boat race&#8221;.</p>
<p>Good web developers have known this for years and design symmetry into their websites.</p>

<p>One thing we will all have to come to grips with though is the lack of support for Flash on the iPhone and the iPad.</p>
<p>This has now become an issue we can no longer ignore.</p>
<p>We have used flash for video and for slideshows, however, have been trying to cut down our addiction to Adobe Flash for a while now.</p>
<p>Newer html standards (html 5) will sort out the video issues although tellingly (and what else is new) Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer does not support html 5 and will not support it until the next version (IE 9) but how many people will upgrade to IE 9 considering the difficulty it is just getting them to move from the horrendous IE 6 ?</p>
<p>Slideshows are not so much of an issue as with our WordPress platform we can use on of the many JQuery slideshows or plugins available for the platform. </p>
<p>JQuery slideshows work perfectly well on the iPad and iPhone so will be our preferred method of slideshow presentation from here on in.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So the iPad has landed now amongst us mere mortals and is being hyped to the heavens by the &#8220;weberatti&#8221; or slagged off as just another fad or gimmick by those that don&#8217;t get it or get paid for playing up to those that really don&#8217;t get it (step forward at least one old and lame US late night chat show host).</p>
<p>The fact is that the real target market for the iPad is actually those that &#8220;really don&#8217;t get it&#8221;.</p>
<p>The &#8220;weberatti&#8221; don&#8217;t <strong><em>NEED</em></strong> an iPad. They <strong><em>WANT</em></strong> an iPad but they really don&#8217;t need one.</p>
<p>The most intelligent of them see the iPad as a new and essential piece of the puzzle of bringing ubiquitous content delivery to the masses.</p>
<p>They see the device as an opportunity to both make money and as a revolution in online access which, when coupled with Facebook and other social media platforms, will significantly broaden their potential market.</p>
<h2>Take My Family &#8211; No, Please, Really, Take Them !</h2>
<p>Let&#8217;s do it chronologically starting off with the first humans I got to know really well. <strong>My parents</strong>.</p>
<p>My personal &#8220;lighbulb over the head&#8221; moment happened when I introduced my iPhone to my parents (both retired).</p>
<p>I then told them there was a bigger version of this thing coming out soon and that it would sell for well under a $1000 dollars.</p>
<p>My parents have a PC and a laptop and a home network but I have never quite been able to get them to understand the concept of files, directories, right clicking and left clicking etc.</p>
<p>They can get a browser started and surf the net, play a few games and such but they really remain afraid of the technology and breaking the computer.</p>
<p>After having a play with the iPhone and seeing an iPad on the Internet they wanted one straight away. They are now bugging me to know when they can purchase one in Australia.</p>
<p>Why ?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s insanely simple to operate. It does exactly what they need it to do and no more.</p>
<p>They do not want to run multiple applications across multiple screens. They do not want to edit video or develop websites.</p>
<p>They just want to check email, play simple games, surf the net, access Facebook and look at photographs and watch videos online.</p>
<p>And they want to do all this from wherever they are in the house, especially whilst sitting in front of the TV or at the kitchen table.</p>
<p><strong>My wife</strong> <strong><em>OPERATES</em></strong> a PC as well, however, she <em><strong>USES</strong></em> an iPhone. She sits in front of the TV for hours of an evening playing games on the iPhone.</p>
<p>Diana also likes women&#8217;s magazines, puzzle magazines and sudoku. Not an uncommon thing for millions of people in the western world.</p>
<p>The iPad is exceptionally suited for magazines, puzzles and games. No time to start up, easy pick up and hold, nice clear screen, operation by touch. It has it all and some more besides.</p>
<p><strong>My daughter</strong> loves her iPhone and Facebook. Her social circle keep informed of what is happening and where they are going of an evening and who is doing what to whom.</p>
<p>YouTube also gets a run out with various viral videos and even TV programs that haven&#8217;t made our shores as well and, of course, music.</p>
<p>The iPad will do all of this better than an iPhone and, as most of it is also performed at home in front of the TV or in her room, it is the perfect size, functionality and price to be the device of choice.</p>
<h2>So To The List of 10 Reasons Why The iPad will Change Computing Forever</h2>
<ul>
<li>The iPad is super simple to use &#8211; no startup, no directories, no complications whatsoever</li>
<li>The iPad is the perfect size &#8211; big enough to <strong><em>REALLY</em></strong> enjoy the content, small enough to place on your lap whilst watching TV or on the bus or train</li>
<li>The iPad is portable &#8211; nothing to connect, no mouse, no cables. Buy one, take it home, unpack it, use it.</li>
<li>The iPad is multi-functional &#8211; web browsing, video, social media, games, magazines, books.</li>
<li>The iPad has a whole heap of really useful applications already available for it before its actual release and more released every hour.</li>
<li>iPad applications are in the main really inexpensive. People don&#8217;t mind paying $5 to $10 for a game. It is a <em>disposable</em> amount. And they can get them delivered <strong><em>NOW</em></strong> !</li>
<li>iPad applications are really easy to find, download and activate. Nothing in the PC or Mac world comes near this level of usability and flexibility.</li>
<li>The iPad supports eBooks and online magazines. You will be able to get anything you want from anywhere around the world soon. This will kill your local newsagency.</li>
<li>The iPad is the perfect social media tool. Social media is here to stay. Facebook is a phenomenon. The iPad is <strong><em>THE</em></strong> perfect Facebook interface. <em>No contest.</em></li>
<li>The iPad is the new personal TV. YouTube and a host of others deliver the content you choose straight to your iPad whether you are on the couch in bed or on the John.</li>
<li>Oh yes, a bonus point &#8211; it&#8217;s less than a $1000 &#8211; and even cheaper in the land of the yanks.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Do You Get It Yet ?</h2>
<p>The goalposts have moved.</p>
<p>The iPad is as important as the PC was in the 1980s.</p>
<p>It is not a matter of the technology. The technology is totally irrelevant.</p>
<p>The iPad has ushered in the next phase of personal computing &#8211; no, that&#8217;s not quite right &#8211; the next phase of <strong><em>personal entertainment and connection</em></strong>.</p>
<p>Nothing will ever be the same again.</p>

