<h3>Optimize Author Lee Odden Interview from Wordtracker Academy</h3>
<p>Blogger Gareth Davies from <a title="The creative content marketing explosion: and why you should be part of it" href="http://www.wordtracker.com/academy/creative-content-marketing" target="_blank">Wordtracker published his interview</a> with Lee Odden last week, showcasing content creation tips, marketing advice and more from the <em>Optimize</em> author. Davies had attended Odden&#8217;s <em>Creative Content Marketing: Winning Hearts, Minds &amp; Wallets</em> session at SES London in February and had a chance to sit and chat with Odden at the event.</p>
<p>&#8220;Great content isn&#8217;t really great until it gets found, consumed and shared. Smart marketers need to think about how customers like to consume content. What do consumers want and what media do they like to use? If you can address this, it’s possible to fine-tune online activity to produce content that can motivate customers and get them to take action. For Lee it’s about looking at ways you can take a leadership position in the market and mix this with customer empathy,&#8221; Davies wrote. He wrapped up his interview with 10 Ways to Produce Killer Content, based on Odden&#8217;s teachings.</p>
<h3>Content Marketing Experience: &#8220;Lee Odden One of Ten People You Must Know When Defining a Content Strategy&#8221;</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.contentmarketingexperience.com/2013/top-ten-people-you-have-to-know-before-defining-a-content-strategy/" target="_blank"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-351" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;" alt="Lee Odden author of Optimize" src="http://optimizebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/lee-headshot-102008-236x300.jpg" width="236" height="300" />Content Marketing Experience&#8217;s</a> JP DeClerck compiled a list of the ten people you absolutely must know when defining a content strategy. Of Lee Odden, he wrote, &#8220;I have been preaching a holistic approach in marketing and in the use of content for years. I’m glad Lee Odden took it much further and wrote Optimize, urging people to have an integrated and buyer-centric approach of SEO, social and content.&#8221;</p>
<p>On the creation of the list, DeClerck said, &#8220;Note that a content strategy is not the same as a content marketing strategy and that I went a little bit back in history for this list. As we should know by now, content marketing is not new and content has been a crucial part of marketing forever. Simply put: without content there is no good website, email, social interaction, advertising, search engine marketing, customer service etc.&#8221; We couldn&#8217;t agree more!</p>
<h3>Marketing Professional Melanie Simons Reviews Optimize: &#8220;Towards an Optimized State of Mind&#8221;</h3>
<p>&#8220;The strength of the book is in the emphasis it places on the importance of content as the basis of search. Odden explains that in order to attract, engage and inspire customers to buy, marketers must understand how customers like to discover, consume and act on information – at all stages of the buying process. He advocates strongly for “knowing thy customers” and developing “customer personas,” explains marketing communications professional Melanie Simons, in her <em>Optimize</em> review.</p>
<p>The verdict? <a href="http://melaniesimons.com/2013/03/07/towards-an-optimized-state-of-mind/" target="_blank">Simons wrote</a>, &#8220;&#8230;the book is full of gold nuggets of information. I would recommend it and will return to it again to uncover more of those nuggets.&#8221;</p>

<p>For many professionals, speaking at conferences is a single means to an end &#8211; create awareness about your expertise and attract inquiries.</p>
<p>To me, that singular view can be productive, but misses a tremendous amount of value that can be gained from conference speaking, especially where the audience includes people in your target market or industry.</p>
<p>From prospecting new clients to recruiting new talent, conferences provide a variety of ways to advance business goals. One approach in particular, provides abundant optimization opportunities. Of course that one thing is content creation. With a little planning, a single 3 day conference could generate a month&#8217;s worth of content for a mid-sized business blog.</p>
<p>Here are a few ideas for you, which can serve as a great foundation for the kind of content that can be amplified through the advice you&#8217;ll find in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Optimize-Attract-Customers-Integrating-Marketing/dp/1118167775" target="_blank">Optimize</a>.</p>
<h3>Articles &amp; Blog Posts</h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 13px;">Take notes from the sessions and write up articles for your own site or pitch them to other blogs.  I recommend prewriting an outline so that you can either liveblog the session or at least get a head start on the article. Being first is important if you&#8217;re pitching a conference article to an industry publication.</span></p>
<h3>Video Interviews: Exhibitors</h3>
<p>Use your camera<span style="font-size: 13px;"> and do some informal video interviews on a tour of the exhibit hall and see if booth staff are willing to give a 30 second pitch. Post those interviews to YouTube, embed in your blog, post to Google+ and Facebook. Be sure to ask questions using your own target keywords so the answers help support the topic. Transcribe the audio to text when you embed the video interviews on blog posts or on your website. </span></p>
