This course aims to enable delegates to critically evaluate communication issues and strategies for increasing householder participation in collection schemes and plan, implement and measure the effectiveness of a communication campaign.

Target audience

Individuals who already have experience of communications but are now seeking to develop an understanding of communications planning to ensure increased efficiency of recycling schemes.

Please note this course is designed for local authority recycling officers who work with internal and external communications and design teams to produce waste and recycling communications. It is NOT aimed at staff who work as part of in-house/external corporate communications and design teams.

We anticipate that you will have three or more years experience in recycling prior to attending this course.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course delegates will be able to:

Understand the importance of integrating communications & communications planning with the planning & delivery of recycling services;
establish communication aims and objectives;
identify and categorise target audiences and evaluate their communication needs;
establish budget costs for different communications activities;
plan and implement an effective communication campaign recognising the different requirements for the promotion of new schemes and the maintenance of on-going schemes; and
critically evaluate the impact of communication campaigns for recycling schemes, using relevant approaches.

'Improving operations at AD facilities' is a one day training course covering a range of topics tohelp AD operators tackle process problems and manage stable, efficient AD facilities.

£25 +VAT. Lunch and refreshments provided

This new WRAP course will cover a range of topics for AD operators to equip them with the knowledge and skills to be able to successfully mitigate and tackle issues that may arise when operating AD facilities. It will also teach them how to design and optimise their process for efficient and stable operation, maximising gas yield, achieving long term process viability and high quality digestate output.

The worked examples will guide operators through critical metrics, which can be used to optimise digester performance. Each delegate will have the opportunity to undertake calculations for their own site and be able to benchmark their current operation against the industry norm. There will also be the opportunity to discuss with course speakers one to one.

This course will be of particular relevance to those AD operators producing or looking to produce quality digestate products (ideally to PAS 110), as it will cover AD processes accepting source-segregated (waste) feedstocks as well as non-waste feedstocks (such as purpose-grown crops).

Upon successful completion of the course delegates will be able to:

analyse and assess the role of monitoring and evaluation in continuous improvement;
set clear aims and SMART objectives and identify relevant performance indicators;
identify which aspects of performance need to be monitored;
identify the key data required to monitor the performance of recycling collection schemes;
identify the appropriate monitoring methods to obtain the data required and achieve the specified aims and objectives;
adopt good practice approaches to monitor participation and capture rates and to conduct a survey that will increase understanding of scheme performance;
interpret data and evaluate how this relates to performance; and
develop an integrated plan for monitoring the performance of a recycling scheme.

Individuals with responsibility for delivering waste prevention including strategy and action plan development, waste prevention and communications activities.

Before attending WRAP’s ‘Planning, Implementing and Communicating Waste Prevention’ course we suggest that it would be advantageous to have attended the “Communications Planning and Design” course as the general principles in this course will be used but not explained in detail.

Some waste management knowledge is preferable.

identify and evaluate the implications of the local, national and international drivers for the delivery of local waste prevention activities;
develop an overarching aim with supporting objectives for waste prevention within your local authority context;

evaluation in relation to different material streams/product categories and the behaviours influenced;
identify key material streams/product categories you wish to influence and the related behaviours to be encouraged;
review current waste prevention activities and communications and identify gaps which may hinder the achievement of your aim and objectives (using the 4E’s model);
select appropriate waste prevention activities and communications for the achievement of your overarching aim and objectives;
critically evaluate and appraise potential partners and select appropriate communication tools to enhance partnership working; and
produce/further develop a waste prevention action plan to include communications, monitoring and evaluation.
