And why not, it is an authentic baroque church built in 1599. The church's facade makes for a dramatic and romantic background in pictorials. The steps leading to the entrance looks grand especially if adorned with a red carpet. Any bride will feel like a queen.

As of 2010, Nuestra Señora de Gracia Parish costs 13000Php. It is inclusive of a priest and mass, 2 candles, simple flower decor with tulle (8 middles aisle and 2 main altar), red carpet, lighted chandelier and wedding usherettes. Red carpet is rolled out only inside the church. To have it extended up to the staircase, there will be additional 500 charge.
Booking at Nuestra Señora de Gracia Parish is advised at 9 months to 1 year in advance. 50% down payment is required to confirm your time slot. Sir Ryck, the man behind the church office, is very bubbly, accommodating and kind. =)

I Want to Win a Free Race Kit from Atom!

Not from Atom Araullo, but from THE Running Atom! =D So I'm joining his birthday promo, and hopefully I win a free race kit for the:

I only started commuting two years ago. Before that, I was forced to drive myself to wherever I have to go since I didn’t know how to utilize public transportation. My parents were against commuting, but I figured, hey I’m turning thirty. I should not be rendered helpless without a car. Besides, I was not really into driving. I hate traffic and I hate looking for parking.

In the two years that I started commuting, I’m happy to say that I have never been victimized by pickpockets, snatchers or thefts. Knock on wood that it never happens to me. Now I want to share with you all some general precautions I practice when commuting.

First of all, remember that if there is nothing eye-catching on you, no one will mind you. Do not wear any valuables like earrings, necklaces, rings or watches. If you do not have any of these, what else will make you interesting for the bad guys?

Also avoid wearing attractive clothes or heeled shoes (in the case of ladies). I always bear in mind that I should be ready for the worst when I’m out there. In case chaos ensues, I am ready to run. A little paranoia will do you good if that will make you precautious all the time. If you really have to wear attractive clothing, why not just bring it with you and leave the house a little earlier so there will still be enough time to change after reaching your destination.

Cellphones are the usual target of pickpockets nowadays because these are easy to resell. Some people like to hang phones from their necks instead of putting them in their pockets. Well sure, this practice makes life more difficult for snatchers but it really does not draw attention away from you. For me, it is still better to NOT get their attention at all. What I can suggest is to put your phone inside your pocket or bag instead, away from prying eyes. If you are wearing tight-fitted pants, even the slimmest type of phone may show. In this case, it might be better to put it inside your bag. Also put it in silent and non-vibration mode.

Try not to be too predictable. For example, a pickpocket trying to reach into your bag will look for your wallet. If you place all your money, credit cards and IDs in there, you lose them all in a snap. Try to scatter your valuables in different places. Another tip is to stitch an inside pocket in your pants like what I normally do. Here’s how it looks like:

I normally put my money and other important items here. There is no way that it can be stolen from me. This idea can also be copied in bags. Create an invisible pocket in your bag that only you would know. You can be more creative than this. Just remember to avoid being predictable.

It will also help a lot if you use products that are tested safe and secure to use. Pacsafe bags are popular because of their anti-theft features. I personally like the The MetroSafe 100 Hip & Shoulder Bag because I can easily hang it from my shoulders. It is slashproof, snatchproof and tamperproof! I’m sure to be extra-protected always when I’m commuting.

Finally, I believe that even if you choose not to follow the tips I shared above, the most important thing is to be alert and smart when commuting. Always be aware of what is going on around you. The bad guys out there are smart people themselves. They will prey on people who look careless and carefree. Do not be one of them! Be smarter and be safe.

What Makes Charice a Global Sensation

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"> <m:dispdef> <m:lmargin m:val="0"> <m:rmargin m:val="0"> <m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> <m:wrapindent m:val="1440"> <m:intlim m:val="subSup"> <m:narylim m:val="undOvr"> </m:narylim></m:intlim> </m:wrapindent> </m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

First, I must admit that I am a secret admirer of Charice Pempengco since her days as a contestant in Little Big Star, a locally produced singing talent show by ABS-CBN. I was one of those who silently disagreed when she only placed second runner-up in that competition when I was rooting for her to win. I think she was only 14 then but she already had a big voice. She could hit her high notes with ease. Clearly, she has the talent.

However, there are many other people around the block who could sing just as good. So what set her apart? In my opinion, what made her stand out was her showmanship which she made apparent even in her amateur days. This alone made her distinct among other contestants of Little big Star. She created her own style, what with her mic-tossing or foot-stomping act. That truly set her apart.

How did Lady Gaga, the late Michael Jackson or Madonna make it so big in the music industry? They all have (had) a way of endearing the crowd. Charice could also do that effortlessly. She exudes confidence whenever she goes up a stage to perform. It was really very evident even in her Little Big Star days. Part of Charice’s charm can also be her diminutive stature. It is a big wonder especially to Caucasians how such a small lady can belt out Celine Dion songs.

Flash forward to 2010 and we now see Charice as the biggest international star of Filipinos in their generation. I have seen her youtube video that became her ticket to the Ellen Degeneres Show. I have seen how she roused the crowd to their feet when she sang for the Ellen Show. I have seen how her performance brought tears to Oprah Winfrey’s eyes. Her debut album is a hit in many countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Thailand, and of course the Philippines. And now, I witnessed how Filipinos from around the world waited gleefully for her appearance on the second season of the popular American sitcom, Glee. She has definitely gone places, and she’s gone really far.

