Save files online with Open IT Online 2.5

With Open IT Online 2.5, Firefox users have now the possibility to save online many types of files: this is thanks to the inclusion of the well known Box.net service. To save a file in Box.net you need a free Box.net account. Here is how the 'Open With' dialog looks like:

Please note that you can disable the option "Save IT Online" in the Open IT Online option dialog.

In Open IT Online 2.5 we also had to remove ThinkFree Viewer service, due to the fact that ThinkFree discontinued their java applet document viewer.

At the same time, we have added a brand new service called View Docs Online that allows to view all the documents supported by Open IT Online in a quick way. We suggest you give it a try!

We also added the possibility to remove the Open IT Online icon from the status bar.

Open local documents online with Open IT Online 2.0

With Open IT Online 2.0 it is possible to view and edit online even the documents that are stored on your computer! You will not be limited to online documents anymore: now you can view and edit all your documents with Open IT Online.

When you try to view online a document stored on your computer, the document is uploaded to Open IT Online server and then it is opened with the selected online service. We know that Firefox users do really care about privacy issues and hence we want to make clear that the documents uploaded by Open IT Online are deleted within one day from their upload and they are never touched or read by any human being. So, be sure: your privacy is not going to be violated!

Open local documents with Open IT Online is extremely simple, you can:

drag the document to the Firefox window, or
select "File->Open File" menu and choose the document you want to open, or
click on the Open IT Online icon in the status bar and select the "Open a Document" menu item.

In this new version we have added support for Russian and Vietnamese languages too: thanks to Babelzilla.org for their precious help.

View and edit Office 2007 documents with Open IT Online!

We are happy to announce that Firefox users can now edit and view Office 2007 documents thanks to the latest version of Open IT Online (v1.7).

The capability to view and edit these relatively new document formats was one of the most requested features by our users. Open IT Online allows to view and edit *.docx (Microsoft Word 2007), *.xlsx (Microsoft Excel 2007) and *.pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint 2007) files with Zoho, ThinkFree and Vuzit. Unfortunately, Google Docs does not support Office 2007 document formats yet.

Open IT Online now available for Internet Explorer

We are excited to announce that we have just released a lite version of Open IT Online for Internet Explorer 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0.

Open IT Online users can now choose among Firefox, Flock and Internet Explorer to open documents and images they find on the net.

Open IT Online Lite for Internet Explorer works in a slighty different way compared to how Open IT Online works in Firefox and Flock. To open documents and images in Internet Explorer you just need to right click on an image or on a link to a document and choose "Open Image with Open IT Online" or "Open Document with Open IT Online" from the context menu.

A popup will be displayed where you will have to choose which online service to use.

Once you have clicked on OK, a new window will be opened where you will be able to view/edit your image or document.

Open IT Online 1.6: Welcome on board Vuzit!

Open IT Online 1.6 is now available for download. In this new version we have added another great service to view documents online: Vuzit (pronounced "views-it"). With Vuzit it is possible to view almost all the documents handled by Open IT Online (the only exception is the CVS document type).

Vuzit does not require any kind of registration and it is a fast alternative to view documents online: it also allows to zoom in and out the documents and to use keyboard shortcuts to navigate through the document.

"We chose to partner with Open IT Online because of its tight browser integration with Firefox, intuitive user interface, and ease of use", said Chris Cera, CTO of Vuzit.

We have taken the opportunity of this new version, to include in Open IT Online the support for Flock, the social web browser.

New release: Open IT Online 1.5

We are happy to announce that a new version of our extension is now available: Open IT Online 1.5.

In this new version we have added a new online image editor called Pixlr: this new service is Flash based but it is pretty fast too. The web application supports layers, filters and most basic editing tools; as usual, you can save the image to your desktop as a JPG or PNG.

In Open IT Online 1.5 we have also improved the setup dialog for the first installation: when a user installs Open IT Online for the first time, he will have the chance to choose between a basic setup (for most of the users) and an advanced setup (for experienced users). Start Picniking with Open IT Online

With Open IT Online 1.4 you have now the possibility to edit the images you find online with Picnik, one of the most powerful online image editors. It is as simple as right clicking on an image and choosing Picnik as shown in the screenshot below.

Open IT Online now supports Google Apps too!

After many users asking for this new feature, we have finally introduces in Open IT Online the support for Google Apps. Now Firefox users can open documents online with some of the most known online services, such as Google Docs, Google Apps, Zoho and ThinkFree.

In addition to Google Apps, the new version of Open IT Online introduces the support for the online editing of background images.

Open IT Online 1.2 introduces image support!

We are happy to announce that a new version of Open IT Online is now available: in this new version (v1.2) we have introduced the support for images. Now you can finally open online the images you find on the net. As you can see in the screenshot below, you just need to right click on the image and choose the Open IT Online item from the menu. Up to now, Open IT Online allows you to use two online image editors: Snipshot and Bilder Editieren. More editors will be added in the future versions.

With Open IT Online you can choose which online service to use depending on the image you want to edit (the image types supported are JPG, PNG and GIF). For instance, you may choose to use one online editor for GIF images and another one for JPG and PNG: just make your choice using the Open IT Online option dialog.

Thanks to the feedback received from Open IT Online users, we found out that Zoho has recently changed the Zoho Viewer service adding a mandatory field that indicates the expiration date of a converted document. Due to this change, every time the user was trying to see a document with Zoho Viewer through Open IT Online, he was getting the message error "Problem while converting file. Please try again.".

With this new version, Open IT Online 1.1.1, the problem has been solved and we encourage all our users to perform the update as soon as possible.