<p>Travel with Me are a Perth based travel agency who specialise in linking solo travellers to tours (some hosted by Travel with Me themselves) as well as planning/organising special interest groups such as hikers, art &amp; crafts, cooking and gardening clubs.</p>
<p>The business is the brainchild of local travel industry expert Annette Porter and, in our humble opinion, is a sure fire winner for those looking for something unique and interesting in this packed marketplace.</p>
<h2>The Email Newsletter</h2>
<p>Travel with Me have a sizeable list of clients on their email list eager to find out about all the new deals on offer and to keep up to date with relevant information from the travel experts.</p>
<p>The brief for Onlineassist4u was to produce an email newsletter template that provided Travel with Me with the opportunity to showcase their products, services and knowledge in a format that reflected the company&#8217;s website design (not an Onlineassist4u product) and provided information in a clean, refreshing and easy to access format.</p>
<p>Travel with Me had already made a great decision with regards to their email marketing partner when they selected <a rel="nofollow" href="http://mailchimp.com" target="_blank">MailChimp</a> to host and manage their mailing list and send out their email newsletters.</p>
<p>MailChimp have a number of inhouse email templates, however, this option was unable to provide the level of customisation or usability required to meet Travel with Me&#8217;s high standards.</p>

<p>Onlineassist4u worked closely with Travel with Me Marketing staffer, Michelle Neil, to take the company&#8217;s informative and well written copy and present that in a well laid out, visually striking and user friendly format.</p>
<p>Onlineassist4u provided a hosted &#8220;demo page&#8221; where Annette and Michelle could quickly and easily privately view the email newsletter as it took shape enabling them to highlight inconsistencies and request changes throughout the development process. It was a very interactive experience.</p>