Charice is on a roll and she draws strength from her humble beginnings. It is probably the best thing about her. She keeps her feet on the ground while she continues to soar high. She could hardly speak spontaneous English when she was first interviewed by Ellen Degeneres. She took speech lessons (and still is taking speech lessons), and look at her now rubbing elbows with big names like Oprah, Justin Bieber, and Lea Michele. I listen to her interviews now and she can converse well in English, with a good sense of humor to boot.

I heard a few belittling Charice’s success but I believe that she has what it takes to make it big someday. To some, being on Glee may not be a big deal. However, as a Filipino, and seeing how local entertainers find it difficult to penetrate the international scene, being a part of Glee is a big feat. It brings recognition not only to Charice’s talent but also to the whole Philippines. I hope Charice takes an acting workshop too to be more versatile.

On the other side of the coin, there is a possibility too that acting opportunities for Charice (like in Glee) could be limited by her conservative ways. When Lea Salonga was her age (18 years old), Lea already did kissing scenes for Miss Saigon.

Movie Review: Sayo Lamang

I was really eager to watch Sayo Lamang because of two reasons. First, I so loved Tanging Yaman which is fast becoming a classic and top rated Filipino film. I can watch it over and over again. Second, because Sayo Lamang is directed by Laurice Guillien, the same woman who directed Tanging Yaman. I wanted to find out if Laurice Guillien could once again concoct a world class movie worthy of international applause.

But sad to say, SAYO LAMANG is one big flop!

I watched it on the third day of release. It was a Friday and I expected the cinema will be brimming with people pushing each other to get good seats. But no, the cinema was not even half-filled. I immediately sensed that I will enjoy my popcorn more than the movie. Here are the reasons why I think this movie flopped.

1. It was so commercialized. They invited all the mainstream actors of this generation to lure moviegoers. But sad to say, only a handful of them can really act. Sayo Lamang does not have the legendary Johnny Delgado who delivered a very powerful performance in Tanging Yaman. Sayo Lamang also did not have Gloria Romero, Cherry Pie Picache and Edu Manzano.

Aside from this, since they invited so many stars to be part of this film, each had to be given their own little story (a subplot if you want), thus be given a moment to be shot up close with mouth quivering, waiting for tears to fall. I can almost imagine the director raring to shout “Cut!” once those tears have been actually released! This brings me to #2.

2. A drama movie does not have to have a crying scene in every segment! It was simply too much! Each scene had to end with a close up shot of a character with tears falling from his or her cheeks. Why did they have to do that? It is an insult to drama actors who are measured only for their ability to feign crying.

3. They should have worked on the story instead. As it turned out, the story was too shallow and predictable, not to mention that the segments were so fragmented. It felt like jumping from one random scene to the next. Then the editor stitched it all together to make one lousy film. My personal life story is better without even trying.

4. None of the characters was developed. Take for example the role of Miles Ocampo as the youngest among the siblings. What was her purpose in the story really? She just kept on crying scene after scene while watching her siblings and father fight. But if you take her character out, the movie will still stand. It only goes to show that she played no important role crucial to the development of the story.

5. More than halfway through the movie, I was forced to ask my companion already why it was entitled Sayo Lamang. And then just before he could answer me, the song was blurted out on screen. It was the segment wherein the siblings were gathered around the deathbed of Lorna Tolentino. Was that the only reason? If I am missing out on something, kindly post a comment. But for me, the title itself was a flop.

This is sad. Star Cinema has all the means to produce quality Filipino films that could rival Hollywood. However, it chose to feed us with a lackluster movie with an off tangent title. I’m guessing that the indie film Two Funerals will be much better.

Honeymoon Ideas

    <m:smallfrac m:val="off"> <m:dispdef> <m:lmargin m:val="0"> <m:rmargin m:val="0"> <m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> <m:wrapindent m:val="1440"> <m:intlim m:val="subSup"> <m:narylim m:val="undOvr"> </m:narylim></m:intlim> </m:wrapindent>

Are you tying the knot anytime soon and looking for honeymoon ideas? Well, here are a few. Going to the beach seems to be very common already. You do that all the time, right? There must be other ways that newlyweds could spend special time alone before they go back to the real world.

First of all, your honeymoon will depend on your budget and personal preferences. Given that sky’s the limit in your budget, one of the best honeymoon ideas still is to tour Europe or North America. Spend a week or two exploring the popular and romantic cities and sights of each continent like Paris, Madrid, London, Sicily, Rome, and Niagara Falls. Take a relaxing and breathtaking cruise for a couple of days while enjoying your wine. You can also visit age old churches that you usually just get to see in history books.

If tour abroad is not possible at the moment, consider touring your own native land. You will be surprised that your country has much more to offer than what you think. Each country is blessed with beautiful sights that make it unique from the rest. Exploring your own country will be a good way to imbibe in you that nationalistic spirit amidst the celebration of marital union.

Another honeymoon idea is pack your bags and set off to climb a mountain. At first, you might be turned off thinking that there is nothing romantic in perspiring like a pig under the glaring heat of the sun while trying to reach the peak. But I tell you, it will be a totally different feeling once you reach the top. It will be very overwhelming to see the world from a different perspective. The clouds become water as you stand underneath them. The horizon will run away from your eyes like there is no end to it. It will be simply breathtaking and worth every step you take to reach the mountain top.

