The Ethiopian Bible, which contains 81 books (compared to the Western 66), preserves a vision of the afterlife and divine presence that remains largely untouched by the specific theological shifts of Rome and the European Renaissance [04:19].

Based on the research presented in the video, here is an analysis of how the Ethiopian tradition describes Heaven and why it differs so significantly from Western perspectives:

1. Heaven as “Earth Healed” rather than “Escape”

In Western theology, Heaven is often depicted as a distant, celestial kingdom—a “ladder out of the dust” [08:16]. In contrast, the Ethiopian tradition views Heaven as creation transfigured.

Horizontal Nearness: Heaven is not “above” the clouds but “beside” and “around” us, woven through the world we walk daily [01:14].

Restoration: It is described not as a golden palace, but as a “valley of living green” and “rivers that remember your name” [01:31]. It is this world healed and restored, rather than discarded [09:28].

2. The Seven Layered Heavens

The Ethiopian Bible describes an ascending journey through seven distinct realms, each representing a deeper stage of spiritual awakening [13:20]:

Sakai: A “garden of relief” where the soul experiences the initial release from earthly weight [13:46].

Cayama: A place of cleansing and healing for the soul’s wounds, notably described as “cleansing without cruelty” or terror [14:53].

Malt: A treasury of wisdom where all unresolved questions and doubts are met with understanding [15:28].

Baron: A realm of absolute honesty and “light without shadows” [16:09].

Mayos: The level where the human will merges with the divine will, ending all inner conflict [16:55].

Zeales: The realm of “primordial sound,” where reality is experienced as the vibration/music that holds galaxies together [17:39].

Ara: The final threshold, a brink where the soul stands as near to the Creator as possible without losing its identity [18:12].

3. The Nature of Angels and God

The Ethiopian perspective shifts the focus from physical forms to divine presence:

Angels: Instead of winged, feathered humans, angels are “shimmering presences” or “intensity.” They are manifestations of God’s communication rather than separate biological-style beings [10:10].

God’s Presence: God is not an “emperor on a far-off throne” but a presence that “saturates the landscape” [11:36]. Heaven is described as the moment we finally heal the “blindness” that prevents us from seeing God already walking among us [12:07].

4. Why the Difference Exists

Geographical Influence: Living in high plateaus where clouds often sit below the peaks, Ethiopian theology reflects a world where the “sky is level with your life” [24:52].

Cultural Independence: Because Ethiopia was never fully colonized, its sacred imagination was not rewritten by foreign empires or the Council of Chalcedon in the same way as Western traditions [02:25].

Communal Focus: Ethiopian life is deeply communal; thus, salvation is viewed as a “collective healing” of a people and their land, rather than just an individual’s private contract with God [31:20].

In summary, the Ethiopian Bible suggests that the real distance between humanity and Heaven is not measured in miles or height, but in perception and likeness [21:00].

8 AM Worship Service from February 1, 2026. This service is particularly significant as it marks Day 21 of their “SEEK” journey—a 30-day spiritual fast and prayer period [01:16].

From a scholarly and liturgical perspective, here are the key biblical and communal themes presented:

1. Liturgical Framework and Sacred Space

The service opens with a strong emphasis on the Sanctuary as a “Sacred Space” [01:30]. The leadership underscores that worship is not “entertainment” but a “gift from our hearts and minds” [08:56].

Psalm 18:2 Imagery: The prayer references God as a “Strong Tower” where the righteous run and are safe [09:03].

Unity in Worship: The scholar’s eye would note the intentional deconstruction of hierarchy within the sanctuary—reminding the congregation that “there are no sacred seats,” and all should make room for one another on “one accord” [09:51].

2. Biblical Education and Literacy

A major scholarly initiative mentioned is the “Bible in 90 Days” program, set to begin on February 15, 2026 [02:46:09].

Translation: The church uses the NIV (New International Version) for this journey but encourages various translations to foster consistency and spiritual growth [02:46:18].

Theological Integration: This is not just reading; it includes weekly discussions and theological videos to provide historical and hermeneutical context [02:46:09].

3. Faith and Modernity (Generative AI)

Notably, the church is hosting a multi-week seminar starting February 7, 2026, exploring Generative AI through the lens of faith and community [18:30]. This represents a modern “faith seeking understanding” (fides quaerens intellectum) approach, equipping “Seasoned Saints” and students alike to navigate emerging technology ethically and spiritually.

4. Social Gospel and Praxis

The service reflects a “Social Gospel” tradition, where biblical mandates for justice and mercy are put into practice:

Prison Ministry: An interactive simulation on February 28th aims to build empathy for those re-entering society after incarceration, focusing on “second chances” and reducing recidivism [02:46:36].

Public Health: The “HIV/AIDS Ministry” promotes compassionate leadership and education to break stigma [18:09].

