On the Corner, podcast #24: Hello, Terry Steinbach!

How
former A's catcher Terry Steinbach got dragged into this week's podcast, I'm not
sure. But Steinbach, Hulk Hogan, Vince Young and Rodney Harrison all get their
fair share of attention this week On The Corner.

We start with Harrison, and I clarify my position a little bit on why I both
loved and disapproved of the man. Danks and I also discuss how we think he'll do
as a studio analyst on The Peacock, whether or not we'd vote him into the Hall
of Fame, and whether or not we think he'll eventually get there.

Topic number two is Titans quarterback Vince Young, the comments he made this
week, and where his career is heading. What's VY's ceiling? Is Jeff Fisher
kidding himself when he says he believes that Young will eventually be the
Titans starting quarterback? And how does Terry Steinbach feel about any of
this?

Also, the hateful e-mail of the week (or lack thereof), the Hot Routes, and
the standard awkward outro.

On the Corner, podcast #23: Vick's next step; top five clutch QBs

know I said yesterday that we'd be taking a little break from all the Michael
Vick talk, but I forgot the mention that that applied to text-based posts only.
Podcasts are still fair game.

Danks and I delve a little further into the topic this morning, and discuss
if we think Vick will play a down of football this season, and if so, in what
league? And if it's the NFL, what kind of teams could use Vick's unique
services?

From there, we turn to the list of the
top five clutch quarterbacks in today's NFL from earlier in the week. Some
of the more popular concerns are addressed, concerning the inclusion of Peyton

On the Corner, Podcast #22: Reluctant Brett Favre talk

Believe
me, I'd love it if I could just completely ignore the Brett Favre situation
until something real and concrete happens, but I just can't do that. My job
demands otherwise. So what we have on the podcast this morning is two people
talking about a subject that they both find unpleasant. Danks and I talk about
the imminent return of Brett Favre.

Two highlights of the conversation I'd like to point out: 1) the crucial
difference between saying that Brett Favre shouldn't continue to play football
and taking issue with Brett Favre's behavior through the entire process, and 2)
the plight of poor, poor Sage Rosenfels.

There's some other stuff, too. For example, there's the succinct beauty of
the abusive e-mail of the week, and I believe that lead to an unofficial record
number of "bleeps" in one podcast. We hit the Hot Routes, of course,
but I also regret to tell you that we had no mailbag this week.

Can't blame that on me, though. You guys let us down. We didn't have a single
acceptable question for the mailbag. I hope this makes you feel great shame, and
I hope it strengthens your resolve to bring strong questions next week. Think
about that. As your punishment this week, I make you get to know Danks in a way
you probably didn't want to.

Shutdown Corner, SB Nation and the greatest mock draft ever

Yeah,
that's right. I called it the greatest mock draft ever, and I mean it.
You know why? Number one, I feel very good about the quality of this mock draft.
Number two, after the draft, everyone forgets about all mock drafts, so even if
it turns out to be terrible, it doesn't really matter.

But it is good. Maybe not in the sense of, "Oh, this is exactly how the
draft is going to go," but I think it's an entertaining listen and provides
a pretty decent little primer on the draft and its prospects as we get closer to
Saturday. I think you'll enjoy it, as a part of course, of Yahoo!'s outstanding draft coverage.

Here's what we did. We asked all 32 of SB
Nation's NFL blogs to call the Shutdown Corner hotline and make the picks
for their teams, in order, and see how the draft played out. Meanwhile, Danks
and I would sit back in the studio, take the picks as they come and give them the Mel Kiper treatment.