The more adventurous couple may also try other activities like skydiving and bungee jumping. There is nothing to fear in skydiving because you will not be left alone in air. A professional skydiver will escort you. There are many skydiving packages to choose from nowadays. It may include a photo and/or video of you while you are screaming your lungs out during your freefall. You may also choose how high you want to fall from. Usually the freefall may last from thirty seconds to about 1 minute. For bungee jumping, you may inquire from travel agencies.

If the couple loves water activities, they can go scuba diving, kayaking, parasailing or snorkeling. They can also try white water rafting and spelunking. It still beats just lying around at the beach and getting a tan.

I’m sure you will be able to think of better ideas for your honeymoon as you and your partner know each other better. Just remember to do something that both of you will like. And don’t forget to document your honeymoon! Bring a camera and video camera with you. Congratulations to those getting married soon!

Tips in Looking for an Apartment

    <m:smallfrac m:val="off"> <m:dispdef> <m:lmargin m:val="0"> <m:rmargin m:val="0"> <m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> <m:wrapindent m:val="1440"> <m:intlim m:val="subSup"> <m:narylim m:val="undOvr"> </m:narylim></m:intlim> </m:wrapindent>

There are many reasons why people go looking for a new apartment or any new house to live in. Most often, it is because two people are about to start their life together in marriage. Some are still single yet want to move out from their parents’ home and live independently after graduating from college. Whatever the reason may be, it is very important to be able to look for the right apartment for you. Thus, here are a few tips in looking for an apartment.

Budget

This should be your top concern. Live within your means. Find out what you want to get. If you get an apartment, you will have to deal with monthly rental rates while bearing in mind that the house will never be yours. Getting an apartment is cheaper and is good for those with tight budgetary constraints. However, if it can be afforded, investing on your own property is a better option. Monthly payments will come to fruition in time when you finally get to own the house after completing your dues.

Location

Apartments in prime areas generally have higher rates. For the same amount, an apartment in a prime area may only be a small single-storey unit while it can already be a big two-storey unit in another location. Consider also proximity of the apartment to your office. How many hours will be your travel time? The money you save on cheap rental rates may be wasted on gas and other transportation fees if your house is located far from your office. Not only that, but you could also be wasting precious time at home with your family if travel time is too long.

Structure

An apartment need not be newly built but at least it should be in very good condition. Examine the walls, ceilings, floors, toilet, bedrooms and other key areas. Are there leaks in the pipes? Are the wall paints starting to chip off? Is water coming in when it is raining? Ask the owner regarding maintenance and repairs. Some owners are willing to shoulder such expenses.

Environment

Be it in a prime location or not, always consider the environment. How safe is it to live in that apartment? If you have children, is the neighborhood safe for them? You can talk to your would-be neighbors first and they might share with you their personal stories in living in that vicinity. Also check proximity to a police station, bank, grocery, mall, hospital and school. In case of any emergency, how reachable are these outlets from the apartment?

Last but not the least, trust your gut feel. Sometimes, it is just unexplainable but upon seeing an apartment unit, you just know you want to live there. But just the same, weigh carefully the pros and cons before you finally sign the leasing contract.

More Tips On Buying Furniture

I recently wrote a few tips in buying furniture. The tips I gave were based from my personal experience. We are in the process of moving in to a new apartment and thus had to furnish the space before we could transfer. Along the way, I learned how to get furniture pieces I want without going overboard our set budget. We visited several physical shops to compare costs, examine the quality and basically look at all our options before deciding what to buy.

A friend who is into interior designing by profession suggested that aside from visiting physical shops, we can also try browsing online stores. It was definitely a good idea. In fact, our dining set was bought online and we are very satisfied with it. I was surprised that there are thousands of online stores selling almost everything we are looking for. So as an additional tip in buying furniture, I highly recommend browsing from online shops as well. It comes with many advantages, prime of which is the convenience of shopping from home in front of the computer rather than going to the tedious process of hopping from one physical store to the other. Aside from this, many online furniture store offer big discounts and promos to entice people to buy from them. Some would offer free shipping or delivery. Others even offer promotional coupons. Take for example Kohl Coupons. They offer many irresistible deals to consumers. They offer a wide range of home products to help people like us who are just starting.

The internet has greatly revolutionized the way people shop nowadays. I highly suggest that we make full use of the internet to our advantage like when buying furniture or other home products.

I am a Filipino. The Philippines Will Rise Above the Hostage Taking Drama.

Much has been said already about the incapability and incompetence of the local SWAT Team in handling the hostage scenario last night. People are quick to criticize after all, and they were bold to post their thoughts in social networking sites. It did not help that the local media companies aired the hostage scene live on TV so that the whole world was able to watch how the SWAT team was rendered clueless and helpless in trying to go inside that bus. As a Filipino, I was filled with shame while trying to take in all the things that were transpiring right before my eyes on TV. A lot of things entered my mind. Aside from the fact that the SWAT Team really lacked the proper training and equipment to handle the situation professionally, I also could not help but think about the future of the Filipinos and my country.

