Coventry Labour Party and Unite the Union have signed up to the Waste Not Want Not campaign to feed our city’s homeless people.

To help support the campaign we encourage everyone reading our website or Facebook page to donate tinned and dried food which we can give to the Waste Not Want Not campaign.

You can also encourage friends, family, work colleagues to join in and support this vital campaign by adding this article to your own social network sites like Twitter and Facebook to get the message out there.

Geoffrey Robinson MP has contacted all supermarkets directly in Coventry and USDAW at a national level (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) to encourage all supermarkets in Coventry to support the campaign.

The Drop off point for donations of tinned and dried food is, Coventry Labour Party, Transport House, Short Street, Coventry CV1 2LS, between Monday to Friday 9.00am to 4.00pm

COUNCILLOR URGES CALLS TO THE HOME HEAT HELPLINE

21,600 households in Coventry entitled to help with their fuel bills.

New figures reveal that in Coventry, 21,600 households are entitled to some form of assistance with their fuel bills. That help is worth an average of £250 per household and a free helpline is available for more information.

Lending his support to the campaign, Cllr. Ed Ruane (Lab, Henley) said: "Anyone who is concerned about staying warm should call the Home Heat Helpline and seek advice. I would also ask people to look out for neighbours, friends or relatives who may be in difficulty and make sure that they are aware of the Home Heat Helpline."

The number for the Home Heat Helpline is 0800 33 66 99 or you can visit www.homeheathelpline.org.uk. It is a free service that provides independent advice to people on low incomes on how to get help with their gas and electricity bills as well as other help such as grants for insulation or a new boiler.

'Decisive Action' Needed To Tackle Metal Theft Says Councillor

Decisive action is needed to tackle metal theft as the crime reaches epidemic proportions and increasingly puts both lives and livelihoods at risk.

Coventry City councillor, Ed Ruane said moves are now needed to bring the situation under control giving the Police and local councils more powers to act.

Cllr. Ruane accused the government of being far too slow to act, asserting that a much tougher licensing regime was now needed for scrap metal dealers.

Cllr.Ruane (Lab, Henley) said: “Metal theft is becoming an epidemic and urgent action is needed from the Home Office to stop this getting out of control.”

“It is still too easy to trade stolen metal. We need a much tougher licensing regime for dealers, including requiring people selling to scrap metal dealers to prove their identity, and stronger powers for the police to investigate.”

“When cases are becoming increasingly serious, the Home Office shouldn't turn a blind eye or just leave it to the police,” he added. “We need action.”

Local Labour party get their hands dirty as part of Labour’s Community Action Team Day

Labour Councillors and members spent this weekend (Saturday 9^th July) helping a local youth centre in Holbrooks, which opened in January 2008. They took part in a new scheme that is being piloted by Coventry Labour Party, called ‘Labour’s Community Action Team’ to get its councillors, members and volunteers involved in donating their time to help out with local charities, community groups and projects.

The voluntary group spent a day helping out at Holbrooks Community Centre, painting walls and clearing overgrowing trees and hedges.

Labour’s Community Action Team are eager to help and provide voluntary support for other community projects in Coventry.

Cllr. Rachel Lancaster (Lab, Holbrooks) said: “It was fantastic to see what a difference just giving a few hours of your time can make to a local youth centre. This is just the start of our Community Action Team who will be out on a regular basis doing our bit to contribute to improving our city.”

Jim Cunningham Slams Government Welfare Reforms

Jim Cunningham MP has slammed Government welfare changes as bad for

families and unfair on the vulnerable.

Hidden in the detail of the Welfare Reform Bill it contains measures that will

mean:

A leap in the dark for families: Could reduce childcare for thousands of working families - the Government has failed to decide what will replace childcare support and Tax Credits.
Savers are hit: the Universal Credit will be taken away from anyone with savings of £16,000 and above.
Cancer patients support cut: the Government are cutting off contributory Employment and Support Allowance after just 12 months which will hit people recovering from cancer.
Disabled people left as prisoners in their own care homes: The Government plans will remove a mobility allowance from those in residential care.

Jim said:

“I will vote against these plans. I do support moves that make work

pay. But the changes the Tory led Government are bringing in are

a leap in the dark for millions of people who get help with childcare,

saving for the future or are self-employed.

“The Government are also showing indifference to the needs of millions

of people with disabilities who need vital support. And making people

recovering from cancer fill out job applications is disgraceful.”

Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Liam Byrne said:

“We strongly back welfare reform that gets people back to work. It

should reward work, protect the vulnerable and get tough on those who

are consistently found shirking their responsibilities.

“But we will not support plans that will make life harder for working

families, savers, disabled people and those recovering from cancer.“

Cut Crime, NOT The Police - Geoffrey

Geoffrey Robinson MP is calling on the Tory-led government to stop cutting police numbers, as a reduction in police will inevitably lead to an increase in crime.

Geoffrey said: “Because of the Government’s 20 per cent cut to the police budget our Chief Constable has been put in an impossible position. Across the country frontline police officers are being lost, officers are being taken off the beat to do the jobs previously dealt with by support staff, and neighbourhood policing is being cut back.”

“Overall the Government has cut over 12,500 police officers and over 15,000 support staff across England and Wales. Although these figures are huge, many of these losses are only for the first year or two and could get even worse.”

“The police cannot be exempt from making savings, but going too far too fast puts the fight against crime at risk. That’s why the numbers of police officers and PCSOs should be protected and why cutting crime should be a priority, not an afterthought. I’ll continue to campaign against these cuts, and you can help by visiting www.StopPoliceCuts.co.uk, signing the petition and increasing the pressure on the Home Secretary Theresa May to stop and think again.”

A Big Thankyou

To all those who voted Labour in Thursdays Local Elections. It was a good night for us here in Coventry, with five gains across the city. There are new Labour Councillors in Bablake, Sherbourne, Westwood, Whoberley and Woodlands Wards.

We also had excellent results to build on in Cheylesmore and Earlsdon, where senior Tory councillors won by significantly reduced majorities.

Cllr John McNicholas: Tories Trying to Re-write History

In his speech in Council yesterday, Cllr John McNicholas (Upper Stoke) accused the Tory-led Government of trying to re-write history when it came to the state of the economy. Reminding people that if Labour hadn't borrowed to prop up the banks, people would have lost all their savings, and the money put into the economy prevented a slide into depression, he also took a side-swipe at the so-called Big Society, saying it was more like B & Q - do it yourself.