The final product is this 90-minute audio mock draft that plays much like a

I called it the greatest mock draft ever, and I&nbsp; mean it. You know why? Number one, I feel very good about the quality of this mock draft. Number two, after the draft, everyone forgets about all mock drafts, so even if it turns out to be terrible, it doesn't really matter. But it is good. Maybe not in the sense of, &quot;Oh, this is exactly how the draft is going to go,&quot; but I think it's an entertaining listen and provides a pretty decent little primer on the draft and its prospects as we get closer to Saturday. I think you'll enjoy it, as a part of course, of Yahoo!'s outstanding draft coverage. Here's what we did. We asked all 32 of SB Nation's NFL blogs to call the Shutdown Corner hotline and make the picks for their teams, in order, and see how the draft played out. Meanwhile, Danks and I would sit back in the studio, take the picks as they come and give them the Mel Kiper treatment. The final product is this 90-minute audio mock draft that plays much like a live draft. It's got your typical risers and sliders, surprise picks, off-the-board picks and green room sob stories. I'm pretty psyched about it. I know Danks and I had fun putting it together, and the help we got from SB Nation was fantastic, and you should give it a download and see what happens with your favorite teams or players.
On The Corner, Podcast #20: With special guest, Eli Manning

got a very special podcast this week, and this time, I'm not just saying that
because it's something that I like to say. We've got a guest, and it's a guest
you've heard of ... Mr. Eli Manning. See, told you it was a special podcast.

I talk to Eli about his offseason, how disappointed he was to see Plaxico
Burress cease to be a Giant, as well as what it's like to be speed-licking in a
television commercial. We try to get to know Eli the person, not just Eli the
football machine ... but as it turns out, Eli the person might just be Eli the
football machine.

He also talks about missiong.com,
and a project Gatorade's putting together where two 1993 high school football
rivals will put on the pads and play again, 16 years later. When I first heard
about this, I'll be honest, I thought, "Oh, terrific, out of shape old guys
playing football." But go and
check out the videos. It actually does seem kind of cool.

And in addition to Eli, we've got all the standard features ... your Hot
Routes, your Abusive E-mail of the Week, your Mailbag. In there, we touch on a
lot of things, including Pat Bowlen's responsibility for what's gone on in
Denver, the Cowboys secondary, and the huge new contract signed by Jaguars
running back MCJ.

On The Corner, Podcast #19: Pacman, T.O., and Jay Cutler

week, another podcast, and another Terrel Owens discussion. At some point, I'm
going to have to write the man a thank-you note for providing all the blog
material.

Pacman Jones is my favorite subject, though, as Danks and I are split on
whether or not he'll play in 2009. I think he will, and I think it'll be a good
decision for whatever team picks him up, but Danks is mean, unforgiving, and has
a heart made of coal. He's also probably right.

And, as always, we hit the mailbag and take your questions, which, this week,
deal with Kurt Warner and Jay Cutler. I also read an inspired and absurdly
profane bit of hate mail I got this week from a fan of the Offseason Champion Washington Redskins., so you won't want to miss that. And we
close again with what really grinds our gears ... Danks talks about the pity
we're all forced to take on the Detroit Lions, and I offer a meager tribute to
15 seasons of ER (which
was marvelous last night).

like everything else that exists in the NFL universe right now, the podcast was
dominated last night with Terrell Owens talk. Chances are, your favorite team
was mentioned in connection with Owens, because that's kind of what we (and the
callers) did: How about Terrell Owens on this team? How about Terrell Owens on
that team?

But the mailbag also took us to subjects like the New York Giants defensive
line, and whether or not the Redskins have climbed up the pecking order in the
NFC East.

We also hit the trusty old standards, like hate mail I've received through
the week, and the Hot Routes. We've mercifully put to bed "The Picks
Segment," though, and replaced it with "You Know What Really Grinds My
Gears," a segment where we just whine and moan about things we don't like.

Oh, and you might have noticed the snazzy new logo there. I was just looking
for something that stood out a little more in iTunes. I was looking for the show
there yesterday, and glanced over the logo about five times before I finally
noticed it. That's probably not what you're looking for in a logo.

This was originally recorded on Thursday night,
but I didn't get to post it until today due to some technical difficulties along
the way. But it's not too dated, and I think there's still enough here
that it could help ease your case of the Mondays.

Danks and I start by noting some of the week's more interesting hate mail, we
hit the Hot Routes, and then it's on to some free agency talk. Most of the guys
we mention have already found new homes, so you can either note that we are
fantastic prognosticators, or you can laugh at our absurd predictions. I won't
spoil it for you by telling you what happened.

