While there have been tough phones which can resist the elements, before (such as the Sonim range), the Motorola Defy is among the first smartphones that could be described in the same way. And that makes the Motorola Defy an intriguing phone; however, can it be as good as that initial intrigue suggests?

Design - 8/10
The problem with some tough phones is that they look ugly, but what is particularly nice about the Motorola Defy is that, despite being designed as a waterproof phone, there is very little in the design that shows that. Other than a couple of exposed screws, and the battery lock cover, the Motorola Defy looks just like an everyday smartphone; that is to say, the Motorola Defy looks good, and it has to get extra marks for not looking like a tough phone!

Operating System - 9/10
The Motorola Defy uses Android 2.1, and as Android is one of the most powerful operating systems on the market, there are no worries in the software department. However, the Motorola Defy also gets extra marks for including Motorola's MOTOBLUR interface, optimised for social networking (more on that in a second). Of course, with access to the Android Market, the Motorola Defy can also be customised with new apps, and so, there is almost nothing to find fault with, here.

Hardware - 10/10
The Motorola Defy may not have the fastest processor in the world (although it does run at 800MHz, which is not slow), but that is not enough to knock any marks off. This is because what sets the Motorola Defy apart is the fact that its body is waterproof; that is a brilliant feature. The mere concept of a smartphone one could even use underwater is too impressive not to give the Motorola Defy full marks for hardware!

Camera and media - 9/10
The Motorola Defy includes a 5MP camera, which has more or less become the industry standard for smartphones. Android also brings media features to the Motorola Defy, including the ubiquitous Youtube app. However, the Motorola Defy has to get extra marks for being the first phone that could be used (as an example), if one so desired, to take photos of your fish-tank, from inside the tank. That is impressive, to say the least!

Screen - 9/10
At 3.7 inches, with a resolution of 480x854 pixels, the Motorola Defy is more or less the same as the Motorola Milestone 2. Therefore, the Motorola Defy also has the same aspect ratio as that phone, making it close enough to be 16:9 widescreen. The screen is also made of scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, which is a particularly important feature in a tough phone. Put simply, the Motorola Defy's screen is both tough and beautiful.

Social - 9/10
With Motorola's MOTOBLUR interface installed, the Motorola Defy is a seriously social smartphone; things like Facebook or Twitter feeds are front and centre on the device, and things like friends' statuses are updated in real-time. As with the earlier DEXT, the Motorola Defy is a truly social beast.

Overall - 9/10
The Motorola Defy is a somewhat unique proposition in the world of smartphones. If it were a normal, traditional smartphone, it would be a good phone. It is reasonably powerful, if not the most powerful phone in the world, with good looks and great features. However, when you also factor in that the Motorola Defy is completely waterproof down to a depth of 1.5m, it goes from being a good phone to being a downright brilliant phone. Because of that, because it merges the world of smartphones and tough phones so seamlessly, the Motorola Defy comes highly recommended.