<h2>Some Challenges In Designing An Email Newsletter</h2>
<p>Email newsletters are like a mini website in that they can be displayed in a browser and all of the same tools that are used to develop a website are also used to develop an email newsletter.</p>
<p>There are <strong>a few very big restrictions for email newsletters</strong> that had this web developer going back to some of the coding practices I had not used for years.</p>
<p>The main problem is that email newsletters are primarily viewed in email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Lotus Notes, Gmail, Yahoo Mail Hotmail etc.</p>
<p>Some of these mail clients have been around for quite a while and some just refuse to allow us to use many of the advances in coding that have made web design much more efficient and flexible in recent years.</p>
<p>Firstly you must stick to a rigid narrow width of around 600 pixels (or just over 8 cm). This ensures the newsletter displays in the majority of email clients.</p>
<p>You must use inline styles and tables (a practice that went out in web design circles quite a few years ago now for its lack of flexibility and inefficient coding) which can become very time consuming and inflexible, especially when making changes. The use of Cascading Style Sheets ( CSS ) is totally out.</p>
<p>There is no such thing as multiple &#8220;pages&#8221;. Content is displayed on one long &#8220;scrollable&#8221; page so, for longer newsletters, you must provide great navigation so that the reader is able to find and click on links to articles that interest them.</p>
<h2>What Makes A Great Email Newsletter ?</h2>
<p>A great email newsletter primarily provides interesting and relevant information (Annette and Michelle are certainly winners here).</p>
<p>The design shoud reflect your corporate style (especially the design of your website) to deliver enhanced brand recognition.</p>
<p>The email newsletter must be simple and intuitive for the reader to navigate.</p>
<p>Graphics and relevant images should be used to add interest to the newsletter whilst breaking up large areas off text and making the newsletter less &#8220;intimidating&#8221; for the reader.</p>
<p>As in all good web design, white space and color can also be used to add interest and delineation between sections.</p>
<p>A &#8220;text only&#8221; version must be provided for those email clients that will only accept a &#8220;text only&#8221; version of the newsletter.</p>
<p><em>I think the Travel with Me team and Onlineassist4u nailed it with this one.</em></p>

<p>Here at Onlineassist4u we have found our associations with referral networks to be absolutely critical to our business.</p>
<p>Whilst they are not for every business, we would strongly recommend you check one out and Reallogic is a great place to start.</p>

<h2>Phase 1 Of Real Logic Development</h2>
<p>Our work with Real Logic is only phase one of the full development project.</p>
<p>We will be adding a whole lot of great interactive stuff coming up very soon.</p>
<p>We are waiting for the release of WordPress 3.0 in the first week of May to add a whle lot of this additional functionality to the site as a lot of what we want to do is dependent on some of the new features in this major WordPress release.</p>

<h2>Selecting A Domain Name &#8211; The Important Factors to Consider</h2>
<p>There are a few very important questions you should consider when making this decision.</p>
<ol>
<li>Will my existing customers be able to find my business online ?</li>
<li>Will new potential customers that have heard of my business be able to find it online ?</li>
<li>Will customers searching for my product or service be able to find my business online ?</li>
<li>Will my business be able to get onto the front page of Google to get part of that 60%+ of traffic that never searches beyond the front page ?</li>
</ol>
<p>Most people, when selecting a domain name will try and secure a name that closely mirrors their business name.</p>
<p>If my business is called Kirk Plumbing then I might try and secure kirkplumbing.com or, if located in Australia, kirkplumbing.com.au as I am targetting local clients with my plumbing service (in this case it makes a lot of sense to try and buy both domains but that is another story).</p>
<p>We will call this approach &#8220;naming your domain name after your business name&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Pros and Cons of Naming Your Domain After Your Business Name</h3>
<p>On the plus side;-</p>
<ul>
<li>My existing clients will be able to find me quickly</li>
<li>Potential new clients that have heard of my business through friends etc will also be able to find me very quickly</li>
</ul>
<p>On the negative side;-</p>
<ul>
<li>There is only one potential relevant keyword in my domain name &#8220;plumbing&#8221;.</li>
<li>It will be extremely difficult for me to get to Page 1 on Google for this keyword.</li>
</ul>