From there, it's on to the mailbag, which, I'm sorry to say, will be the swan
song for Steve in Riverside. He goes out with a bang, though. We also get
questions about Pat White's combine performance and where he projects in the
league, and about practical everyday uses for the outro music. Then we fumble
through another awkward outro.

been over two weeks since you've been treated to Danks and I making
sweet love to your earhole, but we're getting back on the podcast grind
for Friday morning.</p><p>It'll be the <em>On The Corner Free Agency
Extravaganza</em>, and we'd like to have your questions. If you've got
questions about where your favorite player might end up, or what your
favorite team might do, give us a holler. (304) 933-4488. I don't know
if we'll be able to answer your questions with any accuracy at all, but
I promise you that we can babble until we spit out something that at
least <span style="font-style: italic">sounds</span> like an answer.</p><p>Not
that your queries have to be limited to free agency, though. Spout off
about anything that's on your mind. Again, the number is (304)
933-4488. Make daddy proud.</p>

On The Corner, Podcast #16: What will be the lasting legacy of Super Bowl XLIII?

Thursday, and now that everyone's had some time to digest and reflect, Danks and
I look back at XLIII and try to figure out what will stand out about this game
historically.

This, of course, leads to a debate about the Kurt Warner fumble call at the
end of the game that "wasn't reviewed," except it was. I'm right about
this, and Danks is wrong, but I recommend giving it a listen anyway, because
it's kind of cute that Danks thinks he's right.

From there, we tag team the ol' mailbag, which touches on what has to happen
for the Lions to experience a quick turnaround, Tony Dungy, what to do with your
Sundays now that the NFL is gone, and the fluid nature of the podcast's genre.

And, obviously, you don't want to miss the special Pro Bowl edition of The
Picks Segment.

Three things that can't have their own post:

First, did anyone else notice the
subtle "Fringe" promo during FOX's Eagles/Giants game on Sunday?
I'm not sure promo's the right word for it, as no one ever mentioned the show,
and no one who doesn't watch the show even noticed anything. But the creepy
bastard pictured above occasionally appears randomly at the scene of notable
happenings during the show "Fringe", and there he was, popping up at
Eagles/Giants game. Thanks to Mike for the tip.

Second, I was honored to be a guest on Dan
Levy's "On the DL" podcast last night. It's a lot like the
Shutdown Corner podcast, except it's good. At least, it is until
they have me on to drag the show down.

And lastly, this one deserves its own post, but I can't post it because of the naughty language. Take a second out of your morning to watch this video of embittered
Giants fans beating the hell out of cars in the parking lot after the
Eagles/Giants game. It seems like a very healthy outlet for frustration, as long
as you consider significant personal danger and destruction of property healthy.

another guestless week here On The Corner, which means more of me speaking
extemporaneously, and that's not good for anybody.

We try, though. We briefly talk about some Pro Bowl snubs in a conversation
that could have been a lot longer. Danks cut it off, though, which is probably
good, since now's about the time when people stop caring about that sort of
thing.

From there, it's on to the mailbag, and the guy who called last week who
wanted to know about uniform pants this time wants to know about uniform number
fonts. We also get a question about 8-8 teams and if they deserve a spot in the
playoffs, even if it means that an 11-5 wild-card candidate gets left out.

In the world-renowned "The Picks Segment," we tackle the big No.
1-seed games this weekend, Steelers (-1½) vs. Titans and Panthers (+3) vs.
Giants. We also take a look at the semi-intriguing Saints (-7) vs. Lions game.

On The Corner, Podcast #10: Rookie of the Year, a McNabb-free future in Philly, and fighting Bill Belichick

It's
our tenth podcast, and you know what that means: You get to listen to this show,
and afterwards, say out loud, "They've done this ten times, and they're still
not any better?"