As we all know, the Philippines just instated a new president last June 2010. With President Noynoy Aquino, the nation is once again hopeful that big changes are about to happen. And then here comes a local police by the name of Rolando Mendoza. He lost his job and decided to siege a bus of Chinese tourists to demand his reinstatement. His selfish act was enough to send the Philippines in a bad light once again in the international scene. At this point, the Filipino nation is caught in a whirlwind of emotions while trying to process the embarrassing feeling of being in the headlines of CNN, BBC and other international news networks. The national leader of Hong Kong, Donald Tsang, just released an official statement expressing his disappointment at how the hostage situation was handled. He called on all Hong Kong citizens in the Philippines to immediately go back home. And to those who are planning to visit the Philippines soon, he discouraged them from pushing through. As hard as it was to listen to him say those words, it was true to a certain extent. If I were a foreigner, I would also think twice about visiting the Philippines after watching the fragility of our national police.

And thus, it is like being back to square one again when we are just starting to flap our wings once more. Philippine tourism will surely experience a big blow. The CNN just tagged my country as the worst place to visit. It is harsh and difficult to swallow, yet through it all, I do not want to lose hope. If I do not believe in my countrymen, nobody else will.

It was disheartening to read all sorts of angry comments thrown at the national police and media. At this point though, I find all these unnecessary. For me, it is just time to pick up the pieces once more and start all over again. We will continue to pick up the pieces no matter how many times it will take. The Philippines will not be put down by one violent and irrational ex-police. The Philippines will not be put down by one hostage drama that ended on a sour note. We will learn from this and we will earn the respect from people around the world.

My head is held high. I am a Filipino.
We are about to settle to a new apartment and have to furnish it ourselves. We browsed both physical furniture stores and online stores in trying to get the best deal. In doing so, I learned a few tips in buying furniture, and would like to share it here:

Budget
Budget is perhaps the top consideration of most people. It is very important to first set a budget and stick to this no matter what. The wide array of selections in furniture stores is easily overwhelming but just remember to get only what you can afford. Do not be engrossed into buying pieces of furniture that look beautiful offhand but later on find out that it does not fit your house or that it has no use for you.

Also consider mode of payment. Will you pay in cash or credit? Will you pay in full or in staggered mode? Sometimes, stores offer discounts for cash payments, but if your budget could not afford it, it might be better to go for staggered payments. Avoid falling into the debt trap as much as possible. If you choose to swipe your credit card, think if you will be able to afford paying for the credit in the succeeding months.

Material

Prices are largely affected by the types of materials used. I was personally not into this kind of detailing. A wood was a wood, whether it's from China or Malaysia. It made no difference with me. But when prices are already concerned, I had to learn it. At the very least, ask the salesmen the pros and cons of each type of material. Do not settle and believe what one salesman will tell you. Ask around and get as varied opinions as you can. Sometimes, you will find out that two salesmen will say contradicting opinions. Be open minded and hear everyone out before you decide what to buy. Again, the material you choose should be relative to your budget. For the bed frame, we settled for mahogany wood which was not really expensive yet sturdy enough for us. It also fit the rustic feel that we wanted to create.

Lifestyle
At the end of the day, remember that you will be the one using the furniture so no matter what other people say, choose what you think is suited for your lifestyle. In choosing a couch for example, we were torn between a leatherette or cotton upholster. Some people discouraged us from buying a leatherette because in summer, the material tends to absorb more heat. But later on, we still went for a leatherette upholster thinking that it is easier to wipe it clean with a cloth. A cotton or suede upholster will be more comfortable but the thought of vacuum cleaning it was unappealing. Another thing we considered was that one of the users sweats heavily and a cotton material will easily absorb sweat and make the couch smell. It was easier to wipe off sweat in leatherette. Spills and stains are also easier to clean in a leatherette couch.

Size
Do not undermine the importance of getting the exact measurements of what you are about to buy. Consider the size of the furniture relative to the floor area and height of the wall. What other pieces of furniture will be placed in that room? Will there still be enough room for walkway after everything has been arranged? Will it make a room look stuffed or spacious? Many people also take for granted the size of their doors. Make sure that the furniture you will buy will fit through the door. Ask the salesman if what you are about to buy is collapsible. Many furniture stores offer free disassembling and assembling.

Color
This may seem trivial but the importance of right color selection cannot be undermined if you are concerned with the overall look of your interiors. Basically, you want to create a unified effect, making sure that the furniture pieces blend well with the color of the floors, walls, ceilings, cabinets and other furniture. In our case, we wanted a rustic theme and thus favored the earth colors. We went for wooden dining sets, coffee table and center table. We opted for a light mocha couch to highlight it among the other pieces and make it the focal point of the living room.

There will be times when your preferred color is not on-hand. Sometimes, it is just out of stock and you will be asked to come back in the next few days. You can also ask if the store accepts customized orders to manufacture the color you prefer.

Other Useful Tips
Watch out for sales! If you are not in a hurry, wait for mall sales because this is the time they sell furniture at big discounts to make way for the arrival of new stocks. This is also the time when slightly damaged pieces are being sold at bargain prices.

Book Review: Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert

Eat, Pray, Love was such a big hit to me that when Elizabeth Gilbert delivered her second installment entitled, Committed, I did not have second thoughts buying it. Both books are more of a memoir rather than a novel because Ms. Gilbert recounts her personal experiences in coming up with her own definitions of a relationship (Eat, Pray, Love) and marriage (Committed). Her wisdom is borne out of the heartaches she went through while forming her own life rules. What is most admirable is her humility to accept what she lacks, a first step in improving oneself before moving on to another relationship.