<p>To work this out the first test I would give the word plumbing is a &#8220;common sense test&#8221;.</p>
<p>A single word &#8220;keyword&#8221; that is fully descriptive of the industry I am in is likely to be totally dominated by big players in my market.</p>
<p>They have websites that have been around forever and they have thousands of backlinks to their site and pages on their website.</p>
<p>They will continue to inhabit the front page and I will be relegated to page &#8220;irrelevant&#8221;.</p>
<p>Why compete with them when I am likely to fail ? It is a dumb move !!!</p>
<p>The next test I would do <em>(and Onlineassist4u will do this for you if you ask us to after you sign up for our services)</em> is to do some professional keyword research on the term plumbing to validate my common sense test and to see if there are easier and better alternatives to my blatantly obvious keyword choice.</p>
<p>We use a tool called Market Samurai to do this and we have performed the analysis and the results are shown to the right top.</p>
<p>Our test is restricted to the Australian market because this is where this imaginary business is located.</p>

<p>The keyword &#8220;plumbing&#8221; gets a lot of search queries on average per day in our local Australian market.</p>
<p>This is fantastic for a business ranked number one as, on average, 40% of the clicks for that keyword will go to their website.</p>
<p>The rest of the front page will get a good whack of clicks too &#8211; especially if the first couple of sites listed are not plumbing service suppliers.</p>
<p>This does ring alarm bells though. The keyword &#8220;plumbing&#8221; is obviously very valuable.</p>
<p>What can we expect for something of great value ?</p>
<p>Thats right, a whole bunch of bigtime players will be all over this keyword (see chart to lower right).</p>
<p>There is very little (if any) chance of my little plumbing business getting first page for the keyword &#8220;plumbing&#8221; unless I spend up big on SEO services, adding content, building backlinks etc.</p>
<p>All that effort just doesn&#8217;t make any business sense. So I am not going to do it &#8211; period.</p>
<h3>Pros and Cons of Naming Your Domain to Get Search Traffic From Google</h3>
<p>What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking this approach ?</p>
<p>On the plus side;-</p>
<ul>
<li>If we do our research properly and then build our website and promote it we can get a good flow of hot leads through Google &#8211; leads that we might not have otherwise received</li>
<li>Google loves a keyword rich domain name. It gives us a &#8220;free&#8221; boost up the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs)</li>
</ul>
<p>On the negative side;-</p>
<ul>
<li>This takes time and effort and can cost money (speculate to accumulate) &#8211; will we be sufficiently committed to do this and continue to do it ?</li>
<li>Our existing clients might find it harder to find our website if our name is not in the domain name</li>
</ul>
<p><em>So what would we have to do if we decided to take this option ?</em></p>
<p>As we said above. To get a decent volume of search traffic from Google we need to be on page 1 for a search for our keyword phrase.</p>
<p>We also need to select a keyword phrase that gets a good volume of searches per day and isn&#8217;t overrun by competitors that have good SEO on their websites, have lots of backlinks to their websites and have websites that have been around for many years.</p>
<p>So, in the interests of being accurate, I am going to go away now and do a bit of research to find just the right keyword. Once again, I will be using that most professional of keyword research tools, Market Samurai.</p>
<p>The results are in and it was a pretty quick search. &#8220;Plumber Perth&#8221; has a small (but for my small business OK) average volume of search per day.</p>