We start off by talking about our choices for the NFL's Offensive Rookie of
the Year, and Danks and I have a difference of opinion there. Then we talk about
the impressiveness of this year's rookie running back class, and then it all
kind of devolves into the two of us just naming rookies.

From there, I make Danks sing us into the next segment, "Tag Team the
Bag," in which we answer mailbag questions from readers. We had some good
ones this week, and I'm not just saying that because that odd (I mean that in
the nicest of ways) German fellow didn't call this week.

We're asked about the future in Philadelphia, and certain fans get their wish
that Donovan McNabb is dumped. We talk about which teams in the NFL have the
most handsome pants, and then a caller wanted to know which NFL personalities
Danks and I would like to fight (while not taking into consideration how badly
we'd lose those fights). The answers may surprise you.

In the picks segment, we target three of the weekend's biggest games:
Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore, the Giants vs. Dallas, and tonight's Saints vs. Bears
contest.

If you've got questions for next week's mailbag, I implore you ... (304)
933-4488.

Then we talk about the impressiveness of this year's rookie running back class, and then it all kind of devolves into the two of us just naming rookies. From there, I make Danks sing us into the next segment, &quot;Tag Team the Bag,&quot; in which we answer mailbag questions from readers. We had some good ones this week, and I'm not just saying that because that odd (I mean that in the nicest of ways) German fellow didn't call this week. We're asked about the future in Philadelphia, and certain fans get their wish that Donovan McNabb is dumped. We talk about which teams in the NFL have the most handsome pants, and then a caller wanted to know which NFL personalities Danks and I would like to fight (while not taking into consideration how badly we'd lose those fights). The answers may surprise you. In the picks segment, we target three of the weekend's biggest games: Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore, the Giants vs. Dallas, and tonight's Saints vs. Bears contest. If you've got questions for next week's mailbag, I implore you ... (304) 933-4488. You can listen right here. Or download it right here: Click to download.
On The Corner, Podcast #9: Detroit and Thanksgiving, Iverson as their best QB option, and all about the Welker hit

week On The Corner, Danks and I go old school and take it back to the days
before we had guests. We start things off by talking about taking Thanksgiving
away from Detroit, and whether or not that's the right thing to do. That turns
into a discussion about the possibility that Allen Iverson is the best
quarterback currently living in the city of Detroit.

From there, we go to the Ryan Clark hit on Wes Welker, and the shocking news
that it wouldn't be drawing a fine. If Welker didn't take it like a champ and
get up immediately, might things have been different?

Then we tag-team the mailbag, including questions about fans' moral
responsibility to feel bad for injured players, Norv Turner's face, and the
limited future of Wade Phillips. In the Picks segment, we turn out attention to
this week's contests between Kansas City @ Denver, and Dallas @ Pittsburgh
contests.

to podcast #8, which could possibly be the best one ever and still be really,
really bad. Up first, Danks and I talk about the AFC East race, which has turned
into probably the most interesting division race in football. I like the
Dolphins (for YOU, Crazy Fish Guy), and Danks argues for the Jets.

From there, we have another special guest ... this time, the talented and
knowledgeable Stephanie Stradley of the Houston
Chronicle and the FanHouse.
We talk some Texans football, and you know, the Texans turned into a more
interesting subject than I thought they'd be.

We close it out with the mailbag, a feature I like more and more each week,
and then the cleverly-named "Picks Segment." Again, if you've got
questions, the number is (304-933-4488).

And by the way, if you subscribe through iTunes, if it's not too much hassle, could you leave a Customer Review there? We've got one, but it still looks so barren. I'd appreciate it.

Quantity, anyway. We've got almost 40 minutes of podcast here, and a small portion of it is either informative or entertaining.

First, Danks and I talk for a short while about what's more likely, Detroit going 0-16, or Tennessee going 16-0.

Then, we continue with another guest, this time Will Leitch, formerly of
Deadspin, and currently of New York magazine. Will shares his time to talk about the Arizona Cardinals, the certainty (though Will only feels safe calling it a possibility) that the Cardinals are making the playoffs, and how weird it is to see them succeed.