Elizabeth Gilbert's first marriage did not work out. Since then, she became skeptic in the sacrament of matrimony. But unexpectedly, while soul searching in Bali, Indonesia, love knocked on her door again. She and her lover, a Brazilian named Felipe, was content not to rock the boat by getting married again (Felipe was also divorced). Felipe would periodically go in and out of the United States to be with Elizabeth and this setup was perfect for them. However, one day the US Immigration noticed this frequency and Felipe was barred from re-entering the country. The status quo was as good as it lasted, but if they wanted to stay together, they had to break the status quo. The only solution was for them to get married and legalize Felipe's citizenship as an American.

In Committed, Elizabeth Gilbert made a blow by blow account of the process she went through to make peace with marriage. For her, she did not want to get married just for her and Felipe's convenience. Rather, she wanted to re-explore it and understand it better so that this second time around, marriage will be much better and nurtured compared to her first union.

Throughout the book, perhaps the most important thing that Ms. Gilbert clarified is that she wrote that book to help herself and not for anybody else. Thus, once in a while, it is possible to come across something she holds true that may be contrary to a reader's belief. However, she is not concerned with that because it runs contrary to the main purpose of writing her memoir. One of the more debatable issues in her liberal views about marriage is that she is not keen on bearing her own child. It was one of the reasons that caused the downfall of her first marriage. With Felipe, this is not a problem because the man already had children from his previous marriage and had no desire anymore to bear more children from Ms. Gilbert. This alone immediately got things going for the couple. Many steadfast believers on procreation being the center of marriage will find Gilbert's stand quite radical, but it works for them so that's what matters most.

It was not an easy journey for Elizabeth Gilbert. She went as far as going to various places to learn about different cultures on marriage and find out what she could apply to her own life. It was all in the effort of grasping a realistic take on marital union that so many people uphold. It can all be very institutionalized but the fact remains that two people are in it together to make it as real and workable as possible. Commitment, compromise, trust and respect are just some of the words to live by every minute until death do you part.

I was tuned in to the ANC channel early in the morning because I didn't know what time it will start. Later on, it was announced that the SONA will start at 4PM. (Early in the day, a senate president and speaker of the house were elected in congress.) By 3PM, they showed the presidential car with a convoy of PSGs already headed for Batasang Pambansa. I was glued to my TV screen from hereon, not wanting to miss anything. It was like literally watching every move of the president, so to speak.

The first five minutes of his speech was an explosion. Obviously, P'Noy wasted no time speaking in conundrums. Indeed, if you will all pardon my language, it was a no bullshit kind of speech, and it was really amazing. Once he started detailing the anomalies of the past administration, there was no stopping him and his rhetorics.

I have heard a few criticize P'Noy's choice to use the vernacular when speaking to his constituents. In fact, at one point, I myself doubted if he could speak well in English. I know it was such an unfounded bias and I should be condemned for downing a fellow Atenean! But when I watched his interview on CNN Talk Asia, I suddenly felt foolish for thinking that Noynoy could not deliver in English. He simply prefers to speak in Filipino when talking to the Filipinos.

His first SONA may not be the best of speeches ever written, but I think it was one of the most powerful simply because it was in Filipino. And not merely was it in Filipino, but he used the everyday words of Filipinos. In this manner, he made it sure that Filipinos from all walks of life will be able to understand him. And that's what matters more after all, because he is talking to his countrymen and not to the international leaders around the world. In some sense, it is more dramatic and effective.

I secretly admire former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) when it comes to giving speeches because she is eloquent and exudes an air of confidence. She maintains eye contact to her audience and seems spontaneous about it. I thought Noynoy Aquino will pale in comparison in this department. But again, he surprised me when he hardly referred to his hard copy and spoke of figures and other nitty-gritty details from memory. He faltered once in a while but that was forgivable. He garnered no resounding applause in my opinion, but at least the audience knew when to clap in appreciation, even if only on cue.

Overall, I loved President Noynoy's SONA because I felt the sincerity as he stood in front of the congress and spoke before his countrymen. His exposes were bold and unforgiving, hitting Gloria Arroyo and her midnight appointees without fear. I told my mom that if Noynoy continues to be this way, he is putting his and his family's life in big danger. But knowing the Aquinos, they will not be daunted.
Everything stops when anything about them is featured on TV. What they did for the Philippines is simply momentous, something often just found in fictional novels. I have heard of the Aquino Museum for a couple of years now, and my interest was revived after watching President Noynoy Aquino's interview on CNN Talk Asia just a few weeks before Noynoy formally took his oath (the interview was held at the museum).

The entrance was immediately inviting with high ceiling, a spacious lobby and larger than life portraits lined up on one side. At the end of the row of portraits is a quaint chapel with glass doors:

The museum itself was basically only a picture story of what transpired from pre-martial rule up to Cory Aquino's rise to power as the president of a democratic Philippines in 1986. There are a few memorabilia displayed worth looking at too.

However, the tour will be rendered trivial if not for the highlight found at the center -- a simulated 3 x 5 meter cell where Ninoy found himself in solitary confinement for 7 years in Fort Bonifacio:

Ninoy was not only a very effective speaker; he was also a very talented writer. He described his imprisonment like a slow and painful death:

"I scratch the wall to mark the passage of each day
A day lost forever never to return - wasted, gone!
I watch the marching, lengthening column of my days
Passing me by in mournful cadence to their death
Like dripping drops of water from life's vessel
Drip, drip, drip
The leather jug will soon be dry
Empty like a body with no more blood and tears to shed
and then: Good-bye!"

