Link building is often referred to as off page search engine optimisation and it is the life blood of your website. It is what gets you indexed, what ranks you in the search engines, helps you climb the rankings and then what keeps you there.

Obviously you need content so that the search engines know what your site is about. This is the on page search engine optimisation. BUT once the on page is done it is time for the off page and you should consider it to be just as important.

The real secret to effective link building is to be slow and steady and natural looking. At the end of the day of course you want your website to rank well and of course you want as many visitors as possible, but you also want to keep your site in the rankings and not get labelled as spammy.

Now I want to tell you about a special kind of link building program called Linkvana. Basically you write short posts or articles relating to your site with one way anchor rich links in them. These posts and articles get posted to pr2 to pr5 blogs across a wide range of class c ip addresses.

New Virus Amongst Us

Further to my spam post a few days ago I thought this was relevant.

I received a message, from someone that I subscribe to, about a new virus so I checked it for myself and thought you’d like to see the results.

This is the message I got …

“HUGE VIRUS COMING! PLEASE READ & FORWARD!”

Hi All,

I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus!

I checked Snopes, and it is for real. Get this E-mail message sent around to all your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days.

Do not open any message with an attachment entitled ‘POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK,’ regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which ‘burns’ the whole hard disc C drive of your computer.

This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address on his/her contact list. That is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it!

If you receive a mail called’ POSTCARD,’ even if it is sent to you by a friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst virus announced by CNN.

It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

a squidoo lens related to it offering virus software via clickbank, which is an affiliate program for those new to internet marketing. (This was my favourite because it shows the initiative of an affiliate marketer cashing in on something that they know people will search for after getting an e-mail. Think outside the box guys.)

IMPORTANT NOTE

Some versions of this hoax claim the information was “verified” on Snopes.com. This is NOT true. What has been verified on Snopes.com is a different e-card virus threat with a similar name.

DO beware of phony “Hallmark” (or other) e-card notices — they may carry a real virus.

You can read the whole story on snopes.com, but the gist of it is that … Although the Postcard virus is real, it isn’t a “BIG VIRUS COMING” (it’s already been around in multiple forms for a long time now), it will not “burn the whole hard disc” of your computer, CNN didn’t classify it as the “worst virus” ever, and it doesn’t arrive in messages bearing a subject line of ‘Invitation.’

So there you have it, like with my previous post, the spammers/virs senders/hackers/phishers are getting cleverer, we just need to think before opening an e-mail or clicking a link that we are not sure came from where it says it comes from.

The Evolution Of Spam

SPAM is an e-mail received that you have not asked for, as in you have not signed up to someone’s list and asked for information from them.

I get quite a lot of spam as I’m sure everyone with their own website does, but the evolution of this spam is very worrying. Just before christmas there was an influx of facebook spam, which I am sure led to mane people’s accounts being hacked.

The spammers are getting more sophisticated and are now sending html messages and not plain text messages. This means that they can show you any url they like while hiding the real url.

I use microsoft outlook for my e-mails and if I hove over any link it shows me the real link, so I can always check if I am unsure. Today though I got a spam e-mail that shocked me. It was from my domain to my normal e-mail at that domain explaining that there had been an upgrade and I had to click the link to confirm the changes. I have posted the content at the bottom of this post with a few details blanked out for security, but I wanted you to see how believable it was. I checked the url straight away and it was a fake one, but others may not check, so I wanted to make you all aware.

The best advise I can give you to avoid this new evolution of spam is that if you are unsure about a link in an e-mail DO NOT click it.

Here is the e-mail I got, remember that the url shown has been changed to protect my security, but that also it was not the real url …

Pick one of those products you have been collecting, read it or watch it and put it to action. Keep a diary of what you do for a month. Then look back at what you did and what you have achieved. I bet it’ll be more than you did last month

My gosh, nearly 7 months since my last post. The time has flown by. I have been building sites like a mad lady and increasing my adsense and affiliate sales, which has been great.

I’ve done a lot of testing and tweaking to find what works and what doesn’t, so get ready for 2010 when I am going to share it all with you.

I promise, as my new year’s resolution, to write once a week to this site so that there is always something new for you to read and learn from.

Is It Possible To Learn And Benefit From Time Management Skills

I am probably one of the worst time keepers in the world, although I know there are worse (in fact my husband has two friends who should get medals for the lateness).

