In America, major professional sports are really "entertainment." The objective of professional sports is to earn revenue. Winning and losing are secondary to generating revenue. If no revenue is generated, professional sports teams can not sustain themselves. Amateur sports are subsidized and associated with helping build character, discipline, teamwork skills, and physical fitness. College sports were always different because major (legal) financial stakes were not involved as they are now. Yes, even before Name, Likeness, Image (NIL) deals, pay-for-college-athlete programs already exist. Before then, college sports were kept 'competitive' for the ethical sake of the sport, competition, and pure achievement. Illegal better was always implied to be 'bad,' and had its own place in society.
