Why Aren't Environmentalists Vegan?

James McWilliams, a Freakonomics blogger, takes issue with environmental groups not actively promoting veganism. It's something I've often wondered about myself. McWilliams:

As the WPF report shows, veganism offers the single most effective path to reducing global climate change. The evidence is powerful. Eating a vegan diet, according to the study, is seven times more effective at reducing emissions than eating a local meat-based diet. A global vegan diet (of conventional crops) would reduce dietary emissions by 87 percent, compared to a token 8 percent for “sustainable meat and dairy.”

A Piece of Dietary History

Here's an interesting read about Michio Kushi, a historic figure in bridging the gap between diet and health in America:

“George was thinking that in order to have peace and prevent sickness,” Kushi says, “we should change diet for mankind. He didn’t call it yet macrobiotics, but he was teaching that diet is the basis for war.
Who: Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary is a 400-acre, nonprofit refuge for more than 200 neglected, unwanted, or abandoned farm animals. Its mission is to provide care, rehabilitation, and permanent sanctuary for unwanted farm animals; protect habitat for wildlife; and educate the public (especially children and school groups) about farm-animal and wildlife issues. All proceeds from the event will benefit the sanctuary.

Charlie Abel has a new edition of his ebook about building muscle on a raw vegan diet. Is weightlifting and bodybuilding possible on a raw vegan diet? 38 year veteran natural bodybuilder Charlie Abel says it's very possible, and at 54 years old has the physique many in their 20s would envy.

Purchase this book at the Vibrance bookstore.

Venus Williams Goes Vegan

According to an article on the website postgame.com, Venus was diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome (pronounced show-grins) this past summer, an incurable immune system disorder that caused her to pull out of the U.S. Open in August. Through the recommendation of her sister, Serena, Venus began looking into holistic treatments for the disease, which has no conventional remedies.

The seven-time Grand Slam winner decided to give up meat and dairy opting for a raw, vegan diet to help manage her symptoms.

Top 11 Predictions for Vegan Athletes in 2012

Since Jostradamus Connelly gave his top ten predictions for a vegan 2012, I thought I would give my eleven predictions for vegan athletes in 2012. Yes, this one goes to eleven.

11. After years of demand, OrganicAthlete finally produces the OrganicAthlete hemp NASCAR driver suit. These suits become wildly fashionable among Portland potluckers and begins a new trend of ordinary people wearing driving suits during mealtimes.

10. Tim VanOrden gives up on stair climbing. Instead, he spearheads the new sport of SGB or Sticky Glove Buildering. Competitors use the technology from the scene Mission Impossible 4 where Ethan Hunt scales Burj Khalifa with fancy gloves. Tim becomes the first person to climb the entirety Burj Khalifa with said technology.

9. At the start of the 2012 Cyclocross Worlds, Christine Vardaros looks at Marianne Vos and says, "Grrrr."

8. At a late-night karaoke party, Tonya Kay discovers her latent singing talent. She gives up her dancing and acting career and launches a post-folk/punk-revival band. "My pussy sharpens power tools with her claws" becomes a surprise smash hit on the straightedge charts.

7. Joe Connelly, editor of VegNews magazine, runs a sub 2:18 marathon, just making the Olympic Trials qualifying time. Then, all but two of the other competitors in the trial fall ill to food poisoning from tainted meat. Due to this sordid twist of fate, Joe realizes a life-long dream and makes the Olympic team.

6. Pam Boteler smashes any clichéd meaning out of the figure of speech "up the creek without the paddle" when she literally paddles upstream to victory in the first ever women's Olympic canoe event without a paddle.

5. Someone could make millions of dollars from this prediction. No Meat Athlete has a major t-shirt printing snafu that goes unnoticed, and hundreds of happy vegan runners wear shirts that say "www.nomeetathlete.com" on the back. After the first major marathon of the year, traffic to this URL overwhelms DNS servers in Oklahoma causing a critical blackout on the inter webs. Google and federal government form a partnership to build a server farm the size of Nevada.

4. Freelee says "fig you" to Durianrider and creates her own website: 45bananasevery36hours.com. Though 30 bananas per day and 45 bananas every 36 hours are, arithmetically speaking, the same, philosophers the world over begin to question whether the two rates are truly the same in the long run. A new academic journal, The Journal of Thinking about the Law of Large Numbers (Strong and Weak), surpasses the New Yorker in readership in Madrid, NM.

