Glaucoma is probably the most soul destroying disease veterinary ophthalmologists deal with on a day-to-day basis. It will cause blindness and discomfort and often ends in removal of the eye or occasionally in euthanasia of the patient.

Cherry Eye (Nictitans Gland Prolapse)

The Bulldog, Great Dane and the Mastiff are predisposed to this condition. It is also seen sporadically in other breeds such as the Weimaraner, Beagle and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. It is seen rarely in cats. It is usually a bilateral condition, with one side prolapsing a few weeks or months before the other when the animal is young.

Electroretinography (ERG)

Electroretinography is used in veterinary medicine to diagnose various retinal diseases such as generalised progressive retinal atrophy (GPRA) and distinguish sudden acquired retinal degeneration (SARD) from optic neuritis or central blindness. It is also an important tool in preparation for cataract surgery when we are unable to visualise the retina beforehand.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is an opacity within lens. The lens is situated behind the pupil and helps focus images onto the retina. Early cataracts may not cause any visual problems but as they progress vision will eventually be lost. Cataracts may occur as a result of genetic disease, old age, inflammation, trauma and other problems.

Who are we?
Optivet Referrals was opened in 2006 by Robert Lowe. Robert had been running a successful ophthalmology referral clinic as part of a first opinion practice. In order to improve the care and treatment of his patients and increase the range of services, he decided to move to new premises dedicated to referral work and away from the hustle and bustle of a general veterinary practice.