<p>The competition is there but with diligence and a bit of hard work I believe I can get into those top 10 entries and onto Google&#8217;s front page.</p>
<p>Now, other businesses are not dumb and through their foresight they have already taken <em>plumberperth.com.au</em> and <em>plumber-perth.com.au</em></p>
<p><em>What do I do now ?</em></p>
<p>Well, all is not lost and I am going to hit two birds with one stone here (my apologies to all the animal&#8217;s rights activists &#8211; I have never actually thrown a stone at a bird &#8211; or shot any living thing either for that matter).</p>
<p>I am going to name my domain <em>kirkplumberperth.com.au</em></p>
<p>I could also have selected kirk-plumberperth.com.au but I find it is difficult to explain a hyphen to people over the phone.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p><em>So what is the right way to go ?</em></p>
<p>Do I choose a domain name that reflects my business name or one that will get me traffic through Google ?</p>
<p>Unfortunately there is no single best answer.</p>
<p>For some businesses choosing a domain name that reflects their business name is best and for others trying to get search traffic is extremely important.</p>
<p>If you can get both in a single domain name (and it is not so long or complex that it is impossible for your clients to enter into Google) then that might be the best compromise for you because you get some Google keyword goodness plus you get your business name into the domain name as well.</p>
<p><em>The best advice we can give is go back to your business plan &#8211; identify what type of business you are &#8211; where you are taking your business &#8211; who is your market &#8211; what is important to them etc. </em></p>
<p><em>Then do the right keyword research or get a professional to do it for you.</em></p>
<p><em>Then select a domain name that reflects your review and the keyword research results.</em></p>
<p>This will give you the best answer for your particular business.</p>
<h2>Postscript &#8211; You Guys Chose The Business Name for Your Domain Name &#8211; Why ?</h2>
<p>At Onlineassist4u we chose our business name as our domain name. We have onlineassist4u.com and onlineassist4u.com.au registered.</p>
<p>Why did we do this when we are supposed to be all techy and great at search engine marketing and stuff ?</p>
<p>Like I said at the top of this article. This is a business decision and it must be viewed as such. 100%.</p>
<p>For us, we were establishing a new business that we knew would have much of its success locally at first due to our business strategy of working from business referral clubs and referrals in general.</p>
<p>So if our business was to come from people we met in person and from those people referring us then having our name in the domain name was essential.</p>
<p>Another overriding factor for us was the immense competition for keyword terms that are important for our industry.</p>
<p>Terms like SEO, search engine optimization, web development etc are well and truly owned by people who really do know what they are doing.</p>
<p>Many of them have websites that have been going for years and have tens of thousands of backlinks.</p>
<p>It makes no sense for us as a young business to compete with those guys for those keywords. We would be putting a humungous amount of energy into something that was not guaranteed to bring results.</p>
<p>As we move forward we will find other micro niches we desire to work in, we will do our professional market research and we will build sites that have the keywords in their domain names (we have a few already as it happens).</p>
<p>So, we have a domain name strategy that is based 100% on our business strategy rather than on Google and search. This is the correct way to do it.</p>