Next is the gripping sight of the bloodstained white suit that Ninoy wore when he was assassinated:

I replayed in my mind the countless of times I have seen Ninoy's last moments abound China Air in 1983, before he was gunned down at the Manila International Airport. It is always the same overwhelming feeling whenever I see that video, and this same feeling was heightened ten times when I stood inches away from that bloodied suit. Only a glass encasing separated me from a precious piece of history. Truth is, 1983 of the Philippines can be summed up by a single piece of tainted white suit that defined the next ten years of a renewed democracy.

As I peeled myself away from that heart-wrenching sight, I moved on to view more framed pictures, stopping once in a while to read personal notes written by Ninoy and Cory. Both their diaries were put on display and it was opened on the page where they separately wrote their grief over the death of Jose Cojuangco (Cory's father). Ninoy wrote about his bereavement from his cell while Cory wrote hers from their home. I wished I could flip the pages and peer deeper into their thoughts, but again, the diaries were protected in glass cases. Reading their entries inspired me to also keep a journal and write down my thoughts spontaneously with my own penmanship!

In another entry, Ninoy wrote about his decision to go on a hunger strike and mentioned he was losing weight every time he stepped on the scale. I imagined a man writing about his progress in a weight loss program, except that he is not. I do not recall the exact words written but he wrote it in a matter-of-fact tone, even enumerating details to support his decision. Truly, it was an emotional time for Ninoy and his family, yet Ninoy still managed to justify his act of defiance in bullet points. He made it sound like selflessness is an everyday thing to do, like a breakfast staple.

Yet, Ninoy was very much a family man though he was not privileged enough to give them his time. While imprisoned, he requested to call up his son, Noynoy, to greet him on his 16th birthday. This was one of the most touching letters I've seen in the museum.

For P100 entrance fee, I'd say the trip to the Aquino Museum was so worth it. Once again, I had a renewed deep sense of respect and admiration for the Aquinos, especially Ninoy and Cory. I sure hope that more memorabilia will be added soon, especially with Cory's recent passing, and Noynoy's becoming president.

Noynoy Aquino Becomes the 15th President of the Philippines

    <m:smallfrac m:val="off"> <m:dispdef> <m:lmargin m:val="0"> <m:rmargin m:val="0"> <m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> <m:wrapindent m:val="1440"> <m:intlim m:val="subSup"> <m:narylim m:val="undOvr"> </m:narylim></m:intlim> </m:wrapindent>

I await yet another historic occasion in our land. Like most other Filipinos, I will not only look forward to the ceremonies but also watch out for some side scenes worthy of tabloid news. Will James Yap attend the inauguration after his estranged wife Kris Aquino admitted the end of their marriage? How will outgoing president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and incoming President Noynoy Aquino act on stage together? I heard that Mar Roxas will skip the rites. Will he change his mind and be visible on this day?

I have mixed feelings about Noynoy Aquino becoming president of the Philippines. I still do not believe that he is the best man to take on the reigns in leading this country. I still think that sympathy votes led him to where he is today. I still could not accept the fact that prior to his mother’s death he had no desire whatsoever to run for president. The sudden decision to heed the nation’s call to run for president after his mother’s death is still a flimsy reason in my opinion.

I am sure Noynoy has deeper reasons although I still do not buy the circumstances around his sudden candidacy. That being said, I believe in his integrity. In fact, I think that is his winning asset. I set aside my biases now and hope along with the rest of the Filipinos that major changes are about to happen. I do not believe that corruption is about to end. It is just impossible. But with Noynoy’s leadership, and if he keeps up to his promise, I hope that corruption will be significantly reduced in many areas of local and national governance.

Here’s hoping for the best in the next six years of the Philippines! Meanwhile, my television will be tuned in on the inauguration on June 30. It will be a grand showdown of Filipiniana dresses and Barong Tagalogs, a series of civil handshakes, occasional beso-besos, and obliging smiles.

In my own little cyberspace here, I congratulate Noynoy Aquino! I just know you will be a lot better than Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. That is enough for a collective sigh of relief. We are watching you, Mr. President!

Hachiko: A Dog’s Story Movie Review

Hachiko: A Dog’s Story has a very elementary lesson to tell. It was a simple tale of a dog’s love and loyalty for his master. I have seen a few movies about dogs but this one surely raises the bar if only because Hachiko lived in real life. That alone made the big difference.

Yes, the movie is based on a true Japanese story although the movie adaptation was American. Parker Wilson (Richard Gere) is a college professor who rides a train everyday to go to work. One ordinary day, as he steps out of his train, he encountered a lost puppy. Failing to locate the owner, he brings it home. The puppy had a dog collar with engraved Japanese characters that mean “Hachiko.”

Parker raises Hachiko. His wife and daughter grew to love the dog as well. Parker and Hachiko developed a silent and unexplainable bond between them. Every morning Hachiko would accompany Parker to the train station. He would go back to the train station in the afternoon to wait for Parker to arrive and they will walk back home together. But one day, Parker collapsed while at work and died. And Hachiko waited at the train station in vain.

