The lime-green dots of Sunset Triangle Plaza, aka Polka Dot Plaza, will serve as a backdrop on Friday for an afternoon and evening of acoustic, grassroots and lo-fi music.

More than 15 bands and performers, most of them from Silver Lake, will perform during the Sunset Triangle Plaza Acoustic Concert, which is part of Make Music Los Angeles, a dayof free musical events that will be held on the summer solstice. Neighbors are encouraged to come down to listen and even become part of the show, according to a concert press release:

Neighbors, participants & guests are invited to bring blankets and folding chairs to spread out in the plaza and enjoy the music in this grassroots & lo-fi outdoor neighborhood concert, as well as to bring their own musical instruments and voices to make music during the afternoon and in the community jam that will close the evening and concert together in unison.

Friday’s concert, which is supported by several Silver Lake organizations, is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Click here for details and a line up of performers.

Eastside Property: “A singular and exceptional lifestyle” now on sale in Silver Lake for $1.459 million

Depending on your point of view, the Jones Residence, a nearly 3,000-square-foot Silver Lake home, is either an example of cutting edge residential design or a giant, wedge-shaped coffee table standing on concrete-block legs. Built only three years ago, the home designed by the firm Escher GuneWardena was foreclosed on last year and is now up for sale at an asking price of $1.459 million, according to Redfin.

In addition to four bedrooms, three baths and views of the Silver Lake Reservoir, the home on Ewing Street also includes some high-end appliances and fixtures that the listing says “brings the best ease of modern joy to this aesthetic prism.” Not sure that means but the listing goes on to say “this whole package brings a sharp clarity to a singular and exceptional lifestyle.”

Is that “singular exceptional lifestyle” worth $1.459 million?

City Attorney seeks court injunction against six Echo Park area gangs

City Attorney Carmen Trutanich said today his office is seeking a court injunction designed to limit the activities of six rival gangs across much of Echo Park, Elysian Valley as well as a portion of Silver Lake .

The injunction, if approved, would prohibit about 300 gang members from associating with each other in public, possessing firearms and narcotics as well as intimidating or harassing residents within a nearly four-square-mile “safety zone, which would stretch roughly from Coronado Street and Silver Lake Boulevard on the west, the Los Angeles River on the north, Elysian Park and Dodger Stadium on the east and First Street and Beverly Boulevard on the south.

“This injunction will be an important too in curbing the escalating activity of these six rival gangs and bringing peace to our neighborhoods,” Trutanich said in a statement.

The gangs targeted in the injunction include Big Top Locos, Crazys, Diamond Street Locos, Echo Park Locos, Frogtown and Headhunters.

Similar injunctions against gang activities already apply to areas south, west and north of Echo Park, according to the city attorney. In December 2008, a judge approved an injunction against the Temple Street gang that has been active across the southern portions of Echo Park and Silver Lake.

An August 21 court hearing has been scheduled for the injunction.

Crime, including gang-related shootings, in Echo Park and surrounding neighborhoods has fallen over the years as it has across the city. But many trouble spots remain and gangs members remain entrenched in certain areas.

“I will say, there has been an uptick in gang activity, graffiti and violent crime by the criminal street gang known as the Crazys,” said Capt. Jeffrey Bert of the LAPD Northeast Division. ” They hang out on Benton Way. I have been saturating that area with cops lately resulting in a couple arrests for vandalism and a recovery of a handgun from a gangster off of Mohawk in the last two weeks.”

Another problem area is Elysian Valley, where gang members are suspected of several recent robberies and assaults on the L.A. River pathway. The most recent incident took place on Saturday, June 15 when an 18-year-old male was robbed near Shoredale Avenue, said Bert.

“He was walking listening to his headphones at about 1 am,when three or four possible Frog Town Gang Members jumped him, punched him, and took his stuff,” Bert said via email. “I will continue to put uniformed and non-uniformed resources down on the river walk, but I am really concerned that folks are just unaware of the criminal element down there, gangsters, drug sales, and thugs.”

Officials Expect This To Be Worst Fire Season Ever

This is shaping up to be the worst season for wildfires in the last 100 years, officials announced Monday.

“We’re going to have a very volatile fire season. We are in the third year of a drought,” L.A. County Fire Chief Darryl Osby said.

Fire season seems to be a year-round threat now, based on the huge fires that have been occurring in non-practical fire months. The Springs Fire in Camarillo in May may have been the start of this potentially record-setting fire year.

“I feel like we’re always at risk,” said Carbon Canyon resident Trish Hocking. “We had a bad fire, it devastated the neighborhood, made us all on high alert from then on…we’re ready to go if we need to.”

Firefighters from across Southern California are meeting in Diamond Bar where they’re working on mutual aid coordination and learning about additional resources they will have in August.

L.A. City and County will have two Super Scooper water-dropping aircraft and an Erickson Air-Crane, which is an orange water-dropping helicopter, at their disposal. Normal aircraft drop between 400 to 1,000 gallons of water; the Air-Cranes are capable of dropping 2,600.

Officials say homeowners need to do their part by cutting shrubs and certain kinds of trees.

This artificial wetland at the newly rehabilitated Echo Park Lake is an example of what could happen at Silver Lake Reservoir. The Conservancy has been exploring long-term options for the Reservoir once it goes off-line (that is, no longer supplies drinking water when the Headworks underground tanks are completed) — this is one of them. The idea would be to turn the Reservoir into a regional watershed management tool, perhaps a place where recycled water could be stored for later use, or where rainwater would be kept so that it could recharge the underground aquifers under the city, rather than drain into the ocean. Wetlands are one way for water to be naturally kept and cleaned — if they don’t occur naturally, they can be recreated, like this one.