<p>They will identify minor items and request changes to get them just perfect based upon their view of how their website should look.</p>
<p>Whilst we do not want to discourage any interest that clients show in their online marketing we know that they are obsessing about the wrong thing when they micromanage the visual design of a website.</p>
<p>Design is important, don&#8217;t get me wrong, but it doesn&#8217;t even come near to a podium finish when the medals are being handed out after the race. </p>
<h2>What Is Really Important On Your Website ?</h2>
<p>Coming in first for the Gold and still the undisputed and reigning champion;-</p>
<h3>The Gold Medal &#8211; Generating Results</h3>
<p>The number of sales / leads / email list signups / etc you receive from your website per day, week, month etc.</p>
<p>This is achieved through a compelling and strategically placed call to action.</p>
<p>The call to action should stand out like a lighthouse on a dark stormy night on the coast in Bass Straight. </p>
<p>It must take up some of your prime website real estate. It must be simple to understand. It must be compelling.</p>
<p>What point is a beautifully designed website that does not get your potential customers to take the action you want them to take ? </p>
<h3>Silver &#8211; Attracting Site Visitors</h3>

<p>The art of getting your website up the search engine rankings so that you do attract visitors for your keywords has nothing to do with visual design.</p>
<p>It has everything to do with selecting the right keywords (through proper, professionally performed keyword research), optimizing your website through good ongoing Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) practices and building backlinks to your website to show Google what an authority your site is on your industry, products and services.</p>
<h3>Bronze &#8211; Content</h3>
<p>Our mantra here at Onlineassist4u is that you must continue to add relevant and compelling content to your website on a regular basis.</p>
<p>That is why we have gone to so much trouble to get you a platform ( WordPress ) that allows you to do that quickly and easily.</p>
<p>Google loves lots of relevant content. Articles, video etc. It all ensures that your website is seen by the Googlebot as a relevant site that is regularly updated and would be interesting to their users &#8211; the people who perform searches using Google.</p>
<p>Relevant and informative content is also great for your site visitors. You can educate, inform and generally add value and the longer a person is on your website and the more times they return the more chances you have to sell them something.</p>
<h3>Usability of Your Website</h3>
<p>Coming up just out of the medal count is Usability.</p>
<p>You must design your website so the pages / posts are laid out in a logical order and people can quickly and obviously get what they want without having to search.</p>
<p>The Googlebot also appreciates the effort you take here because it also is looking for websites with logically laid out content that is easy to find.</p>
<p>This is very little to do with visual design. It has everything to do with logical design and up front planning of your website. </p>
<h3>Search Engine Friendliness</h3>
<p>You can get a lot of the above correct and your website can look absolutely fabulous but if it is built out of flash or has a design from the 1990&#8242;s based around tables for layout (so many web developers still do this) you are somewhat wasting your time.</p>
<p>The Googlebot has a lot of work to get through and it rewards websites that are built with modern standards and easy to access content.</p>
<p>You should be using modern design with the content and the layout separated ( Cascading Stylesheets or CSS as it is known ) and keep the flash down to an absolute minimum.</p>
<p>On top of that flash doesn&#8217;t show up on your website for iPhone users (and that ain&#8217;t going to change any time soon) so it&#8217;s longer term viability is questionable especially as much of what flash can do is better achieved through the open standards that are about to become mainstream &#8211; HTML5 and CSS3 (Flash is proprietary and not an open platform).</p>
<h3>Website Performance Analysis</h3>
<p>Analyse the performance of your website. Make changes. Rinse and repeat.</p>
<p>How many visitors are you getting to your website everyday, where are they coming from, what pages / posts are they viewing, how many pages / posts are they viewing each time they visit, what percentage come to your website and &#8220;bounce&#8221; straight off.</p>
<p>What is your conversion rate ? If you make a small change to the site does your conversion rate improve, decline, stay the same ? Rinse and repeat.</p>

<h3>Visual Design</h3>
<p>Well it had to come at some point and this is about the correct position in the overall scheme of things.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s MOST important in visual design though is to have some consistency throughout your business.</p>
<p>If you have a logo in a certain style that includes certain color combinations then it makes sense to continue that style and repeat those color combinations on your website.</p>
<p>If you have an existing brochure with a particular layout that works then see if you can continue this through the visual design of your website. Saying that though the brochure is static and a website is dynamic so there must be some enhancements to the website over a brochure.  </p>
<p>This consistency gives your business a more professional and stable feel &#8211; something that all small businesses should be looking to achieve.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>So what have we learnt from all of the above ?</p>
<p>Take home one thing from this article &#8211; if you are going to sweat stuff during your website&#8217;s development &#8211; sweat the big stuff !!!</p>
<p>Are you getting sufficient business from your website ? If not, why not ? Analyse your results, make changes, analyse them again etc&#8230;..</p>
<p>Are you getting sufficient traffic to your website ? If not, why not ? Analyse your results, make changes, analyse them again etc&#8230;.. </p>
<p>Are you moving up the Google SERPs ( Search Engine Results Pages ) ? Analyse your results, make changes, analyse them again etc&#8230;.. </p>
<p>Do you have the right SEO strategy ? What are your keywords ? Are they relevant ? Do they get sufficient search traffic ? Can you compete against the businesses on page 1 of Google for those particular keywords ? Get a professional like Onlineassist4u to do this for you. It is a key component for your success. Do not leave it out.</p>
<p>Is your website Googlebot friendly ? Get a report done on your website. Analyse the results. Where can you improve ?</p>
<p>Add relevant content to your website regularly. Do not leave this out because it is too hard. Do it and you will be rewarded.</p>
<p>Check out how usable your website is for your site visitors. Get a friend or a client to give you a critique. You will be amazed at how they navigate through your website &#8211; I was.</p>
<p>And then, if you have any time left after all of the above (and if you have then you are not doing it correctly) &#8230;.. worry about that image being moved 2mm to the left because it &#8220;just doesn&#8217;t look right to me&#8221;.</p>