HBCU Sunday: A celebration of Black history and education (February 8th), linking faith with cultural legacy and communal identity [17:33].

This video is a full episode of American Black Journal from Detroit PBS, titled “Black Church in Detroit series examines youth in the church.” Host Stephen Henderson leads a discussion with local religious leaders about the declining participation of young African-Americans in the church and strategies to re-engage them.
Key Discussion Points:
* The Decline in Participation: The episode highlights a Pew Research Center study showing that many young African-Americans are leaving the church. The guests attribute this to a loss of community unity, the breakdown of traditional family structures, and the shift from “mandatory” church attendance to personal choice [03:33].
* The Church’s Changing Role: Bishop Herman Starks notes that the church used to be a 24/7 hub for the community—providing shelter, food, and safety—but many church doors are now closed after 5:00 PM, reducing their local impact [07:46].
* Competing Influences: The panel discusses how social media, the internet, and a “godless” culture provide constant alternative stimuli that compete with traditional religious teachings [12:04].
Strategies for Re-engagement:
* Ownership and Involvement: Pastor Ola Davis emphasizes letting youth “own” their faith by creating their own programs, such as Code 22, a violence reduction and peace initiative in Detroit [15:39].
* Holistic Youth Programming: Reverend JB Fields discusses meeting youth where they are through monthly hangouts, college circles, and recreational activities like trips to rage rooms or the movies to build community outside of Sunday service [18:04].
* Civic Engagement: Bishop Starks highlights the importance of involving youth in activism, voting drives, and community service to show them that the church’s mission extends to real-world issues [20:44].
* Contextualizing Faith: The leaders stress the need for the church to remain relevant by addressing modern challenges like gun violence, teenage pregnancy, and fatherhood in ways that resonate with today’s generation [22:34].
Featured Guests:
* Pastor Ola Davis: Always in Jesus Presence Ministries.
* Reverend JB Fields: Youth Pastor at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church.
* Bishop Herman Starks: Christ Truth International Ministries.

Kwami Kilpatrick, uses the biblical account of Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem to illustrate how to overcome obstacles and complete God-given assignments.

Nehemiah’s Mission and Opposition

Nehemiah, a government official, was tasked with the monumental project of rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls. He organized the people, who worked diligently while also being prepared to defend against their enemies [02:21:00].

Nehemiah faced three main plots from his adversaries, Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem:

Hellish Subtlety (Nehemiah 6:1-4) [01:28:00]: They attempted to subtly distract Nehemiah by inviting him to a meeting in the plain of Ono [01:33:20]. Nehemiah, demonstrating “heavenly wisdom” [02:50:00], refused, stating, “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” [01:34:56]. The speaker emphasized that God equips those He calls, and one must be certain of their divine mission [02:59:55].

Lies to Produce Fear and Public Shame (Nehemiah 6:5-9) [01:48:00]: The enemies spread false rumors through an unsealed letter, accusing Nehemiah and the Jews of plotting a revolt and claiming Nehemiah intended to become king [01:50:00]. Nehemiah’s response was to declare the truth and return to his work, praying, “Now strengthen my hands, O Lord” [01:59:00].

Cowardice and Intimidation (Nehemiah 6:10-14) [01:59:00]: A prophet named Shemaiah, hired by Tobiah and Sanballat, tried to intimidate Nehemiah into hiding in the temple, citing a threat to his life [01:59:00]. Nehemiah refused, asserting, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save my own life? I will not go!” [02:03:00]. He discerned that this prophet was not sent by God [02:09:00].

The Outcome and Key Lessons

Despite the relentless opposition, Nehemiah successfully completed the wall, as recorded in Nehemiah 6:15 [02:15:00].

The speaker highlighted several lessons for developing the passion to finish:

Keep Working: Remain focused on the task God has given you [03:50:00].

State the Truth: Do not succumb to lies or rumors [03:55:00].

Give it to God: Pray and trust God to handle opposition [04:00:00].

Embrace Temptation: Challenges, like Jesus’s temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4) [05:28:00], strengthen spiritual resolve [05:28:00].

Kilpatrick also referenced Isaiah [03:59:00] when discussing God’s foreknowledge of one’s future.

Author Sandre Dalton-Smith delved into her spiritual journey and the core concepts of her book, “Being Fully Known.” Her powerful message offers a refreshing perspective on finding joy and satisfaction through a deeper relationship with God.

Sandre’s personal story is one of profound healing. Having lost her mother in childbirth, she grappled with feelings of abandonment and a perception of God as unfair [01:14]. Despite accepting Christ at 16, a “father wound” lingered for two decades, hindering her ability to fully trust God and leading to stress and burnout [02:04]. Her breakthrough came with the realization that true rest and healing were intertwined with surrendering control and embracing trust in God [02:54].

