Agreement signed in Doha during the recent visit of Google Cloud’s CEO

Region-wide deal creates a centralised application programming interface (API) gateway, allowing Ooredoo Operating Companies to easily integrate digital partner services with their internal systems, for the benefit of customers

Ooredoo Group today announced it has signed an agreement with Google Cloud to leverage Apigee’s centralised API gateway. This deal is the latest in a series of partnerships between Ooredoo and major global technology players, aimed at future-proofing its business by evolving its core operations to smart telco, upgrading its customer experiences across both business-to-consumer and business-to-business sectors.

The Google Cloud Apigee platform will enable operating companies in all Ooredoo markets to easily integrate digital partners and global applications, with its internal systems through a set of APIs, thus offering a streamlined service to customers. Business customers will benefit from accessing the API gateway capabilities for their own operations.

Present at the signing of the agreement were Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ooredoo, and Thomas Kurian, Chief Executive Officer, Google Cloud. Also present were Deputy Group CEO and CEO of Ooredoo Qatar Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulla Al Thani and Group Regional CEO Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Neama.

Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo said: “This strategic partnership between Ooredoo and Google Cloud will propel us on our journey to deliver transformational digital experiences for our customers, in an environment of accelerating change. Ooredoo is committed to upgrading our customers’ world, through the strong and sustainable development of our operations, and leveraging Google Cloud’s state-of-the-art Apigee platform will be a critical success factor in the achievement of this end goal.”

Thomas Kurian, Chief Executive Officer of Google Cloud, said: “We are pleased to support Ooredoo, one of the world’s leading telecommunications providers, in delivering innovative products to its customers. With Apigee, Ooredoo Group can build applications with great flexibility, and analyze traffic to drive better performance, gain actionable insights, and generate new revenue streams. Google Cloud continues to collaborate closely with Ooredoo in its digital transformation journey.”

Ooredoo Qatar has already deployed the hybrid API gateway from Apigee, which was completed in record time due to excellent cross-party collaboration with Google Cloud. The solution combines on-premise systems with Google Cloud for better latency and data protection, and has significantly upgraded the digital journeys provided by Ooredoo Qatar to its customers.

Ooredoo Qatar

Ooredoo Qatar saw good growth during the period. Reported revenue was up 6% year-on-year to QAR 5.7 billion (9M 2021: QAR 5.4 billion), driven by growth in post-paid services, sales of Ooredoo tv, Ooredoo financial and B2B services. EBITDA reached QAR 2.8 billion (9M 2021: QAR 2.9 billion), with EBITDA margin at 50%. Service revenue was up by 6% year-on-year, while the mobile customer base grew by 2%. Of note, interest in FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 had a marked impact on sales of the Ooredoo ONE home service, with the customer base growing 18% year-on-year. Total customer number reached 3.2 million.

The company continued to diversify its B2B services portfolio during the period, launching the Microsoft Intune solution for business customers and supporting Microsoft’s Qatar data centre regional launch. In addition, the company launched new packages for enterprise vehicle tracking and a range of special short-term cyber-security packages to help businesses protect themselves against DDoS attacks and web-related attacks during FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. In addition, Ooredoo Qatar launched Apple Pay on Ooredoo App, extending the range of financial services. More than 50% of customers used the Ooredoo App as their main channel for transactions during the period.

Ooredoo Oman

Ooredoo Oman reported revenues of QAR 1.9 billion, up 8%, primarily driven by higher wholesale revenue and device sales. EBITDA for the period increased 9% to QAR 983 million, supported by a healthy EBITDA margin of 53%.

Ooredoo Oman remains dedicated to providing innovative products to its customers and in testament to its contributions, the company won the award for Technology Solutions in the Telecommunications Sector at the Middle East Technology Excellence Awards 2022.

Ooredoo Kuwait

Kuwait’s economy continued to improve primarily driven by the lifting of all COVID-19 restrictions as well as the stability in oil prices. Ooredoo Kuwait reported a 12% increase in revenue to QAR 2.1 billion and an increase in EBITDA of 13%, supported by a stable EBITDA margin of 30%.