This is where the string of emotions began. Days after Parker died, Hachiko continued to go back to the same spot in the train station where he will sit to wait for Parker. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. Parker’s daughter tried to adopt Hachiko but the dog would only escape to go back to the train station. He became a stray dog. The people around the train pity the dog and fed him for sustenance.

Hachiko’s display of unconditional love and loyalty is deeply touching. He did this for ten years and died on the exact spot at the train station where he waited for Parker’s return each day. I don’t like too much drama in a movie, but this one was an exception. I liked it primarily because it is rare to hear a story like Hachiko’s who could not and would not forget about this man who picked him up when he was little and took care of him.

I promise you, after watching this movie, you will not look at dogs the same way again.

Ara Mina for QC Councilor. I’m just judging Ara Mina!! There are many showbiz personalities turned politicians out there who were able to somehow prove to the public that they are worthy of the people’s votes and that they are serious about their jobs. Take Vilma Santos for example. I really think she made a big difference in Batangas. But Ara Mina? She’s a totally different issue. Judging from this short interview by Mo Twister, Ara Mina revealed a bombshell about herself, a big explosion that will make her chest diminutive in comparison.

Someone needs to talk some sense into Ara Mina’s head. Given the benefit of the doubt that she has the best intentions, how far could her good heart go to lead her constituents? Ara Mina for QC Councilor is one big joke. Wake up, Ara. This is not showbiz anymore. This is not acting with a series of takes at your disposal to perfect your scene. This is real life with real people dealing with serious issues. Here, you cannot buy your way by having a deep cleavage and bouncing pair. Good heavens, they will need much more than that.

The residents of QC WILL NOT accept excuses like “I was always out so I did not have time to watch the news on TV,” or “I get depressed watching the news.” Please save the little respect people have of you. Go back to peeling off clothes behind the reel and leave QC governance to more capable hands. You shame not only your father, Chuck Mathay, but also your intelligent colleagues in showbiz.

Ara Mina is running for QC councilor, second district. Though I live in the first district, I’m still very bothered. I’m bothered because I know Ara Mina has good chances of winning not only for her popularity but also because of her physical endowments. I’m bothered because this is just the second district of Quezon City we’re talking about. What more on the national level? Who will the majority vote for senators, vice president and president?

If Ara Mina still wins a councilor seat even after the proliferation of this video, heaven forbid, good luck to Quezon City.

Vote wisely, Filipinos! Change is in our hands.

Review: Eat Pray Love

"There's a reason we refer to 'leap of faith' - because the decision to consent to any notion of divinity is a mighty jump from the rational over to the unknowable, and I don't care how diligently scholars of every religion will try to sit you down with their stacks of books and prove to you through scripture that their faith is indeed rational; it isn't. If faith were rational, it wouldn't be - by definition - faith."

Eat Pray Love recounts the detailed bits of the Elizabeth Gilbert's sabbatical leave from her usual world to dedicate one year of her life to traveling and soul-searching. Gilbert, the author, is jumping out of norms when she decided to end her marriage with a divorce, quit her job, and travel to 3 different countries to come to terms with herself again.

Incidentally, these 3 countries all begin with "I" - Italy, India and Indonesia. For 4 months in each country, Elizabeth tried to learn new things. In Italy, she learned the pleasure of eating and speaking Italian. In India, she confined herself to a meditation camp where she found her own definition of prayer. And finally, in Indonesia, she tried to find balance between the earthly and the divine.

Just how many of us could really do this? If I can sum up this book in one word, I'd say it's all about faith. And it's not just about believing in a great transcendent being, but in my opinion, also more about believing in oneself against all forms of rationality.

I am forever in search of my own god whom I can totally trust and depend on. Much to my dismay, I have been a very passive traveler of this temporary world. Thus, it's the main reason I am totally gripped by Elizabeth Gilbert's book, Eat Pray Love. She didn't wait for any big and dramatic transformation upon herself, instead changed her life by taking small and rather tedious steps.

Elizabeth Gilbert charmed me with her very candid narrative that I felt I was only listening to her storytelling instead of reading it. I loved her honesty, from how she gained 23 lbs because of all the eating in Italy, to succumbing to her physical sexual need. Perhaps, her honesty is one of her strengths that led her to a very magnificent transformation. After all, it all starts with one's acceptance of insecurities and misgivings.

Incidentally, Eat Pray Love is now a movie. It will be shown this year starring Julia Roberts.
Today marks the big day for both Serena Williams and Justin Henin as they face each other in a few hours in the Australian Open 2010 Ladies Singles Finals.

Watch the Serena Williams vs Justin Henin finals game live in various streaming websites in the internet. You can catch a live scoring at the Australian Open 2010 official website.

Serena Williams will be out to defend her title today and break the pattern of winning at the Australian Open only in odd numbered years.

Justin Henin will continue to live the dream. After 20 months of hiatus in the professional arena, she comes back to Australian Open as a wild card entry, and sweating her way to the finals to finally meet world's number one today. She has nothing to lose and everything to gain.
This should be exciting to all tennis fans!
Are you curious about how to become a ball boy in the Australian Open? It is a most coveted job for every tennis fanatic. It will be an exciting two-week work that will hardly feel like a job at all as you will be overwhelmed by all the famous faces of tennis you usually just see on TV. Many tennis fans will fight to fill in the position of a ball boy and get a chance to feed balls during the games of their favorite players.

