Three Dudes Stole Booze From A BevMo And Then Led Police On A Multi-Freeway Chase http://www.theopendaily.com/local-blogs/three-dudes-stole-booze-from-a-bevmo-and-then-led-police-on-a-multi-freeway-chase http://www.theopendaily.com/local-blogs/three-dudes-stole-booze-from-a-bevmo-and-then-led-police-on-a-multi-freeway-chase#comments Mon, 12 Jun 2017 19:34:19 +0000 http://www.theopendaily.com/?p=158321

bevmo.jpg The entrance to the BevMo in question. (Screenshot via Google Maps)

At around midnight on Monday morning (or late on Sunday night, as some would see it), three men broke the front window of a Culver City BevMo to steal booze, and then led authorities on a high-speed pursuit across three freeways.

Culver City Police Sergeant Brandon VanScoy told LAist that Culver City officers first responded to a burglary alarm at the Sepulveda BevMo location at approximately 12:30 a.m., and upon arrival immediately saw that the store’s window had been smashed. They then witnessed a vehicle fleeing the location at a high speed, “almost striking an officer.” One of the officers fired his weapon at that point, but no one was hurt. The vehicle in question was “a van of some sort,” according to Sergeant VanScoy.

The three suspects and their van then led authorities on a partially high-speed (varying between 50 and 100 miles per hour) pursuit that included sections of the 90, 405 and 10 freeways, according to City News Service. The pursuit ended near the intersection of 10th Street and Jefferson Boulevard, where one subject was immediately taken into custody while the other two fled on foot, according to Culver City Police. City News Service reports that the other two suspects were eventually apprehended after one was found hiding on a roof by an LAPD helicopter and the other was found hiding behind the getaway van. All three were arrested on suspicion of burglary. The pursuit “only lasted around 15 to 20 minutes in total,” according to VanScoy.

City News Service is reporting that all the stolen liquor was recovered, however the Culver City Police Department was unable to verify that information.

Dario, the “BevMologist” who answered the phone at the Culver City BevMo in question, told LAist that the store would not be commenting on the incident. However, according to Dario, the Culver City BevMo is open for business today.

Gwyneth Paltrow, the veritable queen of contemporary leisure-as-luxury lifestyle most recently exemplified by Amanda Chantal Bacon’s Moon Juice empire, is hosting an “In Goop Health” summit today in Culver City. She announced the summit back in April and the $500-$1500 tickets immediately started selling out. Despite recently appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live to admit she doesn’t know much about what the brand is teaching, the health summit is proceeding as planned.

The day-long symposium includes panels on how to find the best crystal for your emotional experience, the best floral salve for “whatever is ailing you,” talks from Goop’s favorite experts, and appearances from GP herself. The day has food from Erin McKenna’s Bakery and sweetgreen, branded experiences via Bumble, and Instagram-friendly walls of plants. The main panels, according to an Instagram post from one of the attendees, include the “Gut Check,” “The Tools,” “The Mother Load” (a panel exploring the “mother wound” and how to re-parent ourselves), and “The Three-Way” (a panel discussing “orgasm equality and moving past sexual shame”). The whole day culminates with a celebrity-studded panel anchored by Gwyneth and featuring Cameron Diaz, Miranda Kerr, Tory Burch, and Nicole Richie, where the five women will discuss “managing all those balls.” Balls, of course, referencing the elements of our lives we must “keep in the air,” according to the labeling of the Goop “Balls In The Air” supplement protocol.

The speakers include Dr. Habib Seghadi, a favorite of Goop’s. Dr. Seghadi is an expert on turning emotional experiences into metaphors around septic systems and buying a new car. He spoke to the group of attendees about “cosmic flow,” reminding everyone that if you’re “actually here, your life will change dramatically.” “Here,” being, of course, the present moment, because if not, he’s suggesting your life will only change dramatically if you spend $1500 attending a Goop-approved conference.

LA’s Next Prime Rooftop Restaurant Comes to Culver City’s Platform http://www.theopendaily.com/local-blogs/las-next-prime-rooftop-restaurant-comes-to-culver-citys-platform http://www.theopendaily.com/local-blogs/las-next-prime-rooftop-restaurant-comes-to-culver-citys-platform#comments Wed, 12 Apr 2017 20:29:25 +0000 http://www.theopendaily.com/?p=156818

The team behind Norah is getting in on the action

Guests will soon be able to enjoy sky-high views and some fantastic cooking from the rooftop of Culver City’s Platform project soon. The team behind West Hollywood hit restaurant Norah is expanding into some prime skyline real estate there, dropping a new Mediterranean restaurant towards the end of 2017.

The unnamed project will feature a number of familiar faces, including of course restaurateur Rohan Talwar and chef Mike Williams. It’ll be Williams leading the charge on the new menu, which plays to coastal Spain and central Italy. In fact, Talwar says the place will probably focus more on Spanish cuisine than noodles and pizza (given their heavy proliferation around town already), but the details and finer points are still being worked out.

Platform

The rooftop atrium at Platform

So too is the space at Platform. The upstairs area has been in use as an event venue for a while now, but with that all winding down construction is set to start next month. That puts the project on pace for an opening at the end of the year ideally, with more news on the restaurant and its menu as it comes.

There’s some rather excellent food being served in Culver City these days. The city’s last culinary heyday was circa 2008, when a number of upscale restaurants popped up around the Culver Hotel and in Helms Bakery. It kind of petered out … but the restaurant scene is back, baby! Just slightly more relaxed this time around. Except for Destroyer and n/naka, which can’t just be classified as upscale, as they’re singular creatures. (And n/naka is technically in Palms.) Have run rediscovering Culver City’s great food!

