I call it my Yummy Cake Batter Conditioner (Homemade)

After leaving the beach this past Thursday I notice my curls seem a little dry! So I decided to make a homemade deep conditioner to kick some life back into my dry, frizzy, wind blown , sun cooked curls lol!

I started gathering items from the kitchen and blending them together in a bowl...to my surprise the aroma was AMAZING! My sister walked in and wanted to eat it....even i was tempted to taste it but i didn't lol!

I decided to call it "Yummy Cake Batter" Deep Conditioner (YCB Deep Conditioner for short lol)! The result of this conditioner was way beyond anything I would have even imagined. Ever since going Curly Girl in January this year I have been having my little issues with frizz here and there...well this YCB Deep Conditioner just shockingly put an end to my frizz in 1 hour!!!!

I loved my hair so much the day after trying this recipe that I couldn't wait to share this with you guys!!!

Items you need: Whole Yogurt Vanilla, 1 egg, Honey, Almond oil (or you can substitue that with Olive oil), and Plastic cap to cover hair.

YUMMY CAKE BATTER DEEP CONDITIONER RECIPE

3 tbsp of Whole Yogurt (vanilla)

1 Egg Yolk (pout out the whites only use the yellow)

1 tbsp of Honey

2 tbsp Almond Oil

Pour all ingredients into a bowl and stir it all together until smooth.

Step 1: Co Wash hair first or Rinse thoroughly with warm water to rid of as much dirt as you can (no shampoo used during this step please)

Step 2: Get rid of excess water by ringing hair out or dabbing on a towel.

Step 3: start apply the Yummy Cake Batter Conditioner through out the hair, start doing this in sections to ensure every area of hair is covered.

Step 4: once every section of hair is covered use whatever is left of the conditioner and saturate the ends of your hair

Step 5: Place a plastic cap on head to keep in moisture and leave cap on for 1 hour ( you can go watch TV or cook dinner or read a book etc...)

Step 6: Rinse conditioner out with COOL WATER (do not use hot or warm because it could cook the egg into your hair)

Step 7: After you have rinsed all the conditioner out wash your hair with your normal shampoo...oh and feel free to use your hot water now lol ( I use Avalon organics peppermint shampoo with no sulfates)

Step 7: Condition as usual with your normal conditioner

Step 8: Style as usual ( I used my Kinky Curly Curling Custard)

After using this deep conditioner you will notice the hair is very moisturized and silky. I had absolutely no frizz the next day and curls were a bit more relaxed and hydrated!

Kids with curly hair are the cutest!!! Parents if you have kids with curly hair please don't ruin it! If you are not sure how to handle their hair find someone that can!

I really wish that my mom knew what to do with my hair back in the days because I feel that if she did know how to take care of it I would have never ended up relaxing my hair. Granted my mom didn't let me get my first relaxer until I was in high school (which i had to beg for), she still didn't know how to manage my curls. Most mixed kids or parents that have a different hair texture than their kids are somewhat lost when it comes to having to deal with a different hair type. My mom had 3 girls and all 3 of us have different hair textures so now that I know more about hair I really feel sorry for my mom...she had no clue.

Most parents back in the day would just relax or straighten their kids hair so they wouldn't have to deal with it, luckily my mom didn't relax my hair...she just put it in a ponytail everyday lol. I remember asking her to let me wear it down and instead of her washing it and leaving it curly she blew it dry, it started out all nice and straight that morning and as soon as the humidity hit it BAM...it was a chaka khan frizzy mess! lol

I am going to start a section on curly kids where I will do interviews so that parents with curly kids can see what other parents are doing. My goal is to start a network of curly people that you all can meet and discuss any concerns or questions you have!

Don't panic when you start to see new growth. Most likely that hair is not a true representation of your hair texture. For me, my hair grows out really puffy but as it gets longer it straightens out into waves. So don't freak out and run to get a perm, just let it grow

NO PERMS, CHEMICALS, SILICONES, OR SULFATES!!!! Ix nay on the flat ironing frequently...it not only dries out your hair but it kills your poor curls to point of no return!!! Keep your hair moisturized, moisture is very important. Play with your hair and experiment with a bunch of styles until you find one that suits you best in your natural state. Ming and Aoki, the daughters of Kimora Lee Simmons and Russell Simmons are still rocking the natural curls and I LOVE it!!!! Two thumbs up to Kimora for keeping the girls natural. Ming and Aoki have beautiful curls and they wear them well!

Most parents these days start straightening kids hair at an early age because its less work and easier to deal with, but in actuality they are hurting their kids...for one thing putting harsh chemicals that are strong enough to eat a coke can can not be safe to put on someones head and secondly its very damaging to the hair!

One tip I would give to anyone with curly hair would probably be to apply coconut oil at least once or twice a month to their hair. It really replenishes it and gives it extra shine and really softens it. Very healthy also HIGHLY recommended!

Celebrities seem to set the standard for fashion, make-up, and hair...these celebrities have shown us curlies that it is okay to sport the curls and still look good!

