Is Freemium Ruining Your Business?

Have you ever felt that the freemium model was a disservice to your business?

I'm sure many of you have felt the slight heartbreak of pricing your app for free after spending months of work on development.

I got an email after one of my live trainings from an AE member who was really struggling with this concept. I feel many of you can relate, so I wanted to open some conversation on this topic.

Cristi has started developing apps for children and decided (after much debate and research) to price her app for $3.99 with no ads or IAPs, and work diligently on outside marketing materials so people can fully "preview" the app prior to purchasing.

Her question:

Does this model that we are pursuing make sense in today's market?

And in particular in the niche market that we are serving?

Would it make sense to continue this approach with all of our apps or to have a few simpler apps that would be free with ads and in app purchases?

This leads me to the thought that the Freemium model is "spoiling" users into expecting everything to be free...

Are developers in their quest to earn money from their apps through the freemium model changing the mindset of users to expect all apps to be free thereby forcing everyone to use that model?"

To answer the first question, yes.

It's always a good idea in today's market to publish some freemium apps in your network. Try publishing a free version with ads and then offer a PRO version with all the bells and whistles. This will really help test your demographic and marketing, where as pricing all your apps as paid won't necessarily provide you with much data since the barrier to entry is so high. You're better off collecting data and growing a user-base than trying to only get paid downloads. Information is everything!

And to address the dilemma we've all felt as developers, "are we enabling customers?"

This is where you have to take the emotion out of it. While you may think that if we all just priced our apps as paid, then everyone can win, it's just not the case. Users as a whole would download a lot less apps.

Studies have shown that users are willing to spend money on IAPs, or willing to put up with ads, rather than pay for an app upfront. This may have a little to do with the vague "refund" model Apple has in place.

Can users get a refund?

Yes.

Do most know how?

No, so they want to make sure they like it before they buy it. When it comes to virtual goods, users want some insurance.

"We simply see this as the outcome of consumer choice: People want free content more than they want to avoid ads or to have the absolute highest quality content possible," Flurry's Mary Ellen Gordon writes. "...their behavior makes it clear that they are willing to accept it in exchange for free content, just as we have in radio, TV and online for decades."

Moral of the story: freemium allows us to obtain mass amounts of users. You would simply not get the amount of people in your door even if we all priced our apps as paid. Users in freemium apps also tend to spend more money over time, so don't underestimate the freemium model just because there's no initial purchase.

These users have the opportunity to continually make purchases over and over again (more coins, more hints, more frames, etc) since all features are not unlocked at once like in a paid app.

More importantly, follow your genre's model, but test everything. Cristi noticed that her competitors didn't always follow the freemium model, but this is exactly why testing is important. If you feel that you're not getting enough downloads off paid apps, then try creating alternative versions of them (free, pro, IAP, etc). Data is so crucial to influencing how your app does in the market that if you're not seeing the numbers you want, make a change!

Have Your Most Productive Day- My 2 Best Tricks...

This is probably the most important topic I can write about, and also the hardest for
people to master. Due to endless gizmos and gadgets, people are "plugged-in" at all
hours of the day. Texts, emails, calls, chats, snaps are usually just a hands-reach away,
but are all HUGE distractions when trying to focus on your most important tasks.
Thanks iPhone! ;)

Many of you got into the app game to get your time back. However, some of you
might feel you're spending a little more time and energy than you should. Don't be
discouraged though. I still go through that! I have to check-in with myself every couple
weeks to ensure I'm managing my time the most effectively. But trust me, once you set
up a system, you'll really start to reap the rewards of being an appreneur.

There are two tricks that have really saved me the most amount of time possible while
still getting sh*t done! Once you utilize them, you'll see a massive spike in your
productivity and hopefully take a little weight off your shoulders.

The 2 Most Important Tricks I Use

1. Chunk Time

Not the name of my favorite candy bar, it's actually how I schedule my days. Pick 2 - 4
of the most important projects of your day or week. This can vary due to the size of the
task, but don't pick 10 things. Keep it focused. What are the most important projects to
accomplish today? Now schedule blocks of time to complete each project (or element of
a project) into your day. I know some people who schedule their day the night before,
but it's easiest for me to spend 15 minutes on it each morning. No emails, calls, texts, etc.
during these chunks (unless it's specifically designated for that)!

