It scrunches up into a tight ball and if you get the long handled ones you can use the handles to hold the ball together :). They weigh next to nothing so they're easy to keep in my briefcase and that way I don't forget.

Re: Geothermal energy in Canada // Open Tables

well, firstly it's Iceland and not Canada, but that's easily done!

What I wanted to say was that it is very easy to make blithe remarks about Britain's lack of progress in renewable energies.

There is no doubt that Britain could and should do more, we have no excuses, and it is time to up our game. The bill running through parliament at the moment will impose the toughest carbon reduction targets IN THE WORLD (including Iceland and Cyprus!), so hopefully that will encourage investment and research.. and erm increase our “authority or dignity” (if that is something any nation should be trying to do?)

But what I think this posting misses is the point that looking at what Iceland has done, beyond being interesting and commendable, is pointless as a solution to problems in Britain, the US or China and India. We need solutions for major, heavily populated countries that don't happen to lie on one of the most geothermally active tectonic fault lines. Iceland has 300,000 people, a tiny population, easily catered for with geothermal energy. Furthermore if Britain were able to harness the same source of energy can you imagine the WWF saying that wildlife was thriving in a geothermal UK? Tens of millions of gallons of super heated water would have to be pumped out across wetlands and other coastal ecosystems! I've been to Iceland and it's a pretty barren place - sparsely populated - and covered in vast swathes of solidified lava fields, bereft of biodiversity (The ‘blue lagoon’ is in fact the effluent outflow from a geothermal powerstation), the perfect location for these actually very damaging generators.

The other countries mentioned in the video, New Zealand, the US, Italy, all mountainous and with ample geothermal opportunities. If you really want to point fingers perhaps it should be at these three and why they haven't invested sooner?

Finally we shouldn’t forget how this tiny population funded this cheap ecofriendly power for all…. International financing and BANKING! What Iceland preached at home it certainly didn’t practice abroad.

Re: GUERRILLA GARDENING // Open Tables

a good cause

Re: A good ariel of the site @ Norton Folgate looking east // Open Tables

Great photo!

Re: Money Is Debt // Open Tables

You are jumping from one extreme to the other. This film has been made by monetary reformers. What they are arguing is that something like a reformed capitalism can work with money that is not based on an interest-debt model... see for example New Economics Foundation, or JAK Bank as a working examples. They argue that the need for growth in capitalism (endless growth is seen as fundamentally unsustainable) is tied to the need to pay back interest: if we get rid of interest, then we get rid of the need for growth as the primary measure of economic sucess.

Whether they are correct is debatable to be sure. Marxists would certainly argue that there are much bigger problems with capitalism.

The question of big government spending is another question again... (many Keynesian capitalists argue for this of course)

Many contemporary ecological thinkers argue that centralisation is itself a problem, and that we need to shift to a multi-local global economic model....

Re: i second that // Open Tables

excellent!
One of your tutors did say that it should be possible for you to self-organise your tags... However, the question to ask with nuclear power, as with GM, is quite simply: 'Is the worst case scenario acceptable and manageable?'... In both cases it is clear that the risks are currently unmanageable, as this report shows. We need to fight the powerful propaganda that is pumped out by lobbyists in support of the private corporations that stand to control our food and energy supplies, and make vast government backed fortunes if given new contracts...

Re: Crafting 365, Day 305- Grey felted sweater purse // Open Tables

nice

Re: Petmate Indigo Extra-Large Dog House 25944 // Open Tables

eh? 25% does not deserve "recycled" tag.

Re: mosis' // Open Tables

very nice!

Re: Gertie Owl // Open Tables

great stuff!

Re: Gertie Owl // Open Tables

Absolutely love ugly dolls and what a great way to recycle old clothes.