HTC Desire

HTC Desire

The HTC Desire, also known as the phone that was the template for the Google Nexus One, is already one of the most successful Android smartphones ever made. It has enjoyed tremendous success, but why is that? What is it that makes the HTC Desire such a popular phone? Could it be its 3.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen display? Or its combination of Google Android and HTC Sense?
Operating System - 9/10
As is well known, the HTC Desire runs on Android; it includes Android 2.1 out of the box, but is upgradable to Android 2.2 (colloquially known as Froyo). This allows for good navigation and customised homescreens and shortcuts, as well as giving you access to Google services, such as seach and email, and the rapidly going Android Market for apps. However, the HTC Desire also uses HTC's excellent Sense interface, on top of Android, adding in new animations and features (and that famous HTC clock), making the HTC Desire simply incredible to use.
Hardware - 9/10
The HTC Desire was one of the first of the new wave of so-called 'superphones', and this really shows in the hardware. It all starts with the 1GHz Snapdragon processor, which makes the HTC Desire very fast. It also supports microSD up to 32GB, so storage will never be a problem. Although more recent phones are beginning to surpass it, the HTC Desire still has some of the best hardware on the market.
Camera and media - 9/10
The camera on the HTC Desire comes in at five-megapixels, which is average for a modern smartphone, and lower than some more recent phones, but it makes up for it with a raft of brilliant media features. Central among these is the Youtube app, which naturally comes as part of Android. Thus, the HTC Desire is something of a multimedia monster. The HTC Desire's music player is also exceptionally good.
Screen - 9/10
The HTC Desire is unusual, because older versions of the phone have an entirely different screen to the most recent version (HTC switched to S-LCD screens when AMOLED screens were in short supply). However, both versions are 3.7-inches of superbness, with the HTC Desire, in both incarnations, having one of the better screens on the market. Colour reproduction is excellent, and daylight legibility is surprisingly good; put simply, in either incarnation, the screen on the HTC Desire is excellent.
Social - 9/10
Android already has a range of social networking features, but the HTC Desire has even more, thanks to the HTC Sense interface. Most notable of these is the FriendStream widget which aggregates all of your social feeds on the front screen of the HTC Desire so you can get the latest Tweet's updates and photos instantly.
Overall - 9/10
As stated, the HTC Desire is already one of the most successful Android phones on the market, and there is a very good reason for that; it's quite simply because the HTC Desire is also one of the best Android phones on the market. It is powerful, pretty, simple to use and exciting, and thus, the HTC Desire comes very highly recommended.

Apple iPhone 3G 8GB Black

Apple iPhone 3G 8GB Black

It was unique, it was sexy, it was the iPhone. But it lacked one feature that people were crying out for: 3G. Well, now it's back. That's right, Apple's wonderkid has evolved, and now comes with super fast internet access, and as the icing on the cake, built in GPS. It's unique, it's sexy, it's the amazing O2 iPhone 3G.
In 2007, a phone was unleashed that promised to revolutionise the mobile industry, with its unique interface, a huge raft of features, and a body sleeker and sexier than just about every other mobile phone on the market. It was the iPhone, and it was beautiful. The only thing it lacked, however, was 3G. Well, Apple have only gone and added to it, making what was already a cool phone into a serious player in the mobile world. It's the next evolution; it's the awesome iPhone 3G, exclusive to O2.
The iPhone Evolved...
It should be obvious, from the name iPhone 3G, exactly what the biggest addition to this unique mobile phone is. Unlike the previous version, this new iPhone sports 3G... and not just any 3G either, because what you get here is HSDPA, meaning speeds unlike anything else, supported by the super fast network on O2. It means you'll be able to surf the web, with the iPhone 3G on O2, nearly 3 times as fast as you could with the previous version. It really is ludicrously fast! Mind you, it's ludicrously brilliant, as well, because it's not some third-party add-on web browser, tacked on as an afterthought here! What you get in the O2 iPhone 3G is their super-fast, incredibly powerful Safari browser, letting you have an internet experience unlike ANY other phone!
Think Differently
It's not just 3G that's been added, however, because the iPhone 3G on O2 now has GPS built-in, as well. That opens up a whole host of new possibilities, with the pre-installed Google Maps. Imagine walking down the street and having the iPhone 3G telling you where your nearest restaurant or pub is, in real time. It's simply awesome. Of course, as well as these new features, all the stuff that made the first iPhone great makes a return. Things like the iPod music/video player built into the phone, featuring the same level of brilliance as that first version, not to mention the awesome Cover Flow mode, giving you a visual representation of your album covers on the screen of the O2-exclusive iPhone 3G, that you can flick through with just a tiny brush of your fingertips.
That Cover Flow mode shows off one of the coolest returning features in the Apple iPhone 3G, and that is the sheer number of different sensors and technology to let the phone figure out what position it's in. We've all seen it in the first version: that interface that rotates automatically when you tilt the iPhone over, of the simulation of water on screen, that you can make move just by shaking it about. Those sensors return in the iPhone 3G, along with the massive, gorgeous touchscreen, and quite frankly, it just wouldn't be the same without them! It really is a wonder of the mobile world, and in the opinion of a lot of people, this may be the best mobile phone ever made. It's the awesome iPhone 3G, available exclusively on O2.