From there, we've got an actual mailbag, with actual questions from actual listeners.

I really REALLY appreciate those of you who took the time to call in and ask questions, and I hope more of you do the same between now and the next podcast (304- 933- 4488).
Anything that's on your mind.

to all 7 of you, thanks for listening. We'd like to start a new feature on the
podcast where we take calls from you, the listener and loyal blog reader, and
answer them in the
podcast.

If you've got such a question (or a comment, or a rant, or anything else),
the number to call and leave your voicemail for myself or Danks would be 304-933-4488.
An easy way to remember that would be Terrell Davis, Brett Favre, Jim McMahon,
Tony Dorsett, John Riggins, Marvin Harrison.

But really, that's not all that easy a mnemonic, and I can't think of a
single reason to memorize that number anyway. But it's there if you want it.

a week away, we're once again back in the podcast saddle. And to make up for the
week off, this one's extra long, and for the second podcast in a row, we have a
special guest. Mr. Drew Magary of Kissing
Suzy Kolber and author of the hilarious and sneakily brilliant Men

But first, Danks and I kick around the possibility of Detroit or Cincinnati
going 0-16, and then play a little game called "Throw Dirt On 'Em," in
which we go through the borderline teams in the NFL and decide whose playoff
hopes can officially be buried, and who's still alive.

Then I talk to Drew about a number of topics, including Girls Gone Wild
Magazine, his current omnipresence in the blogosphere, some topics from around
the NFL, and the three people in the NFL he'd like to punch in the face.

And to make up for the week off, this one's extra long, and for the second podcast in a row, we have a special guest. Mr. Drew Magary of Kissing Suzy Kolber and author of the hilarious and sneakily brilliant Men With Balls (get used to that link). But first, Danks and I kick around the possibility of Detroit or Cincinnati going 0-16, and then play a little game called &quot;Throw Dirt On 'Em,&quot; in which we go through the borderline teams in the NFL and decide whose playoff hopes can officially be buried, and who's still alive. Then I talk to Drew about a number of topics, including Girls Gone Wild Magazine, his current omnipresence in the blogosphere, some topics from around the NFL, and the three people in the NFL he'd like to punch in the face. five podcasts in to the history of On The Corner, and I'm pleased to report that
they're absolutely not getting any better. I think it'll be more downloadable
this time, though. Please let me know.

For the first time in the history of the podcast, though, have a special
guest on this week. Cox, the Dallas Cowboys aficionado from Armchair
Linebacker joins us to talk about the many many things happening with the
Cowboys organization. We also take a look at Derek Anderson, whether or not the
Browns might be able to repeat last week's performance, and a couple of other
middling teams who might have some things going for him.

Danks and I also call the Ravens/Dolphins and Texans/Lions games, against the
spread. That might be worth listening to, on the extremely slim chance that both
of us going 2-0 ATS last week wasn't a complete fluke.

is our fourth podcast, and to celebrate, we have absolutely nothing special.

The first subject of discussion is Eddie Hochuli, and what the future might
hold for him. We also guess at what the personal lives of other league officials
might be like. From there, we turn to Marvin Harrison and the
trouble/inconvenience he could be facing, and then there's a great deal of
discussion about the trouble I'm having accepting the Chicago Bears as a
legitimate team.

Also this week, Danks and I will pick a couple of games against the spread,
in a competition that we'll be having that'll last all year long. I am fairly
certain, though, that after one week, we'll be tied.

actually made it three weeks into this podcasting business without anyone
quitting or getting fired. And to celebrate, guess what? This third podcast?
Absolutely free. No charge, for you, the loyal customer. What can I say, I'm a
giver.

This week, Danks and I talk about the firing in St. Louis and Oakland, and
where both teams can go from here. We talk about Terrell Owens, his relationship
with Tony Romo, and the (un)likelihood that it all ends tragically. We talk
about the Bengals, scraping the bottom of the barrel for running backs, the
Steelers, keeping Ben Roethlisberger upright, and then, for almost no reason at
all, we just name some rookie running backs.