In a world where straight hair seems to be the norm is curly hair accepted? What do you guys think? Is it ok to rock the curls or should they be hidden lol? It seems to me that most people with curly hair straighten their hair on a daily basis to prevent the natural curl pattern from showing...WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS?

Say NO to your comb & brush!!!!

Curly hair should not be brushed and should rarely be combed! If you suffer from frizzy, bushy or undefined curls then you are not alone, most people do not handle their curly hair correctly. Curls are very sensitive and delicate, if you want to see your curls full potential you should not brush or comb them. If you must comb your curls, please make sure you are only using a wide tooth comb!

If you comb your hair, only do so while soaking wet...DO NOT ...I REPEAT DO NOT COMB YOUR HAIR AFTER IT IS DRY...if you do you will not only DAMAGE & BREAK your hair you will end up with a BIG BUSHY MESS!

Your curls have better definition when left alone!
When wearing my hair curly I only comb it with my fingers while wet and in the shower...I apply my conditioner and comb through hair with my fingers to remove tangles... afterwards I apply styling products and leave my hair alone. I ONLY air dry my hair and my curls are very defined and frizz free!

Honey & Olive Oil Deep Treatment

Do you have Dry, Frizzy or brittle hair???

Like I have said so many times Deep Conditioning is very important to maintain healthy happy hair! I heard a lot about how Honey is really good for the hair so I wanted to try it!

Honey is a humectant for hair which means it helps the hair attract and retain moisture which is very import for us curlies!!!!

HONEY & OLIVE OIL RECIPE

* what you will need: bowl, tablespoon, extra virgin olive oil, all natural honey, and a plastic cap to cover your head

*Get your bowl and add :

2 tbsp of all natural honey

2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil

*Stir it all together and put in the microwave for 20 seconds (let it cool if it is too hot to touch)

*Rinse hair with warm water (ring out as much water as possible do not towel dry)

*Seperate hair into sections and start applying your honey and Olive oil mix (make sure to cover ends really good)

*When done putting mixture over every section of hair place your plasitc cap over your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes to and hour

*When done you can either wash out or rinse out with warm water

I chose to just rinse it out with warm water and then apply conditioner because I like extra moisture but feel free to do whatever you prefer!

Kinky-Curly Hair Products Demo

OK so as you guys know, I have been testing out natural hair product as well as silicone and sulfate free product for a few months now! If you read my earlier blogs last year you should know that Mixed Chicks use to be my all time favorite product. Well since switching to CG (curly girl) products I no longer use Mixed chicks because the products have sulfate and silicones in them.

I heard a lot about a product called Kinky Curly so I tried it out! All I have to say about this product line is that I AM IN LOVE!!!!! My all time favorite is the kinky curly curling custard! It is a very thick gel and also makes your hair feel extremely weird while applying it but the results are GREAT!

I have heard a lot of mixed reviews on this product, some people hate it some love it! I guess it all depends on you and what you like...people with all different hair textures like this product so I don't feel it is a texture thing its more of a preference thing!

The main thing that I heard was that people have a hard time determining how much to apply and how to apply the product! I have attached a video by the owner of Kinky Curly...this video worked great for me! I watched this exact video before I even tried Kinky Curly and it came out perfect!!!

Straight Hair

Ok guys I have been "CURLY GIRL" for officially 2 months...well on March 17th it will be two months ( that's just 3 days away...so whose counting ha).

I decided to straighten my hair just to see what it looks like straight now that I'm an official Curly Girl (following Lorraine Massey's Curly Girl Method). I CANT BELIEVE HOW SHINY MY HAIR IS...don't get me wrong it has always been shiny but not this shiny!!!

I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO USING SULFATES AND SILICONE'S!!!!

Trimming Hair to make it grow faster!

Trimming hair will make it grow faster...this has been an on going myth for years! Trimming your hair is very important to growing long HEALTHY hair, however it does not make your hair grow faster.

On average hair grows about 1/2 inch per month. If you want your hair to look healthy and shiny, or if you experience split or thinning ends YOU NEED TO TRIM YOUR HAIR!

People please stop trying to hang onto dead, dry, frizzy, dull, thinned out hair just because you want your hair to be long. For one thing it looks horrible no matter how long it is, and for another thing its looks like your hair is dying to be cut (no pun intended)!!! I'm just going to be honest if i see a girl who has bra strap length hair that is dry, dull and split the first thing that pops into my head is THAT GIRL REALLY NEEDS TO CUT HER HAIR....and not that girl really has long hair (lol) seriously!!!!

Bottom line guys WE ALL LOOK BETTER WITH HEALTHY HAIR...no matter how long it is!!!!

TOP REASON FOR TRIMMING YOUR HAIR (AT LEAST) EVERY 2 MONTHS.
1. Healthier hair
2. Less tangles
3. More hair movement (better flow and body)
4. Less thinning
5. Shinier Hair

If you cant afford to go to a salon to get your hair trimmed, just trim it yourself or have a family member or friend do it for you...Just remember only use hair scissors not regular ones :)!!!! You can get hair scissors at any drug store, target, wal-mart or sally's beauty supply!