“Being Fully Known” is a continuation of her exploration of rest, building upon her previous work, “Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity.” Through her “restquiz,” Sandre identified a widespread struggle with spiritual, emotional, and social rest [07:06]. Her new book tackles the “tension of becoming,” challenging the societal notion that identity is defined by roles rather than a biblical understanding of self [07:41].

The book’s subtitle, “The Joyful Satisfaction of Beholding, Becoming, and Belonging,” encapsulates its transformative message:

Beholding: This involves prioritizing understanding Christ through scripture, rather than getting caught up in endless to-do lists or external expectations [09:04]. It’s about seeing Jesus in every aspect of life.

Becoming: As we behold Christ, we naturally grow to become more like Him [09:11]. This is a process of transformation rooted in our gaze upon the divine.

Belonging: This speaks to finding our unique place, not by conforming, but by bringing a distinct element of God that may be missing from a given space [09:17]. It’s about authentic connection and contribution.

Sandre also highlights common obstacles to this journey of belonging and growth. “Friendly fire” from well-meaning loved ones can unintentionally hinder progress due to fear of change [10:25]. Additionally, people often resist the “fields of anointing”—processes like suffering, surrender, stretching, and soaring—which are crucial for deeper understanding of God and fuller expression of His presence [11:52].

She encourages a childlike spirit of exploration, free from self-judgment and conventional definitions of success [16:19]. A key takeaway is that our level of rest directly reflects our level of trust in God [04:44].

When asked about her favorite women in the Bible, Sandre mentioned Deborah and Esther [18:27]. She resonates with Esther’s journey of discovering her identity after pain and how her past shaped her destiny [18:33]. Deborah, on the other hand, inspires Sandre with her strength and authority, serving as a model for women to embody both gentle and authoritative qualities, much like Jesus [20:12].

Ultimately, beholding Jesus in everyday life begins with intention and a lifestyle of abiding—being consciously aware of His spirit and divine appointments [21:58]. This includes perceiving the needs of others and responding with kindness, even through a simple look or smile [22:50]. A powerful prayer Sandre suggests is, “God, show me where you’re moving today and how do you want me to respond to that movement?” [24:54].

J3 Project podcast, host Lisa Fields interviewed Dr. Joseph Byamukama, a New Testament scholar and founder of Veracity Found, an organization dedicated to providing contextual theological resources to the Ugandan church. Dr. Byamukama, who also helped plant The Found Church in Kampala, shared profound insights from his doctoral research on how the book of Isaiah influenced Luke’s portrayal of Jesus in the book of Acts [02:26:00]. The discussion shed light on common misconceptions about African Traditional Religions (ATR) and their intersection with Christian faith.

Debunking Misconceptions about ATR

Dr. Byamukama addressed the misconception that Christianity introduced a new God to Africa, implying that Africans were animists without prior knowledge of the one true God [04:15:00]. He argued that God has always been present and active in Africa, and missionaries should have first sought to understand God’s existing work there [26:00].

Another prevalent misconception is that ATR involves numerous gods vying for supreme status. Dr. Byamukama clarified that traditionally, Africans believed in one supreme creator, known by various names like Rohanga or Katona, distinct from lesser deities associated with natural elements [05:49:00]. The idea of God withdrawing from humanity due to sin, similar to the Genesis narrative, is also common in many African cultures, leading to a belief that God’s proximity could be dangerous [07:57:00]. This perceived relational gap often led to the reliance on intermediary figures like ancestors or deified natural phenomena [09:36:00].

African Spirituality, Monotheism, and the “Orisa”

While often perceived as polytheistic, Dr. Byamukama explained that ATR, in some aspects, exhibits monotheistic tendencies due to the understanding of a supreme God [07:02:00]. He clarified that “Orisa” in the Yoruba tribe can refer to the universal God who created all things, unrestricted by geographical or ethnic boundaries [01:53:00]. It can also refer to the pantheon of gods that bridge the relational gap between the transcendent supreme God and daily life [01:46:00].

The Harmful Demonization of African Spirituality

A tragic consequence of missionary and colonial encounters has been the tendency to label everything African as demonic [01:53:00]. This has unfortunately led some people of African descent to view Christianity as a colonial religion. Dr. Byamukama emphasized that God’s presence in Africa predates Christian missionaries, evidenced by the existence of African names for God in local languages [02:45:00]. He suggested that missionaries should have first affirmed what the Gospel confirms in African sensibilities (like the belief in a supreme being), then clarified, and finally confronted aspects that needed correction [02:26:00].