Samsung Galaxy S

Samsung Galaxy S

The Samsung Galaxy S (aka the Samsung I900) is Samsung's take on an 'Android Superphone', so as you'd expect, it is very powerful. In making this their answer to HTC's world-beating Desire, they have made the Samsung Galaxy S one of the best Android phones on the market. But what is it that makes the Samsung Galaxy S so good? Well, there’s the massive four-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen and superfast 1GHz processor for multitasking and browsing the web to start with.
Design - 9/10
It has be said many times in the past, that Samsung don't know how to make an ugly phone. Their phones always look good; the Samsung Galaxy S is no exception, with its super-slim (only 9.9mm) body, and sleek aesthetic. If there's one complaint that can be levelled at the Samsung Galaxy S, it's that it looks a bit too much like the iPhone, but since some people would consider that a reason to buy the phone, it only loses the Samsung Galaxy S one mark.
Operating System - 10/10
Out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy S uses Android 2.1 (Google Maps, seach and email, plus thousands of apps), with Samsung's TouchWiz UI on top, so without doing any extra work, the user gets a brilliant experience, straight out of the box. However, for those prepared to put in a (very) small amount of work, the Samsung Galaxy S is upgradable to Android 2.2, also known as Froyo, which makes it even better. The Samsung Galaxy S also gets a lot of bonus points for including Flash Lite and the Swype keyboard, straight out of the box.
Hardware - 10/10
Here, we come to the main reason why the Samsung Galaxy S is so powerful; it's simply because in terms of hardware, the Samsung Galaxy S is virtually flawless. The processor is a 1GHz Hummingbird chip, which is not only fast but incredibly efficient, leading to a longer battery life. Not only that, but the Samsung Galaxy S includes a dedicated graphics chip, capable of pushing 90 million polygons per second; thus, it seems the hardware is optimised for mobile gaming, and the souped up hardware makes gaming on the Samsung Galaxy S a mind-blowing experience.
Camera and media - 9/10
The Samsung Galaxy S lets you capture life in HD. It has a five-megapixel camera built in, and although this is only average for a modern smartphone, it's a very good five-megapixel camera. Photo quality is excellent, and the Samsung Galaxy S can also capture video at 720p HD resolution. The camera also includes extras such as face and smile detection, so although it's not an eight-megapixel camera (which would have made the Samsung Galaxy S virtually perfect), it is very, very good. The phone has 16GB of storage built-in and that is expandable with a MicroSD card so there's no need to hold back.
Screen - 10/10
The Samsung Galaxy S is one of the first phones to use a next generation Super-AMOLED, and boy does it show! Put simply, the super-responsive four-inch touchscreen on the Samsung Galaxy S is a thing of beauty, with beautifully vivid colours, and deep blacks, that just aren't possible with anything other than an AMOLED screen. As it's also made from Gorilla Glass, the Samsung Galaxy S easily scores a perfect ten in this category!
Social - 10/10
Android has a great many social features built in (and thus the Samsung Galaxy S has those features as well), but the one of the great things about this OS is the Android Market, so any social apps that you feel are missing can be added to the phone really easily. However, what the Samsung Galaxy S already has is brilliant, whether it's Google services (like Googlemail) through the cloud, or the Youtube app. The Samsung Galaxy S also gets points for including the Swype keyboard, which indirectly makes the social features nicer (since typing on this keyboard is an experience nothing else has matched yet). Some testers have even said it's faster than a hardware keyboard, which is going to be useful when you're typing out Twitter updates on the Samsung Galaxy S.
Overall - 10/10
People have raved about the Samsung Galaxy S, and frankly, it is easy to see why; this is, quite simply, one of the most powerful phones ever made. In fact, the Samsung Galaxy S could be described as gloriously overpowered, but the great thing is that this power doesn't come at the expense of battery life or looks. So, do we recommend it? The Samsung Galaxy S is easily one of the best phones we've ever seen, so yes, it comes very highly recommended.