I am hardly ever late as I hate it when other people are, but I very often mis-manage my time. I have clients that I look after, as well as people I coach and my own sites, so time management is a very important factor of my business. I also have three boys under 5, two dogs and a husband, which you can imagine keeps me busy, so time managemenst skills are also required in my home life.

I decided to take action and find some time management techniques to improve my skills. So I went online, of course, and took a few days browsing Amazon and the like for something on learning time management skills and techniques, but there just didn’t seem to be anything that suited my needs.

The I got an e-mail from Mr Robert Plank (he has a lot of wordpress products, so I always read his e-mails). He was offering a time management course and as he himself is an internet marketer I knew that his course was exactly what I had been looking for. You can take a look at his course here.

Since buying this course and learning how to effectively manage my time I have been a lot more productive. I can do more in less time and can also motivate my outsourcers better.

Downloads Downloading But Not Saving

I hate wasting time and today I spent three hours looking for an answer as to why all of a sudden, just from last night, downloads seemed to be downloading, but they were not saved to the location I specified. They weren’t saving in any location. This was in both Firefox and IE.

I can tell you after the first 10 Google searches and having read through about 100 pages that were not really relevant, I was REAL mad. I did however, finally, find a page that sorted the problem … http://support.mozilla.com/ca/kb/Unable+To+Download+Or+Save+Files, specifically this part … http://support.mozilla.com/ca/kb/Unable+To+Download+Or+Save+Files#Disable_virus_scanning_in_Firefox_preferences

It solved the problem in Firefox, but not in IE.

I am using AVG and had not had any problems up until last night. I don’t know if it is due to AVG or something else.

I decided to provide the fix for everyone here as it is a pain to find the right information or even something that is relevant to now. I spent a half hour looking for a file that is not included anymore in Firefox 3.0.

Anyway, I now have to scan all my files by hand before I extract or install them, but at least they are downloading.

The Biggest Niche Marketing Secret Revealed

The biggest secret, or key, to successful niche marketing are the keywords you choose.

You want to have keywords that people are searching for, but you also want to have the money keywords.

Now, I always do my keyword research using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Why? Because I want to rank well in Google as they index and rank sites faster than the other search engines, so I want to know what people are searching for on Google.

I always look at the exact match count and the global average search volume and whether there are adwords adverts. I download the csv files for the keywords and the related keywords, mesh them together and sort by highest search volume to lowest search volume. I do some initial searches on Google for the keyword with and without brackets and I look at the site wide links the competition have.

I then get content targeting the 10 keywords I feel are the best buying keywords. This is something you learn how to spot over time, but basically anything with a brand name or a model name in it is a buying keyword and any keywords that include the words; review, coupon, buy, get and how, to are also good buying keywords.

The thing to remember is that the number of searches is not the be all and end all. You are 100 times better off going for 10 searches a month for ‘nikon qs452 camera special offer’ (I made this model number up as an example) rather than 5000 searches a month for ‘nikon camera’ .

Later, when I get some statistics, from my tracking program, about what keywords people are actually using and what keywords are converting, I can then add more keywords into my list if I need to.

I noticed yesterday while doing some research that Google has added some more free tools like their adwords keyword tool. Search for anything on Google and when the search results come up you will now see a Show options clickable link on the left hand side of the screen on the same light blue line as the number of results.

There are quite a few goodies here, like showing the destination url for the adwords sites and the timeline for the keyword, but my favourite is the wonder wheel. It basically shows you exactly what Google think are the most relevant keywords to your main keyword. This is very good for filling out your site later on down the road. It is called Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI).

Niche marketing has made me enough so far to replace the monthly income of a well paid job. If you’ve read my other posts you will see that I do most things using automated software as it saves me lots of time, BUT when it comes to the keywords I use for my websites I prefer to spend an hour or two doing it by hand. I get better results that way.

There are lots of tools out there, and some of them will give you really large lists of keywords, but until you have mastered it by hand I would not recommend you spend any money on it.

Have a play around with what Google have on offer for free. You’ll really find it beneficial as it will change the way you look at keywords for your future research

The Free Blog Software VS Paid Blog Software Debate

First off the bat I want to explain that I only use wordpress. I use it on all my sites even if they are not blog sites. In fact I just set up a finance comapny website for my brother in the UK and used wordpress as a CMS (content management solution) and he was astounded with the result. Due to the built in features like permalinks and and the rss feed, not even going into the sheer number of themes and plugins there are, that you can now add with a few clicks of the few mouse, it is without a doubt, hands down, the best there is. PLUS it is free and there are loads of forums dedicated to it where you can get help and support.