<h3>Curate Images</h3>
<p>Make a Pinterest board<span style="font-size: 13px;"> or a Set on Flickr and post conference photos. Create a group board just for the conference and invite others through the conference hashtag to join you in curating conference images. Everybody wins!</span></p>
<h3>Curate Quotes, Tips &amp; Statistics</h3>
<p>Listen for quotes<span style="font-size: 13px;">, tips, tools and statistics, then create lists posts (45 Tips on Conversion Optimization, 23 Things You Didn&#8217;t Know about customer segmentation, 15 Essential Statistics About Online Advertising).</span></p>
<h3>Curate Tweets &amp; Make them Visual</h3>
<p>Create your own  hashtag<span style="font-size: 13px;">, and livetweet sessions during the event. Then compile those tweets into daily roundup posts “45 things I learned at conference XYZ”.  Add those single tweets (quotes, tips, statistics) to interesting images (1 tip per image) and post them to Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and share via Twitter and the conference hashtag. </span></p>
<h3>Conference &amp; Blogger Outreach</h3>
<p>Pitch the conference blog<span style="font-size: 13px;"> with an article about one or more of the sessions you attended. Make sure it’s high quality, cited and proofed with an excellent photo of the speaker and audience. Ask the speaker for a copy of the PPT so you can use a few of the slides in your article. Promise to link to the speaker&#8217;s blog as incentive. </span></p>
<h3>Create a PowerPoint &amp; Repurpose</h3>
<p>Create a PowerPoint<span style="font-size: 13px;"> presentation from your notes about the sessions you attended for: internal company training, client training or for your own use when speaking at an event. You could also write a long article and break it up into smaller blog posts. If you&#8217;re a speaker, you could take your PowerPoint presentation and break it up into multiple blog posts or articles.</span></p>
<h3>Interview Speakers</h3>
<p>Interview other attendees<span style="font-size: 13px;">, speakers, sponsors or exhibitors at the conference. Attendees and exhibitors are often shy, but most speakers are more than happy to do an interview on video or via email (including me!) <a href="http://twitter.com/leeodden" target="_blank">@leeodden</a></span></p>
<h3>Create &amp; Curate Photos &amp; Videos</h3>
<p>Use photos and videos<span style="font-size: 13px;"> taken at the conference for your own social media promotion of your blog and company’s services or at least as stock images for blog post and b-roll for video. Create an image or video destination for the event, organized by topic. </span></p>
<h3>Get Help<span style="font-size: 13px;"><br />

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1348" alt="Social Media Predictions for 2013" src="http://optimizebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Social-Media-Predictions-for-2013-300x209.png" width="300" height="209" />Odden appeared alongside a cast of digital marketing thought leaders in Dell&#8217;s latest e-book, <a title="Social Media Predictions for 2013: Respected &amp; Proven Marketers Share Their Insight" href="http://en.community.dell.com/dell-groups/sbc/b/weblog/archive/2013/02/27/social-media-predictions-for-2013-respected-amp-proven-marketers-share-their-insight.aspx" target="_blank">Social Media Predictions for 2013</a>. He shared his predictions for the fastest growing social networks in the coming year, social media behaviors that will (or need to) change, and his advice for brands looking to better connect with customers across social channels. When asked which social metric is underrated, <a title="Social Media Predictions for 2013 - TopRank Blog" href="http://www.toprankblog.com/2013/02/social-media-predictions-2013/" target="_blank">Odden shared</a>, &#8220;Revenue&#8230; the trick is connecting the dots. As much as it makes sense to measure KPIs that don’t directly represent value to the business until better monetary methods can be figured out, companies should not lose sight of monitoring and measuring the performance of their social media activity. Never settle for fans, friends and follower counts or comments or impressions. Strive for measuring impact, directly or indirectly, on business goals no matter how difficult it is.&#8221;</p>
<h3>Optimize Featured at Content Marketing Experience</h3>
<p>Blogger J.P. De Clerck at Content Marketing Experience published a <a title="Content marketing in perspective: thanking Lee Odden and many others " href="http://www.contentmarketingexperience.com/2013/content-marketing-in-perspective-thanking-lee-odden-and-many-others/" target="_blank">letter of thanks to Lee Odden</a> and other presenters at SES London, Europe&#8217;s largest digital marketing conference. De Clerck explains two major challenges companies experience in content marketing, both of which were discussed in Optimize, as he noted. Success in content marketing must be measured by the alignment of outcomes with marketing and customer-facing goals. The second challenge, he writes, is that content marketing itself is oft misunderstood and even misrepresented; that despite its clear origins, it is used as an umbrella term for all manner of online marketing activities.