In line with Ooredoo’s strategy to provide uninterrupted digital solutions to its customers, Ooredoo Kuwait launched its new FIBER+ (FTTR) solution and rolled out 42 new sites during the quarter to provide greenfield coverage in residential areas, which led to an improved user experience for B2B and VIP customers.

Asiacell – Iraq

Asiacell reported revenue of QAR 2.7 billion, a decrease of 2%, due to the ongoing intense competition in Iraq.

Asiacell’s EBITDA dropped by 7% due to lower revenue and higher energy costs.

Q3 2022 has been the strongest quarter of the year in terms of Revenue and EBITDA.

During the quarter, Asiacell launched its new E-Shop “Asiamall”, as well as its “YallaShoot” campaign, to enhance customer satisfaction.

The Company’s customer base stands at 17.1 million, an increase of 13%.

North Africa

Ooredoo Algeria

Ooredoo Algeria reported revenue of QAR 1.7 billion during the period and EBITDA increased by 3% to QAR 625 million. In local currency terms revenue and EBITDA increased by 4% and 10%, respectively.

The Company remains focused on efficiency and cost optimisation which supported its healthy EBITDA margin of 38%.

Ooredoo Algeria’s customer base increased by 2% to 13.0 million.

Ooredoo Tunisia

Ooredoo Tunisia reported revenue of QAR 1.1 billion, a decrease of 8% for the period. In local currency terms revenue increased 2%, despite a decline in the Tunisian economy and currency depreciation of 10%.

The Company reported an EBITDA of QAR 497 million for the period.

Ooredoo Tunisia’s customer number increased to 7.2 million at the end of September, with the Company maintaining its leadership in the mobile market.

Asia

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison

The merger between Indosat Ooredoo and 3 Indonesia closed on January 4, resulting in the formation of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) – now considered a joint venture, as opposed to a subsidiary. With this, Ooredoo Group only recognizes 33% of IOH’s profits as a contribution towards the Group’s net income, and no longer consolidates the Company’s revenue or EBITDA contribution.

IOH reports their Q3 results on 28 October 2022.

Ooredoo Myanmar

Despite the ongoing shutdown of internet services in parts of Sagaing region and the tax increase on data services Ooredoo Myanmar reported flat revenues of QAR 798 million and a 30% increase in EBITDA due to strict cost control. In local currency terms revenue was up by 19%.

In September, Ooredoo Group announced the sale of its telecom business in Myanmar to Nine Communications Pte. Ltd at an enterprise value of USD 576 million and total equity consideration of USD 162 million. This transaction is an important milestone in line with the Group’s strategic decisions to focus on markets where Ooredoo is leading. The sale is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals in Myanmar.

Ooredoo’s Q3 2022 financial statements will be available on its website, accessible at: http://www.ooredoo.com.

Ooredoo Q.P.S.C. has announced the amendment of its Q3 20200 Financial Results’ conference call to be held on 31 October 2022 14:00, instead of the previously announced Date of 1st November 2022. Pre-registration is required at this link: http://ore.do/ir-call.

Ooredoo is connecting Tunisia to Marseille via a new subsea cable, which will support the diversification of Tunisia’s international connectivity offering through a system wholly owned and operated by Ooredoo Tunisia

Leveraging the high-speed, 15,000-km PEACE subsea cable system provides high-capacity, low-latency data connectivity for Tunisia’s market, in response to fast-growing demand

During the ‘Capacity Europe’ event in London on 19 October 2022, Ooredoo Tunisia officially signed an agreement with global telecommunications service provider PCCW Global, to deploy a new network solution, leveraging the PEACE subsea cable system connecting Tunisia with Marseille, thus opening a new gateway to Europe.