There are many jobs available at the Australian Open, one of which is a ball boy. To qualify for one, they will do a series of battery tests to gauge your eye-hand coordination. Also, sad to say that there is an age limit. If you will notice, those ball boys now at the Australian Open are around from twelve to fifteen years old only. But there are many other jobs available at the Australian Open. And here, I found this list:

• Ballkid Operations Team
• Court Services and Court Operations
• Courtesy Car Drivers
• Corporate and VIP Hospitality
• e-Communications Volunteers
• Grassroots Promotions Volunteers
• Information Services Staff
• Media Staff
• Merchandise/Retail Staff
• Office Administration
• Operations Staff
• Player Medical
• Site & Safety Staff
• Statisticians
• TV Liaison

Of course, it's too late now to be hired for this year's Australian Open, But for next year at the Australian Open 2011, you can start sending in your applications! You better hurry because they will only be accepting applications until the end of March 2010. And should you get accepted, there still other things to prepare, like your working visa for example, if you are not a resident of Australia.

Meanwhile, exciting games are ongoing at the Australian Open 2010. Watch it LIVE on your TV screens!

Maria Sharapova Returns in Top Form at the Australian Open 2010

    <m:smallfrac m:val="off"> <m:dispdef> <m:lmargin m:val="0"> <m:rmargin m:val="0"> <m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> <m:wrapindent m:val="1440"> <m:intlim m:val="subSup"> <m:narylim m:val="undOvr"> </m:narylim></m:intlim> </m:wrapindent>

After all, she was the defending champion. But for Sharapova, there is no rush to glory. And now the waiting game is over as she comes back in top form to win another grand slam here in the Australian Open 2010.

She gets her confidence from winning the title two years ago. But she will be in for some tough games this year as many old favorites are also returning. There’s Kim Clijsters and Justin Henin for starters.

There’s just three days left before Australian Open 2010 starts! Maria Sharapova returns with a big bang, and she’s ready to face the battle. Don’t forget to watch Australian Open 2010 live on your television and root for your favorite players!

There's just ten days left for all tennis fans to count before they can get to watch Australian Open 2010 live on their favorite sports channels! I, for one, am all giddy about it. After new year, the next best thing I always look forward to is the Australian Open, the first in a series of grand slams every year.

There are a couple of interesting things to look forward to in this year's Australian Open:

1) Maria Sharapova is out to play again after her shoulder injury pushed her to the sidelines last year.

2) Justin Henin is also back from her retirement! She seems to be in perfect shape and raring to display her strong backhand again. The world awaits if she can equal Kim Clijsters' very successful comeback. She holds 7 grand slam titles so far. Will her wildcard entry to this year's Australian Open give her her 8th title?

3) Defending champion and controversial Serena Williams is not banned from joining this year's AS Open after all. Last year she figured into a verbal dispute with a lineswoman in an uptight match against Clijsters in the US Open.

4) Many spectators are setting their eyes on Jelena Dokic who wowed the crowd last year with her exemplary display of tennis skills on court. She'll be one of the toughest lady contenders in this year's AS Open.

5) Of course, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are contemporary classics. Grand slams will not be complete without them. The fight for number one continues for them in just a few days!

We are all rooting for our favorite players. I sure will be glued on my TV as the first grand slam commences in a few days time. Don't pass up this chance to watch the Australian Open 2010 live! Game on!

Happy New Year!

Happy new year bloggers! I dedicate my first entry for 2010 to all those people who went to work on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day to make this joyous season very NORMAL to us!

I spent New Year's Eve with my beau, and then later on with my sister at Bonifacio High Street. While waiting for the clock to strike 12, my sister and I chilled at Caffe Puccinni. It was a good way to observe the people around us, especially those who stayed up late to work so that the rest of us could enjoy a very normal holiday. I mean the staff at the hotel who worked just as if it was an ordinary day. I mean the waiters who served our cocktail drinks so we can toast to 2010. I mean those three gentlemen who moved from table to table with their guitars to serenade the diners. I mean the security guards at The Fort who roamed the vicinity to make sure everything was kept in order. I mean that woman behind the parking ticket booth who waited up to the last car to leave the parking lot after the fireworks.

I may not be able to mention them all, but they were everywhere. These people spent precious moments away from their families, away from their loved ones, on a very special occasion to make the holiday season very special to us. Without their sacrifice, we could not have gone on with our usual festivities and traditions. It is no joke to work on a holiday, especially if it's New Year's Eve. And so I appreciate their efforts and sacrifice. Unknown to them, they have made a lot of people happy. At least, they made me happy.

Good luck to all of us in 2010! Cheers!

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS Wishlist!

I had a chance to see last night in Trinoma, National Geographic's Big Blue Whale Exhibit. Manila is the last leg of the Aisa tour, and they partnered with the Ayala Malls to make their rounds. National Geographic aims to disseminate information about big blue whales which are now considered endangered species. The sculpture on display is a life sized 2 month old big blue whale crafted magnificently in Australia.

Big blue whales are the largest breed of species in this planet. They are bigger than dinosaurs, weighing more than 200 tons! They can measure up to 30 meters wide.

Featured in the big screens around the sculpture is a documentary about big blue whales being "tagged" to better track their progress in the wild.

Catch the National Geographic Big Blue Whale Exhibit for a limited period. Here are the schedules:

Glorietta 5: November 17 - 26, 2009