Blackberry Torch

Blackberry Torch
The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is a touchscreen phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It packs BlackBerry's new operating system, along with BlackBerry Messenger and Media Syncing so that you can stay in touch and listen to music on the go. Add to this a cracking five-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi connectivity and what you have is one very versatile BlackBerry phone.
BlackBerry OS 6.0
The BlackBerry Torch 9800 uses the new BlackBerry 6.0 operating system - new features include the WebKit internet browser, better menus, user interface and multimedia gallery.
BlackBerry Messenger and email
You'll always be able to stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues with the Torch. BlackBerry Messenger has the look and feel of PC instant messaging programmes. It allows group chat, as well as individual chat, and lets you know when people have read your messages and are starting their replay. It uses data, so does not use up a text allowance. The mobile phone has the intuitive HTC Sense user interface, allowing you to personalise your new phone and add shortcuts to all your favourite mobile applications whether it's news widgets or blogs. Instant email lets you access your email on your mobile phone.
QWERTY keyboard – touch and type
As soon as it was released, it became apparent that the HTC Wildfire was as good as everyone hoped with its integrated social networking and five-megapixel camera and HSDPA connectivity. Quite simply, the HTC Wildfire is one of the best mid-range phones money can buy.

Design - 9/10
The HTC Wildfire has been described as a budget version of the Desire, and so, the design is very much inspired by that phone. In other words, the HTC Wildfire is a very pretty phone, with looks that really set it apart from other mid-range phones on the market. The fact is that with the design, the HTC Wildfire doesn't look like a mid-range phone, and for that, it scores very highly.
Operating System - 9/10
The HTC Wildfire runs on Android, just like the top-end Desire, and like that phone, it runs on version 2.1 out of the box. For a mid-range phone, this is very impressive, and it gives the HTC Wildfire the same features set as would be expected in a top-end phone such as as access to all the apps in the Android Market. It also has HTC's intuitive Sense user interface so you can personalise the phone and add shortcuts to all your favourite mobile applications whether it's news widgets or blogs. Sense's Leap View allows you to view all your home screen panels at once with a tap or pinch of the screen. Thus, when viewed as a mid-rage phone, the HTC Wildfire has to get a very high mark for not coming across as a mid-range phone.
Hardware - 9/10
This is one of only two areas where the HTC Wildfire really shows its mid-range roots, and even then, it is only because the HTC Wildfire doesn't have a 1GHz processor. It does still have a 528MHz processor, though, which makes it reasonably fast, and the rest of the hardware is virtually indistinguishable from HTC's top-end phones, as the HTC Wildfire includes things such as WiFi, HSDPA and microSD card slot.
Camera and media - 8/10
The HTC Wildfire comes with a five-megapixel camera, and while this would be about average for a top-end phone, it is definitely above average for a mid-range phone. Media features such as the built-in Youtube app are a great addition to the HTC Wildfire, but they are somewhat let down by the smaller screen size. However, The camera's quality helps the HTC Wildfire pull back some marks . The Wildfire also has a music player that supports most digital formats including MP3 and AAC.
Screen - 7/10
This is the other area where the HTC Wildfire shows its mid-range roots, as the screen measures 3.2 inches. This is a decent size for a mid-range handset, but it is let down somewhat by the screen resolution, which comes in at a disappointingly low 240 x 320 pixels. This is a little disappointing, as everything else about the HTC Wildfire is so good.
Social and email - 9/10
The HTC Wildfire builds on the social features built into Android, by including the HTC Sense user interface, which adds in more features, including the FriendStream widget. This aggregates social feeds (from the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Flickr) on the front screen of the HTC Wildfire, putting social networking front and centre on the device. The smartphone's built-in Microsoft Exchange support synchs your email and calendar and allows you to look up anyone in your company's directory
Overall - 8/10
The HTC Wildfire is, without a doubt, the budget version of the HTC Desire, and as such it is one of the best mid-range phones on the market. There are a couple of things about the HTC Wildfire that disappoint, namely the low screen resolution and the slower processor, but neither of them are deal breakers. When viewed as cheap smartphone, the HTC Wildfire excels.