Example: I tend to have a lot of calls each week so I schedule a chunk of time that I can
take calls each day and only schedule calls in those hours. Not only does it keep me off
the phone all day, it makes my calls more time-efficient since I have another one right after.

Challenge: Try this for two weeks. Schedule every day by chunking your time instead of
being reactive to the day.

2. Training Others to Be Me

There are a ton of "virtual assistant" options, as well as local services like TaskRabbit, that
can save you time through outsourcing. However, to really kick it up a notch (and save you
massive amounts of time) find people to be "you" with tasks that are more complicated. I've
trained people on my team to understand exactly the way I would do things from developing
apps to writing emails to making business deals. Don't underestimate people's abilities to take
on your role.

The key is to have trust. People will mess up, but they'll never learn otherwise
so don't micro-manage! I've continued to be blown away by what my team can accomplish
simply because I let go of the wheel. Once you've spent enough time training them, they'll
only need to check-in with you sporadically, which leaves you with a well-oiled machine and
time to finish other projects...or maybe take a vacation ;)

Challenge: Choose one "complicated" role and start training someone else to take the lead.
You'll know it's a complicated task when it feels uncomfortable or stressful to hand it over to
someone else!

How Much AdWords Stupidity Tax Can You Afford to Pay?

Google just changed the rules AGAIN with Enhanced Campaigns.

After doing AdWords for 12 years, I know what this means:

-Google just raised Stupidity Tax. This time, Google's getting a lot more $ for mobile devices than the traffic is actually worth. 90% of their advertisers will follow like blind sheep.

(Hint: You need to make sure you do NOT pay 100% for mobile traffic!)

-10% of advertisers will get smarter and eat the sheep for lunch.

You get to decide whether you're a smart one, or a sheep.

The best thing you can get is a thorough AdWords education, so you man the controls with skill. When you know AdWords better than your competitors, you get the lion's share of the traffic.

Wall Street has not been happy with Google, because Google just missed their 2nd quarter 2013 targets.

These two events walk hand in hand. In fact they've just eloped.

Bid prices are sliding downward because of mobile phones. The ground is shifting beneath Google's feet so they're doing a land grab.

The land grab is "Enhanced Campaigns." It's where Google lumps mobile devices together with PC's and tablets, seizing more control of where your ads show. This is a way for them to charge you more money for clicks from mobile devices.

It's the oldest game in the world. Google has always been doing stuff like this.

Cheap clicks on mobile-only are a thing of the past now.

This will be a field day for consultants and savvy AdWords advertisers who are up on what's going on. If your competitors are asleep at the wheel, their conversion rates just went down.

One thing I see as a MAJOR advantage - which ONLY advanced marketers will grasp - is a new ability to adjust bids based on geography.

I have done extensive analysis of my own database with Ben Morris, and we know, for example, that people in Hinsdale Illinois (a posh suburb of Chicago) are 20 times more likely to become my customer as people in Bellwood (a ghetto).

Enhanced campaigns make it much easier to bid 20 cents in Bellwood and $2.00 in HInsdale. Nationwide marketers will do VERY well to pay attention to such things. Enhanced Campaigns will help this item.

Enhanced Sitelinks also give you more bells and whistles than before.

There has been a huge outcry about this all over the web - but Google needs a short term revenue boost so they're coming to soak it from YOU.

The bottom line:

This is a mixed bag and it's bad if you're not paying attention. It can be a win for you if you DO pay attention. It's a change of rules.

Discernment.

Discernment is the thing that makes the invisible edge visible. It's the thing that tells you what you need to know - when you don't even know what you don't know.

I wish you could just read a book and suddenly GET discernment. I wish I could spring some magic pixie dust on all my customers and they would suddenly have it.

Books help and pixie dust probably helps too. But the only way I know for people to acquire discernment is to seek out other people who have… discernment.