BäcoShop
BäcoShop, a counter-service restaurant, brings Josef Centeno’s half-pita, half-burrito creations to an area that could really use a high-quality lunch option. (It’s open for dinner, too.) “Bäco” really refers to the vessel; it can be wrapped around any kind of filling. These have shown up before at Bäco Mercat, though the options at BäcoShop are perhaps a little more accessible. They’re all — shrimp, steak, eggplant, etc. — saucy and soulful. My current favorite is the “green herb chicken” with thyme, spiced yogurt, green cabbage, parsley and a Meyer lemon vinaigrette. The menu is rounded out with a number of salads and vegetable dishes, dips served with crackers, a daily soft-serve ice cream option, bottle of Bäco Pop and tubs of Centeno’s famous rice pudding.

Destroyer
Jordan Kahn’s Destroyer follows a new set of rules that seem contradictory to the idea of success and longevity but might just be the future of restaurants: Pick an odd, out-of-the-way location with no parking; pare down your build-out to absolute basics; open on the days and at the times that suit you — ignore dinner and weekends altogether if you like. Cook whatever the hell you want. Kahn has always been known for his visually stunning food. That hasn’t changed here, despite the fact that Destroyer is basically a futuristic cafe where office workers come to get coffee and oatmeal. But the coffee is from San Francisco’s Coffee Manufactory, and the oatmeal comes raw and crunchy in a beautiful, white bowl with drifts of red currant, perfect for Instagram, as is just about everything here. In fact, Destroyer’s stark background, heavy, earthy ceramics and meticulously artful platings might make it the most Instagrammable restaurant in the known universe. —Besha Rodell

The Wallace
The small-plates menu at The Wallace in Culver City isn’t revolutionary, but it is interesting, with a vaguely Mediterranean vibe and fresh California ingredients. Start with something from the Jarred section — maybe a caponata with ricotta and sea salt, duck rillettes, or the grilled flatbread served with mini jars of bacon marmalade, romesco and wilted greens. The cheese and cured selections include, well, cheese, but also popovers, salt cod fritters and a cured salmon belly served with an artistic smattering of cucumber, beets and horseradish. There are enough vegetable options to fill up even non-vegetarians (amazing grilled cauliflower with almond breadcrumbs, sprouting broccoli with tahini and feta, market greens with pumpkin and pomegranate seeds) and the final sea and land sections have well-executed standards (grilled Greek octopus, tuna tartare) but also lemonfish crudo, charred lamb leg with farro risotto and an impossibly light short-rib ravioli dish. You’ll need a couple of dishes per person to fill up, but everything is affordable — and dishes are far prettier than their price tags suggest. —L.A. Weekly

Maple Block Meat Co.
Barbecue is, above all else, regional. Part of the pleasure of visiting barbecue restaurants in the South is the ability to take a deep dive into that region’s foodways, to understand that what’s on your plate could only be had in that state, that county, that town. Maple Block Meat Co., which opened in August 2015 in Culver City, pays homage to all kinds of traditions, including the more modern L.A. tradition of making your barbecue restaurant very pretty in a wood-lined, rustic kind of way. The chef, Adam Cole, moved around the South as a kid, living in Texas, Georgia and North Carolina, and he got a taste for quite a few different barbecue styles. At Maple Block, he’s not adhering to any particular style or region; you can get brisket or chopped pork or smoked turkey or smoked chicken or pork ribs or prime rib or Scottish trout. It’s hard enough to do one kind of barbecue well; it’s almost impossible to do three or four kinds. What Cole does do very well is smoke meat, and, in particular, brisket. The tender slices of beef are intensely smoky, the ratio of fat to lean meat is just right, and the peppery crust on the outside gives just enough prickly flavor. This brisket is as good as any I’ve had outside of Texas and far better than 90 percent of what the other 49 states have to offer. —Besha Rodell

Copenhagen Pastry
This little shop prides itself on its “authentic Danish pastries,” which doesn’t really mean, you know, danishes. It means a ton of butter making everything flaky, from the “Copenhagen Line,” a stick-like pastry filled with yellow custard, to the signature kringles, full of almond paste (actually, most items here contain almond paste, which is one of the world’s best dessert ingredients). There are also breakfast pastries and cakes, and rye bread made in the super-dense Nordic manner.

Four-story mixed use project planned for Culver City http://www.theopendaily.com/local-blogs/four-story-mixed-use-project-planned-for-culver-city http://www.theopendaily.com/local-blogs/four-story-mixed-use-project-planned-for-culver-city#comments Mon, 27 Mar 2017 08:10:25 +0000 http://www.theopendaily.com/?p=156175

A mix of two and three-bedroom apartments

A long-vacant lot at the intersection of Washington Place and Sawtelle Boulevard could soon be the site of a four-story mixed use project with 14 large apartments and 4,900 square feet of street-level retail.

The project is designed by architect Farzin Maly and was approved last week by the Culver City Planning Commission. Located within a block of an on-ramp for the 405 Freeway, the site was most recently occupied by a gas station—as Urbanize LA reports.

Documents presented to the commission show that the development would include a mix of two and three-bedroom apartments ranging between 932 and 2,456 square feet in area. The structure will sit atop a subterranean garage with parking for tenants and guests. A separate parking area on the first level will be available for customers of the retail establishments.

Initially planned to rise five-stories, the project was scaled back in response to community input. Neighbors of the project at the commission hearing voiced concerns that it would swallow up available parking in the area, though the commission ultimately approved the project without imposing further parking conditions on the developer.

In addition to the 31 spaces in the below-ground parking garage, the project will also include 16 bicycle parking spots (which should come in handy if the city’s proposed bike share system gets off the ground).