3. Robert Cheeke opens the first ever all-Vegan gym on Venice Beach.

2. Brendan Brazier discovers a new use for VEGA as a bath product. 1 part pea protein to 2 parts Maca not only exfoliates the skin, but causes an electrical current that stimulates muscle growth. Brendan starts spending large amounts of time in the bathtub, surrounded by candles, reading obscure late 1970s mid-Manhattan poetry. Brendan can't stop talking about his obsession with apostrophe and synecdoche, so much so that one day while riding with Dave Zabriskie, Dave's eyes glaze over and Dave makes a tweet.

1. This tweet will later be known as the "V-tweet," as these 103 characters cause the whole of professional peloton to give up meat. Social psychologists will write about these 103 characters for years to come.

Kickstart Vegan Athletes

A Day in the Life of a Vegan Athlete needs to raise $3400. They have raised $1034. Get into gear vegan athletes! This worth supporting.
Click here to back this project.

About this project

Day in the Life is a web-based documentary series where we spend the day with vegan athletes cooking, eating and training. Athletes have the most demanding nutritional needs on earth and if they can be healthy on a vegan diet than anyone can! We want to get their stories and positive example to the world.

Our Day in the Life videos cover each athlete’s demanding workouts, showing you how to get in shape, stay fit, and maybe even train for that marathon you’ve always wanted to do. Also quick and healthy recipes for the new or advanced vegan.

Our production team is award-winning film-maker Sasha Perry and Registered Dietitian Matt Ruscigno. Sasha and Matt have over 25 years of experience with veganism and both are committed athletes and activists.

We have already made four videos by paying the expenses- each high-quality video takes over 40 hours. We will stay punk and keep costs down- no hotels for us! Your donation goes directly to production costs. This project involves travel to get to the athletes- training or at a race, we want to showcase them at their best. Your donation also covers food, editing fees and equipment rentals (when needed). All essential to getting our videos and message of veganism out to the world.

We have over a dozen contacts with vegan athletes ready to go in front of the camera, from ultra-runners to MMA fighters to body builders! Donate to our project and let's show that vegan diets are healthy and accessible with professional videos hosted by a nutrition expert.

Poland's Vege (not just) Runners

It's always inspiring to see vegetarian athlete groups in other countries. Here's some info on a group in Poland. Check 'em out!

In the country when meat is synonym of strong and power and vegetarians are normally associated with fragile and weak human beings the group of people decided to come out and prove that meat is unnecessary to …run marathons. Even better, they showed one can win while on vegetarian diet. If you look closer, you see that these people are also activists and volunteers engaged in many good-will projects. These are people of all ages and backgrounds, ranging from students, through teachers to company owners. What they have in common is the passion for sports which turns into the passion for life. Running carrot no longer surprises on their white/green running suits, but even cause friendly smiles.

Group together with portal WegeSport.pl officially started in 2006 and it have been growing in numbers from this moment. However, members not only run, there are triathlonists, ultramarathoners, mountain/trail runners, mtb cyclists or many in one ;). They train and take part place in race, but also promote healthy lifestyle as mixture of vege diet and physical activity. Group is present in the media, cooperate with NGO’s or sport event organizators. Additionally they have lectures or articles about sport, diet or training and you may find Vege Runners information points on some big sport events. Vege Runners consists of vegetarians, vegans or raw vegans from all around the Poland. For it's ongoing activity Vege Runners is already known brand in polish running society or vegetarian world.

Year 2011 is the time of growth for the Vege Runners community. First of all, the second edition of Vege Grand Prix took place which is race run on the distance of 10 to 21 kilometers. Not only new names appeared but the sport level was really high so it was not easy to land a trophy. Winners received symbolic, yet very friendly awards. But it is not them that matter; it is the fact that more and more vegetarians become active. To beat a long distance one can’t live on chocolate bars and jam sandwiches alone, it’s a long and painstaking path to become stronger and faster.

Vege Runners is an exceptional club consisting of people who combined their passion with action against cruel treatment of animals, but without offensive shouts or aggressive criticism. One can say a lot, but what really counts is leaving one’s home and doing what one feels is right.

All you need to do to join Vege Runners is just to want it. There are no fees, sport level limit or lifetime obligations. To get to know the members better go to www.wegesport.pl.

Matt Ruscigno has posted the 2nd of the Day in the Life of a Vegan Athlete (he actually posted these over a month ago, but I'm just getting caught up); this time with former OrganicAthlete cycling team member Cara Gillis. It's so good to see Cara still hammering on. Enjoy!
