Thanks for this tour d'horizon of policy, hype and national programmes. I am not surprised to read that Europe "will not benefit from manufacturing reshoring" as a lot of Europe has not embarked on UK/US style of manufacturing off-shoring (at least that's my impression).
And, by the way: have you seen Gartner's recent update on 3D printing -- makes an interesting read regarding the 5-10 years horizon: http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2388415

Dear mister Menichinelli,
I've been reading your article about the DIY craft business models with fascination, thanks a lot for sharing! I've always been very interested in the world of handmade products and design, and I'm currently researching it for my graduating paper.
I study Illustration in the Netherlands, Europe; AKV Sint Joost, School of Fine Art and Design. The reason I decided to research it was the fact that I love combinding my illustrations with objects. For example, I like illustrating furniture, by hand of course,
My teachers kept warning me that my work leant towards Craft. They were afraid I'd end up as a passionate hobbyist instead of a professional artist. The warning hit me pretty hard the first time, but now, being in the final year of my study, I realize there hardly are any boundaries between professional handmade products and "hobby" products.
Your article shows different ways of professionalizing this formally "hobby" concept, and that's very refreshing! Although I already was familiar with things like Etsy, Crowdfunding, etc, I never realized how big the handmade world was really getting at this point.
I was wondering if you'd like to share your thoughts with me about this matter. Are there, for example, other ways of professionalizing DIY Craft in your opinion?
Thanks again for sharing, I hope you'd like to share your thoughts with me!
~Jasmijn