Curly Girl Day 6

Okay so today is Day 6 as a Curly Girl for me (following Lorraine Massey's Curly Girl Method),

I am willing to give this at least 2 weeks to see if I like it.

So far one Major thing that I have noticed is that I have FRIZZ and that is no fun! Second Major thing I've noticed is that my hair is no longer coming out in chunks when I co-wash it everyday...in fact its not coming out at all (MAJOR PLUS...I CAN PROBABLY DEAL WITH FRIZZ IF ITS NOT GOING TO BREAK). Last Major thing I noticed is that my hair feels like silk...it is as soft as I have ever felt it...feels like baby's hair lol!!!!!

So for all these good reason, I'm willing to keep going on my Curly Girl Journey.

Curly Girl Day 1

So remember the book I talked about a while back by Lorraine Massey called "Curly Girl" , well after reading this book I was very interested in trying this CURLY GIRL method.

Basically the CURLY GIRL method is removing sulfates and silicone's from your hair products ...because these ingredients dry out curly hair.

Today is Day 1 for me, I plan on trying this for a couple weeks to see if I notice any improvement, If I don't notice an improvement, believe me I will be back to using my silicone's lol!

So basically I washed my hair for the last time with a sulfate shampoo, afterwards I used a conditioner that contained no silicone's ( you can use any conditioner you want just make sure the ingredients don't include anything ending with the word -cone), and for styling I used gel (with no alcohol).

Actual products I used were :

Mixed Chicks Shampoo, Giovanni Organic Conditioner, and DevaCurl Arc Angel Gel

I have to admit, since this is the first day my hair is a little frizzy from using the sulfate shampoo... but my hair feels really soft and clean like there is no build up on it (if you use conditioners or products with silicone you can always feel a film over your hair).

So far so good, I will continue this process to see if I like the results and I will keep you guys posted!!! Wish me luck.

Almond & Olive Oil Treatment For Dry Hair

Happy New Years!!!!!

The weather is still pretty cold and dry at this time of year, so of course we still have to make sure we are moisturizing our hair regularly.

I usually do an Olive Oil Treatment to my hair as stated in my earlier post, but this time I decided to change it up a little by adding Almond oil to it!

My hair has never felt better! I take care of my hair very well by deep conditioning and doing olive oil treatments regularly but since we are in the cold season I have been doing them more frequently and also try new things. After trying the Almond & Olive Oil Treatment I found that my hair felt like brand new. It was the softest I have felt it in a long time, very moisturized and shiny! I plan on doing this routine more often.

Almond and Olive Oil Treatment

Items needed:
*Sweet Almond Oil
*Extra Virgin Olive Oil
*Bowl
*Shower Cap
*Large Towel

Step 1: Pour 1/2 cup of Almond Oil & 1/2 cup of Olive oil into a bowl, mix it up until blended well and then place in microwave for 20 seconds. ( you can use more or less than 1/2 cup of each oil depending on hair length and thickness...if you don't use all of the mixture keep it in a container for your next treatment!)

Step 2:Rinse hair (not wash) with warm water, try to rinse as much product out as you can.

Step 3: Part you hair into 4 sections and hold each section together with a hair clip

Step 4: Take first sec and apply Almond & Olive Oil Mixture (A&O), starting at roots and through to ends...place your finger tips into the A&O mixture and then massage your scalp with the oil. REPEAT THIS STEP TO ALL 4 SECTIONS OF HAIR!!!

Step 5: Take more A&O and saturate the ends of your hair

Step 6: Put on disposable shower cap and place a large towel on top of your head (this holds heat in)

Step 7: Leave shower cap on covered by a large towel for 30 minutes to an hour ( you can go watch a movie or eat dinner)

Step 8: After 30 minutes to an hour has passed you can wash out the oil and style as usual (or even leave it in if you don't have anywhere to go and just let it keep working)

I personally did this 2 days straight and loved the results...so be sure and tell me what you think!

*TIP Using almond oil with olive oil makes it a lighter treatment than Olive Oil alone...Almond oil is also GREAT for skin. If you have very dry skin apply almond oil to it at night and you will notice an amazing improvement within weeks.

Dry Hair (cont.)

Hi people,

Okay so yesterday I tried the Egg Yolk Conditioner and I wanted to tell you guys what I though about it. This morning I rinsed out the cholesterol I had in my hair over night and then I started My Daily routine the way I do every morning! If anyone would like to know what my daily routine is just ready my earlier blog titled "Daily Curly Routine".

The first thing I noticed is that my hair felt really soft and it was also a bit shinier today...so I will continue to do this Egg Yolk Conditioner when needed! If anyone else tried it be sure to tell me what you think!

I feel like curls always need moisture none stop, so during the winter we have to condition more often and use thicker conditioners than we do in the summer...one conditioner that produces amazing results in adding moisture is Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture Daily Treatment! If you have really thirsty curls try it out! I usually only use this product in the winter because it is very thick and heavy...but it works great and has a nice clean scent!

I also went hunting for the book called "Curly Girl" and I found it YAY!!!!!! So I'm going to start reading that and let you guys know if I learn anything good! We will definitely talk about it!
