LFS student Nathalie Pitters wins Curzon Artificial Eye Photography Competition

To celebrate the release of The Salt of the Earth, Curzon Artificial Eye launched their photography competition #Salgadogram calling creatives to upload their Salgado-inspired images to Instagram using #SalgadoGram.

We're pleased to announce that LFS student Nathalie Pitters won the competition! This news is double the fun as The Salt of the Earth was also co-directed by LFS graduate Juliano Ribeiro Salgado alongside director Wim Wenders.

LFS students take part in the Barbican's Station to Station

A number of students have been working with Doug Aitken Workshop as part of the film crew that assisted in the creation of the Barbican's Station to Station 30-Day Living Film.

Two films by LFS grads selected for Locarno 2015

Two films by LFS grads - one a graduation film - have been selected to screen at this year's LOCARNO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2015 in the shorts programme.

KM 73, the graduation film of Radu Ghelbereu was also produced by Daniel Michalos and edited by Ricardo Saraiva, all LFS graduates.

The second film in Locarno by a LFS graduate is MARIA DO MAR directed by João Rosas and shot in Portugal.

Locarno is taking place this year from August 5 - 15.

Celebrating LFS Graduate Success

LFS graduates were celebrating at Palm Springs Short Fest last month (pictured) as a record six LFS films were in official selection - YOU ARE WHOLE (Dir Laura Spini. Prod Laurence Brook), AWAKENING (Dir Gaelle Mourre), SILVER WATERS (Dir Andrew Keresztes), BASILISK ( Dir. Nikolai Hamel, Prod Mathias Askeland, Screenwriter Lawrie Doran), LEIDI (Dir. Simon Mesa Soto) and ECDYSIS (Dir. Faidra Tsolina) - plus post-LFS films from Aygul Bakanova (VOID) and Colum Eastwood (THE MORRIGAN).

Closer to home, LFS is very well represented at the East End Film Festival with four new features by LFS grads - THE NEW BOY (Christine Lalla), PARAGRAPH (Jonathan Bentovim, Emily Harris), WHERE I BELONG (Fritz Urschitz), and XENIA (Panos H. Koutras). You can also catch two LFS graduation films - BETTER THAN TOMORROW (Eui Jeong Hong) and ONE THOUSAND & ONE TEARDROPS (Fateme Ahmadi)

We were delighted to welcome some eminent filmmakers to the school this term, including WHITE GOD director Kornél Mundruczó for a special two-day visit in partnership with The Hungarian Cultural Centre and LFS alumnus Iain Smith, who gave a Q&A for the latest film he executive produced, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (our sound system still hasn't recovered!). On a personal note, this will be my last LFS monthly newsletter, as I will be handing over the baton in September (role advertised below). I've had a wonderful 10 years at the film school, working with exceptionally talented students, graduates and colleagues and liaising with a very wide range of supportive industry partners. Huge thanks to you all. I look forward to reading future newsletters, full of exciting developments at the school, as LFS celebrates its 60th birthday next year.

LFS Summer Wrap

Each term we present a small selection of films made by our MA Filmmaking students, followed by a networking reception. We have a limited number of places available for industry talent-spotters and people interested in studying at the school. LFS is delighted to be a learning partner for Doug Aitken’s project Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening, which takes over the Barbican Centre with more than 100 free events. Our MA Filmmakers are getting right inside the action. More info here.

MA Filmmaking - Sep, Jan, May entry
Train in all departments, in a working studio, with students from over 40 countries.

On the two-year MA Filmmaking all our students leave with a portfolio of credits on at least 10 films - usually many more. We are currently still accepting applications from UK/EU applicants for September 2015 entry for MA Filmmaking . If you are outside these territories, you can apply for January or May entry.

LFS graduates pick up prizes at the East End Film Festival

Two shorts, one an LFS graduation film have garnered awards and praise at the recent East End Film Festival.

