We continue our monthly series of free sessions at the Apple Store in Covent Garden with a Summer series 'The London Film School - First Features'. LFS graduates talk about the transition from shorts to features and offer tips on low-budget filmmaking. On Tuesday 25 June join MA Filmmaking graduate Tony Ukpo and get a sneak peak of his latest feature After The World Ended. Events are from 6.30 - 7.30pm and are drop in, no need to book.

LFS graduates selected for Moscow Film Festival's Co-production Market

Two projects from LFS graduates have been selected for Moscow Business Square Co-Production Market as part of the 35th Moscow International Film Festival, June 24-26.

'Lenin?!', from producers and LFS graduates, Joanna Bence and Fyodor Druzin has been selected for the feature narrative section. The story follows three punk teenagers in a small town in Kyrgyzstan who steal a statue of Lenin to sell on the black market to hilarious and unpredictable results. The black comedy was also selected for the Asian Project Market in Busan, South Korea and the Connecting Cottbus East/West Co-Production Market in Germany in 2012. The film is produced by Curb Denizen Productions and Kovcheg Films.

'The Forest in Me', from director and LFS graduate Rebecca Marshall, has also been selected in the documentary section. The film will tell the story of Agafya Lykova, a Russian Old Believer who lives a solitary existence in the Siberian Taiga. The film will be told in Marshall's unique style and interpretation, integrating both new and archival footage with animation, to tell Agafya's incredible life story. Marshall has been awarded a Phd scholarship with LFS and the University of Exeter. The Forest in Me is produced by LFS MA Filmmaking graduates Gabriel Stavenhagen, Fyodor Druzin and Joanna Bence, through Stavenhagen's 'Follow That Car' production company and Curb Denizen Productions.

Adam Dewar selected for Edinburgh International Film Festival Talent Lab

MA Screenwriting graduate Adam Dewar has been selected for the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival Talent Lab (21 - 24 June).

Drawing on the Festival’s successful track record in talent development, the EIFF Talent Lab will lead 30 participants in group discussions, workshops and networking events, plus 1-2-1 advice and information sessions with experienced industry insiders, all with the aim of honing skills and building confidence within a new generation of filmmakers. Industry guests at Talent Lab include Bankside Films, Vertigo Films, The Salt Company, Film4, Young Films and Slate Films.

Alongside contributing to the award winning short film North Atlantic, Adam's first two screenplays were optioned by independent production companies and he has written and worked for The Digital Fiction Factory, Saltbeef TV, Rankin Film, The Guardian and The New York City Ballet amongst others. Adam is currently working in conjunction with Saltbeef TV on ‘Sticky Content’ a multiplatform television series set in London’s Tech City and with Rankin Film Productions on ‘Hardwire’, a short thriller due to be included as one of the eight shorts in the inaugural Collabor8te scheme.

BAFTA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – APPLICATIONS CLOSE MONDAY 17 JUNE

The BAFTA Scholarship Programme helps talented people in need of financial support to study a post-graduate course in film, television or games.

Each scholarship will provide up to £10,000 to cover one year’s course fees, an industry mentor, and free access to BAFTA events around the UK for a year.

Three successful scholarship recipients will receive the new Prince William Scholarships in Film, Television and Games, supported by BAFTA and Warner Bros., which also include a funded work placement within the Warner Bros. group of companies.

MA Screenwriting graduate Despina Ladi selected for AdaptLab 2013

2010 MA Screenwriting Graduate Despina Ladi, is one of 12 writers selected for AdaptLab, TorinoFilmLab's advance training course on adaptation, consisting of three residential workshops and two online sessions. In the final workshop during the TorinoFilmLab Meeting Event in November in Turin, the writers will present their work to international producers, sales agents and other industry professionals from all over the world.

AdaptLab 2013 selection

TorinoFilmLab is thrilled to unveil the selection of participants for the second edition of AdaptLab, our book-to-screen adaptation training. 12 European scriptwriters/directors were selected to participate in the programme: 4 of them will develop adaptation projects of their own choice, while 8 pre-selected literary works - 4 of which Italian, and 4 Scandinavian - will be assigned to the remaining participants. The adaptation process will run throughout 3 workshops, under the guidance of 3 internationally experienced tutors: Isabelle Fauvel, Razvan Radulescu and Eva Svenstedt Ward.

The 4 participants with adaptation projects are:

The Edinburgh International Film Festival (19 - 30 June) will showcase emerging filmmakers from The London Film School.

BLACKBIRD, first feature from MA Filmmaking graduate Jamie Chambers, will have its world premiere in the Michael Powell Award Competition Section. Other LFS graduates involved with the film are producer James Barrett, DoP/co-scriptwriter John Craine and co-scriptwriter Robyn Pete (MA Screenwriting). Also selected as part of the Shorts: Creative Skillset Film Academies "Discover the British Directors of Tomorrow" programme on 29th June is 5^th term film DINNER AND A MOVIE, directed by Ben Aston. Other LFS students with key roles are Maria Hummer (writer), Tolulope Itegboje (Producer), Michael Dorgan (Director of Photography), Elsa Bauverd (Editor), Daniel Zafer (Camera Operator), Janina Vilsmaier (Production Designer) . The film has also been selected by Palm Springs International Shortsfest, London Short Film Festival, Screentest 2013 (Nominated Best Film, Best Comedy, Best Production Design), Monstronale Fest, UNI Shorts - International Student Film Festival. The film was part of the LFS Media Funded Clear View program and was the first 5th term film shot on Alexa.

One of four films that examined the legal system from different perspectives (alongside A Villain’s Tale, A Brief’s Tale and A Prisoner’s Tale). GF Newman’s script caused major controversy with its portrayal of a metropolitan police force in which corruption was ingrained in the culture of the institution. Derek Martin as Detective Inspector Parr is chilling in the casual way he accepts backhanders and uses threats to advance his cause. In style and content a million miles away from The Sweeney, it’s more akin to The Wire of it’s day.

Taking a risk on first-time director Blair, and his specific, improvisatory way of working, was typical of Garnett’s courage, and it would pay off handsomely in Blair’s later work. This account of everyday life in a student flat is now as much a slice of 70s anthropology as it is a fascinating portrait of the growing pains of youth and the power dynamics at work in any group. As such, it makes for a revealing comparison with This Life.

Rachel Smith wins Rhode Island International Film Festival Screenplay Prize.

2011 MA Screenwriting graduate Rachel Smith has won a prize for her screenplay "Fix You Up" developed at the London Film School. It was the winner of the Rhode Island International Film Festival's "Spotlight on Rhode Island" competition.
Her screenplay tells the story of a workaholic transplant surgeon who cares more about the organs she operates on than the people they belong to. When an injury sidelines her from work, she meets a musician who prompts her to question aspects of her life.