For the beginners (newbies) to website design, building a website, trying to make money online, the five minute install explained on the main wordpress website, http://www.wordpress.org, really does work. You can search youtube nowadays for anything and almost all reputable hosting providers offer free video tutorials on how to do things. You can also install wordpress through fantastico, if your hosting proivder offer cpanel.

The only problem with the above methods are that for each install you need to go through and delete the first post, the blogroll links and set all your settings to how you like them. Then you have to add all your plugins and themes.

I personally have two ways of installing wordpress so that all my themes, plugins and settings are ready from the off, one free and one paid, hence the debate

The FREE Way

I have a test site with a blank version of wordpress installed. It has all the plugins I want installed and a range of themes that I use often. It also has all of the settings set just how I like them, including the permalink.

When I want to set up a new site I zip up all the files via the file manager in cpanel and download them.I download the wp-config.php separately and change the details to that of the new domain. I then backup the mysql database to my desktop via php myadmin and do a find and replace with the details of the new domain.

I have done this many times and it takes about 45 minutes as I then have to check it is all working.

The PAID Way

About a year ago I found out about an online piece of ’software’, if you can call it that, that installs wordpress in a few clicks with the settings, plugins and themes set just right. On top of that, which is already fantastic, it can bookmark your posts automatically across a range of social bookmarking sites AND ACCOUNTS. It can also add keyword targeted content, to be dripped over time, in just a few more clicks. You can then submit your site to the main rss directories with another few clicks. AND this all happens from one main control panel. You can even access your wordpress admin through it. There are a few more fab features which you can read about on the sales page …

As a current member I know that a new version of Firepow is going to be released in the next few weeks. Andrew (the owner) has also told us that the price is going up, which is why I wanted to give you the chance to get in before it does.

There are two levels of membership … Basic Level, which is not basic by any stretch f the imagination as you get everything, and Premium Level, which has everything the same as the basic level, but you have the added option to you add blog posts with links back to other blogs using Firepow, owned by other people. Andrew has also added a lot of his own sites to ensure that every topic is covered. As the blog owner you can also deny articles, if you want to ensure that they are 100% on topic (I don’t as this is great for ensuring your site is using latent semantic indexing, which basically means you cover exercise if you have a weight loss site).

There is also of course a support forum and I have never had to wait more than 24 hrs (a little longer over the weekend) for an answer from the actual staff.

I think that any time saver like this is worth the money. I have a few people that work for me in India and the Phillipenes, so I can get them to set up 10 sites in less than an hour (the same time it would take to manually put up one site) and the cost to me is less than $5. I can then spend that time doing other more productive things.

Do You Need A Search Engine Ranking Boost?

My how the time passed quickly, it’s been about a fortnight since I got home and posted and since then not a thing. I have been promoting a CPA offer and was so surprised by my results that I got carried away into another one Anyway, that is a story for another day.

I use a lot of tools that save me time. I love them all, but I have two favourites. One I will be discussing in the next few days, it is wordpress related, but the other one has just opened up some more spots, so I thought I’d better let you know now.

So, Brute Force SEO, by Peter Drew, is a nift piece of work. It creates accounts for you across 5 sites. It automatically posts content to those sites, using your keywords and money site of course, links them together and then submits the urls to the social bookmarking sites as well as the rss submission sites. You can do all of these things or just one. You can also submit your articles to the article directories.

ALL from just ONE easy to use interface.

Peter’s new twitter software is included and to be honest I wasn’t sure about this to start with, but 500 friends in 24 hrs with a brand new account proved me wrong.

You also get a social site account creator that is separate and can create accounts for you in about 40 (I have not counted) social sites including video sites, article sites and rss submission sites.

Full manuals are given along with access to a fabulous forum, where people are more than happy to share their tips and help you out.

I signed up on launch for this back in October 2008. That was version 1. something. We are now on version 3. something as Peter is dedicated to keeping this software up to date.

The number of backlinks that are created to and linkjuice passed on to your money site is unbelieveable considering you just sit drinking tea or whatever entering captchas.