Don't Blame Us Cos We're Famous

DON'T BLAME US COS WE'RE FAMOUS won Best UK Short Film. Directed by Amelia Hashemi and written by LFS graduate Jules Bishop and produced by Olivier Kaempfer (Parkville Pictures) also an LFS associate. The film tells the story of the bittersweet relationship a boy has with his dad, and the magic time when you admire you father for the hero he isn't. Paul Brannigan (THE ANGELS' SHARE) and Juliet Oldfield (BRONSON, THE KNOT) star as the two adult leads.

LFS graduation film ONE THOUSAND AND ONE TEARDROPS directed by recent LFS graduate Fateme Ahmadi was nominated for Best UK Short Film. Although the prize was clinched by DON'T BLAME US COS WE'RE FAMOUS, the animation - centred around women and the culture of Iran - was presented with the Special Jury Mention.

Tony Ukpo's feature Mum, Dad, Meet Sam sees its Nigerian release this month

LFS graduate Tony Ukpo's feature MUM, DAD, MEET SAM sees its Nigerian release as the film is out July 10th 2015 in cinemas across the country with its premiere at the Genesis Deluxe Cinem at, the Palms, Lekki, Lagos.

The film follows Josiah Abiola (Joseph Benjamin) who is at the peak of his career. The only thing left is to find the perfect girl to settle down with. Samantha Smith (Daniella Down) is stunning, intelligent, and pretty much perfect.

They meet and fall in love. They might just be perfect for each other. He decides to take her home to meet his family…in Nigeria. What is supposed to be a special occasion turns out to be their worst nightmare.

Throw in a cocktail of the devious ex-girlfriend Morenike (Edith Nwekenta), an over protective, over dramatic mother (Helen Gold) and the fact that Sam is… ENGLISH and you have a recipe for an explosive and disastrous encounter ripe with awkwardness and hilarity.

LFS grad Ben Caird's debut feature stars Quinton Aaron from 'The Blind Side'

MA Filmmaking graduate Ben Caird's debut feature HALFWAY is picking up traction and stars Quinton Aaron best known for his role in 'The Blind Side'. Quinton is also one of the film's executive producers.

The film is centred around a recently released convict, who finds himself trapped between his urban criminal past and his new life on probation as the only black man in a conservative white Wisconsin farming town.

The film, currently in post-production, is written and directed by Ben Caird as well as featuring two other LFS graduates Benjamin Thomas as DOP and Karel van Bellingen as editor.

Gaelle Mourre's AWAKENING on the festival circuit

LFS graduate Gaëlle Mourre's graduation film AWAKENING has been travelling around the world and doing well on the festival circuit this year so far!

It recently won Best Drama at the NY Shorts Fest and this month, has screened at Hawaii Shorts Fest on the 18 June, followed by Palm Springs International Short Festival on the 21 June, Filmquest on the 27 June, the Cinefiesta Film Festival in Puerto Rico in July and at the International Youth Film Festival Langesund in August.

AWAKENING received its world premiere at Fantasporto and has also screened at the Athens International Film + Video Festival and Long Story Shorts.

A number of LFS grads came together on this film, with Gaëlle as writer, director, Anaïs Lorié as DOP, Aliénor Duplessis on Sound, Daniel Michalos as Editor, Vincent Weiler as Camera Operator and Malika Jmel-Talhaoui as Script Editor.

Mike Leigh among top guests at Midnight Sun Film Festival

LFS graduate, Chairman and director Mike Leigh is one of four distinguished guests of this year's Midnight Sun Film Festival where there will be a retrospective of his films and career to date. Also included in the list of esteemed international filmmakers in Sodankylä this summer are Christian Petzold (Germany), Nils Malmros (Denmark) and Whit Stillman (USA).

The Midnight Sun Film Festival was founded in 1986 by Finnish filmmakers, the Kaurismäki brothers, in the Municipality of Sodankylä. The village of Sodankylä is located in the heart of Finnish Lapland, some 120 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, where the sun doesn't set at all in the summertime.

LFS grad Alvaro Gago Diaz's graduation film Curricán has won Best Short Film at Cans Film Festival (Cans, Spain) & Primavera Film Festival (Vigo, Spain).

Curricán has also screened at Murcia International Film Festival, Malaga Film Festival, Victoria-Gasteiz & Curtocircuito International Short Film Festival, where it picked up Best Director.