Through the investment in the PEACE Subsea Cable System, which is set to be operational in early 2024, Ooredoo will improve the diversity and choice within its international infrastructure, while making a new entry point to Tunisia available to global carriers and enterprises to meet their connectivity requirements in Tunisia and beyond.

This comes as part of Ooredoo’s strategy to find, establish and develop partnerships that enable the company to leverage technology and innovation to upgrade its customers’ world of opportunities.

The agreement – which gives Ooredoo total ownership of the latest global platform within Tunisia – promises to offer customers significantly enhanced data speed and quality at a vastly reduced cost, when connecting with Marseille.

Present at the signing were Mansoor Rashid Al-Khater, Chief Executive Officer, Ooredoo Tunisia; Marc Halbfinger, Chief Executive Officer PCCW Global and Najib Khan, Group Chief Business Services Officer, Ooredoo Group.

Mansoor Rashid Al-Khater, Chief Executive Officer, Ooredoo Tunisia, says: “There is an ever-growing demand for increased network capacity and speed among our customers and we are delighted to be in a unique position to upgrade their experience through this deal with PCCW Global. The PEACE Subsea Cable represents an exciting development in the global telecommunications industry, and Ooredoo is confident that this investment will help us in our mission to upgrade our customers’ world.”

Marc Halbfinger, Chief Executive Officer, PCCW Global, said: “The collaboration with Ooredoo Tunisia is an important step in connecting growing traffic requirements in this important market to Europe through the PEACE Cable system. We look forward to a long term and fruitful relationship, and to a successful roll-out of the project while leveraging Ooredoo’s long-standing expertise and vast network.”

Najib Khan, Group Chief Business Services Officer, Ooredoo Group, added: “This landmark deal aligns perfectly with the Ooredoo Group strategy of securing international capacity diversity, proactively responding to fast-growing data traffic demands and reducing costs for all stakeholders. We are confident of successfully delivering on these goals through our alliance with PCCW Global.”

This agreement is the latest in a series of partnerships between Ooredoo and major technology players, aimed at creating superior customer experiences and evolving today’s core to smart telco.

9 October 2022

Doha, Qatar

Ooredoo, the official Middle East and Africa Telecommunications Operator of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, signed a partnership with NR Sports to announce footballing superstar Neymar Jr. as the company’s new face for promoting the amazing potential of 5G.

Known for his love of technology and gaming, Neymar Jr. will help build awareness of 5G’s phenomenal capability to upgrade people’s worlds in every way. He will work with the telecommunications leader and pioneer of commercial 5G to promote the benefits of the fifth-generation technology and of Ooredoo’s superfast networks to customers across its global footprint.

Neymar Jr. is widely considered to be one of the most talented footballers of the current generation. He has twice been named South American Footballer of The Year. His transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 helped his team win the Ligue 1 four times and the French Cup three times.

The partnership with Neymar Jr. is perfectly timed with the Group’s new brand promise to ‘Upgrade Your World’. Ooredoo Group’s new tagline stems from its ambition to enable human progress, reflecting the company’s commitment to keep improving and never standing still.

Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo, Ooredoo Group’s Managing Director and CEO said: “We are super excited to partner with sporting legend Neymar Jr. who is among the most admired and charismatic sports personalities on the planet. As someone who is constantly reinventing himself, dynamic, confident, and committed to excellence, he fittingly embodies our brand promise to keep upgrading the world of our customers.”

For his part, Neymar Jr. said: “Everyone knows how much I like technology, games, as well as being connected to my friends and family. I tested Ooredoo’s 5G and it’s really super because of the low latency that is fundamental for those who play online. More than that, being the face of such an innovative company in such an important time in my career, makes me even happier”.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulla Al-Thani, Deputy Group CEO and CEO of Ooredoo Qatar said: “We believe sport unites and has a positive influence on our communities, helping to share important messages of collaboration, inclusion and resilience. Neymar Jr. is an inspiration to millions around the world, which makes him an ideal face for Ooredoo. We are very excited to be working together.”