HTC Desire HD

The HTC Desire HD isn’t just like the HTC Desire, it’s even better! It runs on the latest Android 2.2 operating system, has a 4.3-inch touchscreen, an eight-megapixel camera with HD video recording, a 1GHz processor and much, much more.
Android 2.2
The HTC Desire HD uses the latest version of the Google Android operating system (2.2, aka Froyo). This means better web browsing and gaming on your phone, multitasking, Adobe Flash 10.1 support and the ability to turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot so you can share files between your phone and other devices. You'll also have access to all the apps in the Android Market, as well as Google services such as Google Maps and search.
HTC Sense
The mobile phone has the intuitive HTC Sense user interface, allowing you to personalise your new phone and add shortcuts to all your favourite mobile applications whether it's news widgets or blogs. Friend Stream also gives you the ability to put all your contacts, social networking and email in one place so that you can keep up-to-date with friends easily and simply.
Touchscreen
The HTC Desire HD has a 4.3-inch touchscreen display. The phone can run several applications at once and the touchscreen functionality means the applications can easily be flicked between using your fingers.
Fast processor
The smartphone's 1GHz Snapdragon processor means that it can run different applications at the same time without it slowing your phone down too much. It also allows you to open apps and navigate around your phone quickly and easily.
Connectivity
The HTC Desire HD has 3G, HSDPA (mobile broadband) and Wi-Fi providing an excellent mobile internet experience. The Desire HD's web browser gives you access to internet sites directly from your phone so you can check the latest scores, news and train times wherever you are.
GPS
There's no need to get lost with the HTC Desire HD - the smartphone's inbuilt GPS acts as a general SatNav device when used with Google Maps Navigation.
Eight-megapixel camera
The phone has an eight-megapixel camera with auto focus and HD video recording. Once you've taken your photos you can store them on your phone or share them with friends by uploading them to Facebook or Flickr.
Music Player
The HTC Desire HD has a music player that supports most digital formats including MP3 and AAC.

The iPhone 4 - it's super slim, super shiny, super sharp and super strong. The new generation iPhone has a brilliant screen technology and a much improved battery. This all combines with features such as Face Time, multitasking, better folder management, a five-megapixel camera, HD video recording and a huge apps store and iTunes.
Retina Display
The next generation iPhone has Retina Display which has four times the pixel density of the iPhone 3GS for an extremely sharp display and high resolution phone screen. Apple even claims the pixel count is so good that the human eye cannot distinguish between pixels making text and images magazine quality. The touchscreen is 3.5-inches which is ideal for using apps, watching videos and looking at photos.
New Operating System
The iPhone 4 will run on Apple's new operating system - the iOS4 – with its multitasking, improved folder management and unified inbox capabilities. It also allows you to move apps between devices so you can access apps and downloads on your iPad and your iPhone. The new approach to multitasking has been devised to help save your phone's battery.
Camera
The iPhone 4 has a five-megapixel camera with 5x zoom and an LED flash - the backside illumination sensor takes great pictures even in low light. And there's a new front-facing camera for when you want to be on the photo too.
There's also a HD video recorder (720p) that shoots up to 30 frames per second with audio. You can edit your films with the new iMovie app. Both cameras have geotagging and tap to focus.
Face Time
Face Time makes video calling possible on the iPhone. With just a tap you can see and speak to your family and friends, wherever they are. Face Time only works from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 and over Wi-Fi.
Great battery and processor
The battery on the iPhone 4 is 40% bigger than that on the iPhone 3GS. The phone also has an Apple A4 chip 1 GHz processor, just like the iPad has. The iPhone 4 has 300 hours standby time, 40 hours music play, 10 hours video play and Wi-Fi browsing, six hours 3G browsing and seven hours 3G talk time.
Apps
There are thousands of great apps to discover in the app store with more being added all the time. These include iBooks, an eBook reader and bookshop which are PDF-friendly, and iMovies, a brilliant app for editing videos and adding themes and music.
Music
The iPhone 4 has to be THE music phone with its iPod functionality allowing you to tap to play your music and watch great quality video. There's also the iTunes store – a huge digital entertainment store.