Fear of Death and Polygamy

The traditional African fear of death, rooted in the belief that one’s identity dissolves if not remembered by living descendants, contributed to practices like polygamy [02:34:00]. Having many children, often through multiple wives, was a way to ensure remembrance and avoid oblivion after death [02:49:00]. Dr. Byamukama highlighted the Christian doctrine of resurrection as a beautiful and redemptive teaching that directly addresses this fear, offering hope that personhood does not dissolve at death [03:58:00].

Witchcraft and the Doctrine of Suffering

Witchcraft remains a significant concern in Africa, with some individuals returning to ATR when Christianity doesn’t seem to offer immediate solutions to their problems [03:21:00]. Dr. Byamukama defined witchcraft as manipulating spiritual powers to harm others [04:42:00]. He noted that Africans traditionally had a transactional relationship with gods, seeking solutions rather than loving God for His own sake [03:27:00]. This mindset can unfortunately transfer to Christianity, leading to pastors being treated like witch doctors [03:37:00].

He also pointed out that a lack of understanding of the doctrine of suffering in many African churches leads people to believe that suffering indicates falling out of God’s favor [03:52:00]. This can drive them back to witchcraft when prayers for relief are not immediately answered [04:01:00]. Dr. Byamukama stressed the importance of teaching that God protects against witchcraft and that His will may involve suffering for growth [04:18:00]. While not all individuals in African religions practice witchcraft, there is a widespread awareness of its reality [04:11:00].

G. Craige Lewis of EX Ministries delivers a powerful message about the spiritual implications of award shows and the music industry, arguing that they often promote darkness and stray from true worship.

Lewis begins by drawing a parallel between church worship and ancient mythology, explaining that praise and glory invite a spiritual presence. While in church, this presence is God’s, bringing joy, healing, and deliverance [02:46], in antiquity, praise was offered to gods (fallen angels) to invoke their presence [01:27]. He asserts that award shows are not merely celebrations but “satanic ceremonies” and “initiations” where artists unknowingly become part of a ritual [04:36].

The speaker emphasizes music as a powerful tool that can bypass one’s guard, making musicians influential in leading people either towards God or into darkness. He suggests that even artists associated with gospel music, like Kirk Franklin and Snoop Dogg, contribute to a blending of the sacred and profane [11:23, 31:52].

Lewis also points to symbolism in performances, such as artists wearing masks or disfiguring themselves, interpreting these actions as signs of manipulation by an “entity” or “demon” as a pledge to the industry [13:02, 16:23].

Citing Isaiah 14:13-14, Lewis explains that the devil’s primary goal is to receive praise and worship, wanting to be like God and ascend above Him [18:44, 30:51]. This desire to “sit upon the mount of the congregation” means he aims to intercept the praise meant for God [18:51, 31:07].

He further argues that as artists age and seek continued relevance, they compromise their holiness and righteousness to appeal to the world, adopting profane language and actions [38:10, 41:26]. This, he contends, leads to a loss of their true identity and promotes their “humanness” over “God’s holiness” [50:39].

The message concludes with a strong call to action for listeners to examine their music choices and “delete that playlist” that contains secular or compromised music, as it can lead to spiritual defilement and hinder one’s walk with God [57:05, 01:03:17]. Lewis stresses the importance of discernment in what one consumes, especially given music’s ability to influence and program individuals, particularly the youth [59:11].

On Sunday, June 29, 2025, Dr. Eric Mason delivered a sermon titled “Indulgence” as part of the “Spirit as Guide: God in Me and God in You” series. This sermon continued the exploration of the Holy Spirit’s characteristics, specifically delving into the book of Galatians.

The core message of “Indulgence” focuses on the Spirit’s transformative work in shaping our desires. Dr. Mason emphasized a call to love and serve others, contrasting this with self-centered indulgence. The sermon highlighted that the Spirit produces the “fruit of the kingdom,” which includes love, joy, and peace, as evidence of a life aligned with God’s will. Listeners were challenged to examine their impulses and behaviors, choosing practices that lead to flourishing rather than temporary satisfaction. True fulfillment, as suggested by the sermon, comes from the Spirit’s work in transforming our hearts to reflect God’s love to the world.

Referenced Bible Verses and Books:

While the sermon specifically focused on the book of Galatians, several other scriptures were noted as relevant for engagement around this date:

Galatians: The sermon is noted to continue through this book.
Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” This was highlighted as the “Verse of the Day” for June 29, 2025. Other verses from Matthew 5 (3-8) were also mentioned in relation to the preceding days.
Joel 1-3: Suggested for deeper engagement.
Acts 2: Suggested for deeper engagement.
1 Corinthians 5: Suggested for deeper engagement.
Isaiah 11:1-6 and Matthew 7:14 were also referenced in related daily devotionals.
The sermon encouraged choosing practices that lead to flourishing and allowing the Spirit to transform hearts to reflect God’s love.
