While E4E isn’t the first kid on the block to create an Amazon website, they are the first to offer their websites using the Software-as-a-Service or SaaS model. The application developed in PHP using other open-source technologies such as Linux, MySql and Apache, has been designed as a solution to the barrier of entry into the e-commerce space. The way the service works is quite simple. Following the basic premise of the Amazon Associates program, an Associate makes money or a commission, every time they sell a product on Amazon’s behalf. This can be done in many ways, but the most common is to generate a link to Amazon from which a visitor will click and make a purchase. Amazon uses a tracking id to determine the source of the sold item, and then compensates the associate according to their pay scale. Amazon Associates can earn anywhere from 4-15% commissions depending on the item and total volume of sales. Because the products for the sites come from Amazon, most E4E website owners don’t have to focus on non-revenue generating tasks such as product inventory, or order fulfillment, instead, they can focus on new customer acquisitions via marketing, and establishing a strong retail brand. 2008 has been called the year of the amazon associate, but I’m sure that 2009 will be even a better year. Getting visitors into the door is one thing, although getting visitors to become shoppers is a whole other task. The trick this year is the same as last year and the next few years to follow, provide outstanding value and service at competitive prices. That’s it. By using Amazon Associates program to provide the latest and greatest products on the market, we can be sure to have the relevant products this season.

Some of the other things we are looking at implementing for the holiday rush is the use of Amazon’s S3 as a content delivery network. This will effectively provide higher levels of performance in regards to site load times. Nothing frustrates a user more then a slow load time. By improving load times, we are directly improving our customer experience, in addition, because it’s on Amazon’s S3, we only pay for what we use, keeping costs low.

This year has seen the rise of Amazon Associates. I’d like to think it has a lot to do with Amazon being a super cool company to work with, but I’m hearing in many cases, that people just like earning commissions and working from home. Which ever one it is, I’m sure that we’ll see a huge improvement in the number of people working with Amazon in 2009.

In addition to using a content delivery network for better site experience, we are experimenting with new layouts and enhancements for our site, as well as a few bug fixes that have been lingering. We’ve been considering if we should increase the use of Ajax, but to be honest, I’d only like to use Ajax where it makes sense, and not just use it because its a hot technology.

I’ll be putting in some last minute changes to the site in the next couple of days, right before everyone starts winding down for Turkey day. Hopefully, some of our regular shoppers will be greeted with a nice updated on their next visit.

Just an fyi, I wanted to mention that I’ve got a new cell phone website up at this time. We’ve recently added the ability for our customers to browse and purchase available Amazon Kindle e-books from our site. When you purchase your Kindle e-book from us, it’s added to your account, and readily made available for download on your Kindle. I like the idea of being able to keep up with all of the blogs I’m interested in, in one single device that I can actually carry with me on my day to day tasks. If there’s one thing I hate, its wasting time, so when I find myself in situations where I have to wait on people, like in the mechanic shop, barbershop or airports, I can now pull out my Kindle, and read something worth while. The Kindle has been in high demand recently, so much so that Amazon has run out of the devices on several occasions. Just the same way that the iPhone has revolutionized cell phones, and the iPod the mp3 and portable media market, I believe the Kindle is going to really disrupt the traditional book, magazine and newspaper industry. The Kindle doesn’t just make a great gift, but its just one of those kind of electronics that shows people you are not only a savvy consumer, but that you’re hip with what’s going on today and not behind the times (You don’t still have a vcr do you? lol).

I use several tools that help me manage my Google Adsense account. One of my tools is a firefox plugin called Adsense Notifier. Another tool I used heavily was AsRep, however with the invention of Google Analytics, most of the stats I used it for are being covered by Google.

I recently added the following tags to help the Adsense bot target the ads better and ignore the other content:
google_ad_section_start
afterwards close it off with the following code at the end of your content section:
google_ad_section_end
note: above codes should be used in js comment tags (couldn’t include in this demo without them being parsed)
I’ve noticed that the ads on the pages were better targeted. In itself, it should make a noticeable improvement in my click through rate.

Another significant change I made to hopefully improve my earnings is the use of different channels for each department or section of the site. I believe this will be of major importance because instead of all of the advertisements being displayed with one channel or site id, they will now have they’re own ctr. So if it was a sitewide ctr, the earning per click would be lower because the overall number of impressions would be so high in comparison to the clicks, separating the site into multiple channels reduces the impression count per channel, and therefore increasing the ctr. I only made the change two days ago, but I’ve noticed that each click is now worth significantly more.

A couple of months back I was experimenting with the replacement of my standard site search in exchange for the Google site search. This has turned out to be one of the best Google Adsense moves I’ve done on this site. The new Google site search generates just over $50 per month. See the thing is that most people coming to the retail site want to search for things already anyway, so monetizing the search has just created money where none existed. Can’t complain. I’ll report back in a couple of blog posts regarding the success of using the channels to increase ctr and earnings.

The outstanding growth to our retail site is largely due to the fact that our e-commerce platform developed by E-commerce For Everyone, a start-up that specializes in amazon associate storefront solutions, has been built with search engine, and social network traffic in mind. The focus of these features was to allow people to find their favorite brands easier, and to enhance the media selections as books, music and dvds are big sellers for us. This is sure to save shoppers time as well, for example, when I’m shopping for sneakers, I automatically want to see only Nike and Addidas. As a shopper this gives me the ability to turn a mall into a specialty boutique on the fly.

This enhancement not only helps shoppers find what they are looking for while on the site, but it also helps them find what they are looking for using their search engines. We’re very excited about this new feature and will continue to measure the results of its impact.
